FLOWERY BRANCH – The Atlanta Falcons could throw “The Polian Plan” into action during the 2010 NFL draft, which is set for 7 pm. Thursday.

Who should the Falcons select with the 19th pick in the draft?

Bill Polian
, the Indianapolis Colts’ wise talent evaluator, has made it a priority over the past decade to surround quarterback Peyton Manning with offensive weapons and then find his defensive players later.

The Falcons may want to do the same thing with quarterback Matt Ryan and continue to add weapons on offense.

Some of Polian’s first-round picks for the Colts have included running back Edgerrin James (1999), wide receiver Reggie Wayne (2001), tight end Dallas Clark (2003), running back Joseph Addai (2006), wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (2007) and running Donald Brown (2009).

So while the Falcons appear to have a more pressing need in improving the defense — the team ranked 10th against the run (106.8 yards per game) and 28th against the pass (242.1 yards per game) last season — Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff could turn in a draft card with either Georgia Tech wide receiver Demaryius Thomas‘ or Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham’s name on it.

David Caldwell, director of college scouting.

David Caldwell, director of college scouting.

There is a Polian influence in the Falcons’ draft room. David Caldwell, the team’s director of college scouting, spent 10 seasons with the Colts before joining the Falcons in April of 2008. He played linebacker in college at John Carroll. (Aside: Quick, who’s the famous former NFL head coach who has the stadium named after him at  John Carroll in suburban Cleveland? Answer below.)

Here’s how the Falcons’ draft day plans are shaping up:

1. THE POLIAN PLAN: Add a weapon for the offense.

If the Falcons stay put at 19, they’ll have shot at Gresham and Thomas. I’m projecting that they have Gresham rated higher than Thomas. He could come in and work with Tony Gonzalez while he improves his blocking.

Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma, 6-foot-5, 261 pounds: Gresham did not play last season after having surgery for torn cartilage in his right knee. He started his college career as a wide receiver for the Sooners. Former NFL executive Gil Brandt compares the fleet Gresham to Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow Sr.

Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech, 6-3, 224: The fact that he suffered a broken foot while preparing for the draft has not hurt his value. He’s the second receiver rated in the draft and appears to be a first-round lock. He showed his speed on streak routes at Tech as well as his blocking ability in the run game. He has to develop into an NFL-level route runner.

2. TRADE DOWN TARGETS: Get defensive help, second rounder

Under this scenario, the Falcons could end up trading down and picking up a second round pick. A trade down would signal they are going defense. Cincinnati and Baltimore could be trade partners. The Bengals like Gresham and the Ravens like Thomas.

Sean Weatherspoon, LB, Missouri, 6-1, 241: Affectionately called “Spoon,” he led the team in tackles the past three seasons and was a team captain. Excellent motor and plays well in coverage. “If you play in the Big 12, every week you’ve got to come out and guard receivers,” Weatherspoon said. “You don’t want to be a liability in passing situations. I’m glad I played in the Big 12, and that will definitely help me out.”

Daryl Washington, LB, TCU, 6-2, 226: Played inside in the Horned Frogs 4-2-5 defense. He’s projected as an outside linebacker in the NFL, where he might need to add about 10 pounds.

3. TRADE UP TARGETS: The Baker move

Like he did with Sam Baker in 2007, if Dimitroff sees a player  slipping away,  the Falcons could make a little jump up to get him.  Dimitroff said in a radio interview that it would cost about $8 million jump to move from 19 to the low teens. It wouldn’t cost as much to leapfrog over Pittsburgh in to get a clear path at Florida center Maurkice Pouncey if he gets past Denver or to take a shot at Michigan defensive end Brandon Graham.

Maurkice Pouncey, C/G, Florida, 6-5, 318: He has been heavily scouted by the Falcons. Pouncey felt he did well diagnosing plays on the chalk board for the team at the NFL Scouting Combine. He won the Dave Rimington Trophy, which goes to the nation’s top center. He also played some right guard during his career. The 10-year chart (2000-09) reveals that only five centers have been drafted in the first round and none was selected higher than the 21st pick.

Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan, 6-1, 263: He’s the first defensive player in Michigan history to be voted the team’s most valuable player twice. He made a lot of plays (41 percent of his tackles) behind the line of scrimmage. Graham is stout, bench-pressing 225 pounds 31 times at the combine. He also had a good showing at the Senior Bowl and could be taken before the Falcons’ selection.

Well, in the Final Mock draft, (the one that counts), we side with The Polian Plan.  Tonight we should hear this, “With the 19th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, the Atlanta Falcons select Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham.”

AJC’s 2010 FINAL MOCK DRAFT

Staff writer D. Orlando Ledbetter projects the first round:

The Falcons could see Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford in his rookie season if he's selected, as expected, by the St. Louis Rams. The Falcons play at St. Louis on Nov. 21.

The Falcons could see Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford in his rookie season if he's selected, as expected, by the St. Louis Rams. The Falcons play at St. Louis on Nov. 21.

1. St. Louis Rams: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma, 6-foot-4, 236 pounds. In the past two drafts, the Rams passed on quarterbacks Mark Sanchez, Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco. This time they pull the trigger.

2. Detroit Lions: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska, 6-4, 302. Coach Jim Schwartz, a former defensive coordinator, values a strong front line.

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma, 6-4, 298. The Bucs get someone to anchor the defensive front and hope that he’s another Warren Sapp.

4. Washington Redskins: Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State, 6-5, 307. New coach Mike Shanahan wants someone to help get his running attack rolling. He needs a replacement for Chris Samuels, who retired because of a neck injury.

5. Kansas City Chiefs: Brian Bulaga, OT, Iowa, 6-6, 312. The Chiefs go with Bulaga to help anchor the line. He fits the personality of the team that Scott Pioli is trying to establish.

Bryan Bulaga, Iowa.

Bryan Bulaga, Iowa.

6. Seattle Seahawks: Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech, 6-4, 272. With the retirement of defensive end Patrick Kerney and the trade of defensive end Darryl Tapp, the Seahawks take Morgan.

7. Cleveland Browns: Eric Berry, DB, Tennessee, 5-11 5/8, 211. Only five safeties have been taken in the top 10 over the past 10 years. Berry, of Creekside High, becomes the sixth.

8. Oakland Raiders: Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers, 6-6, 325. The Raiders are comfortable with the explanation from Rutgers coach Greg Schiano about Davis’ fluctuating weight.

9. Buffalo Bills: C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson, 5-11, 196. The Bills want to run the football and need to surround their quarterbacks with a weapon.

10. Jacksonville Jaguars: Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama, 6-4, 256. The Jags are not scared off by the fact that McClain has Crohn’s disease.

11. Denver Broncos: Maurkice Pouncey, C/G, Florida, 6-5, 318. The Broncos want to anchor their offensive line with the Dave Rimington Award winner.

12. Miami Dolphins: Sergio Kindle, LB, Texas, 6-4, 255. The Dolphins have to replace outside linebackers Joey Porter and Jason Taylor.

13. San Francisco 49ers: Joe Haden, CB, Florida, 5-10 3/4, 193. The 49ers are not afraid of the slow 40-time he ran

at the NFL scouting combine.

14. Seattle Seahawks: Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma, 6-5, 318. The Seattle need to fortify their offensive line.

15. New York Giants: Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan, 6-1, 263. The Giants believe you can never have too many defensive ends.

16. Tennessee Titans: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida, 6-6, 265: The Titans are in the defensive end market after losing Kyle Vanden Bosch in free agency.

17. San Francisco 49ers: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame, 6-2, 223. The 49ers have seen enough of Alex Smith to know he’s not a franchise quarterback.

18. Pittsburgh Steelers: Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State, 5-10, 194. The Steelers have to address their porous secondary.

Some have Clemson flash C.J. Spiller going to Seattle as high as No. 6.

Some have Clemson flash C.J. Spiller going to Seattle as high as No. 6.

19. Falcons: Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma, 6-5, 261. The Falcons can’t resist his potential and take the best player available on the board. He’s projected to be the next great tight end in the league by some.

20. Houston Texans: Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State, 5-11, 220. The Texans want to add a running game to give quarterback Matt Schaub more weapons.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma, 6-2, 225. The Bengals have a program in place to help players with a history of problems.

22. New England Patriots: Jared Odrick, DE, Penn State, 6-5, 301. He has the size to play that hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker spot in the mold of Mike Vrabel.

23. Green Bay Packers: Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State, 5-11, 190. The Packers have him rated as the best cornerback in the draft, and he’s a nice system fit.

24. Philadelphia Eagles: Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama, 5-10, 196. Played his career in the shadows of Javier Arenas, but he’s the better pro prospect.

25. Baltimore Ravens: Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech, 6-3, 224. Perfect spot for Thomas, who can learn from veterans Anquan Boldin and Derrick Mason.

26. Arizona Cardinals: Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee, 6-2, 329. He is a brute force player who’ll fit nicely along side of Darnell Dockett.

27. Dallas Cowboys: Earl Thomas, S, Texas, 5-10 1/4, 208. The Cowboys like his versatility in coverage.

28. San Diego Chargers: Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech, 5-11 1/2, 222. The Chargers need to get their ground attack flourishing again and are impressed with the former ACC player of the year.

29. New York Jets: Everson Griffen, DE, USC, 6-3, 278. Is a natural fit for Rex Ryan’s defense.

30. Minnesota Vikings: Chris Cook, CB, Virginia, 6-2, 212. The Vikings need a big cornerback to go against the receivers they face in the NFC North.

31. Indianapolis Colts: Mike Iupati, G, Idaho, 6-5, 325. A small school product who fits nicely in the Colts’ blocking scheme.

32. New Orleans Saints: Sean Weatherspoon, LB, Missouri, 6-1, 241. The Saints have to get stronger on the flanks and must replace Scott Fujita, who signed with Cleveland in free agency.

DOL,

William Moore was injured in college, and he got injured last year after we drafted him. Sam Baker was injured in college, and he got injured last year after we drafted him. So as much as I like Gresham, I am concerned about his injuries.

I dont see the Falcons taking a TE, because he would not contribute much this year, and we have no second round picks. So we would not get a player who might help the 2010-2011 Falcons until the 3rd round, and I dont think our GM and coaching staff want to wait that long.

I say Falcons go defense at 19, or trade back and pick up a second round pick, and then go offense.

If Denver takes Pouncey with the 11th pick, I think Denver fans will be in an uproar. I think he falls to Pittsburgh.

The Real Falcon — I think you’re wrong. Pouncey will go 11th or 19th (if Steelers don’t trade Big Ben to Raiders add give up that pick as part of the deal).

O’Brien — So you’re not buying this well thought out Bill Polian Plan — add to the offense, fix defense later.

London Falcons — Enjoy!!!!

If I’ve learned anything, DOL, you absolutely have no clue. Every time I log on here, you’re telling us why this player and that player is the guy the Falcons will pick. I guess you’ve covered every option by now.

And Jared Odrick, @ 301 lbs., as a hybrid DE/LB? Are you friggin’ kidding me?

To be a fly on the walls in conference rooms around the league today. Please, please let Berry and Dan Williams end up in solid franchises (that means no Oakland’s and hopefully no Cleveland’s)…I’d hate to see EB reduced to playing the run as the opposition runs out the clock..!

DOL,

I like the Polian plan. I just dont like it (for this year) because Gresham would not help us out this year (since we already have Gonzales). And I’m not so sure Gonzales wont be productive for this season AND next. He stays in shape, eats right, and shows no signs of slowing down.

I think Pouncey goes to Pittsburgh. With Big Ben out for 4-6 games, that position (Center/Guard) becomes more important if its going to be Dixon or Batch under center.

After last year’s draft netted zero starters and almost no situational players, if I were TD, I would be real leery going after damaged goods again (please see Jerry and Moore), Gresham would be an extremely foolish choice for that reason.

It is extremely obvious that your MO this year is to go against the grain and pick an offensive player to appear that you have some insight that most analysts do not have.

That indeed may work, and TD made many reaches last year and some will argue a pretty good reach for Baker (another injury prone pick) as well in 2008, because I would consider everyone of your picks a pretty severe reach at 19. 1) A center rated below many last year and when there are high value center picks later in the draft, 2) a receiver that never had to run routes, has a broken foot and has the dropsies and 3) an injured tight end.

If we pick any of those rather than dropping down and shoring up our defense, I will be severely disappointed. Now if Spiller drops to us, then you have a decision to make.

Wow.. 3 Yellow Jackets in the 1st round would be awesome. It could also be a huge selling point in recruiting for GT. Hope it pans out that way. I am not so sure I would pull the plug and go TE with the 1st pick. I think DE, OLB or OL are the main priorities for this team to address in the 1st round. If you can’t get the player you want at #19, then trade down and pick up more picks and add more depth. Just sayin’…

I see Rick Gosselin in Dallas has us taking Mike Iupati. I’d rather go for. a great offensive player than a mediocre defender (not that Weatherspoon or Graham is mediocre).

If Dimitroff were to pick Billy Bob Bobo from Cotton Patch State, then I’d believe Billy Bob was the finest player available. Whomever we pick will be our newest Falcon, so let’s support him no matter who it is.

Big draft for TD, after an outstanding 2008. 2009 yielded no starters, three OCCASIONAL situational players, his first two picks were injury prone and turned out to be just that – injured. And after picking four, that’s right count’em four CBs in two years, we needed to sign a free agent CB to big bucks.

We need a lift out of this draft, a replay of 2009 would be disastrous. So, here is to TD regaining the magic touch of 2008 because it sure was missing in 2009.

Tony G seems to be in great shape isn’t it possible that if the falcons have a great year that he could hang around at a higher level than most tight ends for a couple more years ?
does anyone remember who the fastest player at the combine was this year , I know it doesnt matter but I like to keep my eye on the burners, and see who goes after the speed in the draft
who knows if someone is fast enough Davis might take him in the first round and let a better player fall to the falcons.

No NFL team has ever used more than one tight end at a time. Nope. Couldn't happen.

Everyone saying Gresham couldn’t play this year because we have Tony Gonzalez … Explain to us exactly what’s stopping us from rolling out both at the same time? You’ve heard of a two TE set, haven’t you? Not to mention the fact that both players have experience at splitting out wide, meaning one or both can play a little WR.

This would be a fine pick. Gresham would have 2 years to learn from the greatest tight end in history.

Why spend it on Gresham and his bum knee in the 1st when you can get Dorin Dickerson or Jimmy Graham in the 3rd?

They already spent this years 2 on a TE. There are 5 or 6 very good TE’s in this draft. I’m not angry at them if they take Gresham (especially if they trade with the Pats and get back in the second) but if they take him at 19…. how are you going to get more urgent rushing the passer?

I disagree with the Polian Plan. Build a team, don’t fill in the gaps as you go along. Good draft analysis though. I’m sticking with trade down, get Spoon and get back into 2nd round for DE. Then Boston center and TE in round 3.

So exciting though, draft time is here!

Does Dez Bryant really have a history of problems? Perrish Cox does sure… but Dez Bryant? Reggie Bush was taken 2nd in the draft was debated as the #1 overall pick and he just settled with Lloyd Lake whom he TOOK MONEY FROM IN COLLEGE! Dez Bryant lied about having a conversation with Deion Sanders and he forgot his “good cleats” Not to mention he’s a long way from the ball. It took Roddy White several years to understand what it took to be a #1 NFL receiver. It will probably take Dez Bryant that time too but character concerns? Not so much really.

DOL. Well u have managed to pull another pick out of your …. With all due respect your mock draftness. Just kidding DOL.I think an elite TE is a better pick than a center in rd 1, at least. And it’s an interesting pick. I could see Mike M using some 2 TE sets and using Jermaine to go vertical on some routes, but the bad thing about this pick, beside it not helping at a critical need (OLB), is it probably would move Tony G out after this yr and I don’t think he’s ready to go nor do I think he should go. We could only afford these highly paid TE for one yr and since Tony G contract is up after this yr that would mean he is th odd man out. Gonzalez wants to win a super bowl and I think he has 2 or maybe even 3 yrs left but if we pay top dollar to Jermaine we won’t be able to keep both. Whereas if we take a TE in the 4th or 5th rd that could be groomed for the future, we could keep Tony G around. Let’s don’t overthink the situation DOL, just take Spoon or Graham and if they are both gone then let’s trade down.

DOL, the latest word is that Rolando McClain does not have Crohn’s disease. He recently went through a battery of medical exams that showed no signs of Crohn’s. Since Crohn’s is not curable, it appears that he was misdiagnosed several years ago. I had wondered how he could have had Crohn’s and never missed a practice or game in 3 years at Alabama, because when people with Crohn’s have a flare up it can be pretty debilitating: severe inflammation and joint pain, weight loss, blood loss, going to the bathroom all the time, etc.

It’s possible that McClain has IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), which can have some of the symptoms of Crohn’s, which along with Ulcerative Colitis is under the category of IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease). IBS is much less serious than IBD.

McClain’s recent medical tests have been sent out to all NFL teams and it doesn’t appear that his health is a concern.

I think this Spoon dude is just another Gholston that was a bust for the Jets. The defense will be better by just getting last year’s players back. My prediction is that Atkins drafted out of the U, will become what we are all looking for in a linebacker and will be 2010’s breakout young star. TD should just draft all stud O linemen and run the damn ball.

I don’t expect Brandon Graham will be on the board at 19, so it’s either Spoony or Gresham. Either would make good sense, but I wonder if TD will be gun shy on pulling the trigger on Gresham with the health concerns. Baker (rd 1), Jerry (rd 1) and Moore (rd 2) picks with injury histories in college and injuries in the pros, it would take a lot of guts to take that risk again.
If the Falcons could be certain to trade down and still get Weaterspoon (with a willing trade partner) it would make better sense to me. Glad I’m not the one who will be second guessed after this draft.

Speculation I have from all the blogs lately are the we are dismissing the players ability we already have with a draft pick that in know way can help this year.

Here is 1st, 2nd and 3rd year players we have? Has everyone forgotten?

No one other than a WR or RB will help this year.
DL-
Kroy Biermann 3rd year
Peria Jerry 2nd year
Thomas Johnson 3rd year
Trey Lewis 3rd year
Maurice Lucas 2nd year
Vance Walker 2nd year

Now look at our RB’s and WR’s
WR-
Troy Bergeron 2nd year
Harry Douglas 3rd year
Brain Finneran 10th year
Micheal Jenkins 7th year
Andy Strickland- 2nd year
Eric Weems 3rd year
Roddy White 6th year

RB-
Olvie Mughelli- 8th year
Jerios Norwood- 5th year
Antone Smith- 2nd year
Jason Snelling 4th year
Micheal Turner 7th year

Plenty of youth on D, and not enough on O, We need to spend that pick on an impact player for a RB or WR. The list above proves my theory.

LB-
Spencer Adkins Rookie from Miami
Robert James 2nd year from Arizona State
Curtis Lofton 3rd year
Stephen Nicholas 4th year

OL-
Sam Baker entering 3rd year
Justin Blalock 3rd year
Ron Bruggerman Rookie from Iowa
Tyson Clabo- 5th year
Harvey Dahl- 5th year
Garrett Reynolds 2nd year
Blake Sclueter 2nd year
Jose Valdez 2nd year

D-Led, how many times has Thomas Dimitroff said he conducts a “needs-based” draft. What part of “need” does Jermaine Gresham fill out? Please answer me that……

Mularkey does not even like tight ends that much (although that was his position in his playing days). If Falcons were the Colts, Jets, Chargers, Vikings – teams that are more complete – then I would be all for taking a player like Gresham and groom him – but Falcons have gaping holes in their defensive right now that need to be plugged. Grabbing Gresham would not be “needs based” – outside of QB, Tight End is probably our smallest need right now.

My abve post got jumbled out of order for some reason-
But here is my hopes.

19th pick- WR or RB, we trade Micheal Jenkins to NE or Philly for a second rounder or third rounder. Both teams need WR help too.

2nd thru 6 th round we draft OL, DL, and LB not in that order.

Whew glad I could help.

After last years draft in which top 2 picks were non factors after injuries, I do not believe that the Falcons will draft anyone with medical questions. Gresham has a history of knee injuries going back to high school. The falcons are not going t draft a back-up tight end in the first round. I think they will try to get an impact defensive player, but are in a position to take “best athlete available”.

IF the Falcons take Gresham, they would have used this year’s first and second rounder on a tight end. Also, another player with injury questions. After last year, there is no way that Dimitrov does that. They should trade down if Graham or Spoon are not availble.

It appears Morgan Burnett is headed for the 1st round as well now. Dallas has a man-crush on him. I believe Dwyer slips to the 2nd round. If all of this holds true, it appears GT will have 3 1st rounders and 1 2nd rounder. GT players will be off the board before a single UGA player is picked. So much for all of those STAR rankings that the recruiting services hand out.

The last time I checked we play in the same div. as the world champs. We cannot outscore the Saints. We have to build the defense up and try to slow them down. If our 1st pick is not a def. player I will be pissed. Another thing we need to sign D.Sharper. The guy is a baller and he knows D.Brees having spent a year there.Sharper and DeCoud would give us two ballhawking safeties. I want Graham, Morgan, Weatherspoon.

Orlando, orlando, orlando. Pulease.

1) You copied and pasted the second paragraph that starts with “Bill Polian.” At least correct the font size so it’s not so obvious you plagarized.

2) “Dimitroff said in a radio interview that it would cost about $8 million jump to move from 19 to the low teens.” Um, genius, the 19th pick IS THE LOW TEENS!!!!! 13 and 14 are the HIGH TEENS!!!

3) Give it up on Pouncey at 19. I’ll give you 100 to 1 odds if you’re confident enough. C’mon – your $10 will get my $1,000 if you’ve got the balls to back up your repeated blabbering.

(IT’S FROM MY OWN PRINT ARTICLE. WE CALL THAT RE-PURPOSING. GET THAT RIGHT BEFORE YOU TRY TO CALL SOMEONE OUT. At 4 a.m. high/low teens, whatever. Betting is illegal. —DOL)

The Falcons only have two real choices here and Pouncey, Gresham, and Graham are not in the conversation. Graham and Pouncey will probably be gone (trading up for either is an expensive waste that can not be afforded).

The choice will be between ‘Spoon and Jerry Hughes. So you decide do you want Hughes- a potential great blitzing LB who will need to learn to cover- or Spoon- a great cover LB who will need to improve his pass rush skills. Any other suggestions at 19 are pointless.
