Florida defensive end/linebacker Jermaine Cunningham, of Stephenson High, had a fine showing at his pro day workout last week before suffering a first degree quadriceps strain.

Here are the vitals:

  • Nine feet, 10.5 inches in the broad jump.
  • Thirty-five inches vertical jump.
  • The Stephenson High product ran a 1.57 seconds in the 10 yard split, which is a super time.
  • He ran a 4.92 seconds in the 40-yard dash, suffering the strain while running.
  • After pulling the quad, he didn’t run the cone drill.
  • Cunning did well in the linebacker drills and defensive end drills as he fought through the quad injury.

A total of 20 teams were on hand for his workout. Some of the teams included Miami, Minnesota, New York Jets, Baltimore, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Kansas City, New York Giants, Detroit, Green Bay, New Orleans, Tampa Bay and St. Louis.

The Cardinals didn’t make it, but asked for film.

The workout was key for Cunningham, who had recovered from shoulder surgery that forced him to miss the Senior Bowl and working out at the NFL scouting combine.

Cunningham had surgery on Jan. 5. Dr. James Andrews did the surgery and projected a full recovery.

Cunningham is 6-foot-3 3/8 and 266 pounds. Some teams consider him a defensive end and others like him as an outside linebacker.

Cunningham has a visit set up with the St. Louis Rams.

At Florida, Cunningham had 34 tackles for loss, 19.5 sacks, seven pass deflections, five forced fumbles, one interception and a fumble recovery.

3-4 linebacker. We don’t need him.

So are the Falcons looking at him or is this random info on a guy who went to high school somewhere in the state of Georgia? Not familiar with Stephenson high school.

Only smart to check out everyone at your positions of need, but Cunningham is WAAAY down the list of guys we’re interested in…not much explosiveness demonstrated in his broad jump, although his 10yd numbers belie that. The injuries are a concern, though. Bottom line: there are much better players on our radar at DE/OLB.
DOL– have you spoken with Todd Weiner since the retirement announcement? He’s been such an inspirational example of hard work and self-sacrifice the last few seasons playing hurt all the time but never quitting. I, for one, see his departure as a major loss in the training/locker room not to mention the quality depth he provided with Baker’s injuries. Yet more evidence that we’ll be looking for (I believe) 3 more guys on the OL. It’ll take the draftees awhile to acclimate so this is the time to reload in the trenches with an eye toward probably losing some starters in 2011. God bless you Todd for your example on and off the field!

Big Ray — Stephenson is a local school in Stone Mountain. We have to keep track of the locals.

Waynester — See above. Yes, I’ve spoke with Todd several times. Seen him airports. (He still goes to the games). Also, had to the pleasure of judging the Falcons Taco Mac Insider contest with him a couple of weeks ago. He was a consummate professional.

If the Falcons are considering Witherspoon, looks like they must also consider this player also. Sounds like a beast of a OLB.

Where are the experts projecting Cunningham to go?

O’Brien and Jamaaliver — His folks kept saying second round. Pro Football Weekly has him rated as a “mid-round pick.” that’s 4-5-6. NFLDraftScout.com has a second/third round grade on him.
