FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons offensive lineman Quinn Ojinnaka was suspended without pay for one game by the NFL for violation of the league’s personal conduct policy.

He will sit out the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 12.

“Ojinnaka’s suspension begins on Saturday, September 4,”  according to a statement released by the NFL on Thursday.  “He is eligible to return to the Falcons’ active roster on Monday, September 13 following the team’s September 12 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

Ojinnaka, a fifth-year reserve drafted out of Syracuse in the fifth round of 2006, was charged with simple battery by Gwinnett County police.

Police said Ojinnaka’s wife confronted him about contact with a female friend on Facebook. Police said he tossed her down some stairs and threw her out of their house in Suwanee in May of 2009.

Ojinnka told police that she started the fight by attempting to stab him with a pen.

Ojinnaka, who started five games at right guard last season, may participate in all preseason practices and games.

The Falcons would not comment on Ojinnaka’s suspension.

Not trying to be a jerk but “Facebook Fracas” seems to minimize a serious domestic violence incident in which a pro athlete pushed his wife down a flight of stairs after she allegedly went after him with a deadly ink pen. I don’t believe in raising a hand to your loved ones and have little respect for those who do, regardless of loss of temper.

How about don’t touch me I won’t touch you. At some point he had to defend himself and if he pushed her away to prevent her stabbing him how is that domestic violence. the man will be arrested anyway it goes. women need to be held accountable for there crap as well.

I would be led to believe that most responders to a sports story are male, and many responses here are able to read between the lines that this story is probably more than what is reported, a domestic violence scene. As a female, its refreshing that you ‘guys’ are sensitive and appalled at domestic violence, too.

As the others said, the reason should be listed as domestic violence, not “Facebook”. That’s like a couple arguing over taking out the trash, and the man hits the wife. You wouldn’t call that a “trash can fracas”, you’d call it what it is, domestic violence. Couples argue about stuff all the time, the key here is the domestic violence, NOT the reason for the domestic violence.

Perhaps she did attack him first, but it sounds like he seriously over-reacted. He’s a big, big man, while he shouldn’t have to stand there and take it, surely throwing her down the stairs was a bit too much.

Weak, self-defeating argument – if we’re going to try to establish an order to “what matters”, then the suspension for throwing a woman down stairs is the most important thing (battery) followed by verbal exchanges (assault or phone calls) followed by message exchanges or friending (texting, email, social network). Using the word Facebook damages the author’s credibility. Using it instead of the more serious aspect of WHOLE story, domestic violence, to grab attention is shameful.

Also, do you know all he did was friend the woman in question? I mean, even if she’s an ex, flying off the handle because he friended her on Facebook is a little extreme. Sounds like there was more to it than that, or she already suspected him of being a player, or she’s very insecure. Not that I defend his response, but it doesn’t sound like either one of them was being very rational. Of course, maybe that’s just because I’m someone who tries to steer clear of all that drama.

If he treated a female that way, he should be expelled from the team. Hope the judge doesn’t let him off with some sort of diversion sentence or something that hides his guilt, but, it seems sometimes judges aren’t emphatatic to females — one of my friends told me how a Dekalb County judge treated her when she had almost been beaten to a pump by her ex-boyfriend.

It seems Babineaux’s wife dropped charges but I thought all domestic violence cases in Ga had to go before a judge. As gray mule noted, it takes two to fight and as others pointed out, some females are out of control. Many couples never learn how to fight fair without violence and maybe they’re that way. I feel for them if they are–maybe a good pastor or counselor will help them learn to deal with their anger in a more constructive way….

Since the truth is ojinnaka has been suspended with out pay for altercation with his spouse should end all conversation about it. The truth is not what any reader or outside party to decide. Domestic violence is a serious thing. Just because the police and justice system says that Quinn is gulity does not mean it is the absolute. Law is excuted pertaining to fact and not emotions. Some emotions triggered the domestic violence. Leave it alone and let this young man move on. It is hard enough being in NFL and under the radar with such righteous spectators. Do not excuse domestic violence. Do not abuse the law using domestic violence to get back at anyone. Just because media reports it does not mean it is true. Lets not be so narrow minded and allow sources to determine your ability to rationalize what may be our own truths. Since you were not there, no opinion is warrant.
