Indianapolis — Troy defensive end Brandon Lang, of Tucker High, talked about his recruitment by the University of Georgia and how he almost was a Bulldog.
Lang measured 6-foot-3 and weighed-in at 266 pounds.
Here’s some Lang from Saturday.
Q: Was the SAT your issue coming out?
A: Yes. I originally signed with the University of Georgia. I was recruited heavily by Florida, Auburn, Tennessee,
basically all of the SEC, some ACC and some Big 12 (schools).
Q: How did you end up at Troy?
A: Larry Blakeney. A great head coach down at Troy. Love him to death. He got me to come down there. He’s family oriented. His relationship with his players is not just a coach and player relationship. He gets to know you on a personal level. That really meant a lot to me.
Q: Did the success of Osi Umenyiora and DeMarcus Ware have anything to do with it?
A: No, not really. They are their own person. They had to work hard to get to where they are at. I just plan on doing the same thing.
Q: Where do you fit best, in a 3-4 or a 4-3?
A: I’ve been projected to play both, but I haven’t really got into all of that. We’ll start that today. We did a lot of dropping back in (coverage) in our system at Troy.
Q: What happened at Georgia? They didn’t admit you. . . how did that whole thing go down. Could you clear that up.
A: Coming out of high school I didn’t qualify academic wise. So they sent me to a prep school in Chatham, Virginia. Hargrave Military Academy. I spent a semester there and then I transferred to Troy. I didn’t have the SATs.
Q: Why did you leave Hargrave before the semester was completed?
A: I was just tired of taking the SAT. After so many times that you take it you just want to move on and take another route. It worked out well for me.
