Mock Draft 4.0: Spoon goes “Ham” for Falcons

BIRDLAND – As we inch closer to the draft, the picture is starting to come into better focus for the Falcons.

We know the Falcons are looking to draft a center, but the evidence is pointing away from LaShawn Maurkice Pouncey this week.

We have to factor in a couple of new variables this week:

1. The private workout for Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon. (We’re also hearing that the Falcons are sniffing around Texas Christian linebacker Daryl Washington.)

2. The private workout set up for Boston College center Matt Tennant, who’s the fourth ranked center in the draft and could be available in the third round.

Everything went “fine” with Weatherspoon’s workout and meetings with the team.

Weatherspoon had this to say about his workout with the Falcons on his twitter page (Thanks to e-mailer Phil Sharp for sending this along. Spoon has since protected his tweets!!! They call this “Citizen Journalism!”):

“The workout was stellar! Then we got on the board and I did well on that as well! Let’s go!”

Here’s another tweet:

“Just finished my workout wit the Dirty Birds! Went HAM! #19!!!??”

Spoon’s tweet before the workout:

“Workout in the AM with the Atlanta Falcons! I’m excited to get it in once again! To all the ATL fans, Keep (your) ears open!! Time to rest up… 6:48 PM Mar 16th.”

Spoon’s twitter name is SeanWSpoon12.

Okay, now we have to figure out what “Went Ham” means. The kids have their own little language these days. So a trip the urban dictionary is in order.

Urban Definition of Ham:

Ham — When a person is unstoppable or just in the zone in any type sport or competition setting; It can also be defined as going crazy and buying up everything in a store; or even doing something beast like

I went ham on Tyrone out on the court yesterday; I went ham in the Gucci store earlier today; Damn you went ham on them wings

With the 19th pick in Mock Draft 4.0, the Falcons select Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon.

Charlie Whitehurst has a future with the Seattle Seahawks.

Charlie Whitehurst has a future with the Seattle Seahawks.

Overall, Jimmy Clausen is dropping faster than Brady Quinn and Aaron Rodgers right about now. Seattle’s trade for former Clemson and Chattahoochee High star Charlie Whitehurst signals they have their quarterback-in-training of the future. We have Clausen and his leadership issues, slipping out of the first round.

AJC’s 2010 MOCK DRAFT 4.0

Staff writer D. Orlando Ledbetter projects the first round:

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford is headed for St. Louis in the Mock Draft 3.0.

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford is headed for St. Louis in the Mock Draft 3.0.

1. St. Louis Rams: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma. Seems like a lock now that his medicals are starting to check out. His strongest attribute is his accuracy and the Rams can see that from his tape.

2. Detroit Lions: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska. The Lions are tinkering with the idea of snapping up one of the tackles, but decide to keep working on their defense.

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma. A nice fit for the Buccaneers’ defense.

4. Washington Redskins: Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State. The Redskins start the run on offensive tackles.

5. Kansas City Chiefs: Eric Berry, DB, Tennessee. The Creekside High product was injured at his pro day, but his combine workout was more than sufficient.

6. Seattle Seahawks: Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa. He’s not as athletic as some of the other tackles, but has great pass protecting ability.

6. Cleveland Browns: Joe Haden, CB, Florida. Ran a strong 4.4 at his Pro Day, after running 4.58 at the combine. He blamed that poor showing on a bad back.

8. Oakland Raiders: Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma. Raiders coach Tom Cable gets some help for his offensive line.

9. Buffalo Bills: Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee. (Biggest mover of the week!) The Bills are switching to the 3-4 and are undersized at the nose tackle spot. Williams could be the anchor.

10. Jacksonville Jaguars: Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama. With the signing of Aaron Kampman, the Jaguars are clearly focusing on defense.

11. Denver Broncos: Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State. The Broncos need a Brandon Marshall replacement.

Sergio Kindle12. Miami Dolphins: Sergio Kindle, LB, Texas. The Dolphins need to replace linebacker Joey Porter.

13. San Francisco 49ers: Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech. Mike Singletary needs help on offense, but can’t pass up Morgan.

14. Seattle Seahawks: C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson. The Seahawks need to add some pop to their offense.

15. New York Giants: Taylor Mays, LB, USC. The Giants see linebacker and decide to gamble on Mays making the conversion from safety.

16. Tennessee Titans: Earl Thomas, S, Texas. The Titans elect to add some secondary help.

17. San Francisco 49ers: Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers. The 49ers continue to the run on left tackle prospects.

18. Pittsburgh Steelers: Brandon Graham, OLB/DE, Michigan. Will be a good fit for the Steelers playing opposite of James Harrison.

19. Atlanta Falcons: Sean Weatherspoon, LB, Missouri. The Falcons went to Missouri to conduct a private workout and like Spoon’s swagger. The key will be how well he looked dropping into pass coverage.

20. Houston Texans: Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State. The Texans have to get a prospect to replace Dunta Robinson, who signed with the Falcons in free agency.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida. The Bengals have addressed their wide receiver concerns and will look for defensive help.

22. New England Patriots: Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho. The Patriots attempt to solidify their once-proud offensive line.

23. Green Bay Packers: Everson Griffen, DE, USC. The Packers can look away from tackle after re-signing Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher.

Corey Wootton, Northwestern.

Corey Wootton, Northwestern.

24. Philadelphia Eagles: Corey Wootton, DE, Northwestern. Has great size and anchors well against the run.

25. Baltimore Ravens: Patrick Robinson, CB, Florid State. There’s no need for a wide receiver after getting Anquan Boldin and re-signing Derrick Mason.

26. Arizona Cardinals: Charles Brown, OT, USC. The Cardinals try to solidify the line.

27. Dallas Cowboys: Nate Allen, S, South Florida. With Berry, Thomas and Mays off the board, the Cowboys for Allen to help improve the back-end of their secondary.

28. San Diego Chargers: Ryan Matthews, RB, Fresno State. He is shooting up draft broads. The Chargers need a bigger back to counter the smaller Darren Sproles.

29. New York Jets: Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame. He’s an explosive playmaker and should strive opposite of Braylon Edwards.

30. Minnesota Vikings: Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers. He is moving up on most boards after turning in a strong showing at the scouting combine.

31. Indianapolis Colts: LaShawn Maurkice Pouncey, C, Florida. The Colts are in the same boat as the Falcons. They know Jeff Saturday is not going to play forever and decide to get his heir-apparent.

32. New Orleans Saints: Jerry Hughes, LB, Texas Christian. The Saints have to replace Scott Fujita who signed with Cleveland during free agency.

ON THE FRINGE

Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame

but seriously, i think spoon would be a great pick. a need pick to shore up a really weak OLB crew that is and aging. how many times did we get burned on 3rd down with dump offs to the rb and short hooks and the 3-step drop? no amount of pass rush will help with these. only smart quick coverage

Orlando- any idea when the NFL will announce the supplemental picks? Guessing the Falcons will get 1 and maybe 2 3rd round picks- hopefully that will be enough to gain the 2nd rounder they don’t have from the Gonzalez trade.

Yea .. He also siad he talked to William Moore after the work out…. I talked to William Moore (on twitter) a couple of times… He thinks he and Curtis Lofton can make one of the best LB combo’s in the NFL.

DLed–
Weatherspoon has looked smooth dropping back into coverage everytime I’ve seen him. If that’s our only concern it’s a small one.
Re: Pouncey– if the draft goes as you’ve outlined we obviously won’t go his direction, but a lot of these mocks have him in the mid 2nd. Under your scenario DET would be a good trade target as they love Kyle Wilson( ever since their staff coached him in the senior bowl) and they could leap-frog HOU by dealing with us.
DET gets Wilson @ 19 and our #114 Total=941pts ATL gets #34,66 and 97 Total=932pts if we can get a 2011 6th or 7th to even out the numbers, that’s gravy.
If we deal down with AZ for “Spoon, Pouncey, OT Saffold DT Price or another of the better Linemen becomes much more feasible. If we stay put at 19 your choice is, I believe, the correct one…..

Thanks or the updates.

Interesting enough. Spoon would be decent, but would he help us get to the QB? If Graham is gone, then Jason Pierre-Paul might be a good fit too. Think about last year…we went with Jerry, but the next drafted D-Lineman had a very nice year (Ziggy Hood). Plainly put, we need help getting to the QB and covering receivers when they let it loose down the field. We were SOLID AGAINST THE RUN last year…and we get Jerry back! WE WERE MISERABLE AGAINST THE PASS last year…heck, if you don’t get a DE, then we should draft a CB.

DOL, will Spoon and Nicholas (#54) play the same postion?

I think that’s the right pick, D-Led. Spoon looks like an impact player at OLB to pair up with Lofton.

I do think that someone is going to take Clausen in the first round. It’s too hard to pass up on a QB if you need one, and there are several teams that need one. While I don’t think he’s worth the pick, I’ll be surprised if he makes it out of the top 10-15.

The only pick should be Spoon why gamble on a DE we have two we are developing. Spoon can drop in coverage and cover the screen. It a waste to draft a question mark DE in the first round. We can get lang from troy later if you must have a DE but then who is the odd man out?

If the packers did not like the Saftey we signed on special teams what is the reason we went out and got him?

Spiller should not be a falcon. DRAFT DEFENSE ESPECIALLY OLB NAMELY SPOON!!!

DOL, Now that’s more like it. I will go along with Weatherspoon. Just not Pouncey in the first. I am hearing that Weatherspoon is reminding many NFL people of a young Ray Lewis. He would be a good fit for the Falcons. Its Spoon or B.Graham at 19 is what I am betting. I would also like to see the Falcons sign D.Howard and J.Phillips for depth. They can cut Chauncey Davis. Phillips would challenge E.Colemen and he is very familiar with Brian VanGorder. D.Howard had 10 sacks last year and gave the Falcons fits when he was with the Saints.

FINALLY something worth printing. ‘Bout time you came around to reality DLed. Spoon is an awesome pick. First off he wants to be here. With the type of program this team is bulding he’ll probably be around here for a long while. He’ll be a vocal leader on defense and back-up his talk with game. That in turn will make the rest of the D step up as well. True we have some needs on the OL and DE, but this pick WILL fill a need and allow us to focus on Offense for the rest of the draft and if need be next year as well.

Offense wins games
But Defense wins Championships.

WTF were you thinking??? — Thanks for your kind words. Feels a lot better not getting torched in my own blog.

GAinGA — Good call on Daryl Washington. He appears to be the the backup plan if Kindle and Spoon are not there at 15. They went to go work him out after leaving Missouri last Wednesday.

Greg — Under your scenario, it looks like Daryl Washington is next on their list of LBs. They could still go DE, but most of their early works seems to center around LBs.

J.J.M. – He’s definitely int he mix.

south ga boy in the atl – Glad to have your support! Do we get to drink beer and watch basketball in Spoon Rehab?

Its all good at Spoon rehab DOL. we will sneak the beer thru the back door. Say DOL, have you heard anything, on deep background of course, about trying to get a 2nd rd pick by shopping JA98 to some of the 3-4 defensive teams, such as Clev or NE, that have some ptential picks to trade. He seems to be far better suited for a 3-4 rather than a 4-3 and there are some teams who need a big run stopping DE in their 3-4. Im just wondering if JA98 and a 4th or 5th rd comp pick could get us a 2nd rd pick, or is he just not tradeable and we either keep him or cut him. Would you agree that deciding the future of JA98, with the Falcons, has to be made (and maybe it already has but hasn’t been announced) before deciding the direction of the draft ? Inquiring minds want to know. Remember DOL, “One day at a time”

@ GAinGA
I didn’t mean to say that we don’t need a DE I don’t think we should take one in the first round. DEs have to develop, adjust to the speed of the game. Jamal anderson was a beast a man among boys in the SEC but even playing in the SEC he still had to adjust look at all the DEs taken in the first round lately who has come out and dominated. The ones that dominate jump on the scene after a couple of years of being in a system.

We have two developing pass rushers and they both should make strides this year. Remember how long it took The DE (can’t think of his name) we lost to Seattle we drafted him in the first round.

OLBs can play right away DEs can’t in most cases. I would rather have a player that could play right away since we belive in building thru the draft. I would rather us take that OLB or even the center than take a player that takes two to three years to develop we.

We have been cringing because DL3 was calling for the center out of FL but look at the track record for centers in the last couple of years. Manigold is a monster he started from day one for the jets there have been others.

The best value for us right now is to take a player that you can turn loose and to me Linebacker is a position you can do that in his first year in. If you take a LB in the first round you are expecting him to start right away.

How in the world would D. Morgan, a true 4-3 end, fit in SF’s 3-4 D? Instead, I see us taking Spiller, Graham, E. Thomas, or D. Williams at 13 in your scenario. Swap the 13 and 14 picks and it will satisfy a more realistic approach, IMO. Morgan fits better as an Elephant in Carroll’s D and Spiller would instantly become our return specialist and a true offensive weapon at RB/WR and WildCat QB.

I hope T. Williams falls to us, but Spiller would be an awesome consolation prize.

In no way can I see drafting offense in the first round of this draft. Almost all our immediate needs are on defense.

Draft guys in later rounds for future needs (TE/C/WR) on offense. If we WERE gonna draft offense, I’d be looking for a WR to replace Jenkins, first and foremost.

This is the dumbest story ever. Ledbetter previously was so sure that the Falcons would take Pouncey that he put a poll for viewers to pick who the Falcons would draft. He was so clever that all of the answers to the poll were Pouncey. I guess now he is eating crow because there is no way that the Falcons first round pick will not be on the defensive side of the ball since they don’t have a 2nd round pick this year.

I would much rather have Spoon than Graham (who I think is going to be a major bust). Pouncey wasn’t so bad, but he was a reach to take that early. If we end up going Pouncey we better be trading down to get him .. or maybe moving up with our 2nd round pick to get him.

Toby Gerhart should be the first RB selected. He has more balance & power than Spiller (who only scored a 10 on the Wonderlic) and Dwyer.

Orlando,
Don’t look now , but the Steelers have this guy named Lamarr Woodley playing opposite Harrison right now. He’s not bad. LOL……Try again…….I know you’re the birds’ beat writer, but shouldn’t an even elementary knowledge of the remainder of the league be required of you?

I can see Spoon getting snatched from our hands. Still not seeing an OL in the first round, as I don’t think any of the truly top guys will be available….but what do I know?

I do know one thing. IMUS is a straight up hater…..

Sorry to say this Ledbetter, but “Duh!”. An outside linebacker @ 19 is a much better value than an offensive center and Weatherspoon has shown that he has all the tools to be a force in the 4-3 scheme. I would be very excited to start Weatherspoon next to Lofton for years to come.

You can always find serviceable offensive line help in later rounds. I suspect the Falcons will come away with a center and one or two other linemen.

Brain,

Gerhardt has like 1.5 good years left in his body. He was (over)used at Stanford. Name 1 collegiate back who was a workhorse like him and has had a good NFL career? Not many, for sure.

As long as you pick up a field goal kicker in the fourth round, then we will be fine. We missed the playoffs last year because of this needs position.

@ D Led- Here’s one for ya…. Why on this earth haven’t the Falcons INKED SNELLING???? Please tell me… It’s burns me up not to see this guy signed. He is an outstanding power back, Now of course not as much power as Turner but certainly more than Norwood. Tell me som’em DL!!!

ALB Falcon: Snelling has received his tender. With a nice pay raise. They have to go through the restricted process with him.

lee: Not a big Clausen man. What has he won? QB needy teams (except for Buffalo) are making moves now. He slipping right now, just like Brady Quinn. His leadership issues are real if Pete Carroll is turning his back on him.

Brain: Woodley’s a beast. But you know how the Steelers operate. Go ask Greg Lloyd and Joey Porter.

Yeah! They need ta “ham it up” wit Witherspoon, AND, Westbrook is on the market. I think that will give some amps to the back field if we get him.

DOL, we also plan to work out J. D. Walton the Baylor C. Probably a better NFL prospect than Tennant. Jason Smith called him the best Baylor OL on the team when he was drafted in the top 5. Better leader, run blocker, and size give him a edge over Tennant.
