Quarterback market drying up on Michael Vick

In the ramp up to the 2010 NFL draft, several teams have made some very interesting moves at the quarterback position.

None of the moves have involved Philadelphia’s Michael Vick, who appears relegated to being a third-string Wildcat quarterback for the Eagles again next season.

Who will Michael Vick play for during the 2010 season?

Vick expressed in two separate radio interviews that he wouldn’t mind playing for Carolina or St. Louis. Those two teams don’t appear interested.

The Panthers did release Jake Delhomme, but appear set to move on with Matt Moore at the helm.

The Rams are sitting at the top of the draft and are thought to be salivating over Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford.

In Seattle, the Seahawks traded for Charlie Whitehurst, of Clemson and Chattahoochee High, and signed him to a two-year, $10 million deal.

In Cleveland, the Browns dumped Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. They picked up Seneca Wallace and Delhomme. Anderson landed in Arizona and Quinn in Denver.

The Browns are set to workout four of five draft eligible quarterbacks, including Florida’s Tim Tebow. Cleveland president Mike Holmgren told Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the team would definitely draft a quarterback, but probably not in the early rounds of the draft.

In San Francisco, the 49ers landed David Carr.

Even backups Rex Grossman and Shaun Hill found  new employers in the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions.

Charlie Whitehurst has a future with the Seattle Seahawks.

Charlie Whitehurst has a future with the Seattle Seahawks.

Things have been eerily quiet in Buffalo as head coach Chan Gailey settles in. They have the ninth pick in the draft and could address their quarterback position by drafting Notre Dame’s Jimmy Clausen.

But for Vick, there have been no takers.

One theory is that teams might not be so willing to forgive him for his federal dogfighting conviction.

Another theory is that they can forgive him for the dogfighting, but not for admitting that he was a class room slacker when he played for the Atlanta Falcons.

One last theory is that Vick is  not polished enough as passer and the league has clearly shifted to being a passing league.

Tony Dungy, who’s been mentoring Vick, since he was released from Federal prison, is not overly concerned about his football career.

“Mike and I communicate regularly,” Dungy said last Thursday via phone. “We probably talk once a week. I’m really proud of him because he’s had a great year in terms of his personal life and family life.”

Dungy is not sure how the football side of Vick’s comeback is going to work out.

“I know that’s important to him, but more than anything he has put his family life back in order,” Dungy said. “I’m really proud of him for that.”

There are a couple of scenarios that could have Vick on the move. One is that teams might decide to make a move

shortly before of during the draft, which will be held April 22-24.

Also, some teams might wait until before the outset of the season to see if any injuries knock out their quarterbacks.

Tony Dungy

There also is the Minnesota situation. What happens if Brett Favre does decide to stay on his tractor this time?

But for now, it appears that teams are shying away from Vick and his desire to return to starter status in the NFL.

Why are teams shying away from Vick? Do you suspect the Eagles are holding him to drive up his trade value and will move him around the draft? Will he remain in Philadelphia in his Wildcat role? Would he be a good fit in Minnesota if Brett Favre doesn’t come back?

I hate to say it, but he blew his chance while in Atlanta. He was a complete slacker who never became a student of the game and he even admitted to “not trying as hard” after the Falcons were eliminated from the playoffs one year. He flipped off the fans, had the “water bottle issue” and became famously known as Ron Mexico. Top it off with lying to the owner and dog fighting and I can’t say I am shocked there is not a team after him. Karma?

Teams realize Vick is a very good athlete but not a very good quarterback. He’s not a team leader and can’t think on his feet without using them to run. A running QB has never been successful and I don’t think they ever will be in The Pros.

Where are all of the Vick fans, I think I remember from last year all of the smack talk about him being a starter in 2010, guess he’s used up all of his HAM. D*#n, where did that come from, hope he just goes away for the year.

Hmm… If I was a betting man my money would be on that he just isn’t any good. And that includes throwing and running. Sorry to all you Vick fans who cheer for him because of the color of his skin he just isn’t what he was, and one could argue even then he was not a good qb.

Vick not being a polished passer was an issue when he was here. We paid the man like he was Manning or Favre when he performed like David Carr. If he was anything more than a running back that can pass some, there would be 10 teams lined up to get him. Super talent negates baggage almost every time.

If Mike Vick could be seen as a starting QB in the NFL then almost any wrong that he may have committed would be forgotten. With that being said, he can not play in the league as a starter. IMHO he is a back-up at best. The man simply is NOT a starter any longer!!!

Michael should play a year or two in Canada, where he would surely be a starter, and polish his skills against lesser defenses. He’s still young enough that he could come back to the NFL in 2012 and give it another try. By then all of these retreads, has-beens and never-will-bees will have been cut again.

Why not focus on Matt ” The Gay Blade” Ryan instead of feeding the mouth breathers with another cheap shot at MV7??? He has been gone for three full season… I guess this goes to show what these ball Janglers think…The Falcons want to sell Matt Ryan, Why not try and do it without always Pissing on Vick? Maybe when Ryan actually wins the division or Heavan forbid a PLAYOFF game you can focus on the guys that are here . But until then lets focus on the guy that won the games that #2 can’t!!!

I usually don’t get involved in Vick bashing, but hey, I’ll do anything to blog football.

Vick…you should just be happy to be making the $$ that you will receive next year, given your circumstance. I can remember when MV7 started. He wore a suit, had a clean cut…had a PR rep that kept him in line. Somehow, the money and the fame changed him.

Jump to THIS year…he goes on some radio show and says that he would love to stick it to the Birds twice a year. Dude, the ONLY FANS YOU HAVE are in ATL. You should be begging to come back here and play DB and return punts for Arthur Blank. Instead, you STLL have not learned your lesson.

Vick will get his shot in Philly before its all said and done, and he will…still miss receivers running outs, and 15 yard stops (usually high). He will still have too many nagging injuries to really be effective by week 8 because he runs too much…he will still use the word “I” 3 times as much as he uses the word “WE”. Why? Because he just dosen’t get it…

Typical whinning Vick haters. Can’t you all see that the writer writes this trash just to get you all riled up. Here this, Vick will start somewhere in 2010 because he is just that good no matter what you haters think. The old pocket passer is dead and you haters can’t stand it. Vick’s the man, has broken numerous records in the NFL and will continue to. I can’t wait until he signs with his new team so that I can go out and buy what will once again be the top selling jersey. If for some reason he stays with Philadelphia, then Mcnabb had better get ready to ride the bench. Vick’s haters are limited to a few bloggers, hypocritical, aligator shoe wearing, mink coat wearing, leather belt wearing, meat eating animal lovers (yeah right, give me a break). The media just trys to make it look worst than it really is. Keep charging Vick, you do have fans who know what you can do and would rather watch you in a losing effort than any other QB in a winning effort.

I think i can see what FALCONSORRY is trying to say… his references to Arthur Blank are a merely a metaphor for the afflictions of an overly capitalistic society. He’s trying to warn us about the perilous dangers inherent with our own avarice, and he is channeling the irony in the whole Michael Vick situation as the springboard. You see, FALCONSORRY sees that Vick represents the potential within each one of us, and in turn represents our own uncontrollable subconcious desires to self sabotage based in turn on our own self loathing. Had the controlling powers of our society, represented in this parable by Arthur Blank, merely reached out a helping hand… no wait… whoops, my bad. FALCONSORRY is just a semi-illiterate a-hole who needs to ditch the #7 jersey and get hooked on phonics. Again, my apologies. Carry on…

The market for Vick won’t really develop until training camp. The Eagles know this and that’s why they signed that tender. They will keep him if they have too but they want to try and get something out of thier investment. Depending on what happens this summer he might get a shot and they could come out of it with something a pick or a player or both. It’s going to take a little time though.

There is no need to explore conspiracy theories here. The reason Vick will NEVER land a starting job in the NFL again is very simple – and anyone who can’t grasp this is a moron. First, it has nothing to do with his criminal past – look how many times other NFL teams were willing to give hoodlums like Pacman Jones, and others a second chance. If you CAN produce on the field – there is always a team that is willing to give you another shot – whether you are a criminal or just a major disruption (i.e. T.O.).

Here’s the sobering truth and I hope that all the Vick loyalist – will stop screaming for just a moment – and let this reality sink in: Mike Vick will never again be a starting QB in the NFL because…. HE CANNOT READ DEFENSES CORRECTLY AND HE CANNOT PASS THE BALL ACCURATELY….PERIOD!

Did we all forget the last few years Vick was here. There was major talk among many Falcon fans that what we should do is cut Vick and keep Matt Schaub. However, most of us were resolved that Vick would stay because Arthur Blank had jumped the gun – giving Vick a Trillion Dollar/Trillion Year Deal – so we were stuck. But the truth is – ALOT OF US WERE SICK OF VICK BEFORE THE DOGFIGHTING THING EVER HAPPENED – not because of his attitude – his lack of leadership – or his known relationships with thugs – but simply because – HE CANNOT READ DEFENSES CORRECTLY AND HE CANNOT PASS THE BALL ACCURATELY….PERIOD!

I know it sounds weird – but I am now extremely thankful the Falcons blew up a few years ago. It was the only way we could get Vick out of the drivers seat – and start rebuilding this team for the future!

I am tripping how all these so-called ‘football fans.’ They really are drinking the Matt Ryan kool-aid. No ACC titles or passing records before he was drafted, no playoff wins as a starter (unlike Vick in first year as a starter), no falcons passing records or efficiency rating, no rookie or sophmore of the year, no nothing.

What happens when you don’t have a bonafide running back to hand the ball off to 350 times in a season… Answer, see Matt Ryan. Unlike Ryan, Peyton and Brady can win with their arms. Until Ryan proves himself, he is just another thug that has stolen money from Authur Blank.

BTW, Vick was paid because he created a buzz that warranted a waiting list for season tickets, sold out the dome, put the falcons in primetime for TV money, and led the league in jersey sales. It had nothing to due with his passing accuracy. While I will not call Ryan gay, he damn sure is not the man.

Life is a circle. We all can agree that the QB is the unofficial ‘leader’ of the team. Early on, QB’s did it with their legs. It literally took an act of congress to implement passing in the game to reduce deaths and paralyzing injuries on the field.

As time progressed, football went to the drop back non-mobile gun slinger (Bradshaw/Marino). Then exotic defenses forced offenses to go to a QB that could move in the pocket (S.Young/Farve). Now my friends, freak of nature athletes (like Reggie White/Dwight Freeney) are forcing offenses the go to QBs that are good runners too (Vick/V.Young).

The goal of the team is to win. Whether you like or not, you have to change with the times or you will get left behind. Whether you like or not, Vick was and still is a QB. He may not fit our indivdual opinion of one which is fine. Troy Aikman, Steve Young, Joe Montana, Matt Ryan (lol) et al couldn’t do it… It was Michael “the dog-killer” Vick who led his team victory on the road at Green Bay, giving the Packers their first ever home loss in NFL history.

Who cares? Stop writing about Vick!

The league has moved in a different direction and Mike was never an accurate passer. He’ll be nothing more than a gimmick back up for a few more years until he eventually gets cut from a terrible team.

You can’t lie to a franchise, commit horrible crimes, and then admit you were incredibly lazy for the majority of your career and expect to be handed a starting job in a league that has passed you by. I’m thankful he did what he did. Our team is much better off without him, and hopefully the “fans” who were chanting “We want that piece of trash” will realize that when our Falcons go deep into the playoffs this year with a real QB.

They’ll be back on this bandwagon so fast, just like all of those ‘Aints fans this year.

1st Question Answer: absolutely nothing, totally agree. 2nd Question answer: Are you serious???

I am just pointing out Ryan should of been selected in 2nd or 3rd Rd. The Falcons/fans/media/city were so ready to put up an ‘image’ that was 180 degress opposite of Vick, they made a very poor choice in Ryan. But they did succeed at putting up a different ‘image.’

Ryan may prove to be a winner in the long run (i hope so). But Com’on son… these people need to stop hanging from his scrotum sack. My personal definition of a leader is as follows: One that does by example so well, that he finds himself out front… Ryan doesn’t fit that definition on the football field. I don’t care how clean he is off the field.

Interesting article but not overly relevant to the Falcons. Yes, I know Vick was a huge part of the Falcons history and had some ups and downs with the teams, but I don’t think a blog dealing with his potential suitors is necessary. I’d rather hear about something relevant to the team today then a former player that elicits such a strong reaction from fans.

All I'm Saying Is...

March 23rd, 2010
10:31 am

If I remember correctly, DOB had several questions for us to consider on this blog and none of them had anything to do with MV becoming a Falcon again or comparing him to Matty Ice so…to get back on topic….

1.) MV needs to quit talking publicly about what his aspirations are as he is still under contract with the Eagles. Every word he says makes him sound as if he’s ungrateful for the chance he has with Philly. The reason why a re-tread like Rex Grossman got picked up is because he is willing to be a back-up and not make any noise if he doesn’t win the job whereas MV keeps yapping publicly about wanting to be a starter.

2.) Re-treads like David Carr (who has done nothing), Shaun Hill (ditto) and Rex Grossman getting a job actually supports the notion that someone should invest in MV because we all know that, for example, the Bears made it to the Super Bowl in spite of Rex not because of him and that Grossman’s passing capabilities and accuracy were no better than MV.

3.) Of course Philly is waiting to see if interest percolates for MV and, if so, they’ll trade him for draft picks as McNabb is their starter and they have his successor waiting in the wings. MV was picked up simply to throw a curve at their competitors a role MV performed well.

4.) Farve will wait until mid-August be he will return to Minnesota. If for some strange reason he doesn’t, Childress already has a mobile and largely inaccurate QB on their roster who already knows the system (Jackson) so they will not pick up or trade for MV.

LET’S GO FALCONS!

Michael Vick is a PR nightmare. I applaud him for “righting” himself. Bad decisions have consequences
and he his paying the price. I don’t feel sorry for him because HE made the mistake. I do believe if he had been coached by say Dungy early in his career, he might have avoided this if word had “leaked” to Dungy. Very average NFL QB who would dazzle 3-4 times a game, but never would have won a super bowl. To erratic.

“…nobody struck fear in my heart like Mike Vick did in his prime. ” He struck that same fear in all opposing teams. That is why he was(is) such an enigma. But these PETA pushing Christians who don’t know the first thing about forgiveness have no idea what an impact he made to the NFL.

The definition of stupid is consciously making a decision that one knows will have adverse effects. Nope, that’s not me.

But let’s tak about another definition, ignorance… speaking about things that above one’s comprehension level. Obviously, Reggie White was one of the first of what we see today as the prototype DE today. Because of your ignorance, you couldn’t comprehend and understand the poste from contextual clues. Also, Vick was the first prototype (of the QB of tomorrow) to be allowed do what he does, run! V. Young is the next generation of that (what happened to the great passing and leadership of Matt Lienart).

In less than 10 year my ignorant friend, most NFL teams will have these type QB’s with just a little more accuracy in the passing game. Now that you have been schooled, you may speak now.

Liam, your an idiot. Comparing Mike Vick and Matt Ryan in terms of displaying the capabilities of a leader, is a stupid argument. The only statistic he ever put up in the NFL that may be a record is the season he RUSHED for 1000 yards…. So VY and Vick are the next generation of Quarterbacks??? Arthur Blank needs to bring Vick back for a backup—Ryan gets hurt all the time and is too slow to run the wildcat. But, it will take a ton of money to get Vick back, since he’s still mad at the way the Falcons treated him before. Blank better offer at least $5 mil per year plus incentives to get the deal done.

@Liam

I have been reading your posts and for the most part they are quite laughable and lack a TON of credibility. You “claim” alot of things, yet you state no facts just alot of hearsay. You honestly come off as some drunk fan crying from the cheap seats that states his opinions based on emotion and not facts. That much is obvious.

So Michael Vick is a good/great QB you say? How? Why? Any factual, statistical proof? What has he won?

Michael Vick lead the Falcons to “TWO” winning seasons out of “SIX”. Is that good? Is that great? Please explain to me how that is good/great Liam? Ohhhhhhhhh right, you wanna come at me with the usual Vick supporter excuse that he didn’t have a good supporting cast right? Typical. This is a common practice for Vick worshippers. Place the blame on anyone else BUT Vick. Hmmmm well last time i checked Warrick Dunn and T.J Duckett formed “one” of the best RB combo’s during the time they played together in ATL and while Vick was a Falcon. Defo wasn’t the running game. Perhaps it was the TE? Crumpler was Vick’s security blanket and was in the middle of his prime when he was in ATL. Crumpler did nothing but produce and catch balls “when they weren’t 10 feet over his head”. Wide Recievers? How is it that Roddy White became one of the best WR’s in the game after Vick left? It had to be the offensive line then right Liam? in a word. NO! The O.Line was one of the best in the league when Vick played in ATL. Again, stats and facts do not lie.

Michael Vick has 72 “career” passing TD’s. Yet, he also has 52 interceptions. Yes i said “FIFTY TWO!” Please explain to me how that is good/great Liam? That is downright HORRIBLE! But, his strong suit was running the ball not throwing right? Ok, well ummmm he ran for 23 Rushing TD’s BUT, fumbled the ball 55 times. FIFTY FIVE TIMES!! That is down right embarrassing. Please for the love of god explain to me how on earth that is remotely close to being good/great?

Shall i go on? I mean, i can keep coming at you with facts and stats all day long while you keep spewing the same ole hearsay/wordofmouth garbage. Are you or ANY Vick fans willing to contribute anything concrete, factual or intelligent as to why Michael Vick should be regarded as a good/great QB? Stats? Factual Points? Anything?? And i don’t wanna hear ” Because he’s the Bomb on my XBOX360″ OR ” He was/is the best rushing QB of all time” ( Actually Randall Cunnigham is and the stats are there to prove it ). Anything at all?

1. I think teams shy away from he because of his past. He has also gone public about not being a hard worker. Who wants to have someone like that on your team. How do they know that he will be doing his best for the organization.
2. I think that is why the Eagles are holding onto him. They are using him like stock. If he shows signs of getting better, than they will use it to get a better trade value. The NFL is still a business.
3. He will remain in his Wildcat role, because that is what he know best.
4. The Vikings would not be a good fit for him because he does not have a great arm.

Look, unfortunately superior talent and skills on the football field overshadow a mans baggage and morals and what he does off the field in todays NFL. Saying that, its obvious that teams just aren’t interested in Michael Vick because the game has quit simply passed him by. He lost his Deion like speed and quickness during his hiatus and became ordinary in the process. Otherwise, he is a Quarterback that is “well known” around coaching circles in the NFL for not being able to read defenses and was never accurate to begin with. Therefore, game over.

I had a casual, 2-hour talk with George Gervin at a Starbuck’s a couple of years ago. He was proud of his long career full of great accomplishments and seemed to love discussing the old days. Similarly, I picture being in some Starbuck’s or airport bar in fifteen years and finding myself next to Michael Vick. He too will be more humble, balding, just a regular guy. I will tell him I am a big Falcons and loved watching him play. Unlike Gervin, though, who referred to himself as an “NBA legend,” Vick will shake his head and talk about what a waste he made of his once-in-a-lifetime talent, how it ended so fast, but how he is running a football camp now or a sporting goods store and doing okay.

If Vick is so good then why is he just a 3rd string QB ? Why do teams that can’t even win 5 games like the Rams, Browns, Bucs, want him ?

The answer is quite obvious. Vick is not a god QB.

Great Quarterbacks are ultimately measured by the win-loss colum, and Vick led the Atlanta Falcons to TWO winning Seasons out of SIX…FACT.

His highest single-season completion percentage was 56.4 percent, and for his career he has thrown 71 touchdowns to 52 interceptions—not exactly the model of efficiency.

The classic argument for Vick is that he is not a good passer but his strength is running outside of the pocket and using his speed, explosiveness, etc…I get it. It was fun to watch sometimes, and if they gave out trophies for “most fun to watch” he probably would have won his fair share. But this is the NFL not some bush league that hands out ribbons.

The best rushing season of his career was the ‘06-’07 season, with 1,039 yards rushing, averaging almost 65 yards a game. Pretty impressive except for the fact that he guided his team to a not-so-impressive 7-9 record tat same season. He’s also put the ball on the ground 55 times in his career, more than one out of every 10 times he carried the ball.

I believe ultimately Michael Vick was a “single-threat” quarterback disguised as a “dual-threat.” Once teams realized that if you could get an early lead on the Falcons, they could never climb out of the hole because Vick couldn’t carry the team down the field with his arm.

He could run all over the field, but everyone knows running the ball when you’re already down a couple touchdowns is not how you win football games. Shall i go on?

I think the best chance Vick has at a starting job is Buffalo.

The fans there would welcome him with open arms because they are desperate for a winning team and the last time Chan Gailey was a head coach he did prefer a mobile QB.

Another reason I think this is possible is because Gailey stuck with the same QB for 4 years… who can forget the great Reggie Ball? Just ask Tech fans because I know they ALL have tried… very hard.

However Gailey didn’t seem to do so well with the developing the QB part of being a coach. Maybe he’ll do better if he has Vick but if they don’t improve the o-line up there it’s not going to matter because Vick will be running for his life after the ball is snapped like he did here… except he will be older, most likely slower, and have to play in the snow which will slow him down even more.

The only option I really see for him to start is Buffalo but it’s not really a good place for him if he wants to win… no o-line… no offense… and lots of weather.

And that division isn’t exactly full of cupcakes either.

Here are some Vick statistics in some very important categories as a QB in the NFL in his 4 years as a “STARTER”.

2002
18th in passer rating in 81.6
25th in comp percentage 54.9

2004
21st in passer rating 78.1
27th in completion percentage 56.4

2005
25th in passer rating 73.1
29th in completion percentage 55.3

2006
20th in passer rating 75.7
31st in completion percentage 52.6

An average of ranking 21st in the league in passer rating with an average of 77.1
An average ranking of 28th in the league in comp percentage with an average of 54.8.
A rank no higher than 18th in either category in any year as a starter.

Now how can someone with below average numbers like that EVER have been considered a good Quarterback? He can’t. He is a overhyped, overrated QB with no accuracy or consistentcy at all. A one dimensional player that the game has caught up too and has been exposed as that his entire career.

Vick’s “unique” skill set at the QB postion makes it impossible for him to be an effective second string QB. To take advantages of his skills (and mask his failings) the offense needs to be designed around him for it to be effective. This is just not possible when being in a backup role unless you have a starter with comparale skills. So, unfortunatlly fof him it appears he is a strter or nothing. You could pick him up as 3rd string QB (3rd string QB’s are almost always ‘projects’). However, his price tag is just too high for a 3rd stringer. So a team needs to decide if all the extra baggage and cash is worth investing in him as a starter.

What are you doing man? Soothing your White readers? If you had a clue about sports, you’d know that Vick was unanimously voted by his team for the Courage award. An award each team in the league votes on to choose a teammate worthy. Secondly, Vicks’ option was picked up by the team (Eagles) to receive the 5.5 mil in money. Agreed that Buffalo would be “one” of the places he has left to go as a “starter”. Although he would still have to beat out the other two QB’s there which is not a certainty to say the least. I can almost guarantee that he will not go there. Michael Vick will never ever play there due too the weather. Plain and simple. Aint gonna happen. Michael Vick is Michael Vicks biggest fan and he knows he would never be able to showcase his attributes as a player in Buffalo due to the weather. Trust me on this. Next possible spot would be St. Louis, and the fans their need to understand a few things. I’m sure the fans that know anything about football already know what i’m about to say.

Here are some flaws in Vicks game that bringing him to the Rams or anyone else for that matter would be a huge mistake.

1 – Vick hasn’t started a game since the 16th game of the 2006 season. That will make it 3 1/2 years between starts if he’s the week 1 starter for the Rams in 2010. I don’t know many QB’s who can go that long between starts and come back to be an effective player.

2 – Vick has just 4 full seasons as a NFL starter under his belt: 2002,2004,2005 and 2006. He only started 2 games his rookie year in 2001, he missed all but 5 games in 2003 because of injurty, he was in prison for 2007 and 2008 and Vick threw all of 13 passes for the Eagles during the 2009 season.

3 – Here are his QB ratings in the four years he was a full-time starter:

2002 – 81.6 ( 18th in the NFL )
2004 – 78.1 ( 20th in the NFL )
2005 – 73.1 ( 25th in the NFL )
2006 – 75.7 ( 20th in the NFL )

4 – Here are Vick’s completions percentages in those same four seasons:

2002 – 54.9% ( 25th in the NFL )
2004 – 56.4% ) 27th in the NFL )
2005 – 55.3% ( 29th in the NFL )
2006 – 52.6% ( 31st in the NFL )

That is staggeringly bad.

5 – Here are Vick’s touchdown totals in those years ( passing AND rushing combined ) ” seeing Vick supporters rely on his rushing stats so heavily ”

2002 – 24 ( 7 QB’s had more passing TD’s than Vick had combined TD’s )
2004 – 17 ( 20 QB’s had more passing TD’s than Vick had combined TD’s )
2005 – 21 ( 9 QB’s had more passing TD’s than Vick had combined TD’s )
2006 – 22 ( 8 QB’s had more passing TD’s than Vick had combined TD’s )

6 – Here are Vick’s yardage total in those years ( passing AND rushing combined )

2002 – 3,713 ( 10 QB’s passed for more yards than Vick had combined yards )
2004 – 3,215 ( 11 QB’s passed for more yards than Vick had combined yards )
2005 – 3,009 ( 14 QB’s passed for more yards than Vick had combined yards )
2006 – 3,513 ( 11 QB’s passed for more yards than Vick had combined yards )

The common excuse or argument made by Michael Vick’s supporters is that his rushing yards/stats make up for his poor completion percentage and lack of raw passing yards but, as you can see by the stats in 5- and 6- it clearly demonstrates that argument is incorrect :)

Michael Vick is a below average passer whose touchdown and yardage production as a full time starter has been middle-of-the-pack AT BEST. Is a middle-of-the-pack producer who is clearly a one dimensional player and hasn’t started a game in nearly 4 years worth all that trouble he brings? In a word. No.

In all honesty, Vick hasn’t been much better on the whole of his career than Bulger has been the last 3 years.

Bulgers QB rating over the last 3 years is about 70.8 – Vick’s career rating is 75.9. Think about that for a minute. Vick’s career average is barley better than Bulger’s three worst seasons. This sinking in yet people??

Bulgers average yards passing per game the last three seasons is 181.2. Vick’s average total yards passing and rushing combined during his 6 season in Atlanta was 207.6. Again, thats Bulger’s total for the LAST THREE SEASONS only. Even his worst years he’s only averaging 25.6 passing yards per game less than Vick gets passing and rushing combined. Remarkable, wouldn’t you say?

Bulger at his worst was damn near Vick’s equal in terms of QB rating.

Bulger at his worst threw for nearly as many yards per game as Vick accumulated both rushing and passing.

Bulger, the slow footed pocket passer, is sacked at roughly the same rate as the Ultra-Athletic stud muffin Vick. Bulger average of 34.5 times per season to Vick’s 39.5 times per season in his 4 years as a starter.

Good QB? HOW?!? Prove me wrong, im begging any Vick supporter/worshiper. I’m still waiting for a knowledgeable Michael Vick supporter to post anything at all credible, factual or statistical that “proves” me otherwise.

Vick^Average^At^Best,

Yes Vick would still need to beat out the other QB’s but if the Bills traded for him I think they would be under pressure to start him… which is a possible reason they wouldn’t pick him up.

St Louis is a possibility but since they have the #1 pick they’re not going to even thinking about touching Vick until after the draft.

Let’s be honest here. Other than 6 gimmick plays Vick didn’t really do anything memorable while he was in Philly so you’re selling fans on his potential and memories of what he was…

If you’re selling fans on potential then you can do that with a #1 draft pick that also comes with much less baggage… but would also cost you more based on how much the #1 draft pick gets paid.

Personally, I think Buffallo is a better option for him to start because of their fan base and head coach. I agree that Vick would probably not want to go there but if he wants to get paid like a starter then he doesn’t really have many other options. Also, since he’s not a free agent he doesn’t really get to choose where the Eagles trade him.

And one thing to remember is that he’s still in massive debt, (last I checked he owes more than 5 million), and needs to make as much money as possible to pay it back.

Vick has a winning record as a starter. Thats what matters. And for you people to say that Roddy got better when Vick left, you people wasn’t saying that when Roddy was dropping WIDE OPEN PASSES WHILE HE WAS BY HIMSELF. @ Vick Supporter

Stats mean nothing? Just clarifies what you know about the game of football and how it works my friend. You just lost all credibility with that comment. Give your head a shake bud. If stats mean nothing, please throw away the 1000 yard rushing season he had that you people desperately hang on too. Like Hollywould said, you cant have it both ways.

Year after year, Vick spent the seasons hurt or posting mediocre numbers that fall more in line with Aaron Brooks rather than Donovan McNabb. And yet, each offseason, “supporters” continue to predict big things for Vick, praising his revolutionary style and making excuses as to why he hasn’t been successful yet and why this will be the year. First it was the natural development of the QB–it takes a quarterback about three seasons before things officially lock in. Then it was the ineptitude of his receivers–yet the Falcons have always had a serviceable group that includes stand-out tight end Alge Crumpler, Roddy White, Jenkins ect.. Next was the adjustment Vick had to make to Jim Mora Jr.’s West Coast offense, which would need another couple of years or development. Now it’s Year ??? I have lost count now due to all the excuses. Its laughable. It’s time for you fans/supporters to wake up and realize that Vick was and is just no good. He’s got the same problems he has ALWAYS had, inconsistency, poor decision-making skills, rocketing passes instead of putting the “touch” and placement on a ball necessary for a receiver to catch it. The list goes on and on.

Look, before he was drafted Kyle Boller threw a football through the uprights from the 50-yard line, from his knees. That’s certainly athletically impressive, but no one’s confusing Boller for Marino. Yet Vick escaped his supporters ire by the aforementioned “revolutionary” style of play, which equates to nothing more than bailing out of a play at the first sign of resistance and taking off into the open field. On passing plays Vick ignores his receivers, looks to Crumpler as his first option, and takes off if he’s being covered. This style of play ensures two things:

1 – No team that Vick plays for will ever win a championship until Vick learns to pass.
2 – INJURY PRONE!

Vick’s best season came in 2002, when he threw for 2,936 yards and ran for another 777 with 24 combined TD’s (16 pass, 8 rush) and 8 INT. He’s never topped 3,000 passing yards in a season.

The most common defense I’ve heard of Vick is that it isn’t about his passing numbers–it’s about the adjustments he forces a defense to make and his multi-faceted skill set. I’m not sure about multi-faceted, as running seems to be his only true skill, and defenses–good defenses, at least–seem to have no problem figuring out how to play Vick. In the playoffs, where the victories count, you’ll find that every team has at least an above-average defense and most are stellar. They aren’t fooled by Vick, know he can’t pass, and usually throw a spy on him to make sure his run attempts and yards are kept to a minimum.

The other defense I hear regarding Vick is that his stats are inconsequential because his record as a starter speaks for itself. If you take a closer look. it isn’t as impressive. Vick’s 34-26-1 career record as a “starter” loses its luster when you break it down–he’s 24-6 against teams that were .500 or lower at the time the Falcons played them. Against teams with winning records he’s 7-13-1. This goes to show that Vick takes advantage of beating up on bad teams but can’t stand up to stiffer competition.

Besides, many average QBs have had great success in the wins column, because a quarterback does not a team make. A true barometer for a team’s talent is on their lines–a good rushing attack and rush defense can mask a lot of deficiencies elsewhere, and the Falcons had both while Vick was there. This is the same formula that got Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer Super Bowl rings in recent years. Where is Vicks ring? The difference is that those two quarterbacks were “game managers,” meaning they made the requisite minimum of plays to put their teams in a position to win without turning the ball over or making bad decisions–two things Vick has struggled with. Truth is, we’ve seen just about all Michael Vick has to offer, and it’s not spectacular. At this point in his career it’s pointless to try to convert him to a pocket passer. You cant teach an old dog new tricks.

The real winner in all of this Vick hoopla is the San Diego Chargers, who were in position to draft him before trading down with the Falcons, in the process acquiring All-Everything running back, worldly talent LaDainian Tomlinson, who was consistently at the top of the NFL’s running back pile while Vick sits in the middle of his pack.

Ledbetter its funny how you so called journalist like to add your opinions (your so-called three theories) as if these were established facts. The truth is you or no one else knows what teams are talking to Vick’s agent. Last year after he was released from prison all of you SILLY sports writer had a “death watch” list on Vick and were marking off teams that were not going to touch him for these SAME THREE THEORIES and whammo he lands in Philly (a team by the way had been on no-way list).

So now here you go again with your same STUPID columns about moves teams are making barely two months after the season has ended and because Vick hasn’t been picked up by another team — his chances of regaining a start in the NFL is gone.

Let me let you in on a secret Ledbetter — YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT Mike Vick will be doing at the beginning of the season. For the non-football fan who said that a running QB has never made it in the Pro’s, it’s obvious you are no more a student of the game any more that your all have accused MV of being..How so

Kenny Stabler, John Elway, Steve Young, Mark Brunell, Randall Cunningham, and even Kordell Stewart as well as a countless other running QB’s have made an impact on the NFL.

As for baggage, MV’s situation is a mere shadow compared to the repeated complaints of rape against Ben Rothlesberger(One of my favorite QB’s, but not favorite person.)

Yet, everyone is talking about a damn dog-fighting charge!

Each time MV touched th field you knew something electrifying would happen.

as for inaccuracy…..
My favorite QB BRETT FARVE, has for the last 4-5 seasons made the critical mistake that has cost his teams shots at the Super Bowl.
The 4th quarter magic is gone, but durng the season Brett can get the job done.

Racism…..there are so many refurbished caucasian QB’s out there who haven’t and aren’t ever going to be @@@@@, yet time and time again they have been given opportunity after opportunity.

If you’ve ever played ball or any competitive sport in your life, then youunderstand that it’s desire which makes players become as great as they are. Prime Example:

I went to Lincoln High in San Diego, Terell Davis had been benched and cut from teams in San Diego.

Te greatest BB player in the world, Michael Jordan, was cut, becuase of inaccuracies in his game, and it was desire that mad ehim (under a great coach) become who he is today.

MV needs an opportunity just as all of the other QB’s have gotten.

Michael Vick has received a opportunity last time i checked? Pretty sure he is back in the NFL and on the Eagles roster?

Racism? Do you really wanna go there? Are you really using that as an example why Vick isn’t starting?

You wanna compare Michael Vicks career to Brett Favres? Really? Really? LoL.

Lance, you also say that Michael Vicks baggage and his situation is a mere shadow compared to the repeated complaints of sexual assault against Ben Roethlesberger? Although bad, and im not here to excuse it but, i gotta bring up a little known catch phrase that sounds a little somtheing like this ” Innocent until proven guilty”. Last time i checked Ben has not been charged with anything and has never been found guilty of anything. If he is however, i will be the first to take a swipe at him. You are aware Michael Vick gave NUMEROUS unsuspecting innocent women Herpes while he KNOWINGLY had it right? You remember Ron Mexico? Shall we go there?

And are you really comparing Michael Vick to Steve Young and John Elway or Randal Cunningham? I could have a field day with you. Most of what you claim is outrageous. Plain and simple.

First of all to you who are quite serious about these comments, don’t let this get to you because none of us know what we are talking about, just a lot of speculations, wishes backed up with almost 0 facts.

Here is my nothing on Vick:

Philadelphia brought Vick to town for only one reason, to be their starter. He is capable and showed it last year by coming in without a chance to develop any kind of rhythm and scoring touch downs (thats hard)and one only knows what he could have accomplished if he was the starter. He was used sparingly because they wanted to preserve him for 2010. Mcnabb is about to be traded, Kolb will crash early in the season and Vick will take over. Philly has already proved that they can handle any protesters, animal rights groups, peta (no caps on purpose because I feel that way about the hypocrites) and can separate his past history from his present. Vick will start for Philly an bring excitement to a team that needs it and also put bodies in seats. Why do you think Mcnabb and Kolb is trying so hard to get out of town. The writing is on the wall. Now there’s my nothing, bash away!

1) Why are teams shying away from Vick?

Someone else already pointed this out, but the biggest difficulty with Vick is that his skillset (assuming there hasn’t been any erosion) is SO unique that you basically have to re-craft your entire offense to suit it. Then if he gets hurt, you really have no backup in that mold. That might be fine if Vick is 22 years old and a team wants their next franchise QB, but Vick is 30 so the shelf life is eight years shorter.

2)Do you suspect the Eagles are holding him to drive up his trade value and will move him around the draft?

We’re all just onlookers and we don’t know $#!+ but based on my observations, it seems like the guy Reid really wants but doesn’t want to say out loud is Kolb. I think the team would be perfectly willing to trade *both* McNabb & Vick if they think it would help them build a team around the new guy. But he has to trade McNabb first because McNabb will definitely raise more of a fuss than Vick about not being the starter.

3) Will he remain in Philadelphia in his Wildcat role?

I’d answer that with a half “yes.” I think the McNabb talks have distracted people from the Vick pursuit which will leave him 2nd string behind Kolb. But because so much isn’t known about Kolb, it could either be “the kid’s great and Vick will just have to accept his Wildcat snaps” or it could be “wow, the guy’s really awful so I guess Vick’s the starter after all.”

4) Would he be a good fit in Minnesota if Brett Favre doesn’t come back?

Maybe…that team would be AWFULLY fast at that point. But at the same time, it wouldn’t really make their offense as multidimensional as it was in ‘09. McNabb would be the better fit though because he’s already worked with Childress, has less rust and would just “slip into” the role a lot better.

Everybody wants to come down on Vick the bottom line is that the man did his time and is trying to get his life back in order..and as far as it goes about VICK not having it anymore??? Are you crazy?? Vick still has it and he will get his chance to prove it! Not a Phillies Fan by any means ,but he will get his Chance somewhere…All you haters are in the way and I am assuming that most of you are Cowboys fans cause all they do is cry and wine and got to have something to b*thc about.GO VICK GLAD TO HAVE YOU BACK IN THE NFL….VA LOVE
