Before the Falcons trade of cornerback Chris Houston was officially consummated over the weekend, the two side revised the compensation.

The Falcons are now set to received a sixth round pick in 2010 and a conditional seventh round pick in 2011.

The Falcons were initially slated to move up 16 spots from 18 to second in the fifth round, but that part of the trade did not reach the final deal.

At this point in time I’d settle for Rich Mckay’s resignation. His drafts undid all the good Dan Reeves accomplished.Mora Jr and Petrino both must have had some compromising info or pictures of Richie.

D-Led,

Thanks for the update. I hope D-Rob changes his number so I don’t have to think about C Houston with the #23 and the Dreds.

Tradegate indeed. How can the Falcons issue a press release including terms that were not official and now apparently different?

I wanted that 5th position swap more than the 6th..

Thank God Mckay does not run the draft anymore. 2007 was terrible!

Something is better than nothing. How much $$ were the Falcons obligated to pay Houston, [if any], if they had not traded him? Hopefully he can improve his game with Detroit and Atl. can get that other pick.

Either way the Falcons didn’t get close to the value for Houston that they should have. He was a legit 2nd round pick, and has very good quickness and speed. What he didn’t have was a pass rush from the front four. I realize he got beaten in space several times (we hardly blitzed at all last year), but several times this occurred when the opposing QB had about 8 calm seconds to find someone. This kind of situation would put any but the top two or three CBs in the NFL on ice. I’ll bet anyone a donut that Houston ends up starting for the Lions. This worthless trade by the Birds reminds me of the way Dimitroff got rid of Schaub. It seems no one remembers what a dumb move he made there. Not to mention releasing Vick without getting anything at all for him. I’m not seeing much in the way of brains from Dimitroff so far.

I am very disappointed. Though I never liked Houston’s play as a starting, #1 corner, I thought he was worth more than this. I mean, Tye Hill could not even start for the RAMS and we gave up a 7 for him.

Greg;

Agree with you about Houston, but wasn’t Schaub traded before TD got here? MV was still here when Schaub was traded, and MV was gone before TD got here. Right?

…and as for MV: he had no value under his contract terms to anyone. The only way to nullify those terms were to release him. He was due millions of dollars from the Falcons if they had kept him or from any team they traded him to.

Dude you were making so much sense when you started your post. I felt like I was reading something written by a smart knowledgable guy and then you started on Dimitroff and completely changed my mind about how smart you really are. You need to dig in the archives a little and get your facts straight.

Hey Greg, Put down that water bottle that ain’t got no buds in it, and tell those barking dogs u got from MV7 to shut up so u can use your 1 candle power brain to try and post something halfway intelligent. TD wasn’t with the Falcons when Schaub was traded, and at 10 mil a yr to take over his salary nobody was going to give us, even a prescription for Ron Mexico, for MV7. Son try to think before you post.

Chris Houston is GARBAGE, I’m so hqappy he’s off our team. He’s flat footed and gets beat every time the ball is thrown to his side of the field. You could make a 10 minute highlight reel of him getting beat. Chris Houston went to take a leak and got beat by the toilet. And I agree with mystikal, AOA is a beast! But we need DE and OLB more than CB now

To paraphrase, “I;m not seeing much in the way of brains from Greg so far”. C’mon dude, you think that Houston is worth a #2 when everybody in the league knows we just traded for D-Rob? We were gonna have to release him most likely anyway to keep Owens and Grimes…..the other teams know that.

I’m with ya on the Schaub thing, though. And that dumbass Dmittroff drafted Jamal Anderson with the # 8 Pick. That was a real bust………And what about Bruce Pickens…….and Aundrey Bruce…….and Joe Profit……..

This totally stinks!
That pick swap was my favorite part of this whole deal! As far as Houston–it’s a pity he never became the man we needed in coverage, forcing us to take less than he was worth just to replace him in favor of someone who can play the ball in the air. There’s a good reason MYSTIKAL likes Mr AOA He’s a great value at #98COMP or #117–don’t think he’ll be available much later than that…..

I agree that Rick McKay is a failure. At first I thought Authur Blank was keeping him around because he wasn’t quite sure how Dimitroff would work being a first time GM and all. Dimitroff has proven he is the man for this job. Most of us in here are use to people keeping their jobs based on performance, this is obviously not the case with McKay. I think he just got an extension or higher position within the organization recently. However, it’s interesting to me that we give up a 7th round pick for someone else’s 1st round bust (Tye Hill) and turn around and give our 2nd round bust up for a 6th round pick. A bust is a bust no matter what color his uniform is.

Two things that had me wondering about Dimitroff at the end of the season last year, even though I like the guy, was the lack of pursuit of real depth at the DT position given Jerry’s injury history and the fact that Thomas Johnson had not played football in a couple of years and the lack of pursuit of a CB after letting Foxworth go in free agency knowing that they had already threaten to bench Chris Houston in preseason. Brian Williams just fell in our laps after he was cut for not taking a reduction in salary and Tye Hill…well the Rams watch him in preseason and knew he was a bum and found someone desperate enough to take him. When a team lets a 1st round pick go for a 7th round pick you gotta believe this guy is garbage.

I think the Falcons should look into signing Shawn Merriman I know its risky and he had that Tila Teqila crap go down but the man is a beast. Granted he wasnt at his best last year I think he will be fully recovered from his surgery and is poised to just go off for a monster Defensive Player of the Year type season and he is an unrestricted free agent

Also I’m gonna catch heat but T.O. could help us out as a #2 and he can’t say he is the most decorated reciever when you have Gonzalez to make that claim and can you imagine the Red Zone Offense Roddy White, T.O. Tony Gonzalez and The Burner to pound it in. I know its risky but I think we could get him on the cheap.

You’re not always going to get equal value back for a pick. Stop and think about it for a second. If the pick had turned out well, you wouldn’t be trading the guy, right?

Look where JA98 was picked and tell me we’ll get equal value to his draft status if we trade him. Nope.

We got what we got for Houston. Let it lie.

D-Led, any insights as to why the Falcons would apparently agree to decrease compensation for a trade that they had already consummated, according to their press release?

Understanding that the value of the 5th round jump was only 9.4 value points (the same as a 13th pick in the 7th round), the jump in that key round would seem to have significant value to the Falcons in this deep draft, and a pick this year would hold more value than a 7th next year – if they even get that (the conditions for that “conditional pick” apparently weren’t released).
