Chris Houston traded to the Detroit Lions; Zelenka re-signed

Cornerback Chris Houston was traded to the Detroit Lions for a sixth round pick on Monday, the team confirmed.
Also, as part of the deal, the Falcons will move up to the second pick overall in the fifth round and Detroit will pick 18th in fifth round. The Falcons now have at least six picks in the NFL Draft, which is set for April 22 through 24.
The Falcons are also expected to receive at least two compensatory picks during the league’s meeting later this month in Orlando. Teams are awarded compensatory picks for the players they lose during free agency in the previous year. The Falcons lost linebacker Keith Brooking, linebacker Michael Boley, cornerback Domonique Foxworth and defensive tackle Grady Jackson last season.
Less than 48 hours after signing cornerback Dunta Robinson, the Falcons traded Houston, a former second round pick.
Houston, 25, finished last season on injured reserve after suffering a hamstring injury.
Houston was 41st player taken overall in the 2007 draft. He has started 37 of 44 games over his career with the Falcons.
He became expendable after the signing of Robinson to a six-year, $57 million contract on Saturday. In addition to signing Robinson, the Falcons re-signed cornerback Brian Williams, who opened last season as the starting left cornerback before suffering a season-ending knee injury against the Chicago Bears on Oct. 18.
Houston, who has three career interceptions, played well at times, but struggled while playing the ball in the air. He was nearly benched in 2008 for his lack of physical play.
LONG SNAPPER JOE ZELENKA RE-SIGNED: Long snapper Joe Zelenka was re-signed by the Falcons. He was signed by the Falcons last Dec. 1 and handled the long-snapping duties over the last five games. Zelenka is an 11-year NFL veteran.
Former Pro Bowl long-snapper Mike Schneck, who suffered broken ribs last season, retired last week.

Well it look likes my fear was realized. The GM’s across the
league watched that NFL commercial with Houston about to get
toasted by Steve Smith again one too many times.
How about the next time the NFL wants to use one of our
defensive players in that kind of ad we suggest they look elsewhere.
On a serious note Houston is likley wortn a little more but
the teams knew we were likely to cut him loose anyway.
And it is hard to get the maximum value in a case like that.
At least we won’t have to watch him cover someone pretty well
only to watch it fly right past his head and into their hands
anymore.

It won’t be quite so entertaining to watch Mr,. Houston get beat then flail his arms without looking for the ball to draw a pass interference call now. But I agree that a top flight TE needs to be drafted. While I think Tony G will last for another year or two; we need to start looking forward to when he retires.

Falcons are in the mix. I like it…we are working to get better. Signing the new #23 was a move in the right direction. I think he is the type of veteran CB that we need. However, letting Houston go for a 5th round pick…suspect. Remeber Laurent Robinson last year? #83 Douglas gets hurt and all of sudden we are signing 33 year old out of work receivers that are playing catch with their teenage sons. No, Booker was not the answer but Laurent Robinson could have been.
The point: While I never want to see Chris Houston locked on a #1 receiver in a Birds uniform again…I do believe that he is better than Chevis Jackson, Jamal Fudge and Erik Coleman in coverage. Simplify the game for him…let him play nickel, strong safety on obvious passing situations. Just because his head got banged around during the CHI game last year (has not been right since), it does not mean that he can’t contribute as a situational DB. But…we would rather skower the waiver wire looking for help than coach up this guy who really does have something to offer.
Whatver the case, Dimitroff has focused on the first piece of the equation…now seal the deal by grabbing Brandon Graham during the draft:

BravesFan, you must’ve lived in Milwaukee in ‘61. I still think Houston was better than Coleman in coverage…neither one was really worth an NFL roster. Finally, yes, we would have been better off with Laurent Robinson last year, but you can’t go into a season planning on keeping a guy in case your starter goes down. There’s only 53 spot on the roster. You have to have the best 53, maybe that means weakening yourself in one spot so you can strengthen another. Speaking of strengthening another, I think it might be time for Jamaal to find another franchise. He’s not doing well here.

Looking back on that 2007 draft, what a disaster for Atlanta, with Petrino and the last year of McKay as GM. Snelling at the very end of the draft is the only bright spot.

A 6th rounder and a higher 5th doesn’t seem like much compensation but it’s better than just cutting him. Besides, we really got great picks out of the Schaub and Hall trades, some you win, some you lose and it was a buyer’s market on this trade. I hope he does well in Detroit as he’s still got a ton of ability but after 3 years we still couldn’t tell what what sort of player he is, for whatever reason he just couldn’t finish plays. With Dunta in the fold and if Brian Williams comes back 100% we will be very solid at the corners. DL still has me worried, the ends are promising but inexperienced and with Jerry returning from injury and Babs legal status in the air DT could be a concern.

Yes. The 2007 Draft was terrible. The last staff didn’t exactly leave the cupboard stocked full of talent. This is still part of removing the past to make way for the future. TD couldn’t cut the entire team in the spring of 2008. He needed to hang on to a few guys.
We will be fine. Besides that 5th round pick is like picking at the end of the 4th.

Anderson & Blaylock definately need to leave. Neither have produced & Abraham needs some kind of help if he is to be effective. I dont like coleman either, i believe you need an instinctive probowl safety as they are our last line of defence. After all we were very bad against the pass. My only hope is that Witherspoon falls to 19th. i believe TD will combine later round picks with players [i.e. Anderson] to try to acquire a 2nd round pick.

I would pick up Sharper if the price isnt too high. I’d rather DeCoud learn from him than Coleman. If i’m not mistaken it was coleman & brooking who blew the play that would have kept us in our last playoff game by double covering the 5yd receiver on a 3rd or 4th & 15 play allowing the 1st down marker to be reached.

I wish the NFL would expand the rosters, if only by 2 or 3 players… with a 55 or 56 man roster, teams could keep that one extra special teams standout, that 5th receiver, that one extra LB or DB that can be a good starter if a front-line guy goes down…
I think it’s interesting that as the league has expanded, become more physical, and much more specialized, roster sizes haven’t really changed in 20 or 30 years. Time to add just a couple of extra guys per team so that two or three injuries where guys miss significant time won’t cripple a team.

You can’t trade compensatory picks to move up in the draft, but if you have enough compensatory picks, you can trade some of your regular picks to move up, I suppose. Sure injuries happen. Roster size is fine, dont want the season to be extended past 16 games as much as i love football. There has to be consequences for lack of training which causes most injuries in my opinion. Hard to pull a groin or hamstring if you have good flexibility.

Just pick up Sharper for a couple yrs, draft that much needed OLB & DE. If im not mistaken Abraham’s contract is up after 2011. Now is our time to make a run for the lombardi. We need impact starters on the defensive side now. Pass rush does lead to good secondary stats & vice versa. If we take sharper it will help us & hurt NO. Defence wins championships, look how bad the alleged rapist was in his super bowl wins. Besides, the DE/LB class doesn’t look to be as good next year anyway & it wont be easy to get good ones picking 32nd overall.

Now I’ve heard some good comments about this trade and I’ve heard some bad ones. My thought’s…. I’m glad we’ve finally decided to get rid of Houston. I think we “may” have did ok for the picks we’ve gotten in return. Now, bare with me in saying this and hear me out. We currently have 6 picks in the draft. We also have 2 more coming to us as compensatory picks, which would put us at 8. If we could also pass Jammal off to another team for whatever they could give us at this point would be a plus. That would put us at 9. Now with that said, we could swap 1st round picks, if we could find a team that’s willing to move down and stockpile pick in a rebuilding mode by swapping 1st’s and giving them 2 additional picks to move up anywhere between slots 6 and 9…. maybe 10. So we can go after “Derrick Morgan”! This guy has all the tools that TD wants or anyone for that matter in a DE. He is truly a beast. I’ve seen his motor! He’s in just about every single play from the games I’ve seen him play at G-TECH. Now this I think would definitely solidify our defense if we can acquire this guy. We have a number of guys coming back from injury that are definitely going to make an impact at our other positions of need. Now am I a little far fetched into thinking this will happen…. maybe, but strange things have happened before when draft time comes. I guess at this point, it’s strong wishful thinking, lol.

While there seems to be a lot of sentiment towards throwing Anderson under the bus, so to speak, he WAS showing some signs of being a serviceable DT with adequate skills/run defense expertise to shift to DE in times of need.
Keeping in mind the TOTAL, big picture for the Falcons going into the 2010 season, I think the Jonathan Babineaux situation has made it more important than ever to keep JA in 2010, at least the first few games, and possibly more as injury replacement for Jerry if he proves to be too fragile for a complete NFL season.
There was a marijuana arrest as I recall, that may well result in a suspension for Babineaux, perhaps the first few games of the season (but I don’t believe I saw any final resolution of this situation, or how much time he may lose). They NEED someone to cover his absence, and JA seems to be the obvious , flexible and adaptave answer.
DOL, when will word of the possible Jonathan Babineaux suspension be official? The owners meeting?

My initial reaction to the trade Houston was getting a 4th made it a good trade, and getting a 6th made it a bad trade. Upon further reflection, and reading some comments for more into, I have changed my mind and accept that this deal was still not great, but still acceptable because;
A) We got an underachieving CB, Law for a 7th – and he was originally a 1st! That seems to set the prevailing rate for underachieving corners this year. Now, Houston was a 2nd round starting CB before his injury so his value should be more for starting and less for being a second round (if that has any affect). SO–slotting the two,
a first round underachiever CB that was benched in return for a 7th round pick on one side,
a underachiever second round CB that was starting before a season ending injury (with unknown affect on his future performance) for a high 6th and a 16 spot jump up the 5th on the other side of the ledger.
Looking at it that way, the Houston trade had the better return for the Falcons with higher risk/reward potential for Detroit because of the injury and starting potential.

@Doc. I meant trading the picks they have. TD loves to stockpile picks. I believe Falcons will give up 19th pick and 3rd rounder to move up if their guy is there. The will move anywhere from 10 to 15 to ensure they get morgan or paul.

We’d better better hope the CB’s problems aren’t coaching related. I hope he’s the next coming of primetime but how do you get “DON-tay” from “Dunta”? That word looks like it rhymes with “punt” and “uh”.

Alex – Thanks, I agree that it will be interesting. Bottom line, the Lions only lose a 6th and a few spots in the 5th for a potential starting CB. If it doesn’t work out for them, Houston only has one year left on his contract, and 6th rounders often get cut in training camp with less potential than Houston.
Regards Stafford, my admittedly fleeting impression was that he had a rookie year on a mediocre team, getting banged up a lot and finally knocked out- made me recall the early days of the Falcons, a hot QB just out of college named Randy Johnson taking his shots. He DID show toughness, continuing to jump out onto the firing line to try and get some W’s out there. Hope he survives long enough to get some better protection in the pocket. He will only improve if he survives long enough. Smart, but not especially mobile.

We didn’t get hosed. Look at the trade sheet every team uses. The value is about right. A 4th would have been robbery for us, and if Houston was so good, why trade him.

Jamaal Anderson should be worried ‘we are about to call dem hogs’, LOL and tell him to leave, but he has been a decent DT swingman. Just like the team seemed to stay away from VT, Petrino’s new team is as toxic to us, LOL

Now I’ve heard some good comments about this trade and I’ve heard some bad ones. My thought’s…. I’m glad we’ve finally decided to get rid of Houston. I think we “may” have did ok for the picks we’ve gotten in return. Now, bare with me in saying this and hear me out. We currently have 6 picks in the draft. We also have 2 more coming to us as compensatory picks, which would put us at 8. If we could also pass Jammal off to another team for whatever they could give us at this point would be a plus. That would put us at 9. Now with that said, we could swap 1st round picks, if we could find a team that’s willing to move down and stockpile pick in a rebuilding mode by swapping 1st’s and giving them 2 additional picks to move up anywhere between slots 6 and 9…. maybe 10. So we can go after “Derrick Morgan”! This guy has all the tools that TD wants or anyone for that matter in a DE. He is truly a beast. I’ve seen his motor! He’s in just about every single play from the games I’ve seen him play at G-TECH. Now this I think would definitely solidify our defense if we can acquire this guy. We have a number of guys coming back from injury that are definitely going to make an impact at our other positions of need. Now am I a little far fetched into thinking this will happen…. maybe, but strange things have happened before when draft time comes. I guess at this point, it’s strong wishful thinking, lol.

What is the point of adding more draft picks for the draft if you are going to draft crappy players!!! Peria Jerry is a sorry defensive lineman and the safety we drafted last year was hurt before we drafted him so what is the point? The falcons have no identity on defense which offensive players would take notice and create some doubt in their minds. Hey how about drafting some defensive players who actually like to hit people. How about a safety who will punish you for catching the ball!!!!!!

Houston was a flat out GARBAGE pick. He could’nt tackle a mannequin, along with Anderson, we have received no value whatsoever for either of those high draft picks. I know we have been through rough times lately, but so has New Orleans. Even with all the changes in management, we still have solid ownership. I know its hard evaluating talent, but for the love of me why did’nt we give a huge contract to Foxworthy 2 yrs ago. He showed more flashes of ability in the few games he played, than any corner playing here in in the last 4 yrs !!!!!!!!!

Good riddins Houston. The only memorable thing he did in Atlanta was get burned by Steve Smith in an NFL channel commerical. Good luck in Motown. God knows you need it. BTW. Start packing Jamal. You are next.
