Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle John Henderson, right, rushes Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel for the sack during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game, Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, in Jacksonville, Fla. Jacksonville won 24-21. (Associated Press).
Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said that the Falcons will not attempt to sign defensive tackle John Henderson, who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday.
Dimitroff was a guest of Adam Schein and Rich Gannon on Sirius radio and was asked about Henderson, who played in Jacksonville under Falcons head coach Mike Smith and defensive line coach Ray Hamilton.
“At this point we will not,” Dimitroff said when asked by Schein if the Falcons were interest in Henderson. “I think that’s probably the logical assumption but we feel like we have a young and evolving defensive line and where we are right now I would say that we will not go in that direction.”
At this time, there is no trip planned for Big John Henderson to visit with the Falcons, according to his agent Tim McGee. –DOL
BIRDLAND – The Falcons have drafted defensive tackles rather high in their last two drafts and signed one to a contract extension.
Henderson is set to visit Kansas City on Tuesday. They could offer him a more proponent role and are willing to pay more than the veteran minimum.
The Falcons drafted Peria Jerry in the first round last season and Corey Peters in the third round last Friday. Signing Henderson would provide insurance in case the young players flop.
Also, the team signed Jonathan Babineaux, who’s coming off his best season, to a contract extension during the 2008 season.
Henderson has started 120 of 128 games in eight seasons with the Jaguars. He was a first round pick out of Tennessee in 2002.
Henderson, 31, made the Pro Bowl in 2004 and 2006.
Henderson can probably find guaranteed playing time and more money elsewhere.
Should the Falcons be in hot pursuit of Big John? Who will get to slap him in the face before games?

ABSOLUTEY, they should sign him. Move Babineaux to DE (didn’t he play there a lot as a rookie?) and start Henderson next to Jerry. If you want to improve against the pass, then put close to 700 pounds of man at DT and send everyone else off the edge and dare a team to try to penetrate the middle. That’s why I was hoping the Falcons would draft someone like Dan Williams or Cam Thomas. Quick and penetrating is cute but give me big and immoveable.

Well, I was all giddy with the prospect of getting him. But not at that price. I have an instinctive, and indiscriminate love for any player who is described as “Big [insert name here].” Ah, how I miss you Big Grady Jackson. And you, performing at expectations Big John Abraham. To fill the hole in my heart, can we refer to Cory Peters as “Big Corey Peters”? That would make me happy. So would getting this guy if we let him sit on the market for a while, before he decided he wanted to come home to Papa Smith and Sugar Bear for a discount and a chance to contribute into the playoffs.

Does anyone know exactly how many DT’s we already have? I don’t think we should. We have Jerry who HAS to play to pan out as a former 1st rd’er. We have JA there too, time to expect more from our guys or get rid of them. I love the Falcons & will always be a fan but am starting to get sick of the “They are trying real hard” line.

I would have given Washington that 3rd rounder before the draft and gotten Haynesworth in here. Most of his guarantied $ had already been paid and the production compared to the price was more palatable. Haynesworth actually had a good point to his arguments. He told his agent specifically he did NOT want to play a 3-4. Then got forced into one. Those are not real character issues, just a guy who doesn’t like the way he’s being used.

The Falcons should try to sign “Big John” because he ,above all else, is a proven commodity,something no rookie or returning from injury rookie offers.But the chances of that happening are slim because if there are three things that we learned from the Falcon’s 2010 draft they would be:
1. the Falcons do not plan on competing for the Super Bowl in 2011. The picks were focused on long term stability and depth. They did not get any gamechangers in the deal and Big John would make sense from both parties perspective only if he was one of the last pieces to the puzzle for a Super Bowl run.
2. As planned, the defense got faster in general and the defensive backs got taller.
3. There must be a free agent being targeted for left tackle because there was none picked in the draft and the team cannot continue to risk their ginourmouse QB investment with the current incumbant.

If the price is right, you better believe it! Move Babineaux to DE. It does make the decision NOT to draft a DE a glaring mistake. However, Henderson still has some fire left and the young guys can learn from him. It also gives significant push up the middle which can only help Abraham, Biermann and Company.

Look at it this way. Babs is most likely headed for some kind of suspension. Big John could be a great mentor to these young guys as well as be a big producer on the field. So we pay $12M for two years. by the end of the two years we will hopefully have develop the younger guys into solid players without sacrificing D-line production.
Any possiblility of picking up G – Faneca, and/or a vet DE to help on the D-line? The Freak is out there as well as Charles Grant(off field probs) Seymore isn’t signed too bad the Raiders Franchised him
some others include Greg Ellis, Vonnie Holiday, Leonard Little, and Adewale Ogunleye.

As many have stated, we seem to really be loading up on DTs this off-season. Does this mean that the Falcons are concerned that Jerry won’t be ready or is this a necessity for BVG’s system? We still haven’t addressed DE, and we have obvious question marks there with Abraham on one side and Anderson having been moved mostly inside. Is there something TD and Smitty aren’t telling us?

That WR from Norfolk State mentioned earlier was kicked off the Penn State team after threatening a teammate with a knife. Not exactly our kind of guy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Henderson would be a significant upgrade here. Jacksonville experimented with different defensive schemes after Smitty left. It flopped, and now they’re completely rebuilding that defense. But Henderson is still young enough to have a few good years left in the tank. He knows Smitty’s schemes, plus he has the size to be the true nose tackle we need.
$6M per year is too high, but offer him $7M for two years and welcome him to Atlanta. Henderson, Jerry, Babs and Peters would make a very strong four man DT corps.
Something that doesn’t come up that often is that we still need the inside help with run defense. Yes, we finished with good stats, but we were in the bottom half of the league against the run right up until Buffalo mailed it in for week 16 and Tampa showed up for the finale with just one running back. Those two games make the official team statistics quite misleading.
John Henderson? No Thank you, the DT position is getting crowded as it is with developmental talent, more so if you count JA as a DT more or less.
Allow, Babs, Jerry, Peters, Walker the snaps to develop with JA rotating in on obvious short yardage running plays (his strength as I recall). Full roster, no vacancy, only so many snaps to be had.
As of earlier today OT’s Washington and Tepper were still undrafted. Talented guys who fell for their own reasons off the field–the sex scandal in Washington’s case and health concerns stemming from a hit-and-run injury on Tepper. On the field they are both solid even dominant in the case of Washington. With us being injury and scandal shy I could understand us passing on them for the above reasons but I hope we are flexible enough as an organization to be able to cope with players that aren’t from a perfect background. It gives too much of a strategic advantage to all the other clubs out here competing for talent.
I say Atlanta should bring him in on Wednesday and sign him(if he doesnt sign with KC. He will be there on Tue) I really think once he’s brought in we will release V. Walker or T. Lewis. He’s definitely an upgrade over either one of them. While Babs is out suspended I say start Henderson and Jerry with Peters coming off the bench. The wild card with Herderson coming in would be finding out what do do with Jamaal Anderson. I highly doubt he will be getting many snaps at DE. Since TD spoke about kicking Jamaal inside before, with this move now it almost seem like Andersons release would be imminent. If not i still say Henderson would definetly be worth picking up.
Yea D-Led…. I really think we find a gem in Franks… He has a boatload of potential… The guy has 2nd round talent… His problem was mental lapse in coverage sometimes… He just need Tim Lewis to coach him up…. I think Franks can be a future starting CB
Watching clips of Schillinger shocked me… Dude is fast, good ball skills (10 college ints), and a very good tackling center field FS…. He is going to be a really good Special teams guy but he has the potential to become a good backup FS
Allot of fans and experts are not high onour draft but i like it…. Of course i would have done some things differently but this draft will be felt in 2 or so years…. Hawley and Johnson will stepin as starters to give us a good young O-Line group that will protect Matt Ryan for years….
We know Spoon is a beast and Corey Peters will give us a strong 3 penetrating DT rotation (Babs, Peria, and Peters)… That inside pass rush will help out our DE’s… I looked at our 2009 games again… Kroy Biermann was even better then i thought.
I like some of the UDFA’s we got also. (TE Colin Peek, TE Leroy Banks, WR Brandyn Harvey, WR Ryan Wolfe, RB Dimitri Nance, and Kicker Garrett Lindholm)
Yes! I’d like to see the Falcons sign him. I don’t think we need a DE a badly as some of the other fans think. Kroy Biermann, Chauncey Davis, and Lawrence Sidbury are all solid players opposite of Abraham. There is a lot more that goes into getting pressure on the QB than just the DE play. If you put Henderson and Jerry in the middle while rotating Babineaux and Peter’s in then you’ve got a pretty good D-Line and more production will come from the DE’s.This coupled with a better group of Linebackers and seconday now that Weatherspoon and Robinson are in the mix could make for a really good defense. FYI: the Falcons defense gave up fewer point last season that the Saints defense.
Let me start by saying great blog D. Ledbetter. In regards to whether the Falcons should get big John Henderson, my answer would be No. First and foremost, developing our own players is the key to success in any franchise. All successful franchises develop their own players. (Patriots, Colts, Chargers, etc.) The reason I mention these teams are because these teams in particular consistently have won over the years without hindering the development of their younger players by bringing in proven veterans just because they are available. If they do bring in a veteran or two, it’s in a position that is considered a dire area of need. Look at how unsuccessful the Washington Redskins have been for example. They are an example of a team who constantly bring in big name free agents, but don’t take the time out to develop their own players. And as a result, they haven’t been too successful. I believe that Peria Jerry and Jonatham Babineaux can completely get the job done without any problem at all.
Besides, John Henderson would want to be a starter if signed here and in my opinion he doesn’t fit our system. I’m tired of reading these foolish comments that he played with Mike Smith in Jacksonville so that will make him successful here. Let’s not forget that Henderson played in a 3-4 scheme in Jacksonville where he played DE when he made the Pro Bowl in 2004 & 2006 due to the fact that he also had Marcus Stroud playing DT besides him. Too many people on here seem so infatuated with getting a ‘Big’ DT but what very few people realize is that you typically don’t have DT’s that big in a 4-3 scheme. We possess the best type of DTs for a 4-3 scheme. Babineaux isn’t that big, but quick enough to put pressure on the quarteback by using his agility to get past center or tackle. Peria Jerry is right at 300 lbs. Not a huge DT, but big enough to be effective against the run and strong enough to command a double team on passing situations. The reason Jacksonville let him go is because his numbers have gradually declined since Stroud went to the Buffalo Bills in 2008 which may show that he may not be a good fit for our 4-3 Defensive Scheme.
So, signing Henderson in my opinion would be more of a setback instead of a benefit not only for our organization, but for the younger players that we are trying to develop as well. All of this talk that Henderson could help the development of our young players is absurd. The development of our younger players like any young player in the league is determined by playing time and learning from mistakes. If we keep our players together we should make a strong push this year, and be a team to be reckoned with for years to come.
However, we still have a bigger need at DE. Sidbury was okay when he played and should get better. The Beer-Man was great for short stints and hopefully will be even better. Abraham was once a force, but who knows if last year was a fluke or a trend? Jamaal is a bust. Davis is a decent rotational player but he’s not scaring any QBs. Where is our pass rush? Do we pray we can get 4-5 sacks apiece from 8-9 players? We don’t have anyone who we can count on for 10+ sacks, so where are they going to come from?
I don’t want to see the Falcons go the way of the Braves (ie: have a known issue like hitting or leadoff and getting subpar people to “fix” the problem). My Dad and I are planning on going to either the Cleveland or Pit game (we’re transplants in upstate NY) and I don’t want a repeat of the last game I went to: at NE in 2009…I was embarrassed to be a Falcons fan that day, something I’ve been used to since ‘78 but thought I was passed worrying about under TD and Smith.
All you people on here who don’t want to sign Henderson – don’t come on here this fall when we get gashed up the middle (especially by the Saints and Panthers) and complain about our inability to stop the run up the middle. Our ability to stop the run up the middle is sitting there for the taking. John Henderson makes our entire defense better. Take him in a heartbeat and cut others to pay for it.
To ‘Falcon 21′. In regards to adding the Chargers to my analysis, I’m talking about their ability to win consistently. Granted not they have not proved themselves by not adding Lombardi trophies to their team museum, but you can count on them to win their division every year. They drafted and developed Rivers, Tomlinson, Gates, Merriman, Williams, Cromartie (Before being traded to the Jets), and a few others that aren’t worth mentioning. The point I’m trying to make is that they built around their core guys and whoever else they brought in to fill needs were just extra pieces.
I for one happen to like the Dunta Robinson signing because we needed a cornerback. Those types of moves I support. But why bring in an injury prone, declining veteran who has seen the best years of his career in on this team when the Defensive Tackle position is not an area of need. So if we sign Henderson then who will go to the bench? (Because you only pay a guy $12 million over a two year period only to start) Babineaux won’t sit well dropping as the third DT so do you trade a young promising DT for a 31 year old who has a couple of Pro Bowl visits but is obviously at the end of his career? Or do you send last year’s first round pick Jerry to third string? Which would therefore hinder his development as the player in which we drafted him to be.
In regards to all of this Jamal Anderson talk. He is not at all in my decision as why I don’t want Henderson as a Falcon. Our DE’s are set without Anderson (Abraham, Biermann, Davis & Sidbury). And so are our DT’s (Jerry, Babineaux, Peters, Johnson, Walker & Lewis). Our defensive line is set in my opinion. Look for Abraham and Biemann to start the season on opposite ends and for Jerry and Babineaux to shore up the middle. Look for Peters and Jerry to start the season off for the first four games since it is highly likely that Babineaux will be suspended for all of his off field issues.
This is just my assessment. Go Falcons!
Falcons may have more money than both the Braves and Hawks, but it doesn’t do them any good when the GM is not ready to be a GM in the NFL.
I really feel bad for all the dedicated Falcons fans that are pending their hopes on this current regime making the team into SB contenders. They are living in a Fantasy world.
TD still doesn’t get it…you don’t win championships w/o a defense or big men upfront. Just ask the Hawks organization how its team is doing with undersize Hartford against Mil sorry centers.
We need John Henderson for Depth and also he can teach the newbies, and that will help the DEs too. You get Abe, Henderson Jerry or Babs, Then Bierman or Sidbury. We always will have pressure. and the ones that say NO and Vet miniumum, its not your money. Do you want to win?
If it were last year, I’d have said “yes” emphatically.
We can say that Trey Lewis has had all the time in the world to develop, but the guy just hasn’t been on the field enough to do anything. JA98 will be ok as a run stuffer, but I’m looking for Corey Peters to move him down the depth chart.
In the meantime, either big Trey gets healthy and productive this year, or he can get gone. Hate to be like that, but we just don’t have time for this anymore.
It would be absurd to sign him after using such high draft picks on this position. Why take somebody’s discards when you have this young talent coming in. If you wanted to do that you should have just kept Grady Jackson. Dimitroff also said he likes his defensive line as they are now. He’s not going to waste his money on this washed up merchandise – he’s too smart for that! Now if a backup quarterback that doesn’t sell insurance as his primary vocation comes available – now you’re talkin” – let’s do it!
Bill — Thanks for the kind words.
screg — Let me check on Danario (I think he must be really slow. He’s got size).
Mystikal — I doubt if Adalius is on the radar screen. He kind of dissed Belichick last year and TD won’t stand for that. They won’t try to bring any real or perceived bad apples into the locker room.
ATLJBO — No problem. That took some time and my tweet followers will enjoy that production.
R. Merriweather — Nice take on the approach. I don’t think Big John is washed up, but starting him would hurt the development of the younger guys.
Okay, folks; why are people so worried about the price tag? It is not your money! This year is uncapped for one thing; also, we have an owner willing to spend his money to acquire talent that will bring a championship to our city! I would like to thank Mr. Arthur Blank for becoming wealthy enough, and willing enough, to change the culture of Professional Football in Georgia. There are certainly fans of football here; however, they have usually reserved their energy for their college team. The Atlanta Falcons have the right men in place to excite the fan base. Starting with Blank to dedicate himself to this franchise, then McKay to balance the checkbook, then Dimitroff to manage the roster and finally Coach Smith and his staff to teach and train the players how to win. The owner, coaches, players and fans here in G.A. are all determined and ready, and willing, and able to win a Championship! We should all expect nothing less from a state that gives so much to “America’s Game.” Go get Henderson because he gets us closer to that goal; the ultimate dream: to be called ‘Champion.’ How many of you readers agree with me?
That picture makes Big John look like he’s a biscuit or two bigger than Grady Jackson.This team needed Grady last year. I say sign Big John if the team has roster space & Mr. Blank will write the check. That would be a strong rotation for fresh bodies in the 4th qtr. Can you imaging a QB getting sandwiched between Peria Jerry & Big John at full speed? Mercy.
I would rather save the money for future upgrades elsewhere. I feel very comfortable with our guys in the middle of the defensive line. At this point I feel really good about where the defense is overall. The secondary should be set for years to come, as well as the middle of the DL. If the guys we already have can put a little pressure on the QB, we could have a really stellar year on the defensive side of the ball. On the offensive side of the ball, we are going to need Ryan to not be so scared to air the ball out. Roddy will go get the ball if he will air it out. It will be important for Ryan to put the ball up just to get Roddy excited about going out and getting those big numbers that he wants to achieve. The guy is a legit #1 receiver and if Ryan puts the trust in him to go get it, Roddy will not let him down. It is a psychology game that can play both ways. A QB that believes in his WR will not be disappointed, at least not with the talent that these guys share. They can achieve great things if they trust each other. Ryan was way to scared to make mistakes last year, and has to trust his best weapon to be just that for the team. Upgrades/depth on the OL and WR would be a better use of our resources at this point.
Go get him- 6′7 335 lbs. Most of our picks won’t make the team. Rounds 1 thru 6 won’t be major contributors this year anyway. Let the young guys learn from a good vet.
We are still in need of a WR and RB. I did a quick little research on NFL.Com and here are a few of the names that caught my attention.
What do you think?
RB-
Ronnie Brown- 5th year
Justin Fargas- 7th year
Samkon Gado- 4th year
Adrian Peterson- 8th year
Pierre Thomas- 3rd year
Brian Westbrook- 8th year
Cadillac Williams- 5th year
WR-
Miles Austin- 4th year
Mark Clayton- 5th year
Kevin Curtis- 7th year
Vincent Jackson- 5th year
Greg Lewis- 7th year
Lance Moore- 4th year
Mushin Mahammad- 14th year
I’m beginning to feel like the only guy in Atlanta that doesn’t think Chris Redman is worthy of being a starting quarterback in the NFL (for about half the season while Matt Ryan nurses a hurt toe or whatever may develop this year). I must have been watching a different game than everyone else last year as I kept seeing pass after pass batted down at the line of scrimmage. It scares me to death thinking we are one toe injury away from an utter breakdown as a team – yet here we are a Half $B franchise letting it all ride on this backup QB. Am I the only one out there that sees it like this?
Heck yes we SHOULD do everything that we can to bring in Big John! First of all, it amazes me as to how many people 4got that John Abraham had such better seasons when Grady Jackson was in the lineup, and there was a BIG body in the middle that took some of the attention away from him. The minute that we cut Grady, that’s when Abraham’s numbers began to dwindle. Why do you think that the Ravens doubled up on BIG men in the middle of their D-Line this year (Terrence Cody & Haloti NGata)? To keep OL off of Ray Lewis and the other LB’s so that they are free to make plays! Coach Smith used to have the same thing in Jacksonville with John Henderson and Marcus Stroud, and NOBODY wanted to attempt ANY runs up the middle! Look at the Vikings, who are BIG in the middle! On a different note, I love the UDFA picks of S-Rafael Bush, TE-Colin Peek, WR-Ryan Wolfe, LB-Bear Woods (special teams), RB-Dimitri Nance, and the kicker. I think that this unquestionably gives us tremendous depth for competition sake, and with that I believe that the best 53 players will make the team; but WOW, what a team! I forgot to mention Dominique Franks, Brandyn Harvey, & Dominique Daniels! For the first time in quite some time, I believe that the secondary (Safety’s & Corners), are the best that we have had in some time! I look 4ward to the Exibition Season to see who stands out!
I know it will pay off down the line but RIGHT NOW…that falcons are dangerously young on defense. I am all for getting another veteran to help out for a year or two while giving these young guys some time to learn and develop and not be rushed into being “THE GUY”. By adding a veteran you can play the young guys but not feel like you have to play them every down
Bill & DOL…I have been tracking Danario Alexander because the guy is a freak and would make a huge target for Ryan…however the knock on him is that he cant pass a physical as he has had 4 knee surgeries since 2008
As far as John Henderson goes he is a beast and I think that he would help the D however signing him defeats the purpose of what the front office has been doing and that is getting younger, faster and more athletic on D. I keep seeing the Grady Jackson comparisons and Im not sure that is a good thing.
Babs will be suspended and move to DE anyways… Peria is coming off an injury. Would hate to see us miss out on a playoff shot because we are weak in the middle of the defense.
Paying him for two years could be well worth it. I just dont see us making it to the superbowl without one more good free agent pick up in a needed spot at either WR or DT or DE. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why people are saying that Joghn Henderson is a malcontent! What did he ever do besides disagree with Jack Del Rio? So under this premise, I would imagine that these same people believed that Mike Peterson was a malcontent as well because he had a serious rift with Del Rio as well, but I don’t see anyone putting false labels on him! Both of these players flourished under Mike Smith, and after he came to the ATL, the defense in Jax began to suffer. That should say more about Coach Smith’s excellent vaunted defense, than players being considered “He is one lazy some beech” @ biggerthanbigdawg. The same pricipal that was used to bring Tony Gonzalez, and Mike Peterson to ATL should be the same case here! Bring in a proven veteran player to work with the young 1 to 2 year players, and teach them the FALCON way that is being set in motion! If we move Babineaux to DE, then there wouldbe no need to bring OSI to the ATL. Don’t get me wrrong, I love Osi, but some moves don’t make logistical or situational sense!
How do you draft so many guys w/ draft grades 2.7 or lower?
Why do we draft the second best receiver from Kansas when Dez Briscoe had 7.0+ draft grade?
Or Corey Peters in the 3rd with a 2.7 grade?
The un-drafted players or equal to the drafted players. Not one person yet, thinks highly of this draft. They aren’t bad players they were all just taken too early. We left too much talent on that board.
Moreover, I’m not enthused with this Far West Mountain Conference slant – what are we now the West End Minutemen???
The Falcons take “need based” and “scheme fit” guys, so their grades might be low to other teams and the player is rated higher on the Falcons’ board. That’s about the only way to explain what appears to be some reaches on draft day.
2009 TD signs Tony G. Falcons go 9-7 first time in team’s history back-to-back winning seasons
None of you guys slamming this draft and TD for not signing every has been ex-fantasy FB star would have a bet a dime in 2007 that the falcons would win 20 games over the next 2 years and yet you still think you know better, well you don’t
D-Led what is the interest level for released Jags LB Clint Ingram? In his 1st year, when Smitty was in J’ville, he was a BEAST.
If we’re going to only sign one or two more free agents this year, I would rather sign a DE and/or a WR…. I think two reasons we picked up Peters as early as we did was A- Babs suspension (we don’t want to fall off for those games) and B- A solid backup plan if Jerry is hurt again
Guys – I told you he liked what he’s got. He doesn’t want a fat DT. That’s why they dumped Grady Jackson. Deal with it!
The mark of a great team is the amount of depth it has.
Go get him now!!!!
Remember what happened to the team after they lost Jerry last year? The Falcons never recovered!
You can never have enough defensive tackles.
I definitely want to read a bit more soon. BTW, rather good design you have here, but what do you think about changing it from time to time?
