NFL Draft: Here’s the Falcons’ plan for Day Two

If the Falcons don't move into the second round, look for them to take an offensive linemen with one of their third round picks. (D. Orlando Ledbetter/AJC)

FLOWERY BRANCH — It’s “Day Two” of the first-ever three-day draft.

The Falcons have sent  Arthur Blank’s jet — that I like to call “Falcons One” –  for first round pick Sean Weatherspoon and his family. He’ll be meeting with the media at 4 p.m. today.

I’m not going to pound my chest over being the first to tell you all about the greatness of Florida center Maurkice Pouncey. No center had been taken higher than 21 over the last 10 years, so it was a pretty bold – but correct – forecast. I have to thank some of our longtime NFL sources for pointing that out to us early on in the process.

Here’s a quick look at what should be another stunning day in the draft:

SECOND ROUND: Will the Falcons pull the trigger to get into the second round? Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff didn’t sound too promising when I asked him about it late last night. He said it would be “rich” to get into the middle or lower third of the round.

FIRST DAWG TO GO: Who will be Georgia’s first player to get drafted? It’s likely to be defensive tackle Jeff Owens in the third round, followed by linebacker Rennie Curran, defensive tackle Geno Atkins and safety Reshad Jones might have wait until Saturday.

STANDING PAT: If the Falcons stand pat for today with their two third round picks, they’ll pick the 83rd and 98th players overall. The Falcons heavily scouted the center position. It’s likely they’ll take one today, but Boston College’s Matt Tennant, the pride of Cincinnati Moeller High, will likely be gone.

Here are some of the players the Falcons scouted who are still available:

Troy's Brandon Lang (91) and Eugene Kinlaw (99) combine to drop Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFebvour during the GMAC Bowl on Jan. 6, 2010 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. (Mobile Press-Register, Chip English)

When did Tennant become a second rounder?

I would agree that the center position will be addressed today. Unfortunately, I also agree that Matt Tennant will be gone by the third round. I think Thomas Dimitroff is right that the price to get into the second round would be “rich.”

Thanks for all the great work last night, D-Led.

Orlando, you are still on the Pouncey bandwagon, which he is a very good player but TD has said more than once since picking Spoon that he was their target all along. I believe by the way he was talking he’d have gone with Spoon even if Pouncey had still been there.

It is now proven that you had no clue about Pouncey (TD even said he was not thinking about him seriously – had him after Graham, Weatherspoon, and Morgon). Your writing ability is pretty poor for, ummmm, a blogger. You really have no clue as to what the Falcons are going to do…

Yes, Pouncey was picked before the Falcons selection, but TD didn’t even seriously consider him. We were targeting defense. Anyone could have seen that…

I think O-line is a more pressing need unless the right weapon is there. I would love for a good WR to fall to us, but that late in the draft, I doubt they could seriously beat out Douglas, Jenkins, or Finneran for the #2, or even #3.

DOL,

If the Falcons had indeed traded back to 22 or 25 with Denver (which might have given them a second round), do you have any ideas who would have been next on their wish list if Spoon was not available?

The Falcons have a lot of guys coming off injuries (Baker, Moore, Jerry, Harry Douglas), so we need to maximize our picks. I look forward to 2 good selections in round 3.

We probably get a mix on off./def. today. Thinking one lineman for both sides, a developmental C and developmental DE. ONly caveat is if we work a deal for Norwood, then I can see McCluster in the 3rd round vs. a DE.

Seattle — Tennant has been moving up over the last few weeks. He could still be there at 83. I’m thinking 4th or 5th on the WR. Looks like they looked at a bunch of possession guys. Remember the Saints got Colston in the 7th!

O’Brien — Jared Odrick would have been the pick under that scenario, but they really wanted Spoon and didn’t want to gamble on losing him.

Tale of Woe — Dimitroff told me and Schultz last night that Pouncey was 4th on their board behind Morgan, Graham and Spoon. My projected board had him 1. So we had some good info and weren’t that far off. Let’s move on to DAY TWO!!!

I really think the Falcons need to cut the chord on Norwood. He has been injured way too often, and 3 coaching staffs later, we havent been able to get maximum production out of him.

Get a RB (or WR) who can help out in the return game.

But we got a heck of a OLB and its a big need. GO Falcons!

Now I’m ready for some offensive linemen from this year’s draft to help protect Ryan. Last year Matt had very little time to view the field before there was a defensive player in his face. When I watched the Saints and the Colts last year, both QBs had so much time it was unreal. Hopefully we can get some offensive linemen that can come in and seriously challenge the current players. The O-line played extremely well in 2008, BUT in 2009 …. NOT!!!!!

I am the clown but you wouldn’t know one.
It is pretty apparent you don’t know much about the current roster. I broke it down yesterday several times and posted it. Here it is again. We have aging receivers and in dire need a good running back. Do you not remember Turner getting hurt last year?
Did you not see when TG was covered and White double teamed there was no where to throw the ball? Jenkins doesn’t cut it, Finneran stays hurt and is old, and we don’t know how Douglas will do coming off of surgery.
Here is 1st, 2nd and 3rd year players we have? Has everyone forgotten?
No one other than a WR or RB will help this year.
DL-
Kroy Biermann 3rd year
Peria Jerry 2nd year
Thomas Johnson 3rd year
Trey Lewis 3rd year
Maurice Lucas 2nd year
Vance Walker 2nd year
LB-
Spencer Adkins Rookie from Miami
Robert James 2nd year from Arizona State
Curtis Lofton 3rd year
Stephen Nicholas 4th year
OL-
Sam Baker entering 3rd year
Justin Blalock 3rd year
Ron Bruggerman Rookie from Iowa
Tyson Clabo- 5th year
Harvey Dahl- 5th year
Garrett Reynolds 2nd year
Blake Sclueter 2nd year
Jose Valdez 2nd year
Plenty of youth on D, and not enough on O, We need to spend that pick on an impact player for a RB or WR. The list above proves my theory.
Now look at our RB’s and WR’s
WR-
Troy Bergeron 2nd year
Harry Douglas 3rd year
Brain Finneran 10th year
Micheal Jenkins 7th year
Andy Strickland- 2nd year
Eric Weems 3rd year
Roddy White 6th year
RB-
Olvie Mughelli- 8th year
Jerios Norwood- 5th year
Antone Smith- 2nd year
Jason Snelling 4th year
Micheal Turner 7th year

DOL :
When I was watching lastnight, it was either ESPN or NFL Network (flipping between both whenever comercials would come on or Neon Dieon’s ugly face clouded the screen) and I saw listed on one the key additions for the Falcons this year : Dunta Robinson, Dan Klecko. I looked on the NFL.com site and sure enough he is listed as a Falcon. I read the AJC sports page online religously, I hate work and need the distraction. So my question is, WHEN did this happen and WHY did no one report it or did I just miss it? The guy Jeff posting @ 11:50am seems to have missed it as well.

Day 2, 3rd round : Decker WR Minnesota or Gilyard WR Louisville /// Jerry OT Ole Miss or Lang DE Troy.

Why people keep thinking Norwood has any trade value much less a high pick is beyond me but I hear it a couple times a day. They must have forgotten that Donovan Mcnabb only fetched a 2nd in this years draft. Brandon Marashall got a 2nd. Norwood is not Mcnabb or Marshall. I woudln’t trade a 6th rounder for him

Let the draft come to you – there’s too much talent in this draft to give away picks to move up. We’ll find plenty still available in the 3rd round. I am hoping to address the center and receiver positions. I could see a Javier Arenas (KR/CB) and J.D. Walton (C) combo. That would make me pretty happy.

We aren’t going to find year one starters in the 4th round and below, so let’s build some depth at offensive line, defensive end, and corner. With Jamal Anderson moving to tackle and Peria Jerry back, I think tackle might be ok.

Norwood should be given a shot as a slot receiver as Terrence Mathis was or Wes Welker is before he is given up on. He has break away speed but not break through size as his stints on IR have shown. He also has shown to have good hands so if the coaching staff really wants to find a way to get him the ball as they claim then that should be the route to get it to him while he is still standing. If they cut the cord without trying and somebody else picks him up and decides to throw him the damn ball it could be Favre all over again. It sure won’t cost anything to find out.

Willy

This has got to be Norwood’s last year, and I’d be surprised if everybody in the NFL wouldn’t know that. Packaging him with Jenkins, though, might be something.

I said it once and I’ll say it again: The best scenario for day 2 for the falcons would be:

1st 3rd rounder: Matt Tennant, C Boston College, or John Jerry OT Ole Miss
2nd 3rd rounder: Brandon LaFell, WR LSU

Brandon LaFell is a better possession reciever than Riley Cooper and Jordan Shipley, and a better blocker than both. He fits into the falcons scheme nicely, and wouldnt you like to see a WR group of White, Jenkins, Douglass, and LaFell?

I think we pick up an offensive lineman…I think Matt Tennnant will be there at 83 for us, but If he is not I say we go with John Jerry, Peria’s brother at OT, he is a beast at 6′6 328 lbs and can play guard as well, which TD loves in an O-lineman.

The Real Falcon

TD’s comments:

Were you surprised that Pittsburgh took Pouncey at pick 18? Was he someone that you were high on?
“He was another guy that was definitely a consideration for us. He was one of the scenarios that we looked very closely at. I had a discussion with Kevin Colbert at Pittsburgh and I knew that they were very zeroed in on a player. I had assumed that Pouncey was their player, so it was not something that I really thought would come into fruition for us. In the end if he were to be sitting there at the same time as Sean, we would have picked Sean.”

That’s why he is the GM! Thank goodness.

We have to give Matt another weapon on the field. I love Norwood but our return game does not put fear into any teams hearts. With Douglas returning punts, he was solid but will he be 100% this year. Finneran has been solid in the community, but we need someone to grow with our QB as this team grows. Look at what Cribbs did for a terrible Browns team he kept them in at least 4 games singlehandedly, also Percy Harvin is a versatile & game changing player. We need a shot in the arm on the offensive or return side of the ball, we’ve been hearing every year that coaches have put a package in for Jerious. I have yet to see him streaking down the sideline after taking a hitch pass or screen. We saw Percy do this too many times last year. Defensively trying another DE would make sense but we’ve been down that road as well, with all the picks we have waisted we could have signed a Jared Allen, a Jason Taylor, or a Van de Bocsh or any decent vet opposite Abraham. Let’s hope this staff will let the young birds on defense grow up, and put some offensive electricity into this good football team

What is all this talk about a center? Is there something wrong with Todd McClure?? He is only 33 and has played something like 125 straight games. He is still good for several more seasons. The Falcons can afford to wait and pick up a project as his eventual replacement. BTW, McClure was a 7th round pick.

Also, why does everyone think signing Dunta Robinson solves all the problems in the defensive backfield ? They still need more DBs which was glaringly obvious after Brian Williams and Chris Houston got injured.

Agreed but why not sign an aging RB in FA (like LT or Thomas Jones)and hope Turner doesn’t get hurt and deal Snelling for a proven DE.
I went to both Giants and Jets game vs Falcons last year and no doubt Snelling proved he could start ar RB in this league.

be honest…they barely contribute anything at WR.

MG, I can see you are one of the ignorant people I was just talking about, so I will spell it out for you. Roddy White is obviously a pro bowler, no question there. Michael Jenkins is a number three wide receiver at best, he drops way too many important catches. Harry Douglas I normally would feel like could feel that nuber two wide receiver role, but he is coming off a major injury. Finneran, I like, but is old and gets hurt way too much. Never mind the fact that I did not state we needed a wide receiver, just stating that Jeff still listed some pretty good ones that are left. I will state it now though. WE EVENTUALLY NEED A WIDE RECEIVER IN THIS DRAFT, MG, YOU IGNORANT BAST***D!

I guess because we have tied up all of our cash on DL and OL, look at my roster above. We are loaded with young talent on the lines.

Turner is in year 7, snelling in year 4. We don’t want to get rid of him. If anything trade Norwood and Jenkins for him, if that don’t do it throw in a 2011 pick.

Witherspoon will help but there was not a desperate need at LB. In my opinion they had a diamond layed in their lap and threw it on the ground. Dez Bryant is top 10 talent on every board and the Falcons would have improved their offense by 50 % overnight by chosing him. He got a bad rap from the NCAA royalty but never was accused of violating any laws or being involved in immoral acts. He is an Academic All American and will be all-pro within 3 years.

MG, just shut your trap. You lost all credibility when you suggested to trade Jason snelling. Why the hell would we do that when he is a very good running back and we are paying him nothing substancial? We have plenty enough picks left in this years draft to take care of the rest of our needs.

MG

Hey Chump
If we need a WR so bad why not address it in FA ?
Plenty of good ones out there. Plus any WR still available in round 3 is not what I want. WAY TOO many other holes to fill on this team.
If we build a great D maybe we can hold NO to under 70 points in the two games we play them this year.

Flo-Ri-Duh: A Wr would have been a waste. We don’t want to get into scoring battles every game. Defense wins. We needed to be able to stop someone first and foremost. And trust, you will see Weatherspoon is a big upgrade over Peterson( Not that I dislike you Mike if you are reading this)

Robert, I don’t agree with you on the Weatherspoon thing, I think he’s the real deal. But I do agree on the Eric Norwood, Jordan Shipley thing. You put Weatherspoon and Norwood on each side of Lofton man that would be a solid fast group of linebackers. Also if not Shipley, Cooper, Ford, LaFell or Gilyard would, also be solid. Roddy needs sombody to take the double teams off him. And Jenkins has never been able to do that. Fenn can’t stay healthy, and Douglas is a slot.

MG, I am glad to see you are freely willing to spend all of the owners cash. I think maybe Arthur blank may have a problem with that though. In a dream world it would certainly work to go out and get the best free agent wide receiver, damn the money, but this is not a dream world. You have failed to remember one very important thing, Dimitrioff likes to build through the draft. He has only signed about one big free agent acquisition a year since he has been here. This year it was Dunta Robinson. However, just for arguments sake, who would you suggest we sign as a free agent wide receiver?

Roy Williams is set to make arouns 13 million this year and the cowboys are not going to just give him away.

Snelling won’t be traded b/c the RB class this year is too deep. We have a better chance getting someone like Charles Grant, but that won’t happen either b/c off the field issues.

I would like to see us give Kevin Matthews a shot. He is a center out of Texas A&M. His dad is Bruce Matthews. We passed up on Clay Matthews last year and he made the pro bowl. I wouldn’t look for Kevin to make the pro bowl this year, but I would be willing to bet that he will develop into a great NFL player like his dad.

Just my 2 cents for what it’s worth…just over 2 hrs till the draft resumes. Go ATL!!!

So many people on here missing the point. TD sais before the draft that his goal is to accumulate as many PRO BOWL caliber players on the roster as possible, regardless of position. His thinking is that if you have many PRO BOWL caliber players you will likely have a good squad. He sees Weatherspoon as that type of player, and looking at his measurables and production it’s easy to see why. 6′1″ 240 running a 4.68 and being named first team all-conference three times in a pass-happy league? I’ll gladly take him.

I really like the Spoon pick but I agree, we could definitely use a #2 WR. I’m not a GM by any means but I might trade a couple of picks, 3rd and 4th, to move up and grab a Tate or a Benn. We could still grab Tennant or another C/O-line with our 3rd comp pick.

Yo D-Led! Thanks for the insights. Tell me, tell me, tell me………

What would a package of JA98, Norwood and Jenkins bring? Osi? Osi plus a 2nd? Osi plus and late pick? Would/has Dimitroff considered? From a production standpoint, we can afford to lose any or all of these guys and retool at their positions in a very deep draft. Obviously, the more picks we can amass, the better.

Odell Thurman is only 26. Has be been banned permanently from the league, or has his behavior been so bad no one will touch him?

Also, Adam “Punkman” Jones … there was supposedly some teams looking at that knucklehead a couple of weeks ago. Was that just so much agent-talk, or will he actually be able to get a third chance in the NFL?

Speaking in tongues….No bad attitudes allowed in Flowery Branch. Neither sherrif will allow. For the same reason, you won’t see a TO, Roy Williams, and any number of other “ME FIRST” players. I wouldn’t be opposed to picking up a Muhsin Muhammad, though. I’m a Dawg fan, but no way Thurman would work in this environment. Raiders, maybe. Face it, if he couldn’t work with the collection of head cases on the Bengals roster, where could he? Jones couldn’t even make it in the Cowboys’ zoo.

Not many on those WR lists that would interest me, but TD knows a lot more about most of them than I do. He’s probably willing to take a flyer on a late round “project” at WR. They tend to work harder and appreciate the chance more than the prima donas in the early rounds. Kind of the anti-diva. Plus, lots of good ones come late. Look at Myles Austin and NO’s Colston. We NEED one of them in this draft.

Lay off Tebow. I hope he proves all of you haters WRONG. Great athlete and the guy has got values and morals, no character issues in my book. Maybe he is getting so much flack from you people because he is or just happens to be a child of the KING. Yea, he is human and he ain’t perfect, but damn near close. TEBOW continue to keep GOD first and you will always, most always be on top. Let your HATERS be your MOTIVATORS. Go out there, learn all you can and then knock their teeth out. This will only make you stronger TEBOW. I love it seems like the Broncos, Jets, Rams and Raiders are doing what needs to be done for their team in the draft. FALCONS take notes. Brandon Lang should be next on your list.
