From Mom: 5 things fans need to know about Spoon

Elwanda Weatherspoon and her son, Sean. (Brant Sutherlin/AJC)

Elwanda Weatherspoon and her son, Sean. (Brant Sutherlin/AJC)

FLOWERY BRANCHElwanda Weatherspoon, the mother of Falcons first round pick Sean Weatherspoon, is a veteran school teacher. She teaches the third and fourth grades in Jasper, Texas.

She let us know that Weatherspoon, the Falcons first round draft pick, is quite the singer.

Mrs. Weatherspoon and her husband Develous raised the family in the church. The hard-hitting Sean grew up singing in the choir at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church where Rev. John D. Hardin is the pastor.

She tells Falcons fans 5 things they need to know about her youngest son:

  1. He’s a people person. He loves all people.
  2. He’s very energetic.
  3. He talks a lot. He got that from his mother.
  4. He loves his family.
  5. And, he will become the type of player that the Atlanta fans what him to be. He will work hard.

Loving that the Falcons picked a high-character guy with a nonstop motor. Dimitroff and Smith are trying to model their ballclub after teams that had championship dynasties, not just two good years in a row. The methodical way that they are building the Falcons has me really excited.

The 6-foot-3, 302-pound Peters led the SEC in tackles-for-loss and sacks among his peers this past season. He was first-team All Conference Coaches and second-team AP. Peters is gifted athletically, aggressive and can do a lot of things in the trenches. He’s a good overall player but does have some flaws. Peters must improve on his upper body strength and finishing plays. His strength has improved, which was made evident at the school’s Pro Day when he banged out 26 reps of 225 pounds. He put up some pretty good numbers during the workout to increase his draft stock. – Dayton Daily News

PRO DAY RESULTS: Rookie head coach Joker Phillips opened the doors for 10 teams to watch 13 players work out indoors on FieldTurf. DL Corey Peters (6-foot-3, 301 pounds) had a solid workout in the positional drills. Peters ran 4.90 and 4.91 seconds in the 40-yard dash, a 4.49 short shuttle, 7.31 three-cone drill, posted an 8-foot, 7-inch broad jump, and 26 bench press lifts. Peters chose to keep his vertical jump numbers from the combine. – Gil Brandt, NFL.com

Mike Johnson, 6-5, 312, Alabama, 3: Johnson was the unquestioned leader of the offensive line that opened the way for Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram and helped the Crimson Tide roll to a national championship in 2009. He is a cerebral blocker who adjusts quickly, plays with a high motor and is able to play on either side as a guard or tackle. He started 41 consecutive games, including 26 at left guard, 10 at right tackle, three at right guard and two at left tackle. He set a school career record when he played against Texas in the 2010 BCS championship game, his 54th contest for the Crimson Tide

Peters will probably play DE not DT for us. Runs a 4.9 40. Saban, Meyer, etc. voted him 1st team SEC – good enough for me!

Round 1-Sean Weatherspoon/OLB/Mizzouri
Round 3-Cory Peters/DT/Kentucky
Round 3-Mike Johnson/OG/Alabama…. Ok so we have 2 players from the dominate SEC today… And Peters must be a good player to make the SEC first team so I don’t think we should bash him.. And Johnson blocked for the Heisman trophy winner so he has some pretty good talent… We took care of the needs in the trenches now we can go look for the more flashy picks… I like Dezmon Briscoe or Riley Cooper being drafted by Atlanta in Round 4… And don’t be surprised if we get RB Joe McKnight if he is still around… There’s still some very good offensive talent thats out there so lets not bash our picks from today.. And it looks like we all agree that Weatherspoon is a monster.. I think he should wear number 51

Look for the Johnson kid to replace Blalock. Also, lets look to get some offensive threats tomorrow. Mardy Gilyard, Jacoby Ford, and Aaorn Hernandez all still on board.

Thank God TD and Coach Smith know what they are doing, as admittedly, most of the bloggers posting don’t know “what the hell” they are doing. Seems like Mr. Blank has a pretty smart team in place.

ESPN and NFL Network coverage of Falcons picks are just like AJC’s coverage – worthless.

Looking for updates after rounds 2 & 3 are over and what do I get from AJC? A lame list of junk from Weatherspoon’s Mom.

At least the fans are taking care of reporting the news in the comments section.

I actually like Mike Johnson but I don’t get the Corey peter choice especially where we have depth and could have waited on him in the 4th E. Griffen should have been the choice or a tight end. I think we might trade the 4th rounder tomorrow for the Cowboy’s Marcus Spears and I heard John Henderson is available and I’ll bet if he is the Falcons could offer J-ville a 3rd in next years draft for him cause I know Mike Smith LOVES him.

I would not be suprised to see another OL pick, maybe a S, and if the right RB was there maybe that position also. I’m a big UGA fan, but I think Dwyer would be a beast in our system. Maybe take a TE also – Tony will be 34 this season, but taking a raw prospect might be a possibility. They could sit for 3 years and learn from one of the best TE’s ever.

I also wouldn’t be suprised if we drafted another DT – just a feeling.

STEVE,

why would we pick another DT? we got jerry comin’ back from last year, we jus’ picked up a DT today and you think another one? why? william moore will be back and we took him in the 2nd rd. last yr. i don’t see us pickin’ a S. OL, i can see, we really need a DE. i think dwyer was a product of the system. i don’t think that he will pan out in the league.

Considering babs pending suspension, J.A. 98`s non production, and P. jerry`s ability to stay healthy in question, this pick makes perfect sense. Give the guy a chance before you throw him under the bus. GEEZ!!!!! The falcons continue to send the message that they want the high character team players, not the MV7`s and MEANGELO HALLS of the past. What a difference from a few years ago. I love it.

Solid draft so far, though I have to say the Corey Peters pick had me flummoxed.

DT IS a position of concern. Babs will get suspended for his legal issues, Walker and Johnson are probably just backups, JA98 will be a run stuffer but possibly nothing more, nobody knows anything about Lewis, and Jerry is coming back from injury. He may as well still be a rookie.

Peters, All-SEC first team…

Spoon will be everything Michael Boley was supposed to be. Boley had the speed, but he was anything but urgent and explosive. Spoon will be both of those and more.

Funny, the Giants wanted McClain badly. Probably because they saw Boley for what he truly is…

Wow, how do you get to be first team SEC and totally unknown by football fans in Atlanta?

ESPN sux. Their guys talked about Colt McCoy thru several picks. I thought this was about the team and the player they were picking. I’m not watching tomorrow. I’ll find out who we pick another way.
I like Spoon but I’m not sure about Peters & Johnson. Researching Peters, it says virtually unknown in NFL circles when senior season began, is now projected as high as a 5th round pick with the hope of climbing higher. He did.
It says Mike Johnson, probably a reserve in 2010 for Harvey Dahl. Johnson is a projected 4th rounder.
I like TD & MS, & I hope they are making the good choices, but I don’t give them my blind trust, and say do anything you want and I’ll be happy. If they take our best picks and some of them are busts, I’m not happy. Last year our 1st & 2nd rounders hardly played. If these guys turn out good, and I hope they do, everything is fine.
Let’s get some good picks tomorrow

I find it’s best to switch back and forth between ESPN and the NFL Network for the best coverage. It’ll be especially good tomorrow, since the later rounds will have players that the non diehard fans haven’t heard of but guys who are just as important to the team than the top round players are.

Anyway, I enjoy the NFL Network because of Brian Billick and ESPN because of Jon Gruden. Two ex SB winning coaches whom I could listen to all day.

Another native Atlantan, Falcon fan now living in the heart of Cowboy country, Big D as they call it here. Congratulations Mrs. Weatherspoon on raising what seems to be a fine young man you can be proud of(you too Develous), and congratulations Sean on becoming the Falcons 1st round pick. You’re gonna love Atlanta and don’t forget to BRING IT!!! It’s a good thing about the singing background, because if I remember correctly the Falcon’s rooks have to sing for the entire team. Best of luck and Go Falcons.
