Did Pro Bowl voters stick it to the Falcons?
10:06 am December 30, 2009, by D. Orlando Ledbetter

Tony Gonzalez dunks after a touchdown against Chicago.
THE BRANCH – Were the Falcons robbed in the NFC “Chicago Style” Pro Bowl voting?
Yes.
At the very least, tight end Tony Gonzalez should have made it. You can make cases for wide receiver Roddy White, linebackers Curtis Lofton and Michael Peterson and defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux.
Free safety Thomas DeCoud, who knocked three players out of games with his big-hitting, turned in a good season and has to be the next season’s “Pro Bowl Watch List.”
Got a couple of theories on what happened:
- Winning helps. The Falcons are 8-7 and only overpowered one team this season, San Francisco.
- The offense and defense are not ranked in the top half of the league. The offense is ranked 17th overall and the defense is ranked 23rd. The Falcons are 12th in the all important points category (22.9) and tied for 10th in turnover differential at plus-4.
- The Falcons were under-whelming in their prime time television games. They beat the Bears 21-14 on Sunday night, but didn’t rack up many style points. They lost to the Saints on Monday Night in a thrilling 35-27 game, but you never sensed that had control of that game.
- Fill in your theory right here!

It is typical. All it takes is to watch the games. The refs allow our opponents to play tighter coverage on our receivers but don’t even think about allowing our defenders to do the same. Example, in the first Saints game, Roddy White was “tackled” in the endzone with the ball in the air and he still almost caught the pass and of course no flag was thrown, but then Mike Peterson and Reggie Bush both jump up for a pass well over both of their heads and because they bumped into each other, a flag was thrown and the Saints are given a first down. The Falcons are doing all they can and do not deserve the snubs.

The final selection must have been made by NFL referees because this call seems as good as the many “fair calls” the Falcons have received from the refs in 2009.
I think we need new uniforms because it’s obvious that refs can’t see when a red jersey is being held and interfered with.

Tony deserves the Pro Bowl. His catches are on pace with what he’s always averaged. Holy Cow, he made it ten times as a Chief. No respect was shown to Tony or the Falcons. Tony, you are All-Pro to the Falcons fans.

Curtis Lofton or Ovie should have made the cut this year. Second year Lofton has one of the most tackels in the league and Ovie has been such a big blocker, defenses have to adjust to him to stop our running game. There was a lot of competition for tight end with Celek not making it either. In this league if you don”t make the playoffs, you wont go to the Pro Bowl. Abraham got 16.5 sacks last year and didn’t go, so it’s all just a popularity contest. Too bad for Gonzo, but their will be more football to play next year. Soon people will remember the Falcons.

Joseph – I couldn’t see your post when I wrote my comments and I wondered how my comments would be received as it was a bit off topic. Your post assures me that I’m not the only one who has noticed. I understand that all teams get bad calls from time to time but the Falcons received so many this year that one must wonder if the NFL has some beef with us.

How can you say Tony Gonzalez was robbed when he wasn’t even the THIRD best TE in the NFC?
* Jason Witten: 88 catches, 954 yards and one TD.
* Vernon Davis: 72 catches, 876 yards and 12 TDs
* Tony Gonzalez: 80 catches, 837 yards and six TDs.
* Brent Celek: 69 ctaches, 875 yards and 8 TDs.
Celek had more TDs and more yards in fewer attempts. The Pro Bowl got it right on Davis and Witten.

Gonzo has 5 more TD’s and more 1st down conversions than Witten.
Celek has 7 more TD’s than Witten, but Witten does have 88 catches.
I’m disapointed for Gonzo and Celek…obviously the fans in Dallas stuffed the ballot box… but there are only so many slots. Shancoe has 10 TD’s on the year. That’s definately pro bowl caliber as well.

Lofton has had a great year, but it’s hard for me to put him in over Willis and Vilma is deserving if only for the huge plays he made against us.
I think Roddy with his 1100 or so yards and 10 TD’s through 15 games is the biggest snub, not that Sidney Rice is undeserving, he’s been awesome especially that catch on MNF last week… but Roddy should be going to the Pro Bowl.

Win and you’re (they’re) in.
I’m a fan (after another teams’s)but the Falcon’s didn’t win big, their offense was anemic, defense (secondary, mostly) atrocious. Yes, Gonzalez was the only one worthy, but when the other factor’s come into play – no one was going to go.
This team never won big, never did anything beyond the norm and was never talked about around the league. Case closed.
Falcons of 2009 should focus on the only thing that matters now: getting that consecutive winning season. Good Luck next year.

There’s more to being a tight end than catching passes. I’m not saying it’s so about TG, but maybe players and coaches put more emphasis on blocking than fans (TG had the most fan votes). There is also more to being a DT than sacks, etc.
DOL, I think you make a good point about the Falcon’s performance in prime-time games and, right or wrong, this is all some voters have to go by. For the coaches and players on teams that do not play the Falcons, this may be their only opportunity to see them. Plus lack of highlights on ESPN
& NFL net.
I think that Gonzales & Lofton deserved the Pro Bowl. I still do not think that RWhite is an “elite,#1″ receiver and Babs effort against the run is sometimes lacking. I don’t understand your mention of MPeterson; there are plenty of better olbs. JMHO.
We are all disappointed that no Falcons were picked, but as other posters have said, it’s hard to argue with the selections; i.e Vilma & Willis vs. Lofton.

This is a reflection of the Falcon fans, not TGs play.
While a Chief, TG would get plenty of votes from the Chiefs fans and votes from the AFC west teams that they faced. That did not happen. The Chiefs were 2-14 last year, but TG still went to the pro bowl. His numbers were okay. The fans failed to vote. The city of Atlanta is to blame for this.

You can make a case for a couple TEs going ahead of Gonzalez, but White was robbed. He should have walked in with this solid season and two previous 1,000-yard seasons.

The pro bowl is a joke from the fan voting to the actual game.
They have the fans vote in an attempt to interest them in the game. Yet, it doesn’t work.
They move the pro bowl to the week before the Super Bowl to try to force us to watch it, it will not work.
No one wants to see football at half speed where nobody hits.

It is true that the fans have to vote in order to get their favorites into the pro bowl; however, there should always be a reliable method to allow a players “play” to speak for itself, that is unless you play for Atlanta. Thanks DK I am always amazed how it seems as though the Falcons seem to get jobbed by the refs on a regular basis. I do think the team is headed in the right direction and who cares if Matty Ice isn’t the next Peyton Manning. Peyton Manning wasn’t even todays Peyton Manning for the first three years. I think in the end Matty Ice will be every bit as good as Peyton and Eli.

I think Lofton not making it is a bigger rip than Gonzalez, but they both should have been there. The Pro Bowl is a joke anyway. There are no Bengals on the roster even though they just won their division. The NFL promotes the teams it thinks will get ratings. That is why the Bears had 5 Prime Time games this year despite the fact they were coming off a season where they failed to make the playoffs and lost to Atlanta who made the playoffs and only got 3. The NFL and the people who cover it have seemed to always have a bias against Atlanta. If Claude Humphrey, Jeff van Note, Mike Kenn, Tommy Nobis, and Jessie Tuggle played their careers in Dallas they would have been in the Hall of Fame by now, but because they played in Atlanta their names never get mentioned. Winning would go a long way to changing that perception. Does anyone think Andre Tippett would be in the Hall of Fame if the Pats hadn’t won three Super Bowls recently?

Tony G was pretty high in the fan voting I believe.
Jason Witten’s one TD as a starter is embarassing.
Shiancoe had 10 TD’s. Celek 6 or 7.
Any of those 3 could have been taken over Witten’s 82 catches and 1082 yards. Yeah that’s impressive, but they ignored him in the red zone.

**John** you do realize that TG led the TE position in fan voting? Unfortunately that is only 1/3 of the voting, the other is coaches (1/3) and players (1/3). So Atlanta and its fans voting or not voting had nothing to do with TG not getting in. He was the leading vote getter heading into the players and coaches tallies.

UpperDeck4Life: shows why the fans vote is only 1/3. Witten not only caught a lot of passes, but is the best blocking TE in the league. Davis was the main man in San Francisco. Only 2 TE’s get to go, and TG was not one of the 2 best TE’s in the NFC this year The NFC has much better TE’s than the AFC, and TG would not have made the AFC either, behind Gates and Clark, and if Owen Daniels didn’t get hurt, him, too. Stop being such a homer.

What’s even worse than the snubs? Players from teams in the Super Bowl won’t play in the Pro-Bowl. So it is highly unlikely (based on records ) that the players from two of the 4 following teams: Colts (6), Saints(5), Chargers (3) or Viking (8!!!) players will be in the game.
That being said I looked at Sidney Rice’s number aren’t shabby either: 77 receptions, 1200 yards, 15.6 yards per catch and 6 TDs.
Roddy White: 79 receptions, 1087 yards, 13.8 yards per catch and 10 TDs.
Lance Biggs is, perhaps, less deserving than Lofton.
Briggs:106 tackles, 2.5 sacks 0 forced fumbles and 1 interception.
Lofton: 129 tackles, 0 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 0 fumbles.
Well, it’s hard to argue against Briggs too. Sadly I think Celek of Philadelphia deserves Pro-Bowl recognition and I did vote for TG too! So it’s a shame no Falcon or Bengal made the roster straight in, but perhaps one or more might make it as a Super Bowl replacement.

Regarding the Braves roster moves – either they have major financial restraints or they are stupid. Lets hope it’s not the latter….

if the falcons want pro bowlers, they need to establish themselves as a multi headed threat. the run game worked last year but the league didnt quite fall asleep on it.
im all for being a running team and all but only if you use all your wide receivers properly. out of about 11 receiving targets, I think I speak for every one when i say that we all think of the same two names as the ones Matt tries to squeeze the ball to and that’s with two other receivers on IR.

I agree with whoever said that the probowl is over rated. Half speed football making sure no one gets hurt, and we know that the best are not always the ones that get picked. It is much like the Nobel Peace Prize, where conservatives have no chance of winning, so I just say, it’s not for everyone and I’m not disappointed when my guys don’t get picked.

Let’s face it folks, after the Vick debacle, the world has just decided the Falcons ain’t “Sh-T!” In my opinion, they weren’t Sh-t to start out with. HA,HA,HA. No Super Bowl, No Pro Bowl and No winning season. And to their misfortune, No Mike Vick.

You may think we got robbed, but let’s face it. It’s the NFL. It’s professional football, with the best players you can get. The truth is that if you don’t have a breakthrough season, you won’t be as recognized as the teams that do. Take the Saints as an example. They’re in the NFC South too, and they stole most of the attention. A 9-7 record is good, but 13-3 obviously will get more talk. Yeah, I agree that Roddy, Gonzo and Lofton all had Pro Bowl-worthy seasons, but there were other players out there that just got more opportunities. In Tony’s case, you have Vernon Davis, who is a touchdown in human form. The guy’s amazing. Witten I’m not so sure about, but Dallas had a great season and I think that may have helped Witten get in. Nothing’s going to change it now though. We’ll just have to get that attention back in 2010.
