Roddy White is doing back flips on his second consecutive Pro Bowl trip.
UPDATED after talking to Coach Mike Smith at the Senior Bowl
Mobile – Falcons wide receiver Roddy White was added to the NFC Pro Bowl roster on Tuesday.
He replaces Minnesota wide receiver Sidney Rice, who has withdrawn from the game.
This will be White’s second straight Pro Bowl appearance.
“I’m excited to be heading back to the Pro Bowl for a second year,” White said ina statement released by the team. “My teammates played a huge part in my success this year and I have to credit them as well.”
White, who started the season by holding out for six days in training camp, has his third consecutive 1,000-yard receiving season. After his brief holdout, White signed a six-year, $50 million contract extension with the team.
White led the Falcons in receiving yards with 1,153 on 85 receptions and became the second receiver in franchise history to have three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. White had a career-high 11 touchdowns.
“It’s good for Roddy,” said Falcons coach Mike Smith after watching the South practice at the Senior Bowl. “He’ll get down there and get an opportunity to reap the benefits and rewards of a good season.”
Last season, White moved into fourth place on the Falcons all-time receiving yardage list with 4,689 career yards. He passed Jim Mitchell who totaled 4,410 receiving yards in 11 seasons with Atlanta.
“I think Roddy is one of the more well-respected receivers in the league,” Smith said. “To have back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances only bodes well for him in the future.”
The Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday at Sun Life Stadium in Miami.

Perrish Cox has interviewed with the Falcons and wants to come to Atlanta.
Mobile – Mastering the art of the “hotel lobby hang” is key to the Senior Bowl trip.
After blogging about Tim Lewis joining the coaching staff, covering practice, writing the notebook and going to media day, it was time to do the lobby hang.
It’s good to let your badge show so that people know you’re from the newspaper and that you’re not a scout or an unemployed coach looking for work.
You must find a spot off to the side where you can scan the entire room.
Then just try to look as cool as you can.
You see some of your longtime your sources, some folks see the badge and others just come up and provide information.

One agent I’d met last year came up and started chatting. He wanted to make sure I knew what players he’d signed. He also noted the local agent Todd France was having a really big season and then offered up some possibly valuable draft information.
“I’ll tell you what,” the agent said. “He’s not even my client, but I know the Falcons love that big kid over there (pointing). Perrish Cox, the cornerback from Oklahoma State.”
Now, I’m interested.
The NFL Network’s Mike Mayock had already alerted me to him, Florida State’s Patrick Robinson and Southern California’s Taylor Mays as possible first round defensive backs on the South team. Mays is a safety.
“So, Cox in the first round for the Falcons?,” I asked the agent.
“He won’t be there in the second,” the agent said. “And he’s not my guy.”
Unsolicited, the agent said, “He’s got three kids.”
Everybody knows the Falcons are looking for so-called “good character” players in the post-Michael Vick era. You can’t indict a guy for starting a family early, but the Falcons will want to know more about his family.
So the Falcons might have to do a thorough background check on Cox, who was also suspended for the Cotton Bowl. e apparently missed curfew by 30 minutes and fell out with head coach Mike Gundy.
Last season, the Falcons passed on Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis because of his “character” issues. He was selected one pick after they took Peria Jerry. He went on to have a fine rookie season with the Dolphins and made several all-rookie teams.
Cox is 6-foot and 190 pounds and went against touted receiver Dez Bryant in practice every day. (You know, until he got suspended.) He’s also an accomplished returner.

Jerry Glanville
THE MAN IN BLACK: Former Falcons coach Jerry Glanville comes over and is talking to a scout I know. He saw the badge!!!
He speaks and I introduce myself.
“Having some fun down there now,” Glanville said. “That QB (Matt Ryan) can play. They need some corners though. When I had Deion (Sanders) everybody thought I could coach cornerbacks.”
THE TUESDAY PLAN: The North team practices at 10:30 a.m. My buddy Geoff Hobson went to the North practice on Monday. It was held at the same time as the South practice at Ladd-Peeples. The South was 15 miles away in Fairhope. I had to go to the South practice.
“Butch” Hobson told me that Detroit wide receiver coach Shawn Jefferson (former Falcons great) went ballistic on the receivers. Missouri’s Danario Alexander caught Jefferson’s ire, while he praised Clemson’s Jacoby Ford.
The South squad goes at 2:45 p.m.
The head coaches — Jim Schwartz and Tony Sparano — hold press conferences at 6:30 p.m. We can ask Sparano why he’s being a jerk about not letting his assistant coaches talk to the media about the players they are coaching. That information could really help out some kids. Probably some stupid Bill Parcells rule. Hope I get the first question at the press conference. “Coach what’s the rationale behind the decision to not let your coaches talk at AN ALL-STAR GAME?”

Good blog, thanks. Three kids could be a problem, unless he’s married. If it’s three out of wedlock, especially if there is more than one mother, that indicates a lack of responsible behavior. Don’t draft no Travis Henry though.

Great information, D-Led. I hope you do get the chance to ask Tony Sparano about that stupid policy.
I think Perrish Cox is a great athlete and will do well in the NFL. I’m just not sold on a corner being the Falcons’ first-round draft pick. But then, that’s what Arthur Blank pays Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith to decide – not me.

Great information, D. Orlando. You are the man! Unlike Sparano, who is obviously a little man with a Napoleonic complex. These kids need coaches talking about them to the media even if they don’t have three kids to feed. Falcons need players on defense. They can talk all they want about upstanding guys of strong character — and keep getting torched with our 30th ranked secondary. Or they can find some talent with good character. I don’t particularly care but the fact is what we have didn’t work too well so I say give Cox a chance if he’s there. A 6 foot, athletic corner is certainly what we need as Grimes is at best a d-back for nickel situations only while we will live with Chris Houston only if we have to.

Character is one of those words that is put into the media largely for PR.Sure it’s on the list but the emphasis comes on the importance to the position. IE. How possible is it for this player to publically embarass the team. DT’s not so much. Corners slightly more… QB’s… oh brother.

If Falcons can’t land Mcclain, Morgan, Spiller or D Bryant, they need to slide down to pick up Robinson or Cox at end of 1st/beginning of 2nd, and use addl pick on best available OLB (weatherspoon or norwood). Moving down the board is always a challenge though. OT opposite Baker is also a concern, RG may end being one as well. They’ll need to start thinking about grooming a new TE now too.

What is it with those who remain obcessed with the BFarve trade and MVick, although the AJC won’t let anything related to MVick rest. Some of these clowns act like not trading a bench warming, boozing, partying Farve, who did absolutely nothing while he was a Falcon, would have some how completely changed the fortunes of this franchise. Hell, even the fact BFarve has publically stated his career would have likely gone nowhere had he stayed with the Falcons and not been traded to Green Bay, doesn’t seem to get through to these clowns.
Yet, dispite all of this, we still get these stupid comments about the trade, like it would have actually made a difference to the Falcon franchise. GET OVER IT!
There’s no way TD or Smitty can think a rookie CB drafted 19th or 20th could have more impact on our overall pass DEF than a DLineman or LB that can improve our pass rush. Those fans who weren’t blind, stupid, or crazy were able to witness the unbelievable improvement in the performance of our CB’s the last 6-7 gms of the season compared to the earlier part. It all coinsided with the sudden ability of our young, quick, fast DT’s to push the interior pocket, which prevented the QB from stepping up into it, which limited their reads and forced them to make quick, errant throws.
As a result, the same so called UNDERSIZED, UNDERACHIEVING CB’s that Falcon fans were blaming for everything wrong with our poor pass DEF, were suddenly able to perform at a Probowl level and make play after play on the ball. Character issues or not, we need to improve our pass rush before considering any improvement at CB.

Here we go again…
Last year, this time, we all shared our thoughts and opinions about our needs. We all knew that defense was a priority fix. Some wanted Ziggy Hood, some wanted Patrick Chung and some even wanted Vontae Davis. After we grabbed Gonzo the Great from K.C. (personally, I wanted Brandon Pettigrew), I would have settled for Louis Delmas for our first round pick. Nevertheless, we ended up with Hip Hip Peria and I cannot be evermore pleased (despite his loss to injury). What’s startling about the aforementioned players, is that they were all drafted after Atlanta’s pick-up of Jerry; and they all had fine rookie seasons (Pettigrew was lost to injury). Some of you are still apathetic to drafting a DB for our first pick, when last year’s backs (Malcolm Jenkins, Davis and Delmas) were excellent starters.
Considering that quality (starters) defensive linemen will be long gone by the time the Falcons pick first, I would suggest that we strongly consider linebacker or cornerback for our first selection; and shop for a defensive tackle via free agency (yes, I’m on the Vince Wilfork bandwagon). After Joe Haden, I don’t think that there is a quality starter at cornerback; however, this draft is loaded with linebackers that could solidify our front seven (with Wilfork in the middle). Sergio Kindle, Sean Witherspoon or Eric Norwood are all eventual starters and two out of these three should be available in the late first or early second round. If we can, somehow, trade our first round pick for a late first-round pick and a second round pick, I think we can get that quality linebacker and a good cornerback in the second round (a Patrick Robinson or Parrish Cox). Again (and I agree with Ken), our defensive success is dependent on the front four but Suh, McCoy and Morgan may be gone when we pick. Our safest picks would be Witherspoon, Norwood, Robinson or Cox.

The ones who are critical about the Favre trade, you should listen to Brett himself. He said in an interview years ago before the playoff game between GB and ATL “I don’t blame them for trading me – I was terrible…”.
Our opinions are about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. With that said – here’s my opinion….
I agree with those who say we need help on OL and DL. However there’s a school of thought that say if you have shutdown corners it opens up options including 8 in the box. Not sure there’s a right and wrong on this – just differing philosophies.
For those who are critical of Glanville, I liked him as a coach and our offense was among the top in scoring and yards per game. Defensively he brought a hard hitting swarming defense back to Atlanta but wasn’t consistent and therefore lived and died by the blitz.
Go Falcons!

Perrish Cox would be a strong choice if the Falcons were to go CB. He shut down AJ Green (4rec. 52yds). Danario Alexander torched the OSU secondary in the 1st half of the Mizzou game but he helped hold him to 19yds in the 2nd half. FYI–anybody not named Nebraska or Texas got torched by Danario (6′5″, 215) he’s a beast. Markques Simas gave him some problems (11rec. 90yds 1TD) and Hodge for Ole Miss pulled in a 100yd+ day but the offense had 6 TOs in the 4th qtr alone. All-in-all he has alot of the attributes some of our CBs (meaning Chris Houston) lacked. He a taller, athletic CB w/ speed (handled both KO & PR duties exclusively after Dez Bryant was ruled ineligible) that gets his head around & plays the ball.
As to the issue of his character; being an athletic, young, promiscuous male is nothing new. In fact, it is quite natural. The problem (and primary issue of concern) is and should be whether is negligent in his responsibilities towards the woman (women) and children.
With all of the above having been stated, I think Brian Williams status injury-wise (knee-rehab) and whatever the probability of him (he is now a FA) being signed to a new contract, will go a long way towards determining whether they draft a CB in the 1st.

I know for a fact that they preferred going to Hawaii. And playing the game before the Super Bowl has to be the biggest blunder the NFL has made this year….dont be surprised if it goes back to the week after the Super Bowl. Stirg, My fish n’ grits brother, IMO we need to get a legitimate LT. The draft is loaded with LB’s that can learn from Peterson. Some stats: We were 19th in the league running behind RT vs 21st running behind Baker. Baker gave up more sacks +2 than Clabo (in fewer games) and he’s a #1 LT that cannot stay healthy? Move the short arm baker and cement our line( at least OT) with a true left tackle. Our 2 picks in the 3rd can get OLB and CB. The 4th can bring our next center/TE/RB/WR, whatever. Our only starter for 2010 will come from the 1st rd and I think our biggest need/result will be LT. Just my .02 buddy.
