Falcons Q&A: Has Harvey Dahl mellowed?

Flowery Branch – In a stunning upset, there were three mild skirmishes during the Falcons recently completed minicamp and right guard Harvey Dahl wasn’t in the middle of any of them.

Also, Dahl, who was voted as the league’s 8th dirtiest player in a Sports Illustrated poll of 300 players, has clipped off

his hair.

He now looks like Deacon Dahl from church and not an ex-biker looking for a bar to clear out.

We had to find out if Dahl was mellowing or just trying to fool the opposition.

Here’s a Q&A he did with AJC during the minicamp:

Q: When did you get that haircut?

A: Just a little bit ago. Just a couple of weeks ago.

Q: What’s been your focus in the offseason after getting your ankle taken care of?

A: Yeah, I had to get a little surgery. Nothing serious. I got some small things taken care of and then it was just a matter of rehab and getting stronger to make sure that I’m healthy to go through the season.

Q: How tough was it down the final stretch of last season when you were not able to  play?

A: It was real tough because I’m really competitive. It’s just hard not being able

to go out there with the team. It was really tough for me. I’m just working extra hard to make sure that I’m healthy so that it won’t happen again. I just want to compete all season long.

Q: What was your focus in the minicamp?

A: Just trying to get better. We had to get our new guys in here and help them learn the offense. We’re just coming together more as a team. We’ve been together, a lot of us, for awhile now. We know all of the plays. We just have to tweak some things. It’s kind of like fine tuning everything and getting ready to go.

Q: How comforting was it getting your contract situation taken care of this offseason?

A: We got that out of the way. Now, I can just focus on the season, play hard, compete and try to win as many games as we can.

Q: The running game carried you all to the playoffs in 2008. What will be the key to getting it back on track in 2010?

A: Just the little things like what we are doing out there (in minicamp). We know all of the plays. We know all of the defenses we face. It’s just a matter of getting it down and executing.

Good stuff Mr. Ledbetter. Dahl was our best guard last year so I hope he can stay healthy and be a force in that running game. I’m not sure I like the short haircut though. I like our linemen to look like, as you said it, “an ex-biker looking for a bar to clear out.”

Love the attitude from Dahl, by far my favorite lineman. I wish Baker had the same mean streak!

That’s what I thought, too–a one year tender, same as Clabo. I wouldn’t mind if we worked out a longer-term deal, though. Dahl has some areas he needs to improve on for sure, but the attitude and work ethic are great examples for our young OLinemen to follow. Amen to Gatorzone on Baker, and FEAR…is a great handle…

Dahl is my favorite Falcon because he *earned* his starting position. As far as the haircut and being more mellow. No way. I’ve known football players who were true gentlemen off the field, but during game time– very mean and nasty. Go Falcons!

I like what we have done with the O-Line. Dahl is the real deal…a veteran, aggressive lineman. Baker is learning how to stay healthy, and the rookie from ‘Bama will prove to be TD’s best pick as GM for the Falcons. He will rank with the Van Note and Fralic.

Interesting to see what becomes of #63 in all of this. He seems to suffer sometimes in run blocking. Pass protection is suspect. Whatever the case, I like the fact that we are bringing in big bodies on both sides of the ball. This has ALWAYS been the franchise achilles heel: not enough BIG interior lineman. TD is fixing that…

DOL meant the fact that a signed tender is a contract and Dahl is not unsigned.

Probably why we drafted Johnson. Dahl or Clabo wont be back in 2011. My guess is Clabo wont be re-signed.

The headline asks if he has mellowed, but that question wasn’t asked during the Q&A. So, has mellowed?

The Cowgirls were already interested in Clabo prior to the draft and another good season probably means a trade. That’s the way the Pats seem to operate–getting good players as UDFA’s, building them up, then trading them for multiple picks and to get comps in the following year’s draft. It’s worked out pretty well for them so far….

Jesse — That’s a training camp question. Not a first day of mini-camp question. Not when he’s working with the first team. If he’d been running behind the rookies and on the second team, you would have a good question. Next time, I’ll just ask for questions and you can send along your questions. Deal?

Resign — Of course not! He just didn’t get into any fights and he got a choir boy haircut.

Gosh, Harvey even plays when he’s hurt… now that’s a man! Not me or Chipper or Moore, we are fragile/special….we do want our paychecks, just don’t ask us to play with a hangnail….

Welcoming defensive linemen to his own version of H*** / Dahlhouse is exactly what I’m waiting to see on September 12th. Luckily we get Steelers sans Roethlisberger. From a contract standpoint, it is interesting to see that they only re-signed him for a year. He’s my fav O-lineman. Feel free to find Harvey Dahl for Pro Bowl on Facebook. I’ll see you there.

The ProBowl is kind of a beauty contest to begin with and I don’t think Dahl quite measures up yet. Hopefully, after this season he’ll be a unanimous choice along with several of our other guys who had down years in 2009….

Who cares bout probowls? It is just a beauty contest. How did Abe not make it with 16.5 sacks [with most on 3rd down i believe] and Keonen setting an NFL record with only 49 punt return yds for the season in 08? It was a gross injustice they didn’t get bids.
