BUCKHEAD — Falcons coach Mike Smith took a break from waiting tables in the middle of the second annual Huddle Up for Miracles at the Capital Grille to give us an update Monday evening.

“We’ve got a full house and the guys are up there serving food, having a good time,” Smith said.

Linebackers Curtis Lofton and Mike Peterson were selling flowers to the lady guests trying to raise funds.

“Guys are competing for tips and they are being as creative as they can to earn money,” Smith said. “We are competing to see who will be the top waiter. The money we raise will all go to a great cause.”

Last year’s event raised $194,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network, which locally benefits Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Funds raised go specifically to enhancing the Children’s Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (CIRU) at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

“Last year we kicked it off with a very successful night and we hope to do the same thing this year,” Smith said.

Radio announcer Wes Durham was the host. I don’t have report on how the Karaoke contest went. There also was a live auction.

During the event, Smith recognized Marcus Nickell, who was struck by an SUV after he lost control of his skateboard in September of 2008. He recovered at Children’s in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and began therapy in the CIRU. Nickell has since progressed to the Day Rehabilitation Program at Children’s to continue therapy.

Are you kidding me? At my 25th b-day I was doin…..[explicit content]……. This group of players are truely role models in every sense of the word. I only wish I could have been as muture as them at that age or as giving. No one in the NFL deserves success as much as them, either on the field or off. I see a great team for years to come and a tremendous positive influence for every Atl native, football fan or not. It’s about time a city get recognition for something good instead of the Vick thing, Ray Lewis’ thing etc. We owe it all to them, Lord & everyone else knows Joe Johnson doesn’t care about the people….at least OUR Falcons do, and the feelings mutual…..

Just to think some people said, “How can rookie QB ? -just out of college be worth 72 mill for 6 yrs”. Matt Ryan is the most dedicated, focused, yet humble leadership example we could have gotten to take the Falcons to success, and bring accolades to the city of Atlanta for the teams accomplishments. Arthur Blank and his entire management team do a great job of stressing giving back to the community, and the Falcons players and coaches are enriched by their contributions.
