At the polls: Fans want Henderson

I thought we’d share the results of our recent poll question: Should the Falcons sign Big John Henderson?

General manager Thomas Dimitroff has said the team will not pursue the defensive tackle, but the fans seem to want him. Some what him, but at the right cost.

Here are the results.

Should the Falcons sign Big John Henderson?

• Yes, the D-Line needs help. (58%, 1,188 Votes)

• Yes, but only for the veteran minimum. (28%, 580 Votes)

• No, the D-Line is set. (14%, 283 Votes)

Total Voters: 2,051

Henderson is still out there.

Should Dimitroff reconsider?

At the right price we could use another vet on the D line

DE should be the priority. If we have any injury to anyone in the rotation, the Falcons pass rush will be in big trouble. We have enough bodies at DT right now, especially with Jamaal set to move inside.

No, a proven veteran DE is the real need. Our DT rotation should be solid and deep this year.

Peria Jerry sure seems to be taking a while in rehab. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have some veteran insurance Coach Smith is already familiar with.

I heard he could be expensive though.

If it improves the team, I’m for it. If we went with what we have now, it would be the same a s last year after Jerry went down. I wouldn’t mind seeing Henderson, Babs, Walker, and Jerry in the rotation. We could really get a push up the middle and help out our D-ends.

Feeling optimistic about the way our team is shaping up. We now appear to be deep at every position except DE, at least on paper.

We have spent a 1 and a 3 on defensive tackles that last two drafts and also drafted two more (think), and are moving a 1 (Anderson) inside to tackle. Enough already.

Yes. Falcons need serious d-line help. signing him would bring some pressure to quarterback. DE is also a pressing need…And also a compliment to WR roddy white would set the offense quite nicely.

Hey Y’all:

Get this huy or Haynesworht. We cannot be caught in the situation we were in last year when Perry got hurt. We still do not know his capabilities in the NFL because he has not played a whole season. In fact, Trey Lewis has not played a whole, cinsistant season at tackle. I say get one of these veterans and let’s go with it. Let’s do it in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!”

GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!

I would say “sign him” (but maybe that’s why I’m not a GM). If Smitty coached Henderson at Jacksonville, he must be familiar with his abilities, or the lack of. He (they) wasted no time in grabbing Brian Williams or Mike Peterson when they became available. If Smitty hasn’t pulled the chain yet, I would let sleeping dogs lie.

D. Led, How many sacks did Chauncey Davis have last year? I like Davis, but we need to generate some pressure opposite Abraham. If Abraham goes down with an injury, who steps in? I like Biermann, Sidbury, and Davis, but there are questions about all three. Do you really feel confident with only those four in a rotation? While I like all three, I say bring in a veteran (at least for training camp).

I still think vet DE Andre Carter could be picked up. For all the stink Albert Haynesworth is raising and attention he’s getting about NOT wanting to be a 3-4 NT, back in early March, WSH Post ’skins beat reporter wrote articles implying Carter has similar sentiments (though not as demonstrative as skipping workouts/team activities) about NOT wanting to be a hybrid DE/LB as that was his reason for wanting out of SF to come to WSH as a free agent.
If memory serves, his base was 1.5 mil w/ 3.0 mil roster bonus for 2010, and was the ’skins most productive DE last year, at age 31.
Would Carter be good investment for a couple of years to give Abe another vet + help school Biermann and Sidbury?

If Jerry is still Questionable, and Babs’ Suspension is 4-6 games, I think it’s a no-brainer. Henderson know the system and still has a lot to give.

Barring an injury or setback with Jerry’s rehab, I don’t want to cut anybody to sign an over-the-hill guy. It’s way to early yo consider a move like this.

Current DT’s on the Falcon roster:
Babineaux, Jonathan
Jerry, Peria
Walker, Vance
Lewis, Trey
Johnson, Thomas
Peters, Corey
Bryant, Trey
Jamaal Anderson (if he does not get cut)

In my opinion, looks like we have the depth.

DE’s on roster:
Abraham, John
Davis, Chauncey
Biermann, Kroy
Sidbury, Lawrence
Anderson, Jamaal
Stephens, Emmanuel
Henley, Rajon

Could use 1 more pass rushing DE.

At first glance it looks like an obvious choice; however, when you analyze it further, he is arguably on the downside of his prime and could actually detract from the budding youth and the experience they so desperately need. I say that TD knows his job well and if he is opposed to the idea then there must be a reason. I do think we will be fine with a better secondary and more speed at linebacker.

I don’t think Dimitroff and Smith are overly concerned about our run defense, and Henderson is not a sure-fire asset on passing downs. Of course, if he wants to take a big pay cut to join his former coach and the Falcons, I say “Welcome!” But if he’s looking for more than $1-1.5 million, no way.

hey Atlanta, dont try too hard to improve your teams(falcons, hawks) because if you do you’ll create the dreaded sports dynasty…..Just leave the superstars for the other cities like New York, Miami, Boston, LA, Pittsburgh…. .those cities have a real problem with their fans having too much fun, you know…..playoff games and championships, media attention, and those damn parades….DONT LET THIS HAPPEN HERE !! traffics bad enough..

I don’t understand why fans would want him. Are they just fixated on the name? He’s on the downside of his career and his stats the last two seasons are very comparable to tackles we already have. Why would TD invest the huge contract that he wants to get a tackle that isn’t any better at this stage of his career than what we already have?

Hamp

We don’t need him the only move I would be in favor of is a youg pass rusher. I thought Edwards from the vikings would have been perfect. I also think Bierman is gonna take a major jump this year. In the tuscaloosa paper they had an article on the OL Johnson and he said that Bierman was really good. Bierman will be a beast.

Chauncey Davis is steady, and a solid backup. But let’s not forget he was almost handed the LDE job going into camp last year & couldn’t beat out Jamaal Anderson and hold on to the spot. He’s definitely limited, but still a decent 5th DE on this roster.

It takes DEs a couple of years to develop. Bierman and Sid are coming into their own (Bierman especially). Everyone needs to quit yearning for the next FA to emerge and give our guys a chance. Henderson is serviceable, but not worth the money.

Seems like our D-Line depends to much on Perry being healthy. He battled injuries all through college, might not be any different in the pro’s. Id sign him for the right price.

KG

May 12th, 2010

Signings like Henderson or another DE won’t happen until after the pre-season has started. By that time, we’ll know who will be healthy for game 1, and who is ready to step it up. If Chauncey Davis doesn’t step it up this year, we could get a veteran and cut him. Anderson isn’t going anywhere, at least not until his contract expires. The coaching staff still likes his versatility and his effort. Besides, with TD’s drafting philosophy, he doesn’t care that Anderson was drafted in the first round or that he was the number 8 pick. None of that matters to him, or to Smith. They just want the best players that fit their system.

Screg

Here’s the thing about all the people saying “don’t sign him because we have depth at DT, but need a DE.”… Depth doesnt mean anything in the NFL. Its all about quality, not quantity, when it comes to players. So if Jerry goes down again (and he will, because he gets hurt every year) you’re saying youre satisfied with having Anderson(bust), Peters (We know nothing about), Walker(didnt do much), Johnson(decent against the run) and Lewis(who will get hurt and is overrated by atl fans for no reason at all) starting games? other than Babineaux, we have no sure quality DT. Sign Henderson and we wont need to find a DE. He will demand double teams, making Kroy(should be the full time starter) that much better.

Screg

Thats like saying oh we dont need a QB we have 4 of them on the roster…but their names are Tim Couch, Tim Rattay, Craig Nall, and Ryan Leaf….it doesnt mean anything unless they can make a positive impact for the team.

I want henderson too, because I know what he did at Jax, but you start to scratch your head, hes been out now for awhile and other teams could have signed him, like Kansas city and all. Why hasn’t anybody yet? Is there something their not saying? If we could get him for the right price, but at the same, I wouldn’t want to get damaged goods. :(

DOL whats it lookin like? It would be great to get him on the roster, but I do remember when the falcons signed Mike Smith as head coach, John Henderson gave an interview bashing Smith, saying something like “Smith is an idiot, and most of the things we do on defense is because of Jack Del Rio, and not Smith.”…but then when Smith came here, the Jacksonville D started to fall apart sooooooooo…….. maybe that little interview has something to do with it.

Most things with Babs case are matters of public record. Nothing on public record I can find about his next appearance. As a time issue most people will initially plead not guilty and use the that time before their next court date to work out a plea agreement. Then after the suspention there will be an appeal which we see can take a while as with the Cushing, Pat & Kevin Williams cases. Babs will be a starter all season long & serve his suspention of 4 games, standard for leage substance abuse policy, at the beginning of the 2011 season. Babs with a rotation of others will get us through the year, at least that’s my opinion.

We’ve got to think about Abe’s replacement for the future, he won’t be around forever. He’s still got alot left but it takes 2-3 years to develop a DE, we should get one out of the draft for his eventual sucsessor. As much as I like Biermann, don’t think he’ll ever be dominant enough to fill 55’s shoes. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong this year.

torgo

He’s not damaged goods. His agent is simply asking far too high a price.

But keeping in mind that he knows Smitty’s defensive scheme and is a perfect fit for the system, he’d be a great acquisition when that price tag comes down. Even in his declining years, he’d be a major upgrade over Thomas Johnson or Trey Lewis at the NT spot.

No I think that it would be added dead weight and look at all the other franchises that turned him down. Apparently I have to go with Dimitroff as NO!!!…He wants to much of what he is worth. He has failed off. In addition to that he has not done anything to show he should be on the team. No other team is interested as I said AGAIN. Its something not right with that

I say trade for Shawne Merriman instead for #2nd round draft pick next year instead of Henderson. First this one keep him away from the Saints and also he is young and with LB Curtis Lofton in the Middle, Merriman on one end and Spoon on the other I would love those LB!!!

KG

May 13th, 2010

Merriman didn’t show anything last year after coming back from knee surgery. He’ll probably be better, but I don’t think he’ll be the beast that he was his first 4 years in the league. Besides, he’s going to want a bunch of money.
