Weatherspoon plans to stay in the books while in Texas

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons first round pick Sean Weatherspoon gave the AJC his assessment of his minicamp performance.

“I think it went OK,” Weatherspoon said. “I’m definitely not pleased with where I’m at and I shouldn’t be. It was just been five practices and I just had a few chances to come out here and get it done.”

Some things started to click for him, even though he was asked to play two different positions — weakside and strongside linebacker.

“I definitely feel comfortable with the progression that’s going on,” Weatherspoon said. “I feel that every time that  I went back out there I was feeling a little bit more comfortable with what I was doing.”

The Falcons were installing things between each practice to see how much the players would retain.

“I definitely feel a little bit more accustom to what we are doing,” Weatherspoon said. “The main thing is that when I go home, I have to keep studying my book and make sure I’m looking over my notes. I want to make sure when I come back out here that I’m able to soak up more stuff as well as used the stuff that I’ve already learn.”

After the draft Weatherspoon was categorized as a weakside linebacker by general manager Thomas Dimitroff.

“I like playing on both sides,” Weatherspoon said. “I can show a little bit more versatility. I think they want to see me on both sides and maybe make an assessment. Maybe, one day I’ll find a home, but I’m just moving back and forth right now.”

Weatherspoon impressed middle linebacker Curtis Lofton.

“He has a lot of energy to him and that’s what you like to see,” Lofton said. “That’s great for a rookie. He’s going to be a good player.”

SECOND! …. unless DOL pulls a Marion Jones for me and disqualifies a bot posting (or whatever that is) from being “first” :) ;)

Question: We had a solid not spectacular draft. Should we infer that if we get solid, not spectacular play this year, we could in tracking along in “the process” and a playoff berth?

In that picture, doesn’t Spoon look like a cat ready to pounce?

Love the attitude–exactly right for a rookie(or any competitive person).Never satisfied with their performance, always looking for areas to improve. Recognizing the progress made, not dwelling on errors, willing to put in the effort off the field to get the desired results on the field. I think we’ve got ourselves a budding professional in both talent and demeanor….

I have not heard very much about the DT that we picked up in the 3rd round, Corey Peters. How was his mini-camp. Silence is not a good thing. I have more about Trey Lewis than Peters. What’s up DOL? Why all the secrets about this guy? Is he slow to impress or pick up his assignments in the new system? With Babs and Jerry out, he should have seen a nice amount of snaps to know something.

truth — you’re welcome Truth!!!

waynester — very nice observations.

Infamous — Had to tell how he did and I didn’t talk to Def Line coach Ray Hamilton about him. We’ll definitely get around to him at the rookie minicamp.

Good question Infamous! The D-line is what we really need to know about. We addressed the secondary and the linebackers. Is JA98 lining up more as a DT now? Are the Falcons open to veteran talent on the line if some good ones become available? Does Trey Lewis look any better than he did last year?

I believe spoon will be a very good LB. I like that he is taking his playbook and will continue to study. He has to stay humble. I believe that Peterson will keep him grounded

I’ll go out on a limb and say that we’re going to see a lot of improvement from Trey Lewis. Keep in mind that he injured the same knee twice in less than a year. If it was an ACL injury (and I think it was), we all know that players can take 12-15 months to fully recover from that. I think he will start to show what we were seeing out of him as a rookie before the injury.

What the H$%# is Witherspoon doing in Texas, he was the #1 pick but this does not set an example for someone that we are counting on or the other drafted players to put forth whatever it takes to be a winner.

You have to remember… These rookies are not under contract right now.

You sure stirred up a lot of speculation with that “heavy DL news” blurb earlier–generated a buzz on the team website for sure…

Exactly right. Plus, the kid won’t be getting home much over the next few months and probably has his hands full getting ready to relocate to the ATL. Ease up on the guy, willya?

Looking forward to the D-Line info, DOL! ‘Spoon AND Dunte are not only good players, but they provide a certain swagg that this team has been needing for the longest. This season can’t start soon enough.

Looking forward to the D-line info. Not surprised about Weatherspoon at all. He’ll bring glory back to the OLB position, and help us forget about a certain Dallas Cowboys ‘tard that doesn’t play here anymore…

I agree, I think peterson will keep the “spoonman” grounded and teach him to lead by example. I saw some footage of spoon getting fired up on the field in college and it gave me goosebumps…..let`s go falcons!!!!

Nice posts waynester.
I still haven’t come down from cloud 9 yet, I could probably count the number of times the Falcons drafted the guy I really wanted on one hand (I’m still scarred from that T.J. Duckett pick.) Spoon is a perfect fit both in talent and personality, it’s going to be fun to watch him and Lofton for a long time to come.
