UPDATE

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, in order to rest his turf toe injury, did not practice on Wednesday.

Also, running back Michael Turner (right high ankle sprain) did not participate in practice.

“He did go through the walk through this morning,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “We had anticipated that if he was going to play, that would be  the course of action that we would take. It’s not a setback. It was a course of action that we were going to take.”

THE DRAFT AND COMPENSATORY PICKS — FALCONS COULD HAVE 9 PICKS IN THE 2010 DRAFT

THE BRANCH –  There’s indeed a method to the workings of Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff’s madness.

You have to give it to him, for being way ahead of the pack on this draft stuff.

Last summer, right here on this blog, we were wondering aloud why the Falcons were not signing any free agents and

Keith Brooking is worth a fourth or fifth round compensatory pick.

Keith Brooking is worth a fourth or fifth round compensatory pick.

letting all of those defensive starters go. They had cap room and could have pulled the trigger on a few deals. Cornerback Jabari Greer would have been nice. Ron Bartell could have worked, too.

But Dimitroff held his cards tight and just signed linebacker Mike Peterson. They traded the second round pick of the 2010 draft to Kansas City for tight end Tony Gonzalez and had to burn the seventh round pick to get Tye Hill from St. Louis.

As it stands today, the Falcons will have their own picks in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth rounds of the deep 2010 draft.

Michael Boley's signing with the Giants should bring the Falcons a pretty high compensatory draft pick.

Michael Boley's signing with the Giants should bring the Falcons a pretty high compensatory draft pick.

But here’s the kicker, by letting Domonique Foxworth, Michael Boley, Keith Brooking and Grady Jackson leave during free agency, the Falcons could gain as many as four compensatory picks when they are announced by the league in March.

Last season a total of 32 compensatory picks were awarded to 16 teams, including four each to Cincinnati and Tennessee. The maximum number of compensatory picks a team can receive is four.

Pursuant to the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires is the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

A formula, developed by the NFL Management Council and based on playing time, salary and postseason honors is used to determine compensatory free agents.

Under this formula, the Falcons are almost certain to get a third round pick for cornerback Domonique Foxworth. He signed a four year, $27.2 million contract and is starting his little heart away. He’s made all 14 starts for the Ravens. He’s struggling so there probably won’t be many post-season honors.

Michael Boley, who signed a five-year, $25 million deal with the New York Giants, could likely bring the Falcons a fourth round pick. Boley was suspended for a game and was injured. But he’s played in nine games and is second on the Giants in tackles with 65.

Dallas linebacker Keith Brooking could be worth a fourth or fifth round compensatory pick and Detroit defensive tackle Grady Jackson could be worth a seventh round pick.

So, with the Falcons needing to add some depth and competition at some key positions, they could end up with nine picks in the 2010 draft.

We’re months away from the draft, but here are a couple of things that will likely appear on the Falcons’ draft list.

–A good tight end who can serve an apprenticeship under Gonzalez.

–Cornerback and linebacker depth.

–Some more muscle along both lines.

–Some more running back and wide receiver insurance.

All this assuming we make no trades for more picks. I’m hoping we come out of this draft looking stronger than ever, and I wouldn’t be surprised if TD already has his eye on a few late round people.

Uh, let’s rank that:

1. Cover Corner – Flo State Cb looks good
2. Pass Rush help – pick a guy, any guy, lots of good prospects
3. RB depth
4. WR depth
5. O-line, D-line, LB depth

Good chance to make up for this 2009 bunch that hasn’t had an impact, so much so Kiper might give it an F.

D-Led, who might out there Free Agency wise the birds could look at?

Good Article, in my opinion, behind cornerback and defensive line, I think the offensive line needs to be addressed, especially right tackle. I think the Falcon should look into free agents as well as the draft to shore up the right tackle. If you watched the last game against the Jets, Matt Ryan was clearly jumpy with his right side protection. In order for the Falcon’s to be an dominant offense, they are going to need to become dominant at the line of scrimmage. That means, they need a more physical line.

But keep in mind that Mike Peterson will compensate for the loss of Brooking so we shouldnt get a pick for him. I’m saying the max amount of picks we get would be 3. Hopefully a 3rd for foxy, a 4th or 5th for Boley, and a 7th for Grady. I’m sure we are going to trade on draft day as well to get into the second round. I’m assuming we go with a DE with our first pick, we have alot of quality players on the D-Line, but we need an elite pass rusher that I believe we can get somewhere in the middle of round one. Then I bet we will trade up into the 2nd round to either get a good CB, or an O-lineman…

Before the draft even starts, go find a starting CB in free agency to go with our young corners. I see potential in Jackson and Owens. Grimes has also impressed me, but he should be our nickel or dime corner. Chris Houston has no ball skills. If he hasn’t learned to turn his head by now, he never will. William Moore is an “in the box” SS, and will probably not challenge Coleman next year. I met Louis Delmas (Detroit FS) back this summer. He said that Moore had trouble back pedaling when they practiced at the Senior Bowl. He is another year away from starting (maybe never).

As far as the defensive line, we need to cut bait with Jamal Anderson and trade him to a 3-4 team. He is not the up the field pass rushing defensive end. I pray that Peria Jerry comes back healthy. We can’t keep drafting defensive lineman and keep holding on to what we got. Either these guys develop or they got to go. That’s why we have a log jam at defensive end right now.

We need one more fast young linebacker. If we could get Rolando McClain from Alabama, I would be very happy. He is also big enough to rush the passer from the edge on passing downs. . He might very well be our first round pick.

As far as offense, we should not re-sign Norwood (just too fragile). Go find a change of pace back in the third round. We also need a receiver to replace Finneran. Maybe two. And contrary to popular belief, Michael Jenkins is a good 2nd receiver. Ryan and Mularkey need to start getting the guy involved in the game early on and stop it with the constant check downs to Ovie and Snelling.

The Falcons should look to draft the big tight end out of South Carolina (forget his name #88). He played behind Jared Cook in 2008. Cook has taken some of Alge’s playing time in Tennessee this season.

On the offensive line, find a tackle to take Clabo’s place. I would still keep Tyson though. He would provide good depth at both the guard and tackle position.

Ideally the Falcons should get a taller corner to help with the tall receivers in the league now. I don’t know if there is one available that is ‘1st round worthy’ in the draft this year.

Interestingly, some of the early draft mocks have Terrence Cody of Bama dropping in the draft. Is it worth taking a flyer on him and possibly moving Babs to DE?

The draft is primarily a long term solution, with the status of the franchise on shakey financial grounds the immediate relief of free agency must be considered as well as trades.
One improbable but interesting trade would be to trade Roddy White and a draft pick(3rd round) to Detroit for Calvin Johnson. The modern trend is tall strong receivers like Larry Fitzgerald and Andre johnson. With the rumored feud between Calvin and Matt Stafford, the Lions dismal future , a return to Atlanta may be appealing to him and the Lions. Harry Douglas gives the team a quick slot guy and Gonzalez has 1 more year in the tank. roddy becomes the go to guy in Detroit and there is peace in the their locker room.

Free agency should be the first option for the D-line . Julius Peppers is a little long of tooth but that factor could work in the Falcons favor if they pitch him the idea that they are building for a 2010-11 Super Bowl caliber team and he is the key building block.

As far as cornerback, the left side specifically run ,do not walk, to the free agency line and get the best available guy over 6′ and under 27.
The first round draft pick should be used to find Turner’s successor because the “Burner’s”expiration date is fast approaching and Norwood is history. How about a back who is both fast and powerful?

As far as the linebacker corps, how about looking at Sidberry as an outside backer? while he is viewed as Abe’s replacement, if Peppers can keep the double teams away, Abe might have a renewed lease on life. Sidberry has the size and speed that could be very helpful.

I’d love to see the Falcons package a couple of those compensatory picks with our first-rounder to move up in the draft. A CB like Haden is exactly what we need in the secondary to stop the embarrassment of watching every QB who plays against us this year have the best game of his career.

Nique

We have to get a lock down CB this draft. The corners are less deep than the D-linemen, so i believe that if were going to address this position in the draft, it has to be our 1st round pick. Now we could trade down to a later 1st to pick up an additional pick, but we still need to walk away with a CB in the 1st round. Below are the top 6 CB’s I’ve seen on draft boards, with their height, weight, & Int #’s for this year. I believe that it’s crucial that we get a CB with size to match up with these bigger receivers & 3 of the 6 on this list are 6-0 or taller.

1. Joe Haden, Florida, Jr. 20, 5-11, 190, with 8 Ints
2. Patrick Robinson, Florida St. 22, 5-11, 193, with 7 Ints
3. Perrish Cox, Oklahoma St. 22, 6-0, 195, with 11 Ints
4. Kyle Wilson, Boise St. 22, 5-10, 186, with 11 Ints
5. Ras-I Dowling, Virginia Jr. 21, 6-2, 200, with 8 Ints
6. Trevard Lindley, Kentucky 23, 6-1, 179, with 10 Ints

What do you think about them taking Carlos Dunlap out of Florida? He’s been rated the top DE all year but a lot of ppl have him slipping bc of the who DUI incident. I know the birds have the whole moral conduct thing going, but this is the only time he’s been in trouble & he’s the legit pass rusher we need at 20 years old, 6-6, 290 with 9 sacks last year & 7 this year in the SEC. I still think we should go CB in the 1st, but he drops to use, this has to intrigue T.D., what do think?

uga_b

We do not need a “lock-down” CB (who would not be available when we pick anyway). We need a pass rusher; in fact, we need two DEs this draft. The only other immediate starting caliber players we need are C and RT. I hope they take a C in the 3rd Rd. They should take a DE in the 1st unless they have flown off the board and a Rolando McClain value is there. 2nd day picks are crap shoots and should be used to build OL RB, LB and WR depth.

I fully expect us to trade up in this draft to get back into the 2nd-3rd range.

& for everyone yelling to go FA for CB’s here’s the list, only 2 to be excited about in my humble opinion (Rodgers & Robinson).

Top Cornerbacks:
Carlos Rogers, Washington Redskins (29)
He’s been targeted only 47 times this year and has had several shutdown games. Rogers is a good cover corner and in the league’s top 10. He does a nice job of contesting passes and is rarely caught completely out of position.

Tramon Williams, Green Bay Packers (27) – Restricted FA
Tramon Williams started the season as the third corner behind Al Harris and Charles Woodson, splitting out wide in nickel packages to allow Woodson to slip inside to the slot. After Harris’ season-ending injury Williams stepped into the starting lineup with ease.

Dunta Robinson, Houston Texans (28)
After holding out for nearly the entire offseason, Dunta Robinson stepped in and played pretty poorly, allowing a number of intermediate catches against him. Over the last few weeks, Robinson has stepped up his play and limited the damage.

Richard Marshall, Carolina Panthers (25)
Marshall has put up gaudy tackling numbers in his first three seasons, averaging over 80 per season. Starting opposite Chris Gamble, Marshall has actually played very well this season. He hasn’t given up many big plays and come up with a couple picks himself. Marshall loves to get physical and is likely to be rewarded by the Panthers at the end of the season with a long-term deal.

Leigh Bodden, New England Patriots (28)
Bodden has rebounded well from his last year’s poor performance on the Lions. He’s picked off 5 passes on the year and gotten his hands on 16 others. Other than 2 or 3 below average games,

Other Notable Free Agents:
Alan Ball, Dallas Cowboys (25) – Restricted FA
Dre’ Bly, San Francisco 49ers (33)
Ralph Brown, Arizona Cardinals (31)
Brent Grimes, Atlanta Falcons (27) – Restricted FA
Nick Harper, Tennessee Titans (35)
Walt Harris, San Francisco 49ers (36)
Anthony Henry, Detroit Lions (33)
Ellis Hobbs, Philadelphia Eagles (27)
Roderick Hood, Cleveland Browns (28)
Marlin Jackson, Indianapolis Colts (27)
Tim Jennings, Indianapolis Colts (27)
Ken Lucas, Seattle Seahawks (31)
Karl Paymah, Minnesota Vikings (27)
Stanford Routt, Oakland Raiders (27)
Deshea Townsend, Pittsburgh Steelers (34)
Fabian Washington, Baltimore Ravens (27)
Usama Young, New Orleans Saints (25) – Restricted FA

Whats up D.Led

This is what the compensatory pick Guru AdamJT13 thinks.

Atlanta — The Falcons lost four qualifying players and signed either one or two. They should receive a third- or fourth-round pick for losing Dominique Foxworth and a fifth or sixth for losing Michael Boley. If Brett Romberg does not qualify, the Falcons also will receive a pick as compensation for losing Grady Jackson, likely in the seventh round.

Keith Brooking does not count because we signed Mike Peterson.

Umm….what seems to be ignored here is that if the Falcons end up with 9 or so draft picks in this draft…they can really use that for leverage on acquiring free agents or tradeable players that are already STARTERS in the NFL instead…personally…the draft is unpredictable…free agents or starting players already know their business.

Roddy White is a better receiver right now than Calvin Johnson. He is also young. Why would Detroit make this trade? Why would the Falcons?

Did Dan Reeves ghost write this article? I’ve never heard of drafting a tight end to hold a clipboard and learn the position. If you want one for depth there are plenty of guys to grab off the free agent heap. No need to waste a pick at a position of strength. Gonzalez has several good years left, use them up and address the situation in a few years. We need to stockpile linemen and DBs, not tight ends.

Trade all 8 picks late-round picks and Norwood to get the #2 pick. Draft Eric Berry. Use your late first-round pick to draft any of the 3-4 solid DLs that may be left on the board (Austin, Jones, Price, Dunlap).

We had a shot at D. Robinson in last years free agency market & didn’t make any kind of effort, so hopefully that changes, but other than him Rodgers & Marlin Jackson excite me as possibilities & Bodden & Marshal will be significant upgrades, but I still fill that if we don’t get Robinson or Rodgers we need to go CB in the 1st, because who we have is as good as those other guys & who we have is not/will not get it done! Projected by 19 the only definite off the board at CB is Haden according to what I’ve seen, I find that a little hard to believe, but with 7 CB’s separating themselves from the pack this year, 1. Joe Haden, Florida, Jr. 20, 5-11, 190, with 8 Ints. 2. Patrick Robinson, Florida St. 22, 5-11, 193, with 7 Ints. 3. Perrish Cox, Oklahoma St. 22, 6-0, 195, with 11 Ints. 4. Kyle Wilson, Boise St. 22, 5-10, 186, with 11 Ints. 5. Ras-I Dowling, Virginia Jr. 21, 6-2, 200, with 8 Ints. 6. Trevard Lindley, Kentucky 23, 6-1, 179, with 10 Ints. & 7. Donovan Warren, Michigan, 20, 6-0, 185, with 6 Int’s. We can’t expect one of them to still be left late in the 3rd round when we pick again with as many CB problems as this league has.

I know Falcon fans want to see some big name “touchdown scorers” drafted in the first three rounds, but it is really hard to throw/run a football when the o-line is getting blown off the ball upfront. Get the best O-Linemen we can get. Picking a big name skill player just gives Arthur another body to throw under the bus when things don’t go right.

Norwood has to go. Even when healthy he goes down too easily when hit. But now he has recurring injuries. Concussions are a death-knell, if he goes out with another one and ends up on IR we won’t be able to trade him. He could be replaced with a DeAngelo Williams type RB.

As much as I like Finneran, he has to many injuries to his credit, and we can’t afford to have him sitting on the bench because of them.

The brass seems to like Jamaal Anderson, I guess because of his size, and he has been in the lineup. My guess is that he is the least of their worries.

The D-line will manage to hold the opposition for 2 running plays, then we give up a first-down pass. So I guess we need big, tall CBs. With Turner’s straight ahead style of running, we have to get him thru the line of scrimmage so he can get some momentum. How will this happen? Will the same guys we have be able to do it. A couple of years ago we were a great running team with the cut-blocking scheme, and I didn’t think that line was better than what we have now. So if we can get the running game going and some good CBs I think we will look a lot better.

On offense people that can stand the heat NOT like Matt Ryan and Sam baker both are punks weak. Courtney, the only team that lets good cornerbacks go is us. Realist, Foxworth got let go, because he was expensive. He was expensive, because he played great. I know it might be the Atlanta way to stab people in the back that play great, but your really just stabbing yourself in the back, ie. this years’ performance. Be sure to watch Foxworth play in the playoffs, so you can get a better perspective on how the position is played properly. I might only be a white boy, but I know talent. Losing Foxworth is like when the Hawks were on top of the NBA, and in celebration, they decided, in the middle of the season, to dumb Dominique Wilkins.

I like the idea of drafting a quality tight end to be tutored by a future hall of famer. Those who don’t thinks so are thinking like Rankin Smith and family. Since corners should be loaded in this draft, corners should be a secon priority and then defensive line and then offensive line. Peria Jerry should be back and healthy which is a plus.

Brent Grimes has to go… He is a good player with lots of heart but his size is a liability and cost the team. Norwood needs to go also. We need a homerun hitter that does not go down after the first contact. I would call Norwood…. Delicate or Frail.

If the Falcons could find some tall fast wideouts that could catch on a regular basis I would let Finneran and the kid out of Ohio State go. Both miss too many passes.

I think most of you should just continue to focus on Madden.

Dominique Foxworth has completely underwhelmed this year.

Grady Jackson has made no impact.

Brooking was completely outplayed by Peterson.

Boley is still a big sissy.

Lawyer Milloy’s wheels are gone.

They cut the right people. You just can’t turnover a 53 man team in 2 years. Consider you can draft 8 a year for 16 total and maybe pick up 3-5 FAs for 10 total. That’s only half the team. You aren’t going to find 17 undrafted FAs.

So what do you do? You address the impact areas. MLB may be a pro bowler. Space eating DT with Jerry (got hurt, but move was good), QB is fine, RB was good for a year. The League is rough. Getting a “SHUTDOWN CORNER” with a first overall pick and still having no pass rush negates the move. Deion couldn’t cover a number 1 WR for 7 seconds. Consequently, not getting the play out of the OL affects the QB/RB, which we have also seen. Build upfront; win ballgames; shut up the dissenters.

The TE is a “Hall of Famer” because he catches and is more athletic than everybody else. You can teach players a lot, but they are still limited by their own physical potential, so drafting a TE to be trained by Gonzales is something a manager would do, who does not know a lot about being an athlete. Peele is a good TE. Are you going to just let him go, or should we just have two QB, and carry a bunch of TEs?

Johns…most mock drafts have Spiller going in the top 10.

Fans, don’t get rid of our B-team cornerbacks. You have to have backups, and we have good backup cornerbacks. Please keep in mind that they are not our A-players.

The problem at the beginning of the season was that we were going to lose all of the games against good quarterbacks, because we do not have a good enough secondary. Our problem for 2010 is the same, and I am hearing, “let’s get a tight end.” If this is the Falcon’s solution, then I’m going to start watching women’s football instead of the Falcons, because at least the effort to win is there with that game.

MAD-DONNA, we get mad because Mike Vick doesn’t play here (after he betrayed the trust shown him and putting the franchise back 3-4 years by going to jail). This is a Falcons blog. You are welcome to go to a Philadelphia blog and show your Vick support. I get tired of trying to read about my team and having illiterate posts about a former player. PERIOD.

And for the last bleeping time, Matt Ryan never contacted Mike Vick in high school/college to tell him to set up an interstate dog fighting operation, go to jail, and make the Falcons draft him, so quit hating on him for your man’s failures. Matt has done everything the team has asked of him and more; unlike your boy, he stays late; works with receivers; and studies film. Vick has said he didn’t do that while he was here, so don’t act like it is my opinion.

That was one of many options the Falcons need to explore. The Falcons should be selective when it comes to FA. IT FIRST BECAME obvious, this feeling between Michael Vick and his new teammates, a couple of weeks ago in Atlanta. It was his homecoming game, as it were. It was where he scored his first touchdown for the Eagles and his teammates bounded off of the bench in celebration, where cornerback Sheldon Brown said that he and some of the players were telling each other before the game that they wanted to win it for Vick.

I mean, win one for Mike? Really? We all observe from a distance, and it was so hard to see or to understand. But it was real. There is no doubt that it was real, this bond between Vick and his new teammates.

And, now, this:

The Eagles’ players have unanimously voted Vick as the team’s recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award, given annually to the player on each NFL team who exemplifies “commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and courage.”

Guilty of horrific crimes. Sentenced to a federal prison term. Forfeited millions and millions of dollars. Back in the league for only a few months, only through the good graces of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Eagles coach Andy Reid. Now, a convicted felon honored by his teammates for overcoming a terrible situation into which he had put himself.

“I’m not sure you can explain it unless you’ve gone through it here with him,” Reid said yesterday. “Everybody is going to have their opinion on it, I’m sure. Until you’ve been with him for the hours that his teammates have been with him and seen him through all these different things that he’s had to go through, that time-tested part of it, you can’t appreciate it quite as much.

“I don’t expect everybody to understand it, no, but I think it’s a tribute when it’s a slam dunk by his teammates voting him that. It was just a unanimous vote there.”

That this is just a gut punch to the people who have opposed Vick’s reinstatement goes without saying. For them, a PETA spokesman said:

“The Philadelphia Eagles fumbled when they gave Michael Vick the Ed Block Courage Award, which was named after a man who advocated in behalf of abused children. Michael Vick should not be the person anyone points to as a model of sportsmanship, even though he has now exchanged dogs for touchdowns after serving time for extreme cruelty to animals. We wish him well in educating others, but this is not appropriate and does not mark a joyous moment in NFL history.”

It is hard to disagree with any of that. It does seem too soon to be celebrating Vick. It does not feel right – and this comes from somebody who thought Vick deserved a chance to play this year, somebody who was looking forward to seeing what he could do on the field.

But here is the thing: I did not get a vote and you did not get a vote. This is a players’ award, voted upon by players. And whatever your personal feelings, it is impossible not to be fascinated by this team’s embrace of Vick, right from the start.

“I never worried that guys wouldn’t accept me,” Vick said. “That probably was one of the last things on my mind. The most important thing was to get in here and get to know the guys and get acclimated in the city and playing football again. You just let things happen naturally. You just be yourself.”

This is more than just teammates supporting a teammate. It is clear that they like the guy. Talking to them through the season, it is clear that they thought the punishment for the crime was so severe, prison-wise and especially financially, only because Vick was a celebrity. Their inclination as fellow celebrities was to root for him, and as fellow teammates to root for his ability to help them on the field. But the feelings still ended up going deeper, and this award demonstrates it.

“It means a great deal,” Vick said. “I’ve only been in this locker room for 3 1/2 months. For those guys to feel that way about me, it means a lot to me. The bond that I have with the players on this team and the way we’ve jelled has been outstanding.”

Someone asked Vick what kind of courage he demonstrated, per the award.

“I’ve had to overcome a lot, more than probably one single individual can bear,” he said. “Take a look at what I’ve been through. You ask certain people to walk in my shoes, they probably couldn’t do it – probably 95 percent of the people in this world. Because nobody had to endure what I’ve been through, situations I’ve been put in, situations I’ve placed myself in, decisions that I’ve made, whether they were good or bad. There are always consequences behind certain things and there are repercussions behind them, too. Then you have to wake up every day and face the world, whether they perceive you in the right perspective or it’s a totally different outlook on you.

“You just have to be strong and believe in yourself and be optimistic. That’s what I’ve been able to do and that’s what I display.”

When you talk to Vick, it sometimes takes him a minute to get to the key point: situations I’ve placed myself in. That is what rankles for some, still, that minute it sometimes takes. But it is all part of a longer process.

Anyway, Vick said, “The thing I told Roger [Goodell] was that, 4 or 5 years from now, when I come to him, I’ll be able to say everything I told you I was going to do, I’m still doing it. That’s what I pride myself on. That’s my focus and that’s my goal.”

That might have seemed a more appropriate time for an award such as this one, not now. Then again, this is all about a bond within a locker room, a place that none of us can hope to understand from the outside

Seymour can collapsed the pocket and put consistent pressure on the QB he is 30 but he can play play either on 1st and 2nd downs or just 3rd down passing plays and can play DE and DT he would help guys like SIDBURY ,BIERMANN and the 1st round draft pick DE with the transition and the team with good depth!
