NFL combine: Smitty was checking his gadget for 40 times

Indianapolis — On Saturday, Falcons coach Mike Smith was shown on the NFL Network and appeared to be nodding off.

Smith said he was looking down at his phone to read some of the 40-yard dash times.

He then showed off his cool blackberry and told about how the Falcons’ technology department has all of the coaches’ phones wired up to receive instant 40 times from staff members who are timing the players from different areas in the Lucas Oil Stadium.

Too much is said about the combine results. The 40 is the most abused. Many with great 40 numbers failed miserably in the NFL. Fast and that was the end of the story. Put together all the stats and you still do not have the whole picture of hte athlete. Media has nothing better to do, so they make like it is the biggest event ever and of course the polite coaches and GMs go along.

Tom must have never run a sub 5.0 40……lmao.

Tom – we all know the 40 is the most glamorous of the combine events….equivalent to the 100 meters in the Olympics. I seriously doubt an NFL team is only putting stock in a 40 time alone. Stop being so hateful and post something positive….or just don’t post at all.

The combine coverage is cool, but I have so much confidence in the falcons ability to scout now, I am not as into it as before. TD does a really good job of grabbing talent. Here is a list of good picks so far, at least in my opinion: Matt Ryan, Thomas DeCoud, Curtis Lofton, Chaveous Jackson, Christopher Owens, Beer Man, Sidbury, Garrett Reynolds. He also brought in Tony Gonzales, Burner Turner, and Mike Peterson. Got rid of Michael Boley and Brookings, who didn’t fit Smitty’s process.

Don’t mess with Smitty. At least I won’t. He guards his players like a lion. Go Smitty, and GO FALCONS!.

TD and Smitty give nothing away, they show only what they want the competition to see and they keep us in suspense, it seems to work as we are hanging on every word to figure what direction they are going to take us. GO FALCONS-GO SOUTHERN RUSH.

I am sure Smitty and Mr.D understand the evaluation process pretty well. The event is called a Combine for a reason but only film and interviews along with conversations with coaches can determine heart. I also agree with the other poster about negative comments as I read up on almost all sports; I see childish personal remarks, immature ‘first’ post and other enjoyable activities. People please stop these things. For those like myself it is a waste of time and take away the pleasure of the Blog. I am an avid Bulldog fan but I cheer for the other schools in the state to be successful and all the athletic representatives from our state. Coach Bear Bryant said,’Work hard, have integrity and show class and success will follow’.

Tom, looks like you’re the target of hateful postings. I tend to agree that the NFL Combine is a bit over-hyped. It’s on TV and can sell ad dollars, so why not hype it? I’m glad I have the access to it and it is interesting, but I also understand that it is only a part of the evaluation process.
