UPDATE

Tuesday night

Longtime Falcons assistant coach Emmitt Thomas‘ contract was not renewed by the team.

“Everyone here in the Falcons organization has the utmost respect for Emmitt and we deeply appreciate his contributions to our team over the years,” Falcons head coach Mike Smith said on Tuesday night. “We wish Emmitt the best in his future endeavors.”

Thomas, who served as the assistant head coach/secondary for the last two seasons under Smith, had served as an assistant under the last four coaches.

Thomas first joined the Falcons in 2002 under former head coach Dan Reeves.

He was responsible for keeping the team together when Bobby Petrino left during the 2007 season. He was selected to serve as the interim head coach.

Last season, the defense finished 28th in the league against the pass.

When Smith was named the head coach, one of his first decisions was to retain Thomas and promote him to assistant head coach/secondary.

Last season was Thomas’ 42nd in the league. He played for 13 years and has coached for 29 seasons.

Thomas was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August of 2008.

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons coach Mike Smith and general manager Thomas Dimitroff gave their state of the team addresses on Monday.

Both were asked by WSB Channel 2’s Zach Klein to name their MVPs for the season.

Both picked tight end Tony Gonzalez as their offensive MVP. Dimitroff elected to award him a “game ball.”

Smith picked second-year safety Thomas DeCoud and defensive most valuable player.  Dimitroff picked second-year middle linebacker Curtis Lofton.

Smith noted that offseason weight training program will start on March 24. The organized team activities will start on April 1 followed by the mini-camp in the second week of May.

ROSTER MOVE: Defensive lineman Dan Klecko, son of former New York Jets’ great Joe Klecko, was signed to a reserve/future contract by the Falcons on Monday.

Klecko was selected by New England in the fourth round of the 2003 draft. He’s played with New England and Indianapolis. While he’s played some fullback, the Falcons consider him a defensive lineman.

BASEMENT WRITING CAVE — It will be interesting when Falcons owner Arthur Blank, general manager Thomas Dimitroff and head coach Mike Smith speak to the media today around 3 p.m.

Coach Smith will do his season-in-review and provide offseason medical updates for the 13 players on injured reserve and practice squad – injured.

Dimitroff is set to lay out the Falcons offseason personnel retention and acquisition framework. This will be quirky considering the league’s labor situation.

Mr. Blank will give his state of the union address from the ownership perspective.

So, while we are waiting for updates from Flowery Branch, let’s look back on my Five Highlights from last season. Feel blog RYAN NEfree to add your own. Posting back-to-back winning seasons is the overall theme for the season, not a singular highlight.

5. Defensive end John Abraham tossing Miami’s Jake Long to the turf. After the way he man-handled Long, you just thought Abraham was in for another big monster season.

4. The run defense down the stretch. The run defense held the Bills to 40 yards rushing and then held the Buccaneers to 38 in the season finale. The run defense finished ranked 10th in the league.

3. Michael Turner’s 158-yard rushing game against Washington. He had a 58-yard touchdown run and you sensed at 5-3, he was ready to power the Falcons back to the playoffs in the second half of the season. He would suffer a high right ankle sprain the following week against Carolina.

2. Roddy White’s 210 yards receiving against San Francisco. He was going against Nate Clements, the $80 million man. He scored on touchdowns of 31 and 90 yards. “Roddy had a huge game out in San Francisco,” quarterback Matt Ryan said. “One of the things that sticks out from that game for me was the 90-yard touchdown that he had. He made a great catch against press coverage. It was really unbelievable. That was  fun to see him out there really dominating a game.”

Roddy White had another 1,000-yard receiving season.

Roddy White had another 1,000-yard receiving season.

1. The touchdown drive against the New York Jets. Ryan, playing in his first game back after suffering his turf toe injury, drove the Falcons 73 yards in 11 plays for the game-winning touchdown, a 6-yard pass to Tony Gonzalez. It was the team’s only victory over a team with a winning record. “That was a great drive for us,” Ryan said. “That was a great win for us up there.”

Don’t forget Redman to White with no time left on 4th and goal. This is a turn around game to have back to back winning season.

D-Led I agree with your 5 and many of the others that have also been mentioned by the bloggers. Another highlight for me this year will be that it has ended and HOPEFULLY next year’s AJC Falcons articles WILL NOT continue to have conversations and dialog about Vick. He’s gone from Atlanta and will soon be gone from Philadelphia.

Great finish!! Esp with all those injuries. To have a winning season and be banged up on both sides of the ball said alot. What we now know is are back up will be better and they have extensive playing time now. We should be ready for next season GO FALCONS!!!!

The article with AB, TD and MS was nothing but sportsspeak. Sure wish they’d promote “WINNING THE DIVISION” over just “making the playoffs.”

Looking forward to a great 2010 season where Vick is even more irrelevant.

That has happened to Jake Long on more than a few occasions this year. Makes you wonder what Pro Bowl criteria is.

Falcons are already better heading into next season, assuming Williams, Douglas, Jerry, Moore, Ryan, Norwood, and Turner come back healthy. This is a young team (except TE and C) that should get better, not regress. To be a serious playoff force they need: (1) pass rushing DE and OLB, (2) a reliable placekicker, and (3) improved O-line play against the top teams and pass rushers (may need another stud OL). Other areas of need: additional depth at tailback, another playmaking wideout, sustained emergence of one of the young corners. They need to add another legitimate speed and receiving threat in the backfield to challenge the edges without those risky end-around calls.

The drive against the Jets was definitely the top highlight. After the way the Falcons have folded and imploded embarassingly in past seasons witnessing such a demonstration of team character against a hungry playoff team was truly inspirational.

At 4 and 1 early on, I was optimistic. But when we lost the best running back in the NFC, I became realistic. I was very proud of Roddy all season, for staying tough and clutch. The defence became a true force at the end of the season, and helped injured Matty Ice break the dread curse. GO FALCONS in 2010

As far as a fast and versatile receiving threat, we’ve got one as long as Harry Douglas can return to health.

He is an unrestricted Free Agent if the labor union and owners agree to a salary cap. If theres no cap he will be a restricted FA and Dallas will sign him long term

Glad he didn’t make it.

NFL LABOR STRIFE
: One thing I think I “under played” in the Q & A with Blank, TD & Smitty is that Blank stated that owners and the union are meeting weekly with hopes of reaching a deal by March 1st. Free agency would then start on March 5.

Questions to determine off season direction–anybody with answers

A. Health of Abraham, Jerry, and Moore. (DOL: Nothing wrong with Abraham. You know, physically. Jerry’s knee wasn’t a reconstruction so that was good news. Expected back for OTAs, training camp at latest. Moore is close to good health, too.)

B. Is the rookie tackle(Reynolds?) capable of being a starter? (DOL: As you know he played at GUARD over the final three games. He’s certainly being groomed by Boudreau to be a starter. Don’t know if he’s be ready next season. His future is probably at right tackle.)

C. What outside linebackers are available in free agency? (DOL: Won’t have a final list until the labor situation is settled. Shawne Merriman would be the biggest name if a deal is reached.)

D. Will Babs be suspended and for how long? (DOL: More than likely. He could get just 1 game as a first-time offender under the league’s substance abuse policy.)

E. Can Sidbury or Bierman start in the NFL? (DOL: They both need to add some bulk in order to hold up against the run. Biermann’s 260, Sidbury 265 and Abe is 263. The offseason is big for Sidbury, who had a tougher time than Biermann making the jump up from I-AA to the NFL.)

How about a nod to the fan base. No black-outs all year, despite the economy. Living in the Jacksonville viewing area has made me realize how great a fan base we have.

I think one of my favorite Falcons, Jason Snelling, rumbling for 150+ could have cracked that top 5. I’ve liked that guy since his first pre-season. He does a lot of things well, showed it over the season, finished with a heavy load on his shoulders, and carried the 9-7 home. Clutch play! Norwood could fall apart any time (I think he already has), but Snelling is a keeper. If Matt Ryan continues to develop with his considerable offense, and the defense improves in the way that Smith and Dimitrioff lead me to believe it will; we could (heaven forbid) roll with Snelling for a full year if something happened to Turner again. Who were those two guys sharing the ball in Jacksonville again, back when Smith was there? It’s the same here. Everybody praise Jason Snelling, we got stable maker in him!

I wonder if theres no cap would it be a “Free-for-all” I’m sayin that with sarcasim. Between Jerry Jones, Daniel Snyder, Paul Allen- He is the richest owner afterall. Plus will Blank compete for premier free agents. Will he go after Leigh Bodden, Richard Seymore, Karlos Dansby, Casey Hampton, I doubt Wilfolk will be available with that potential Franchise tag, Ryan Clark, Dunta Robinson, Adewale Ogunleye, Kyle VandenBosch, Julius Peppers, I personally think we will be in play for many of these free agents and if we can sign some of these guys the off-season will be a sucess if you count the draft picks and the returns of Harry Douglas Peria Jerry and William Moore. What is your opinion some of these potentail moves Mr. Ledbetter? Baseball shouldn’t have the only hotstove league.

Wow, that comes as a bit of a surprise about Emmitt Thomas, especially after hearing Mike Smith talk about keeping the coaching staff together at yesterday’s press conference.

[...] Even in the off-season, this is a team that doesn’t like to take a lot of time off. Proof? They went out and signed former New England Patriot Dan Klecko Monday. [...]

My hope is that Emmit Thomas takes a college job, either head coach or defensive coordinator. He’s a good coach, a Hall-of-Famer, and the kids could benefit from his experience.

But I don’t think he will be unemployed for long.
