Atlanta Falcons to workout Everson Griffen, Brian Price

BIRDLAND – In their quest to improve the defense, the Falcons are set to workout a couple of West Coast prospects.

Gil Brandt, the Cowboys former pro personnel man wrote in his blog on NFL.com, that the Falcons are set to workout UCLA defensive tackle Brian Price and USC defensive end Everson Griffen on Saturday.

Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon is due in for a visit today and Thursday, but he was stuck in Memphis Tuesday night due to airplane issues.

The Falcons are showing some significant interest in a pair of standouts from Los Angeles. Atlanta GM Thomas Dimitroff, head coach Mike Smith, defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder and defensive line coach Ray Hamilton will work out UCLA DT Brian Price and USC DE Everson Griffen on Saturday morning.

Defensive line is a need area for the Falcons, and they are one of the most active teams in the pre-draft workout circuit. Price and Griffen are generally considerd late first-to-early second round picks.

Griffen, 6-foot-3 and 273 pounds, is the third rated defensive end in the draft by NFLDraftScout.Com behind Georgia

Everson Griffen could be flexing for the Falcons in 2010. (Associated Press)

Tech’s Derrick Morgan and Florida’s Carlos Dunlap.

However, most have Michigan’s Brandon Graham and South Florida’s Jason Pierre-Paul rated ahead of Griffen.

The knock of Griffen is that he plays undisciplined at times and is prone to freelance.

Price is the fifth rated defensive tackle behind Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh, Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy, Tennessee’s Dan Williams and Penn State’s Jared Odrick by NFLDraftScout.com.

Price is 6-2, 300 and his godfather is former NBA veteran Brian Shaw, who played 15 years in the league. Price showed flashes for the Bruins, but also had to come out when he got winded.

He bench pressed 225 pounds, 34 times.

Aaron Wilson of the NationalFootballPost.com is reporting — via a source close to the program (Arizona’s?)  — that the Falcons worked out another Pac 10 player on Tuesday in Arizona linebacker Vuna Tuihalamaka.

Tuihalamaka, is 6-1/2, 230 pounds. He  played middle linebacker for the Wildcats and was voted all-Pac-10 by the league’s coaches. He wasn’t invited to the NFL scouting combine, but is climbing onto some draft boards. He ran a 4.72 on his pro day in March.

Last season, Tuihalamaka had 68 tackles, 5.5 for losses, one interception, three pass breakups and one forced fumble.

Under Dimitroff there is a perception that the Falcons like West Coast players from the Pac-10. But here’s a conference breakdown of his 19 picks: Pac-10 (four), ACC (four), SEC (four), Big 12 (two) Big East (1), WAC (one), Big Sky (one), Atlantic 10 (one) and Southern Conference (one).  The Falcons have not selected a player from the mighty Big 10 under Dimitroff.

Do you think Griffen or Price are worthy of the 19th pick in the draft? What about this Tuihalamaka kid? He looks like a late rounder?

Meh … Can’t say I’d be terribly excited about either of those guys … not at the 19th pick. I guess they’d be OK if we traded back later in the 1st round in order to get a 2nd round pick this year or 1st round pick next year.

Yeah, how come there are no mock drafts where the Falcons trade up with NE in the second round? What should we give up? A fourth and sixth pick or one of our extra thirds?

With all of the scouting of potential 2nd round talent, do you think the falcons have a plan B to trade back and pick up 2nd round pick in the process if their top 2 or 3 choices are taken by their 19th pick?

JP, if the Falcons trade into the second round, they’ll have to give up a 1st next year or every pick this year (except comp picks). A fourth and sixth may get a high fourth or low third, but not a mid second.

I think the best scenario for a second round pick is to trade players for it. Norwood (plus others) may get a 2nd, but there has to be a need from the other teams. If he was bundled with a 6th, NE may bite and take it.

Infamous, mountain_jim, Blue Fender — I think they are trying pretty hard to get into the second round somehow, while maintaining the 19th pick. The problem with New England is that they are trying to rebuild their defense. This is a defensive rich draft and Grandmaster Belichick will want to keep those picks he stock piled.

FalconsFan284 — Congrats for being out front on Griffen.

With the picks that we currently have, the only way that we could get into the 2nd round AND keep our 19th pick is to trade a player and picks. Would anyone actually be interested in JA? Does scouting for these positions hint at a player who may be traded near or on draft day?

My question to TD: Did the coaching staff believe that giving up so many big plays (20+ yards) and being ranked near the bottom for pass defense was attributed more towards QBs passing quickly (not allowing coverage sacks) or QBs having all day to throw (no pass rush)?

Pass that one along DOL.Thanks.!!

Trade Abraham for a second round pick. He’s good early in the season, but disappears after mid-season. Get a young guy through the draft that can play every play and one who has that “fire” required to be a good pass rusher.

1st Round has to be LB or DE. I like Griffen seems to have a nasty streak and motor. I like Spoon or McClain, they could be as sexy as Clay Matthews was last season for Green Bay.

Not that I am suggesting we trade him but it seems as if the Falcons are really interested in Price and Spoon. I understand that some of this may be a smokescreen but the Falcons are doing a lot of work with guys that are projected lower in the first and into the second round. DOL, this isn’t draft related, but I am curious about how our team plans to use the 3 safeties: Coleman, DeCoud, and Moore. Right now, I would say DeCoud (due to age and play) has the one spot nailed down, but Coleman’s performance last year was shaky at times. I still think he holds the other spot but will they have Moore back up Strong and Free? I am pretty sure they planned on using his as an FS, but going forward that position appears locked up while Coleman is getting up there on years. So basically, if Moore cracks the starting line-up would they shift DeCoud to SS or shift Moore to SS.

All of this is contingent on William’s health and ability; I just think it is interesting given the surprising development with DeCoud. Hope this made sense.

D Led whatup? My question to TD would be, how assured are we that the existing players coming off injury will be healthy this season and should we be looking to sure up our DL even further?

Griffen would make sense, only if they think he fits their scheme and they feel they can coach him. It seems pretty clear they are looking at DE and OLB with the pick, and maybe the trip to look at Griffen was just to keep the focus on who they really DO like (Graham or ‘Spoon).

DOL, I think I posted the link to the Vuna Tuihalamaka story on D3’s blog last night.

TD questions:

If possible, understanding that TD doesn’t issue lists of players they hold private workouts with, could you ask him to review the list posted in your earlier blog regarding people they talked with, and comment on the accuracy, or any inaccuracies? One never knows when puling off reports from various parts of the web. It appears he is targeting WR, DT, LB, and C for most of his interviews.

Also, if there is any info on players coming in on the 12th for “local workouts.

One more procedural question (greedy, but if you dont ask you can’t get :-) )- Understanding that teams are allowed 30 private workouts excluding local players and their day, “are private meetings with players during school’s pro day events counted against the 30? Or is the 30 quota for flying players to the team complex?”

HeY DOL, I see your Hard at it for all us Falcons fans today. I asked you a month or so ago about trading a vet player and picks to get back into the 2nd rd while keeping our 19th pick, and you said it was all quiet on the western front. I am ecstatic to hear you say we are trying to get back in the 2nd rd somehow someway. It does make you wonder why we are working out Price and GRiffin. It doesnt seem practical to take another DT with our No.1 and only pick, with having taken Jerry last yr and committed a lot of money to BaBBS (yes i know about the probable suspension) unless we are looking at a DE/OLB in rd 1 and using a NO 2 on a DT like Price. Then I am down with it. Just wondering DOL: what kind of insight did you get last yr before the Tony G trade came down timewise I mean ? Griffen is a 2nd rounder at best; I think the Falcons are looking at options if Graham or Pouncey are not available at 19. Virtually no chance of trading into 2nd round, as that costs nearly all our picks or a 1st rounder in 2011. For a guy who believes in building through the draft, neither of those will happen.

Price would immediately be #3 in the DT rotation; the only way that makes sense, though, is if Anderson +/- a pick are traded for a pick to get into the 2nd round.

Stay away from Weatherspoon; seriously overhyped, looks rough on film…TD doesn’t take athletes, he takes football players (Adkins being an interesting exception to that rule, but that was a 6th rounder, not a first).

All the experts call him a “football player” first an foremost, and second a “leader.” Uh that sounds exactly like the kind of player TD likes. Also, I guess you didn’t watch him practice or play in the Senior Bowl, either. You know, that’s where all star, all american type players compete against each other. The overwhelming opinon was that Spoon excelled and stood out as a leader and a “football player.” Go back to the shallow end of the pool Greg.

I think the Falcon leadership is going in the right direction but to give them cart blanche with our team 100% of the time is incorrect. They make mistakes too. Remember our 1st & 2nd rounders hardly played last year. Maybe Alex Brown isn’t the right DE to go after or maybe we shouldn’t want Grady back, but free agency is a good time to get help with the pass rush. We get a good DE or DT and we get rid of our worst one. The one we get will be experienced and proven. Maybe they have a plan for FA later but I hope NO doesn’t get A Brown and we’re sorry about it.

NO let their DE with off field issues go, can’t remember his name, but i think the two of them to put up comparable #’s so i’t won’t make a huge difference for them. Jamaal Anderson will see his base salary increase by $2 million to $3.1625 million, and Mike Peterson will get a $600,000 raise to have a base salary of $3.1 million.

Peterson is entering the final deal of the two-year contract he signed with the Falcons last off-season. Anderson is signed through 2012, although the final year of his rookie deal is voidable.

I disagree with your “we wouldnt have a top 10 run Defense withouth JA98″ … I agree that Jamaal Anderson is solid against the run but he missed the last 3 games (when we made our push to that 10th spot vs run) …. Chauncey Davis can be solid against the run.

My point is Jamaal Anderson would not be missed…. Stopping the run is not the problem with or without JA98… We need a pass rush.

I agree that Jamaal Anderson is solid against the run… I disagree thats a reason to keep him because we got a guy who can step in and do that (Chauncey is also a better pass rusher.. He is not the answer tho).

DOL, do you think that it is possible for the Falcons to trade Norwood and a fourth/ fifth rounder to a team in need of a running back for a second round pick??? If that is the case then we could go Pouncy (C) with the first, Jerry Hughes/ Daryl Washington (OLB) from TCU in second (whichever is available), then go Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (CB) with third round pick, then with comp. pick go Brandon Lang (DE). Then in the fourth we could pick up Blair White at WR. Then in the fifth go Ciron Black (OG/OT) from LSU. Then in the sixth we should pick up Andrew Quarless (TE) and Andre Anderson (RB) in the sixth round.

I think this would be ideal, but whether or not we can get the second rounder, idk. Please ask TD about second round status, also if we throw in JA#98, that would please me as well.

Hughes would be good but not sure on Washington, heard he has a real bad problem shedding blocks. Personally would go with Bowman in the second. Looking like Pouncy would be gone by 19 but didn’t get a good review from Casserly if you value his opinion. I tend not to listen to those guys as they never played. This is why you cant miss on a top 10 pick….. It sets your franchise back atleast 4 or 5 years… Wasting those years hopeing they develop … If JA98 was an impact DE like we draft him to be… We would be damn near a complete team.

I’ve seen several mocks and out of most of them at least one of the following is there at 19 – Kindle, McClain, Spoon, Graham, and JPP. I think most of our fanbase would be happy with any of those with the exception of JPP. I just don’t know enough to be comfortable with him. No matter who we get Brees better watch out anyway. Its hard to be that team with the target on your back. We’ll see soon enough how the defending SB champs schedule looks, hopefully slap full of teams fresh off bye’s one after another.

Chris Taylor,

Agree. JPP may be the next Jevon Kearse wannabe, but I don’t want wannabes. We have one already.

D. Ledbetter ,

You didn’t tell us how things went with TD. But you did give us some Mel Kiper thoughts. Thanks for the info!

Are the Falcons really trying to get into the 2nd round? What might they try to accomplish this? Come on, give us something good, pleeeeease! :)

Big Ray — Got to write TD story for Sunday’s paper. Conversation went well. Got lots of questions in. Will be sharing over the next couple of days.

Me — The coaches like Norwood. I don’t expect him to be traded. You can teach speed.

Me — Also, they put a second round tender on him. That’s high.

CT — Not today. Up late transcribing it. Have a Sunday story on TD continuing to put his imprint on the franchise. Will share the rest over the next few days. We’ll talk again next Tuesday at Coach Smith’s golf outing.

DOL – looking forward to the story – did you have the chance to slip in the fan questions?

This is going to be the draft that TD proves he is the man…Falcons had a shot of plugging in a DE ready to play…and they let him sign with the Saints….*&%@##$

Griffin and Price are not worth the 19 pick. Griffin underachieved his first two years at USC and had a breakout junior year and decides to come out for the draft. His value was not going to be any higher than it is right now, he is immature and would be a reach at 19. Brice is better off in the later 1st round and maybe early second round. The Falcons need to get an impact player on the defensive side of the ball. Spoon would be that guy and you put him with Lofton, Nichalos, Peterson, not a bad LB core. Not too mention we can get the very athletic OLB Hughes/Washinton out of TCU in the third.

Given TD’s apparent interest in Jerry Hughes and Brian Price, might he be looking to trade down in the first round in order to get a 2nd round pick? For example, the Chargers have pick #28 and pick #40 in the second round. This would give TD a very good chance of taking Jerry Hughes as a linebacker, given his speed and athleticism, with pick #28; and, take Brian Price with #40. To make it near equivalent chart value, TD would have to put more in the pot – say pick #83. But I sure like WalterFootball’s #98 pick of Center/Guard J.D. Walton for the Falcons.
