Dunta Robinson tackling against the Cleveland Browns.

Cornerback Dunta Robinson signed a six-year contract with $22.5 million in guarantees with the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday.

Robinson, who was considered the top cornerback available in free agency, formerly played for the Houston Texans.

Robinson, a native of Athens, played in high school at Clarke Central before going on to star at the University of South Carolina.

Also, quarterback Chris Redman’s contract was a two-year deal,  worth $5.6 milion, with $2.5 million of it guaranteed.

Cornerback Brian Williams’ one-year contract is worth $1.6 million with a heavy roster bonus incentive as he’s battling back from knee surgery.

We need another WR maybe we go after Antonio Bryant we definately need another linebacker cause Mike Peterson was awsome early on but faded away later in the season and I only knew stephen Nicholas was on the team cause he is a 67 overall on madden which explains alot lol. Also we need O-line depth and D-line depth.

Great move by TD……we finally got a shutdown corner and with grimes, williams, and owens….our pass defense will improve immensly. Hopefully William Moore and Peria Jerry can bounce back after injured rookie seasons and really make an impact. I agree though that we still need another pass rusher. Jamaal Anderson was a bust and we need to move out. If we dont go out and get an improvement at DE, im confident sidbury and biermann can make more of an impact with more playing time instead of anderson. Abraham doesnt have to many years left, I say we draft LB first round and if we dont pick up a DE in free agency then we pick one up in the 3rd or 4th. We only gave up 21 points a game last year, and with a healthy offense, and improved defense, we could be a real contender.

Robinson is NOT worth it. As an Atlantan transplanted to TX, I saw nearly every Texans game last year. Robinson is a good, small corner in his prime who will not get any better. Being franchised last year is more of an indication of the Texans using him up for one more year before cutting bait. He is also short, capable of getting beat, and capable of complaining. Closer to home, closer to more distractions with a lot more to spend on it. It is an improvement for the Falcons, but not the solution. That money could have been spent better elsewhere.

Overpaid for Dunta! He is not a shutdown corner and hasn’t been the same since he got hurt in 2008. Looking at his coverage metrics and tackling stats last year he had one game above average for NFL CBs.

Here’s the thing, I don’t think you can take too much away from Dunta’s play last season because a number of factors affected his play. I think it was pretty clear he wasn’t happy in Houston. He was franchised last season, so to him, he was basically counting the days until he could leave. The same situation occured in Carolina with Julius Peppers. The Texans continuously claimed that Dunta was a core player that they were building around, yet they left him with no long-term deal. They never committed to the guy, so why would he commit his heart to playing for the Texans?

Coming off an ACL repair the year before, last year Robinson was just an average CB. They must think he’ll be all the way back this year. I think they over-paid. We actually have more work to upgrading the two lines than we did at CB. I’m not at all sold on the “genius” tag that so many have put on Dimitroff. If he doesn’t do something to get us a pass rush from the front four this year, expect another average team/season.

D. Carter – I guess the “D” stands for dumba$$. First of all it’s not 57 mil it’s 22 mil. Guaranteed money is the only thing that matters. A player an be cut at any moment and all he’s owed is the guarantee. So let’s say Dunta is a slightly better than avg corner for the next 3 yrs and then the Falcons decided to cut him, they would only pay the guarantee which would work out to about 7 mil a yr, which is below the going rate for a shutdown corner and about right for a good one. If we took a corner in rd 1 this yr we would have paid about that much in guaranteed money and it would have been for an untested rookie that may not be worht a crap( see Jimmy Williams). This way we get a proven vet that is 27 and in his prime and has healed from his injury. You see “D” it’s better to have a bird in the hand…. Maybe you know the rest of that saying, or maybe not. Just stick to your fantasy league “D”, and playing madden on ps3. Leave the Falcons to the “grown folks”

Great pickup but we still need some pass rushers. Anyword if TD is looking at anyone else in the FA market? Kampman DE is still out there and so is Joey Porter OLB. Pick up someone at DE or OLB on the FA market and then draft the other.position in the first round.

ESPN, SI, everything I read on the Net about the FA Market all agreed that Roibinson was the best FA at his position and TD went out there and grabbed him. How can anyone not like that? You want him to just sit on the players we have right now and repeat the defense of last year? GREAT JOB TD! Go get us a DE and OLB!

Chop_Champs_95

I wouldn’t mind seeing the Falcons add another LB through free agency but I’d rather not seem them go after someone like Joey Porter (if he is a FA, can’t remember). That guy makes me want to drop kick a newborn infant. Good ball player, but he’s nowhere as good as he makes himself out to be. Now, if he played football like he ran his trap, he’d be the best LB in the history of the game.

Getting back on topic, Demeco Ryans and D’Qwell Jackson are some of the top names out there. Ryans may be undersized but he play, but Jackson finished last year on IR with a hamstring injury. Curious to see if he gets back to his old form next season.

If you look at the top 100 prospects in this upcoming draft you can see that the top 25 is very top heavy with DEs and not so much with OLBs. I think we sign a solid starting OLB and draft a DE. I don’t think we should draft a OLB or DE in the 3rd or 4th round and depend on them starting and fixing our needs. I’d much rather sign a proven starter. Chop_Champ I don’t care about Porter I was just throwing a name out there. I like the AJC to show us a list of avalible DE, OLB, and WR and how much they’d cost/ stats.

Don’t hate on D-Rob too much before you consider this- front 7 of HOU D talent wise is strong yet D didn’t do much- ahem coaching. Kubiak is a joke], entire team is soft and shows it year after year. Bring him in here with Smitty, BVG & the boys and you’ve got a whole nother situation. With D improving as it did down the stretch sans Jerry & Moore, the arrow is pointing up on D in ATL. Put a pass rush on and let D-Rob do his thing…..you’ll see. Vets seem to be pretty happy when they come to ATL from losing situations and show it on the field. Being close to home can only be a plus. Then the nerves of some of you to ask why we didn’t trade for Cromtia or what ever his name is. Great signing by TD and company. Dunta is well worth the money shelled out especially when TD addresses our D-line in the coming weeks. Agree with Falconfan30291 , good points. A GM in the real world (much like a real world manager in a company) can not design the perfect CB, and then place him on the field. There are realistic choices and options. He got the best available rookie talent last year, and this year he got the best available, best fit CB available – and paid for it.

EVERYTHING is a risk, no sure things (Williams, Moore, and Jerry went down with season ending injuries last year with minimal time on the field), but you use when you got to give the best chance possible to succeed.

One always has limited options in reality, and TD got the best of the possible, realistic options, in my opinion – without regard to cost which is no small thing. Good job, and good signing.

TM

I’d like to get some OL depth in free agency. I hope TD realized last year that an injury or two on the o-line will quickly reduce the offense to mediocre. Resign Dahl and Clabo + one more proven lineman. Than use the draft to go after DL, LB and future OL.

But, i like the way things are going so far. Keep it up TD!

This is a solid pickup at a fair market price. So Ga boy in the ATL I agree with you on the gauranteed $.

Dunta is a cover corner folks…he can man up with the best. d.carter…just because he played zone doesn’t mean he isn’t a cover man. He is 27 in his prime…not a 33 year old…but speaking of 33 how about the job Darren Sharper did for the Aints? Not bad! The Birds have a stocked pantry in the secondary now and their will be a fierce competition in camp, which I think is what TD, Smitty and B. want. Owens and Dunta, Williams and Dunta, Grimes/Williams at Nickel…lots of possibilities. CH and CJ could be trade bait. Moore coming back, Jerry coming back. Let’s finish off the D with a Spoon or a Graham.

Coleman is one of the leaders of the D…but are you guys sold on him? Taylor Mays could be there….

I believe Dunta had only 6 interceptions over 4 his last four seasons and had none last year but good tackling stats. Maybe teams avoided him to some degree. He’s only an inch or so taller than Grimes who everyone complains about being so short but Grimes had 5 interceptions last year alone. I’m guessing this is is bad news for Houston and Jackson. I’m not sure Robinson can be considered a shut down corner but he got paid like one. He is our #1 CB now and certainly adds experience and depth to our CB group but is he a major upgrade over Grimes, Owens, Tye Hill, or Brian Williams? He certainly adds experience and depth to our CB group and that’s a good thing. I trust TD knows what he’s doing and now we can focus on OLB and DE with our 1st and 3rd picks. With Jerry and Moore coming back, if we stay relatively healthy, next year should be a great one for the Falcons.

You guys have fun with Dunta. I’ve been watching him since his rookie year. Myself as a Texans fan is so relieved he’s gone. Each year in the league he has gotten worse. He gets burned all the time and is just too small. I have no beef with the Falcons or the fans this move just left me scratching my head to why you would give such a big contract to a guy that can’t make a pick anymore, can be a cancer to the team because he does not know how to shut his mouth sometimes, and he’s getting old. Good luck with that Falcons.

Love this signing. If Williams and Moore come back strong and Owens/DeCoud continue to develop, we’ll have a strong secondary. Huston, Jackson and Coleman ought to net us some picks from someone (I think we should keep Grimes for nickel/dime). Let’s not forget we got a new secondary coach too, for all we know he may be able to teach Huston to turn his damn head and make a play on the ball. If Jerry comes back strong and we get Spoon, I see this defense looking a lot better this year.

Now, if someone could just remind Jenkins he’s a receiver and not a corner, we’d really be in business.

Michael Connor, if I’m not mistaken we just paid him less than what he turned down from y’all to stay there. Maybe being happy is important to him, as is playing for a rising young team (no offense, but he’s probably tired of going 7-9 every year). And old at 27? The only sport that’s old in is women’s college gymnastics. He may not be the greatest corner in the game, but he’s solid and a definite boost to the young core secondary we have here now. We had a major need and we filled it.

Solution to all of you who want a Cb height, move Jenkins to Cb than we could have the biggest , softest Cb in the league , he is excellent at deflecting passes as prof just watch any of his high lite tape the guy has been knocking down passes since his Rookie year.

That is a BIG contract.

However,(1) I don’t look at the contract in terms of $57 million but as $22.5 million guaranteed. I highly doubt the Falcons will honor all six years of the contract. Probably three years…maybe four.

(2) Since ‘10 is not a cap year the first year salary of Robinson’s contract is probably very high. It will not hurt the Falcons in regards to the (non)salary cap. I’m guessing the yearly salary is high for the first two years ,lower in the middle two,and high for the last two years. Again, it is highly unlikely DR collects on the final two years of the six year contract.

The Grinch, don’t know where you are getting your information but we offered him less. and yes he’s at that age where he’s considered old because of his blown out knee he suffered a few years ago he’s playing like he’s already in his 30’s and last time I checked the Falcons took a step back last year while we continue to move foward, think before you talk.

Grinch you are mistaken. The Texans offered a guaranteed $22M deal in 2009 which he turned down, so they franchised him. He didn’t want to be be franchised so he sat out all of training camp, even though he was going to be paid as a top 5 NFL corner. This year his agent went looking for the same deal from the Texans but it wasn’t there because it became clear last year that his play has significantly declined since the major knee injury (blew out all his ligaments). Falcons overpaid.

This signing gives us a very good starting secondary (Dunta Robinson, Brian Williams, Erik Coleman, and Thomas DeCoud). Now the Falcons can focus on depth when it comes to this secondary. Maybe we will pick up another quality DB in the draft. Very good move Falcons!

Pat Yasinskas: I’ll guarantee you right now you’re not going to see Owens (or Michael Vick) in Carolina.

DOL, Robinson will avg. 7.5m give or take for the first 3 yrs. That is about right for a player of his caliber taken 10th overall in the 1st rd in 04 I think. He will get burned, they all do, but he’s instantly the best CB we have. His first yr back from ACL surgery may not have the stats, but typically the 2nd yr back from that injury they return to form. Int are very misleading, look at pass defensed for ex. As most informed fans know, TD used to be a specialist in scouting DB’s. He must like Mr. Robinson. I just hope has matured from the ‘pay me rik’ immaturity. Bottom line: good pick at decent price.

Ken talked about C. Houston possibly moving to FA. That is possible with his speed and agility and he doesnt have to turn his head, it’s all in front of him. Thought? Kapp?

For those of you who think that you have to be above six ft to play defensive back in the NFL. You have got it wrong. The best shutdown corner in the NFL in 2009, Darrelle Revis, is 5′11. Tracy Porter of N.O. who picked off Brett Farve late in the Chapionship game and Peyton Manning to seal the Super Bowl Victory: He’s 5′11. Marcus Trufant is 5′11, Asante Samuel is 5′10, and Bob Sanders, yea he’s pretty good too. He’s 5′8. Height can be helpful, but some of the best in the league are between 5′8 and 5′11.

Said it yesterday and I’ll say it again. Now that we are out of the corner market and Texas is forced to take a corner, the Jets, Packers, and Vikings will be calling with offers to leapfrog Texas to take the best corner. There are teams at the top of the second that need one too. If we can do that, the Pouncey pick looks better. The thing that kills me about Pouncey at 19 is that we could have taken Antoine Caldwell last year in the second round instead of William Moore. I take Caldwell over Pouncey any day. That is the one problem with drafting strictly on need.

DOL’s mock makes more sense than any other I’ve seen. Don’t like Pouncey at 19, but I can sure see it happening. If Bruce Campbell is there you take him. Baker will get hurt again and he is mediocre at best. Bumping Clabo to a guard spot wouldn’t hurt either. Blalock is a weak link.

Ok everyone needs to chill, there is a very good reason why a good rookie CB gets a lot of INTs veteran QBs are going to through a lot of balls his way. Now once he proves himself they will show him a lot more respect, I think we would all agree Nambdi and Revis are the top 2 CB’s right now well they do not tend to get a lot of INTs its pretty tough when no one is throwing to your WR. We definitely need depth at LB and OL I trust TD and staff to find it. When do we find out what we get as far as compensation picks????

I have a pretty good knowledge and grasp of football, and even I am not crazy enough to question the decision made by TD and Smitty to sign CB DRobinson. I was initially against signing DRobinson, ACromartie or Rolle, and I stated my reasons based on what limited info I had at my disposal. But, if TD and Smitty, based on their wealth of info and personal knowledge of him, think he’s the solution to our CB problems and are willing to play him $57M, who are we to complain?

Some of you want to make an issue of us signing a proven vet CB rather than drafting one of your favorite CB. Well, over the last 3yrs we’ve drafted CB’s COwens, CJackson, RMiddleton, CHouston and DIrons, and how has that turned out so far? When you consider the 2 best solutions we’ve managed to come up with at CB over the last 2yrs were DFoxworth and BWilliams, you can understand why they decided to go with a proven vet rather than an unproven draft pick.

Whenever I feel TD and Smitty might be making a mistake, I just think back on how angry I felt when they drafted QB MRyan instead of drafting what I, and almost everyone else, felt was the teams biggest need, which was DT GDorsey. They made the decision to rebuild the OFF 1st, which is something none of us fans were aware of.

CB Donta Robinson is a Falcon now, so let’s move on to other issues.

WONDERDAWG-what has DFoxworth done in his 6yr to make you think he’s as good as Donta Robinson? In his last 2yrs with Denver he had a total of 6 & 5 PASSES DEFENDED respectively, with 1 & zero(0) INT’s. With the Falcons he had 11 PASSES DEF & 1 INT. Hell, in his 6 season in the NFL he hasn’t had a single season that can compare to what CB BGrimes did last yr in only 7gms as a starter.

I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND THIS LOVE AFFAIR SOME OF YOU HAVE WITH DFOXWORTH.

At this point, I see OLB as the only DEF position that will be addressed either through FA or with one of our 1st 2 picks. I’m still intrigued by the idea of us drafting an OC with our 1st pick. If TMcClure has given our staff any indication he might be considering retirement, any replacement, and longterm solution, would have to come high in the draft. Who knows, TD and Smitty might envision OLB SAdkins stepping up, like SNicholas did his 2nd yr, and challenging for a starting job, or at least providing solid relief for MPeterson during the season.

So far, the moves TD and Smitty have been made so far will ensure the success of this team for a number of yrs. I think we’re going to have a solid draft, since it’s so deep in talent at the positions we covet. I think we’ll draft and sign a FA WR, because they want to give QB MRyan a balance of youth and experience at the position. I wondering if we’ll do anything in the draft this yr about the TE position.

Man, I’d just love to see us go back to the type of backfield that featured 2 ball carrying RB’s, like LCain and WAndrews, or JBrown and BMitchell. Yes, I go waaaay back. Starting MTurner and JSnelling, and bringing in JNorwood, would give DEF’s absolute fits.

Dunta Robinson was a great get for the Falcons for numerous reasons but most importantly it puts a veterans’ presence in our secondary. If Thomas Dimitroff had waited until the draft to select Kyle Wilson from Boise State then we still would be very young and inexperienced in the secondary. I like the way the front office uses free agency very selectively but otherwise builds through the draft for the most part. Overall i feel this deal will pay off in many ways for the Falcons for starters we don’t have to spend the 19th pick in the draft on a corner.

Atlanta got an awesome cornerback. Duante is physical and smart. When he got hurt, he came back faster to help the team. We had to put him on the best receiver on every team last year and so therefore no interceptions. He was either not being throw at, or had to cover without help the main target of the other team. Plus our best safty, was a free agent picked up off the street. HE WAS ALONE UNTIL WE got Pollard. We will miss Duante and wish him well. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Lions are on the verge of a trade for Falcons CB Chris Houston.

The deal should be finalized on Monday. Atlanta is expected to receive Detroit’s sixth-round pick and switch places with the Lions in round five. Houston, the No. 41 overall selection in 2007, is immensely talented but fell out of favor last season despite starting more games than any Falcons cornerback. He is a press corner, which would fit well in Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham’s man-to-man secondary.
