Dunta Robinson set to meet with the Falcons today. (By John Wilcox/The Houston Chronicle).
Former Houston Texans’ cornerback Dunta Robinson, a native of Athens, agreed to terms on a six-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons on Friday, according to his agent Jason Chayut.
The terms of the deal were undisclosed. The Falcons are expected to make an official announcement on Saturday.
By signing Robinson, the Falcons are hoping to improve their pass defense which ranked 28th in the league last season, giving up 241.9 yards per game. The Falcons also re-signed cornerback Brian Williams to a one-year contract on Thursday.
At the NFL scouting combine last Thursday, Falcons head coach Mike Smith said that the pass defense would be improved.
“We did not play the pass as well as we’d like,” Smith said. “It’s something that we definitely have to address. Statistically we were not close to where we need to be or want to be. I think that’s twofold. One, we address the pass rush and number two, is that we improve our secondary play. Those are areas that we definitely will want to address.”
The Falcons are hoping the return of defensive tackle Peria Jerry will help improve their pass rush. The signing of Robinson clearly is designed to improve the coverage.
“That’s very important for us,” said Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff, when asked if the pass defense suffered because the rush or because of lacking coverage. “So we get Peria back and he’s healing up well and he’ll continue to solidify our defensive line. At that point, if we feel comfortable with that, we will have to seriously look at . . . there are other positions on defense as well.”
Robinson’s deal in expected to be lucrative. He turned down a contract with $23 million in guarantees last season before Houston placed the franchise tag him. Last season, he made $9.957 million after not participating in the offseason program because of the dispute over his contract.
Last season, he covered the opponent’s best receiver and played on both the right and left sides of the field.
Robinson played at Clarke Central High before going onto star at the University of South Carolina. He was the 10th player selected in the 2004 draft by the Texans.
Robinson was an immediate starter in the NFL at right cornerback, making all 16 starts as rookie.
Robinson turns 27 in April and would have to now be considered the Falcons’ No. 1 cornerback.
The Falcons finished last season with rookie Christopher Owens and second-year player Brent Grimes starting at cornerback. Chevis Jackson played in the slot. Other cornerbacks on the roster include Chris Houston, who started on the right side for most of the last three seasons, and Tye Hill, another former first round pick.
The Texans elected to let Robinson enter free agency this year. He would have commanded near $12 million for next season if they’d slapped the franchise tag on him again.

Now why is it we did not try to get Cromarti (sp?) for a 3rd round pick. Are you kiddin me or am I missing something about him. If so then I am ok with Robingson but a bigger one is out there. DOL, do you know why we passed on the San Diego corner which for the life of me I can’t spell.

No way this guy passes the Falcons filter. He has all kinds of legal problems and a kid with many (more than 2) different women. All that equals one huge distraction.

I’m cool with that signing. Yes Cromatie is out there but you gotta believe the Birds have already thought about that. Bring the kid home, so he can play in his home state. With the Williams re-signing, things are already looking better for the secondary. We get a pass rush….that D is gonna change DRASTICALLY!

Cromatie is good but Robinson is right behind him. We already don’t have a 2nd round pick – can’t see giving up a 3rd if we can get a good corner like Robinson as UFA. Even if he did go to South Carolina, he still sounds like a great pick-up, especially paired with Brian Williams. Pack your bags, Mr. Houston.

I like the fact we are signing Robinson. He had a dwn yr last yr, I felt like he wasn’t happy and when a player isn’t happy it shows on da field. If we can sign Bosch at DE we will be sitting pretty. I also like Fred Smooth as a nickle cover. I’m not a fan of Smooth, but i think he will help out at nickle, he would bring dat Prime Time swagga to da team, no he don’t cover like Dieon. How bout Randel El as da 3rd reciever. If we can sign these 4, draft a safety, watch out SuperBowl here comes da Falcons. We got youth, now we need a lil vetearn leadership to go with da youth. Remember da old 49ers approach sign guys who have 1 or 2 good yrs left to go with your youth just to make a run at da superbowl. It works, they have 4 rings. We wanna win now not 3yrs from now. EXAMPLE; Last yr everybody thought Darren Sharper was too old, look what he did for da saints secondary

Walter what a kid with more than 2 different mothers got to do with football. I can understand all da other legal issues, but da 2 babies by 2 different mothers is a bit too much, sorry everybody can’t be perfect and have kids by just one woman. I know we want to live in a perfect world, but come on man. I have 4 kids, 3 with my ex wife and 1 by my ex girlfriend. I support my kids 2 live with me and 1 live with her mom. I am very active in their lives, plus 1 is in school at GT. I’m a proud father, so get that crazy crap out your head about kids with 2 different women can be a distration….Oh did I mention that I also serve this great nation of ours and have been to Iraq 3x, but I’m still there for my family. I’m not mad just sick and tired of people looking at a athletics personal life and thinking it will play a major role in their own field role. Hey I’m not taking up for Cromatie, because he has no excuse for his off field issues. Falcon fans stop looking for perfect players.

WRT Cromartie, it’s not 2 children with 2 women – it’s 7 children with 5 women. Aside from that he’s a bad tackler and has just 5 interceptions in the last 2 years after 10 in his first. Since we don’t have a second round pick I can understand why we would not want to give up a third as well. As for whether we overpay or not for Robinson, well it is an uncapped year….

Cromartie has 7 Kids by 6 different Women in 5 different states all of which are under the age of 6. Too say he’s been spread thin over the last two disappointing seasons would be an understatement. No way the Image conscious Falcons are going anywhere near that….simple as that.
However with him going over to the Jets and playing in Rex Ryan’s system with the BEST Corner in the league in Darrelle Revis, I expect him to return close to his 2007 Pro Bowl Form. That will easily be the best CB Tandem in the League next season….WOW.
Now when it comes to Dunta Robinson, he’s a top five corner who loves to hit and plays the position with the unique confidence the position requires. He’s a playmaker plain and simple. Something the Falcons have severely lacked at that position for quite a while. I have been high on him for a number of years and always hoped that Falcons would go after him sometime. If we sign him our secondary will DRASTICALLY improve, which is the entire point of Free Agency. I couldn’t be more onboard with signing a player this offseason. GO Falcons!

Sign Robinson, Sign A Kampman from GB, Draft Weatherspoon to learn from Peterson and/ or replace Nicholas, third round end probably available, maybe we get 2nd round compensation from one or some of our RFA’s. If we can get Kampman (sp?) then Sidbury and Biermann can continue to learn and grow. Drafting a DE at 19 does not guarantee immediate and drastic change in the pass rush.

Cromartie had a very subpar year last year, so did Dunta Robinson. Cromartie has made the Pro Bowl, so has Dunta Robinson. Cromartie is supremely physically gifted, so is Dunta Robinson. Dunta Robinson has less off-field baggage and Cromartie is taller. I actually think Dunta is the better cover man and Cromartie is a better playmaker. However, he is a playmaker because he gambles in order to get interceptions, which also means he gets burned deep quite a bit. Gamblers like Cromartie and Asante Samuel are very susceptible to WRs with good double moves. Dunta will probably be cheaper and has higher character for the most part. As long as TD makes the contract “fiscally responsible,” I am all for it.

I love how some people in here are so concerned about Mr. Blanks money. It’s not your freaking money. Mr. Blank is a billionaire and I’ll bet he did not get there by throwing money away. From time to time you have to spend money to make money. So to all of you couch accountants out there give it a break. Manage your money and let the billionaires manage theirs. Some of you have so much confidence in this organization but as soon as an opportunity arises to sign a good free agent you want to count Mr. Blanks money like it’s your own. I understand comments about character and on-field abilities but I don’t understand why some of you are so concerned about getting somebody for a cheap price when not a dime of it is coming out of your pocket. Balance your check book, get your affairs in order and enjoy the fact that Atlanta FINALLY has an owner and GM that are willing to do what it takes to try to be winners. Make no mistake about it couch accountants this organization is going to have to spend some money to compete with the other 31 teams in this league.

We want the Falcons to be fiscally responsible because when you overpay for one guy and he doesn’t perform, it screws your whole team. Obviously, if we don’t have a scalary cap this year, then he can spend all he wants. But, normally if you pay one guy a boatload of money, then you have less to fill other holes. There is a reason why Tom Brady and Peyton Manning take less money than they could technically demand. They want their organization to bring in as many good players as possible. Not sign one really good guy and bring in a bunch of scrubs because he can’t pay as much money for good guys that other suitors will. That is why people worry about money.

Well if you trust the people in charge of the organization and you trust in Mr. Blank’s ability to manage and spend his own money and Mr. Dimitroff’s ability to evaluate talent, you should not worry. No one has more to loose if they do throw money away on bums and experience salary cap issues because of it than Mr. Dimitroff and Mr. Blank. However either way it’s never good for one to worry (as you put it) about someone elses money. If you have ever made any significant amounts of money in your lifetime you will be able to attest to the potential pitfalls of any large investments. Let these guys do their jobs and bring in the talent and you be the fan. Leave the money concerns to the professionals. I believe this organization gets it and wants to win the right way so relax and count your money and make sure you are being fiscally responsible because I have no doubt the leaders of the Atlanta Falcons organization will be.

Constantly in trouble. Surprisingly hasn’t gotten the attention of Goddell yet. Not at all the kind of player that Dimitrioff and Smith want in Atlanta.

If you throw all of the money at the guy at one time what is his incentive to show up for years 2 through 5??? For the organization it’s about production and a guy who’s already gotten his money up front may not be as productive going forward. Look he’s gonna command a big deal because of the state of free agency this year and his status as the best corner available in free agency but you don’t give it all to the guy up front. If Atlanta did not think they could sign Robinson without experiencing salary cap issues he would not be in Atlanta as we speak. The deal is not done and may not get done but your idea is to just throw money at the guy to perserve the salary cap and I’m saying Atlanta can sign Robinson to a nice contract without incurring any additional unecessary risk such as what you have stated. It is solely your choice to call yourself stupid and I will not agree nor disagree with your opinion.

cutter – get real. As you say, it’s Blank’s money so let him do what he wants (it’s none of your damn business). Secondly, Duante is young enough he’s going to be thinking about his next contract too. To say he’ll just piss around for 4-5 years only shows how slack and pathetic your integrity is (better to be stupid than to have no integrity), implying that’s what you’d be doing. Also, under my plan we’re in even better shape for most of that contract than under a conventional contract.
You cite me for throwing money at the guy? He’s going to get at least $8-12 mil a year anyway – so you DON’T consider that throwing money at a guy. Yeah, you’ve got a perverse sense of balance there.
And, you think you’re God’s gift to the blog and not stupid? Yeah, well you might want to proof your comments before you post, Einstein:

If someone does not agree with your decision you resort to name calling, cursing and checking for spelling errors through a blog site. OK you can call me all the names you want son. I can take it. 5 years from now how old will Robinson be?? This is his last chance at a big contract. Also since you are so good at checking for spelling errors maybe you should try to take on reading comprehension next, I did not say that he would piss away those years I asked what would be his incentive to show up. You are obviously upset because you realize your idea makes little sense especially given all of the previous capped years nobody ever thought to use your (as you say stupid ) idea. You probably think I’m god’s gift to this website but I cetainly do not. Are you an adolesent because you sound like one getting upset over words. Have a coke and a smile mommie will be home soon. Wyche is a former Falcons beat writer, so we’ve got to believe him. It doesn’t hurt, obviously, that Robinson is only negotiating with his hometown team. The terms remain up in the air, but Robinson is sure to break the bank.

Falcons agreed to terms with CB Dunta Robinson on a six-year contract.
Atlanta wasn’t happy with its CBs a year ago, and rightfully so. The club had one of the NFL’s worst pass defenses. Robinson is now signed through his age-33 season. While he’s not been a true playmaker since a six-pick rookie year, Robinson is a solid cover man with excellent range. The Texans thought enough of him to place a franchise tag on Robinson in 2009, guaranteeing him nearly $10 million. He instantly becomes the Falcons’ top cornerback.

Robinson is better than Cromartie…less headaches off the field. 6 year deal shows they may expect a cap to come back. Now DE or OLB has to be top pick….would still like to see CB in the draft as I like the kid from Rutgers. Houston may have to go to Houston as he may be the odd CB out…you agree D-Led? Center in your mock draft…really…come on…I expect us to draft offensive players, but in the 1st round, a center who would not play…not TD’s style…you go in the 1st round, you are playing, so it has to be OLB / DE.

If they go out and get a clutch receiver and some linebacker help, the Falcons have a shot. They actually can address these issues in the draft. The prerequisite for a linebacker is one that can drop back into coverage well.
If they can do that, the Falcons will win the South. (If Turner stays healthy, of course. If not, the Falcons have no shot.)

#1. Elite Run stopping corner
#2. Good but not great cover corner. Did cover the #1 receiver 60% of the time
#3. Never had a nose for the ball to get INT.
#4. Not afraid to speak his mind after a loss or losing streak. (Threw players under the bus)
#5. Will give you his all and will become a fan favorite.
Overall, I wanted him to stay in Houston. But for the $$ he was commanding and the “Pay me Rick” he put on his shoes during opening day last year, I wanted him GONE!.

I’m surprised they didn’t try to sign Darren Sharper, after seeing the kind of impact he had on the Saints’ pass defense this year, seeing as how he would have been much cheaper. Robinson is a decent player and upgrades the Falcons’ previously pathetic secondary but he’s never been some extraordinary player you can build a secondary around, like a 6-year contract would suggest. Not saying the Falcons would have got Sharper, but you would think they would at least try. I didn’t hear them linked to Sharper in any rumor.
Go Falcons!!!

I read this about him
Dunta Robinson, Houston Texans (28)
“After holding out for nearly the entire offseason, Dunta Robinson stepped in and played pretty poorly, allowing a number of intermediate catches against him. Robinson played slightly better in the second half of the season, but not in line with a top corner. With an entire offseason of workouts, Robinson can return to form and be one of the better corners in the league, but it’ll be interesting to see how the situation plays out next offseason after an up and down season this year. The Texans may not be ready to commit a lot money after this season, which could lead Dunta to test the open market. I’d be surprised if they used the franchise tag on him again this year after what they went through last season. “

You are missing the point. I am not at all worrying about Blank losing his money. I am worried about him spending it wrongly, which will disallow him and TD to make the Falcons a Super Bowl contender. And, I trust TD. For the most part, I agree with all of his moves. So, if he signs a high-priced free agent, which he was, then I believe he has done his homework and is doing the right thing. But, tying all your money up in a few big name players and leaving holes at other spots on the roster, especially as far as depth is concerned, is not how you win championships. See, Patriots, New England and Colts, Indianapolis. They pay who deserves to be paid, but never overpay.

Cornerbacks – taller does not mean better. The bigger the CB, the less likely they are to be able to turn their hips quick, change direction quickly, and close fast. If you are 6′2″ and 210 lbs, you can’t do that quickly. Ask Taylor Mays is being 6′3 230 and run a 4.3 40 makes you a great DB. I think he’ll be a fine OLB, though…..

I’m glad to have Dunta in a Falcons uniform- he can’t be any worse than what we played with last year. I’m also encouraged with the progress of Chris Owens. I want to see the Falcons go after DE Aaron Kampfmann and WR Chris Chambers. Chambers is still fast and would be a nice veteran to help offer advice to our young recievers Jenkins and White. It’s always good to bring in veterans to offer suggestions. Especially some that can challenge for your starting spot.

Now people can shut the hell up about signing Dominique Foxworth last year for basically the same amount of money. Do that and you couldn’t get Robinson THIS year without shelling out the same contract TWICE.
Besides, even “smurf” Grimes had more INTs than Foxworth had last year? Surprised? I’m not.
I like this move, and it’s clear these guys want to win NOW, as well as in the future. However, don’t be surprised if you see another CB coming in the draft. One of those raw ones with SIZE.
In the meantime, the dynamic changes in the first round of the draft. A pass rusher is surely coming. Will it be an OLB or a DE? Don’t rule out DT. We still don’t know that we can stay completely healthy and we suffered from it (as did our DEs) last year. Why? Because Babineaux was the only reliably good DT we had. Thomas Johnson filled in decently when JA98 wasn’t in there, stinking it up…

Two points:
Dunta Robinson had 10 picks his first year and only 5 the last 2 seasons, but teams throw at him less and are more leery of throwing at a guy after he gets 10 picks as a rookie. Revis does not get all that many picks either. Dunta will help a lot.
AND
Despite what you Dawg fans and many others think, Tebow will be very successful in the NFL.
Of course he has a couple things to works on as do all rookies, especially QBs do, but truly, the more negative stuff written, the more determined he will be.
In short, Tebow is the Anti-Vick

Dunta’s coming to the ATL with an attitude! It’s his way or the highway–but pay him first!

Teachers zero. Robinson 9-10 million dollars per year. He got a raise and the teachers took a walk. Fair huh? why don’t we pay our fireman, policeman ahd soldiers these types of salaries. Why aren’t we hollering at our government officials to pay these millios to each of the above individuals. Don’t you think they do a good enough job. They all put their lives on the line daily. Many of them run for touchdowns or hit homeruns in their daily duties. Its a given that we couldn’t afford to pay the taxes that it would take to pay them. When ar e we the fans going to wake up that we are paying for the salaries of these pros one way or the other. Attendance at games, buying their product, listening to their games etc is costing you. Wake up fans. Our economy is in the dumpster. we need to spend our money more prudently in order to create an environment for our children and grandchildren. If you can’t live without pro sports, watch or attend college games Just as good if not better. I firmly believe that pro sports will destroy themselves unless they make drastic changes. When players leave teams because 15-20 million dollars a year is not enough, for them to take care of their families, we should take collections for them. We have created a bunch of selfish, uncaring athletes who are no more important to our survival than the people mentioned above. The owners are not different. they live off the monies received from attendance, parking and television. They are in it to make money. If this continues, we will be denying our children and grandchildren pro sports in the future. It has drastically change since I was a kid. Not for the better either.

I’ve been disappointed by the Falcons too many times. I would not pin any hope on JERRY. He was a fat bust when they drafted him and will never live up to the expectation that was believed in him. The Falcons need to draft for his position and think trade for Jerry.

New Falcons CB Dunta Robinson cashed in with Atlanta. He signed a six-year, $57 million contract that includes $25.5 million in guarantees.

Robinson should get some interceptions since he’s way overdue. I had as many interceptions as he did last year.

One thing you Atlanta fans may not be getting the full scoop on is that Robinson suffered a horrific injury during the 2007 season. In a game against the Raiders, a Texans DT ran into Robinson’s knee during a tackle and tore Robinson’s ACL. The injury also caused his hamstring to be ripped completely off his bone. Robinson is a very tough player who is great at playing the run, but he has not been the same player since he suffered that injury. Perhaps he will return to form after spending a full training camp with the team (he boycotted training camp last year because he was unhappy with being tagged as a franchise player), but recognize that the Falcons are taking a risk signing a player who may never be as good as he was before he got hurt. No doubt the severity of the injury was a factor in the Texans’ decision not to re-sign him.

He will be 2 years removed from his very major ACL/hammy injury, which is normally how long it take to fully recover physically and also with the confidence. That is a very big deal they gave him. Let’s hope they are right.

The secondary is starting to look a lot better now with Robinson. We get PJ back for next year and that will boost the pass rush considerably. Add in a 1st round DE or OLB from this years draft and this D is going to be really good.

Hey DOL, won’t Brian Williams be the starter alongside Dunta? Williams was doing really good last year before the injury. Then Owens/Grimes/Tye Hill will be backups and Chris Houston might be a goner. Unless I’m missing something? Nobody seems to be talking about Williams.

“Pay me, Rick.” (Classy.)
That said, the guy will improve our secondary. I was hoping we could land VanDen Bosch to play opposite Abraham on the D-Line, but alas, no go. I do like our cornerback setup a lot more, though, with Robinson and Williams resigning and Grimes still in the fold.

When will the Falcons’ Brass ever get it thru their thick skull that you build a teaam from the inside out, not the reverse.
It won’t matter if they have 10 Deion Sanders in the backfield…if you don’t have any pressure upfront then its a Dback can only cover for so long.
Heck, with the money they gave non-pro bowler in D Robinson, they could’ve added another 15mil and got a consistent probowler in Julius Peppers.
The Falcons Front Office is stupid.
TD will still try and put start rookies on the frontline this season, only left with trying toreplace them next year. Plus there’s no guarantee that Peria will recover from his knee injury, nor W.Moore or Robinson for that matter.
Stupid-Stupid-Stupid!
