Mobile — Falcons safety Thomas Decoud, a first-year starter, got some league-wide recognition on Wednesday when he was named to USA Today’s 18th annual All-Joe team.
Players on the team are picked for their high level of play. However, it’s required that they cannot have made the Pro Bowl. It’s sort of the lunch pail, up-and-comers team.
DeCoud, a third round pick from the University of California in 2008, was a special teams maven as a rookie.
Last season, he moved into the starting free safety position and Erik Coleman slid over to the strong safety spot.
DeCoud showed great range in coverage and striking ability while tackling.
He finished with 113 tackles (73 solo), two sacks for a loss of 18 yards, three tackles for loss, three quarterback hurries, three interceptions, seven passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
The USA Today article read, “Second-year player took over as a starter and showed dynamic ability. He can hit, cover and blitz, a perfect package for a young free safety.”

Good year for DeCoud, he will be able to grow and have confidence to be even better for us down the road.
I am interested to see what William Moore will give us this year after injury.

D.O.L- Where did you get your info on the number of tackles??? Atlantafalcons.com and NFL.com credit him with 68 combined tackles. 57 solo and 11 assisted.

DeCoud grew a lot this year. I am really interested to see him compete with the return of the injured guys. The Falcons are beginning to do a better job of evaluating talent and forcing higher levels of internal competition.
When will the AJC change the forum to be Last in First listed so that we can get rid of this ignorant I’m First garbage? – get a freakin life people

Ueeediot- Anyone who would even give crap about someone typing “first” must be missing a freakin life of their own. I’ve never did the I’m first thing but only a true idiot would get upset about other people doing it.

The fact that we have Harry Douglas, Paria Jerry, and William Moore coming back in addition to the 6-8 (account for possible trading) 2010 draft picks, Decoud, Lofton, Matt Ryan etc. The Falcons have to be considered one of the very best young teams in the NFL. As a 30-year fan and season ticket holder it is very nice to have a great core with some already-realized potential!
Glad Dimitroff buys into the belief you build through the draft.
Side ?: anyone notice how very, very old the Saints secondary is going to be very soon?
Go Colts!

With DeCoud on his way to being a great safety and with Moore coming back, the Falcons need to concentrate on cornerback and d-line. Either get a free agent or draft for the #1 corner, and the others they have will work out fine (minus C.Houston). For the d-line, DE is the position of need now.
GO FALCONS!!!

I agree the First thing is the most annoying part about reading the comments. Cutter should know that tackles aren’t an official NFL stat, they are kept by whoever is counting, so I’m sure whoever you ask will have a different answer for you.
On to the reason we are here – DeCoud was a welcome surprise in a season otherwise filled with turmoil. Hopefully he can continue to grow. Makes you wonder what to do with William Moore now. DeCoud and Coleman are both young. Maybe we could trade someone and get our second round pick back this year??? Its a deep draft and we could sure use another high round pick for a DE or RB (assuming we go for a LB in first round).

D. Led, any truth to the rumors that San Diego is shopping CB Antonio Cromartie and that Atlanta is in the mix as one of the potential trade partners?

Craig- I assume you have the ability to comprehend what you read. The official Atlanta Falcons website has Decoud tackle total at 68. Are you D.O.L. if not you should only open your mouth when I put my hand on the back of your head.

I like Antonio Cromartie . . . I think the Falcons should look into that possibility. We can at least see if he has an upside or has been limited by the players around him

Wow! He is such a stud. He moves so easily sliding in and out of all those tackles. He is my hero. Good job Thomas. I hope that the Claremont reopens soon so that we can hang loose there again sometime.

Orlando’s bowtie is making me crazy. That is quite a fashion statement. The best statement of 2010 I would say. Does he and Mike Woodson shop at the same stores? Do they share a one bdr flat in midtown? The public wants to know.

Look,
I really think we need to Draft a left Tackle if a 1st round Caliber Left Tackle is available..
I get hurt easily and I am not good enough to protect Matt’s Blindside.
Wait, Maybe I can be the Waterboy? They do not require you to get hit as the Waterboy do they? I don’t know if I would like it if I got hit, I might get hurt and then I couldn’t Waterboy… Maybe I can try Right Tackle if they bring in a real Left Tackle.. oops, I just broke a nail, That is it.. I can’t work out today, If I break two nails I might cry.

This was right on by USA Today…DeCoud needs to hit the weights hard this offseason though. I just don’t know if his frame can withstand the pounding that he forces on it.
Cromartie would be a nice additon. A real NFL cornerback. But who would we give up? Norwood maybe?

Great for DeCoud but come on DOL. Give us something from the Senior Bowl. You are a great sports writer but this is boring.

Good to see Decoud getting some props and hopefully our D can build upon him as he continues to develop. Gotta root for the Saints as a lifelong Falcons fan. The city needs and deserves something to feel good about. Plus, we get to play and potentially beat them 3 times every year. Thus, you have to beat the best to be the best. Hopefully, they’ll win and push our Falcons to want to take their place next year. Much like the Falcons(and Braves pre 91′ or so), they’ve been bad for so long that it’s good to see them be good for a change.
Falcor, nice post except for the Go Colts part. Go Saints, Go Falcons and GO DAWGS!!!

We need to get either Carlos rogers or Chromartie in free agency, and focus on getting a DE,OlB,OT,RB,WR throught the draft.
Its time for Norwood, houston,Anderson,TLewis and Finneran to names of the past
