Michael Boley's signing with the Giants likely was responsible for the Falcons receiving a fifth round compensatory draft pick.
The Falcons were awarded two compensatory picks for the 2010 NFL draft at the owner’s meeting on Monday in Orlando.
The Falcons received a third and fifth round draft pick and will now have eight picks for the draft, which will he held April 22 -24 in New York.
Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it signs in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.
The picks are awarded on a formula developed by the NFL Management Council that is based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula does not cover every free agent.
In 2009, the Falcons lost four free agents in linebacker Keith Brooking (Dallas), cornerback Dominique Foxworth (Baltimore), Michael Boley (New York Giants) and Grady Jackson (Detroit).
The maximum number of compensatory picks a team may receive is four. Also, a team can not trade their compensatory picks.
Foxworth was likely worth the third round pick and Boley was likely responsible for the fifth round pick in part because of the amount of their contracts and playing time.
Foxworth signed four-year, $28 million contract with the Ravens. Boley signed a five-year, $25 million contract with the Giants.
The lost of Brooking and Jackson were essentially a wash because of the signings of linebacker Mike Peterson and center Brett Romberg.

On our comp. picks, do we pick after all 32 picks in the 3rd & 5th are gone and if so how do we know which team gets to use the comp. picks first as i’m sure we aren’t the only team who got comp. picks?

The 98th player in a draft is a solid player. This gives the Falcon the 19th, 81st and 98th players. 1st Round (No. 19 overall),
3rd Round (No. 81), 3rd Round (98th), 4th Round, 5th Round (2),
6th Round (2). Eight players. I smell a trade to move up.

So do we trade up into the 2nd? or get another 3rd? cause the was I see it we cant prove the value with the picks we can trade to equal a 2nd rounder, unless we give up a pick in next years draft as well.
The only way we can get a 2nd is if another team shows interest in a player already on our roster.
I understand the opinion of getting rid of norwood, but I’m telling you I’d rather see Jenkins leave first. Does any team out there want either one of these guys? And is it even possible to get a 2nd for them?

Falcon fans are somewhat shortsighted on the value of Jamal Anderson to this defense. He and C. Davis have proven the most effective and durable against the run. A critical look showed Jamal Anderson penetrating opponents interior line given the few opportunites at DT. A seasons long rotation of Anderson, Jerry and Babineaux on 3rd long will give Atlanta the interior pass rush to compliment the faster DE’s.
Taylor Mays could make a good Atlanta defense great. USC set him close to the line of scrimmage on 1st and 2nd down and centerfield on obvious passing down. Atlanta could do the same at LB and miximize his size and speed. Peterson can secure the position until Mays earns his way into the lineup. Draft Mays and rotate Anderson at DT and anyone else they draft will be a cherry on top

Mike C., Completely agree about Anderson as DT, imagine if he packed on 15 lgs, a 6-7 300 lb DT. Hard to throw over that. I like Mays IF Spoon is taken by the Giants. I’d go Spoon, Graham then Mays. Mays has the most upside by far but Spoon will be a probowler. Good post.

Hey DeCoud was a compensatory third round, 98th pick guy for us in 2008. Man if we get someone of his talent again at that pick, WOW! Even the 91st pick that year, Jermicheal Finley (TE GB) would be an awesome type of player to have. I’m getting to excited.

I agree with Mike C on the issue of JA98. He and Chauncey Davis are pretty good against the run. They both have good value to the team. I only wish more fans would stop only looking for sack numbers, and realize that these guys are solid players. As far as the draft picks, I trust TD with his picking, hey we just finished back to back winning seasons, and I think we are on to bigger and better things as long as we keep Smitty and TD.

Please no more JA98 good D talk from the worthless McKay draft along with that other bust Chris Houston. I watched every game and the only good D I remember seeing was when JA98 and CH23 were out of the lineup. Too weak and slow to play DT or DE. If can’t trade or release, then move to 4th string TE maybe.

@Mike C and @JJ,
There is no way in Hades that the Falcons will pick Taylor Mays. You guys must have forgotten that the team spent a 2nd round pick on William Moore last year (easy to forget, I suppose, since he got hurt). But the team, by all indications, expects him to step up and snatch the starting SS spot from E. Coleman. Moore is better than Mays anyway. The only reason he slipped to the 2nd round last year is because an ankle injury slowed him down. Had he come out as a junior, he would have been a top 10 pick. Trust me, we have a stud coming up at the SS position. ‘Willy Mo’ will make a huge splash in 2010.

I’m SOOO excited about that 3rd round pick. We now have two 3rd round picks and can do some serious damage with that.
Plus, it takes some pressure off of that 1st round pick. We may be able to grab something different/unexpected in the 1st, and not have to worry about picking between two different positions in the third.
For instance, taking another DT for depth and versatility purposes can happen in the third, and we’d still be able to do something like take a C or a WR. Or we could do both of those and ignore the DT position until later, where we have two shots at it in the 5th. You never know. This is almost as good as having a 2nd rounder…but not quite…

Some of you guys(Chris Taylor) are beginning to see the light. We know there are an unusually high number of good players well beyond Round 1. We know the #19 pick will not solve all the problems. Sure this one pick will help, if he’s not a dud like we see so many times with draft picks. Think about exchanging this one pick for 4 later high round picks. Then the Falcons would have 11 picks, including a high round 2.
What can we get for #19? There is a numerical value for each draft position. #19 is 875 points. The Chiefs pick #5, Seattle #6. Cleveland #7, Oakland #8. So, for example, #6 Seattle, their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th round picks are worth 891 points. #7 Cleveland’s same picks are worth 861 points. So let’s see if we can trade #19 to one of the above teams for their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th round picks. These early 2nd,3rd, 4th, & 5th round picks will help upgrade the team more than the single #19 pick.

[...] Via D. Orlando Ledbetter of the AJC comes word that the Falcons have snared third and fifth round picks for the losses of Domonique Foxworth and Michael Boley. Considering neither of them were fantastic for their respective teams in 2009, I’d say the Falcons made out very well. Because we signed Brett Romberg and MIke Peterson, we did not receive compensatory picks for Grady Jackson and Keith Brooking, due to a Byzantine set of rules set forth by the Catholic Church in the year 1088 and that lie at the heart of Dan Brown’s next novel. i say offer up the first round pick. see what teams come calling and what they offer in return…or offer up the first and a third rounder for two second rounders. i believe TD would be more dangerous with that.

Both Falcons 3rd round picks are pretty late in the round, going to be a lot of plays drop off the board after the 1st round pick. That going to be hard to deal with.

Trade #19 for 2-2’s,then we have 2-3’s, 1-4th, 2-5ths, 2-6ths Moore, Williams, Douglas and Jerry back from injury and Robinson at CB plus some young guys with alot more experience.
Sounds good. Go Falcons!!!!!!!!!!!
