FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and running back Michael Turner both returned to

practice on Thursday.
Both have missed the last two games. Ryan suffered a turf toe injury and Turner re-injured his right ankle sprain on Nov. 29 against Tampa Bay.
Both are hopeful that they will be able to play against the New York Jets on Sunday.
“Nobody likes to have to sit down, but it’s something that you’re going to have to deal with at different points in your career,” Ryan said.
Turner originally was injured against Carolina on Nov. 15. He tried to play two weeks later against Tampa Bay and was re-injured.
“You just want to try to get back out there and be productive,” Turner said. “It’s very important to see where I’m at, to see if the soreness will go away and things like that. I need to see if I can really handle, playing and cutting.
Michael Turner returned to practice. If he doesn't have a reaction to the work, he's said, "there's no question" that he'll play on Sunday. (Curtis Compton/ccompton@ajc.com)
“It’s still not quite 100 percent, but if it feels like that, there would be no question that I will be playing.”
The Falcons were elated to see their top two offensive weapons back on the field.
“He was out there firing the ball everywhere,” wide receiver Roddy White said of Ryan. “He was out there controlling the huddle and telling guys to listen up. That was good.”
SEVERAL GAMES LOST TO INJURY: Just wondering if we jinxed the Falcons when we wrote about the team’s functional movement screens and how it helped to keep them healthy.
Well, this season they are amongst the league leaders in players placed on the injury reserve list and likely in games loss by starters, too.
Pro Football Weekly did its ranking on the NFL’s most injured teams. In the “Infirmary Report” the Falcons were tied for 17th with the most players on the injured-reserve list with six.
The report came out before Brian Finneran was placed on injured-reserve on Tuesday. I think they missed

Tiffany Gilbert, wife of Atlanta Falcons linebacker Tony Gilbert and member of the Off the Field players' wives club, hit the aisles of Sam's Club last Thursday to find the perfect holiday gifts for ten Atlanta-area families as part of an annual, charitable "Dream Drive" partnership with the Salvation Army and Sam's Club.
linebacker Tony Gilbert (hamstring) because the Falcons have eight players on injured reserve.
Here’s the group: wide receiver Harry Douglas (knee), defensive tackle Peria Jerry (knee), cornerback Brian Williams (knee), safety William Moore (hamstring), safety Jamaal Fudge (knee) and long snapper Mike Schneck (broken ribs).
Buffalo (15), Detroit (12), New Orleans (12), Baltimore (11) and Tampa Bay (11) are the top five teams. Only New Orleans has a winning record in the group.
Another way to count the impact of injuries is to count the games missed by starters. Here’s the rundown of 32 games missed by starters:
Left tackle Sam Baker (two games).
Right guard Harvey Dahl (two games).
Wide receiver Michael Jenkins (one game).
Quarterback Matt Ryan (two games).
Running back Michael Turner (three games).
Fullback Ovie Mughell (two games).
Defensive tackle Thomas Johnson (two games).
Cornerback Brian Williams (eight).
Defensive tackle Peria Jerry (10)
Not playing has been tough on Turner, who periodically will drop by the open locker room sessions to give us an update. We haven’t heard from Ryan since his injury on Nov. 29 so we don’t know how he’s coping with his turf toe.
It’s “Day 18 in the Where’s Matt Media Watch.”
It’s clearly killing Turner that he can help out while the Falcons have gone 1-3 since he hurt the ankle against Charlotte on Nov. 15.
“It’s very difficult,” Turner said. “You want to be out there trying to help your teammates win. Helping them pull of a win. Football is a game where injuries happen. You just have to deal with it.”
Turner said he doesn’t regret trying to come back too soon against Tampa Bay on Nov. 29 either.
Also, key reserves like Jerious Norwood (six games) and Finneran (three) have also missed games.
Last season, Baker, who suffered a concussion and a back injury, was the only starter to miss any games. He missed 11 starts, but played in eight games, making five starts.
The Falcons don’t want to make excuses for their 6-7 record, but you can’t ignore an injury list this long.
E-MAIL BAG: Exchanged a few e-mails with Tom over biased officiated. He didn’t like the call on Grimes either.
“Thanks for responding.
I did get some satisfaction from hearing Deion Sanders and Michael Irvin calling the interference flag bogus, then seeing the ESPN panel put it on their “C’mon Man” list last night.
The NFL has always justified not publicly admitting officiating errors by saying that it would hurt public confidence in the game. I’ve always felt that it is actually just the opposite. It gives the appearance of the league covering up its dirt.
Anyway, keep up the good work.
Go Falcons,
Tom”

Atlanta Falcons wives and members of Off the Field hit the aisles of Sam's Club to fill baskets with clothes, household products and toys to brighten the holiday season for ten Atlanta-area families as part of an annual, charitable "Dream Drive" partnership with the Salvation Army and Sam's Club.
FALCONS WIVES SPREADING CHRISTMAS SPIRIT: Some of the Falcons wives participated in the Third Annual Dream Drive program.
The wives from Off the Field Players Wives Association worked with Sam’s Club to select a wide range of holiday gifts, including clothes, food, personal items and toys, in an effort to brighten the holiday season for some Salvation Army families. (This season I haven’t been walking past the bell ringers at Wal-Mart. Feeling pretty good about throwing a little cash in the red bucket!)
The Atlanta Dream Drive event was held last Thursday at the Sam’s Club on Clairmont Road in North Atlanta. At the event, wives of seven Atlanta Falcons players shopped for 10 local families, totaling $10,000 in food and gifts.

The birds are playing for pride from here out this season. Let’s hope they continue to have some. The GM has lots of work to do in the off season. Weems and Babinoux are probably gonners. I don’t think less of them personally for their current plight but it is unprofessional to say the least and their irresponsible choices have hurt the team.

Yes, it seems over. Play like champions guys! We will have a football dynasty right here in Atlanta next decade. You got screwed in the NO game (and a couple of Mularkey mistakes). But do me this favor, if we get down to nothing on the line put that Joe Tom Billy Bob Parker in at QB for a few snaps, get him some reps in live action and let’s see what he’s got.

That is a little naive but I guess you were just trying to get your joke in. Babs and Weems will be addressed but it is two different things. Babs was arrested for an illegal substance, Weem for DUI.
Both should be charged with STUPIDITY. I wonder if DeKalb helped Weems keep his arrest under the radar.

Injuries are always a killer, but I like that the Falcons aren’t using it as an excuse. It tells me a lot about this team.
While the Falcons most likely will miss the playoffs this season, I still want them to win out. Go into the off season hot and come out next season firing on all cylinders.

Unfortunately playing the Jets and thier running game with our patchwork defense is not the recipe for 9-7.
No they aren’t a great team but thier defense (esp Revis who will take away Roddy White) and running game are excellent and we can’t stop anybody.

There is a differce between excuses and reasons. One of the main reasons the Falcons are 6-7 is because of injuries. Not saying it would be much differnt but at least a game or two.

This sounds like an excuse the Ga bulldogs would come up with. Every team can expect injuries but if
they have solid backups the injuries will be a wash at the end of the season. The problem is the backups have to be competitive. We are kind of a loser town because we have an excuse for every failing sports team. How else could you explain the 40 percent winning percentage? That number is for all Atlanta professional sports teams.

When you draft players with a history of injuries, you have to expect they’ll continue that trend in the pros where the game is faster, the guys are stronger, and guys hit harder. The Falcons top 2 picks from last season are prime examples of that principle. Even if you get a couple of good years out of these types of players, their “shelf life” is still typically less than others coming into a franchise without the baggage. Thomas D. blew the last draft with those two guys at the top and the Falcons defense is suffering for it this season.

Why can other players play with a hurt toe but little matty can’t? cj spiller of clemson played all year with the same injury and he’s a dynamic return man, running back and receiver. but little matty can’t drop back and throw the ball. what a wimp or someone who lost confidence and doesn’t want to play. tired of these losers. the media here is still pumping the guy. he’s been horrible this season. what will they say when the same crap happens next year. he’s not as good as they tried to sell us. simple as that.

The so-called HORRIBLE previous regime went to the Championship game in YEAR 1 and I don’t recall the previous coach getting fined from the NFL for losing his cool and attacking a player physically.
That is not a role model for “good character”, so I’m not surprised the players have since then had undisciplined incidents. How can you blame them, if the coach is setting the example.

I find it to be hilarious, when “some” bloggers come on here and defend a player for not being “MAN” enough to get on the field and earn his money and use excuses like “he wants to play but doctors don’t want him to play”
That’s a bunch of bull – do they have insiders as to what the doctors recommend? Do they have insiders to what conversations take place behind closed doors?
I’m pretty sure the doctors didn’t want McNabb to play with 2 broken ribs.
I’m pretty sure the doctors didn’t want their franchise quarterback in Detroit to play with a separated shoulder.
I’m pretty sure doctors didn’t want Kurt Warner to play 2 games later after a concussion or D Jackson in Philly.
I’m pretty sure the doctors didn’t want Brett Favre to play with a broken finger.

choke, i know why you do it. you try to see how many people you can piss off. Matt Ryan in year 2 is better than any quarterback we have had in 15 years. He is hurt and you know he would play if he could. I am and have been a falcons fan since bartkowski was our quarterback. watch them every sunday. I loved watching vick when he was a falcon but in terms of being a better quartback than ryan he is not. He was a more exciting player but when he was forced to stay in the pocket like when we played tampa, he struggled. he did not get his first 300 yard passing game until we played the steelers in like year 3 or 4(I have it recorded).
this coach we have is far better than Mora and our future is better with Ryan, turner and white than it ever was with vick, crumpler and white. Just look at how much better White and Jenkins have been with Ryan as compared to when they were with Vick. When he took off the recievers did not know what to do.
Have you ever had turf toe? no? If you did your research before you spoke you would know that turf toe can end your career.
If you liked vick better than ryan that is fine. but don’t continue to smash ryan because you dont like him. I might include that even toni dungi has compared him(ryan) to peyton manning.

(DL) One of the biggest issues with the Falcons this year is coaching. The Falcons have been to inconsistent on offense. We knew the defense would struggle because of their youth. Offensive Coordinator Mularkey needs to go. He has been given too much latitude in how the Falcons attack other defenses. We have too many weapons on offense for the struggles we have gone through.
Are we a passing team or running team? If we are a running team then the Falcons should have spent a draft choice or money on a “good” backup RB. If we are a passing team, than we should have went out and got a better replacement for WR – Douglas. Going after Charlie Weitz or Martz as a replacement OC makes sense.

choke, i know why you do it. you try to see how many people you can piss off. Matt Ryan in year 2 is better than any quarterback we have had in 15 years. He is hurt and you know he would play if he could.
So…………….
Based on your complaints and acknowledges you are more satisfied with “Individual” accomplishes, by stating Vick’s lack of 300 yard passing games.
Unfortunately, this is a “TEAM” game and WINNING & LOSING is all that matters in the big picture. Here are a few examples:
- Jay Cutler has passed for 4,000 yards (below .500 career record)
- Matt Schaub is on pace for 4,500 yards (below .500 career record)
Now take the CHOKE, he had a decent rookie season, but he had on his staff:
- Pro bowl back
- Pro bowl receiver (1,000+ season before the CHOKE arrived)
- New Head Coach
- New GM
- 1st round picks on the O-line (Vick had none)
Now, back to the “TEAM” goal success, here is what Vick & Team accomplished:
- Became 1st team in NFL history to beat Green Bay on road in playoffs
- Won 1st playoff game in “Sophomore” season (on the road)
- Won 2nd playoff game in 4th season
- Played in 1st Championship Game
What has the CHOKE accomplished as a team:
- 1st franchise team to be 1 and done in playoffs in decade
- 1st team in decade to lose to a team with worse record
- 1st team in decade to not lead team in playoffs in “Sophomore” season
- 1st franchise qb in decade not to win the division title
Other noteworthy accomplishments this team is on pace to do, is a major losing streak. They currently are 2-6 with 3 games remaining. I believe the longest such streak Vick and team had was 2-6, so unless the Falcons win the remaining 3 games, which I doubt, that would be the longest streak in the decade.
Now since you want to throw in individual stats, here are a few that the CHOKE has posted:
- 6 straight games with a PICK
- 22 PICKS in 25 games started
- In only playoff game, had 2 picks, 1 fumble, 1 SAFETY
- A QB rating that has dropped in 7 straight weeks
So, I’m confused how you figure this team is on the right path – that’s very odd, but then again, you love success

What scares me about Sam Baker is that he has a DIFFERENT injury every time he gets hurt. Same way he was in college.
I say go for a prime time OT or DE in this draft since the only good CB (Haden) will be gone by the time we draft. Draft some Iron Men that haven’t had an injury history in college. Or just draft CJ Spiller (all around game changer that will be a superstar in the NFL – no doubt) and trade the injury-prone Norwood. Sorry Jerious

There are two fingers to pint here:
1) Conditioning. The Falcons need a 12-month conditioning program. These players need to realize that the are getting paid a ton of money to do the thing they love and if they are lucky it may last 10 years or so. Take your off-seasoning conditioning serious.
2) Depth. The Falcons jettisoned a lot of players who might have filled some holes. You can’t just fill your roster with the 24 good players. You need 65.

Well choke since you want to focus on team achievment lets do a few. when vick went out and killed dogs he obviously was not too concerned with team achievments. when he went out of the stadium and flicking off our fans that was not for his commitment to team excellence.
When you start talking about team achievments lets talk about what has taken place in the last two years; we were projected to finish no better that 4-10 last season and our team went 11-5. If you know anything about football you must be able to look at our whole offense this year and know we are a better all around team than in the vick years( yes we led the league in rushing but were about 28th in passing). I do believe the teams vick played on had much better defensive talent than those of the past two years.
If you want to talk about what Ryan did in his first two seasons(offensive rookie of the year, 11-5 in his first season) and compare them to vick, Remember vick was never the starter from day 1 of his first year. chris chandler was the starter. Ryan was also elected as a team captain in his first year. If you are chosen as a team captain as a rookie that has got to be one of the best accomplishments that a person on a team can achieve(ultimate team respect

“I thought you liked stats not gossip”
The bottom line is, there have only been 2 playoff wins and 1 Championship Game appearance and they both belong to the former franchise qb
But if you want to talk about individual accomplishments, there have been 3 PRO BOWL selections at the qb position and once again, they all belong the former franchise qb
Even the owner has no respect for the CHOKE and was displayed by embracing the former franchise qb in the middle of the Georgia Dome and invited him to spend time with him over the summer.

In 1989 he won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Award in leading the Edmonton Eskimos to a 16-2 record, throwing for 4366 yards on 268 completions out of 517 attempts with 30 touchdowns to 18 interceptions. Plus Ham became the first CFL passer to rush for over 1000 yards with 1005 on 125 carries, with 10 rushing touchdowns.
Vick? Who?

Those that accepts mediocracy has no room to criticize failure.
I like how some people say “he is not a real quarterback” yet the current “real” quarterback can’t seem to win “real” games
So what’s the use of having a “real” quarterback if a “fake” quarterback has all the records
By the way, this “fake” quarterback will be seen in PRIME TIME when your “real” quarterback will be watching from his grandmother’s living room – AGAIN

The Intelligencer
The Michael Vick experiment doesn’t look quite so much like an experiment anymore. It looks like a success.
Vick has 11 touches in the last two games and among them are two touchdown runs, a touchdown pass, a 32-yard completion to set up a touchdown against the Giants, a 43-yard completion to set up a touchdown in Atlanta, a five-yard run for a first down and a five-yard run down to the 1-yard line to set up a touchdown against the Giants.
“It’s funny how you don’t hear anybody say, ‘Oh, Michael Vick is going to upset the offense’s rhythm’ anymore,” guard Todd Herremans said with a chuckle Monday. “I don’t think he’s upsetting our rhythm right now.”
Vick is no longer a work in progress. He’s an intriguing weapon that Eagles head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg are increasingly placing in critical situations.
After spending a year and a half in prison and not playing football for nearly three years, Vick is starting to look once again like the guy who went to three Pro Bowls for the Falcons between the 2002 and 2005 seasons.
“It’s great to have some plays in the offense where you can actually have some success,” Vick said after the Eagles beat the Giants 45-38 Sunday night at Giants Stadium. “I felt relaxed. I felt good. I felt myself again.”
Vick’s role has evolved since he made his Eagles debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Eagles third preseason game on Aug 28. He no longer is a Wildcat. He’s simply a quarterback like he was during his big years in Atlanta as a threat to run or throw whenever he’s on the field.
“The tough thing about him is you can’t view it as what everybody in the league refers to as Wildcat,” Giants defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan said. “He is a quarterback. You have to treat him like a quarterback.”
That means defenses can’t cheat up like they would against a pure Wildcat quarterback. They have to play the Eagles honest, since Vick is now throwing the ball so well. That makes him an even more dangerous runner.
“He’s a quarterback with great athletic ability and a great arm,” Reid said. “You’re talking about one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL before he was suspended there.”
Earlier this year, Vick was missing when he threw. He missed a wide-open DeSean Jackson on what would have been a 30-yard gain in San Diego. Now, he’s hitting those passes.
Advertisement In his first nine games after serving a two-game suspension, Vick was 3-for-9 for six yards. The last two, he’s 3-for-4 for 80 yards and a touchdown.
Similarly, he was 12-for-27 rushing (2.3 average) up through the Chargers game. During the Eagles’ four-game winning streak, he’s run 10 times for 66 yards (6.6 average) and two TDs.
He’s been almost unstoppable on third down, running seven times, converting six times, and gaining 68 yards on those seven runs – an average of 9.7 yards per carry.
“You know what he does – there are a lot of guys with his speed and quickness,” Reid said. “He’s very patient. He (receives) the ball first, and then he sees things set up and then – phew – he goes. The more he plays, the better he’s going to feel.”
Vick isn’t the only reason the Eagles have won four straight games, moved into first place in the NFC East and find themselves on the brink of their eighth playoff berth in the last 10 years.
But it’s not a complete coincidence that the offense has been rolling and the Eagles haven’t lost since Vick began making plays. Big plays.
“He’s really become a big part of our offense,” Herremans said. “What he’s able to do, it’s definitely something that teams have to game plan for. I don’t think of him as a gimmick or a novelty. He’s just a good player. He’s dangerous.”

People we need to be honest, and stop letting our emotions get in the way of the facts. If you’re going to quote stats at least do the research. Michael Vick threw for 337 yard in a game his first year as a starter for the Falcons.
Another interesting thing when people quote Michael Vick’s stats they always dismiss his rushing yards as though they didn’t count. However if you focus on his passing yards and rushing yards Vick has several games in his career where he has over 300 yards a game.
So why is it that so many people who quote Vick’s stats always dismiss or fail to mention his rushing yards? I say all of this because you may be in denial but Vick is a very good Quarterback. He has broken NFL records, and basically has done things that no other quarterback has ever done in the NFL.
Everyone consider this one thing. When you combine Michael Vick’s rushing yards, passing yards, passing touchdowns, and rushing touchdowns those numbers have been better than most quarterbacks in the league.

Since everyone seems to be comparing arms between Vick and Ryan and uncatchable balls just ask Roddy White. It’s amazing how one receiver can go from mediocre to Pro Bowl with a different QB. If you think about it, Matty Ryan maybe just as good as Jeff George or Chris Chandler back in the day. Good arm and that’s about it.

“If you want to talk about” Roddy White’s present success – know your facts.
In 2005 & 2006 Roddy White was in his 1st and 2nd season, which meant he was not expected to be the player that he is now.
Secondly, Roddy White emerged in 2007, with Joey Harrington and Chris Redman, in which he had his 1st 1,000 yard season.
The CHOKE had nothing to do with his development. If anything he has regressed this season, because the CHOKE has been exposed for the MEDIOCRE wannabe PRO QB

Redman – OUT; Charlie Parker Wilson – WHY?; DJ Shockley – OUT

TE – Excellent – Gonzalez, Peele are very strong; need a young one, where’s Martez Milner?
WR – Average. No hands. White/Jenkins – paycut. Douglass/Weems -backups. OUT: Finneran
OL – Average. Baker unreliable, Blalock-Dahl tough, McClure old; Clabo is a backup. OUT:Svitek

OK, let’s talk about the Jets vs Falcons…the Jets are more than likely going to win. Matt Ryan will play if and only if Michael Turner plays. The Falcons MAY end up with an 8-8 record, and the AJC will bend over backwards to blame injuries, the big bad hard schedule that the meanies in the NFL office forced upon the Falcons so unfairly, and will continue to heap praise on the coaches and Falcons front office because they just love this Smitty and Dimitroff team so darn much. Babineaux will still be a Falcon next season, more than likely so will Weems. The Falcons will be cleaning out their lockers after the last game of the season and everyone will tell themselves “we’ll get’em next season!! go team!!”……….that’s how it will go.

The injuries to Turner and Ryan were unfortunate because they came at a time when the offensive unit was finally beginning to show signs of being as good as the hype sounded in the off-season. Personally, I would like to see the Falcons become a great defensive team again like they were in years gone by, mostly a running team on offense, and “special” on special teams. As for the “curse”, I would love to see that in the rear view mirror, but if not, it doesn’t change how I feel about this team. As for all the haters on this blog, on both sides, you’re a waste of my time.

DLed, tell the guys to dress warm, expect snow, possibly A LOT on Sunday, with pretty windy conditions. Being from Philly, Matt will know what to expect. It’s 0 right now in NY but should warm up to 20-25 by Sunday and they are calling for us to be dumped on this weekend (6-12 inches). And tell them to pack the right kind of cleats!
GO BIRDS!!!

IT FIRST BECAME obvious, this feeling between Michael Vick and his new teammates, a couple of weeks ago in Atlanta. It was his homecoming game, as it were. It was where he scored his first touchdown for the Eagles and his teammates bounded off of the bench in celebration, where cornerback Sheldon Brown said that he and some of the players were telling each other before the game that they wanted to win it for Vick.
I mean, win one for Mike? Really? We all observe from a distance, and it was so hard to see or to understand. But it was real. There is no doubt that it was real, this bond between Vick and his new teammates.
And, now, this:
The Eagles’ players have unanimously voted Vick as the team’s recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award, given annually to the player on each NFL team who exemplifies “commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and courage.”
Guilty of horrific crimes. Sentenced to a federal prison term. Forfeited millions and millions of dollars. Back in the league for only a few months, only through the good graces of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Eagles coach Andy Reid. Now, a convicted felon honored by his teammates for overcoming a terrible situation into which he had put himself.
“I’m not sure you can explain it unless you’ve gone through it here with him,” Reid said yesterday. “Everybody is going to have their opinion on it, I’m sure. Until you’ve been with him for the hours that his teammates have been with him and seen him through all these different things that he’s had to go through, that time-tested part of it, you can’t appreciate it quite as much.
“I don’t expect everybody to understand it, no, but I think it’s a tribute when it’s a slam dunk by his teammates voting him that. It was just a unanimous vote there.”
That this is just a gut punch to the people who have opposed Vick’s reinstatement goes without saying. For them, a PETA spokesman said:
“The Philadelphia Eagles fumbled when they gave Michael Vick the Ed Block Courage Award, which was named after a man who advocated in behalf of abused children. Michael Vick should not be the person anyone points to as a model of sportsmanship, even though he has now exchanged dogs for touchdowns after serving time for extreme cruelty to animals. We wish him well in educating others, but this is not appropriate and does not mark a joyous moment in NFL history.”
It is hard to disagree with any of that. It does seem too soon to be celebrating Vick. It does not feel right – and this comes from somebody who thought Vick deserved a chance to play this year, somebody who was looking forward to seeing what he could do on the field.
But here is the thing: I did not get a vote and you did not get a vote. This is a players’ award, voted upon by players. And whatever your personal feelings, it is impossible not to be fascinated by this team’s embrace of Vick, right from the start.
“I never worried that guys wouldn’t accept me,” Vick said. “That probably was one of the last things on my mind. The most important thing was to get in here and get to know the guys and get acclimated in the city and playing football again. You just let things happen naturally. You just be yourself.”
This is more than just teammates supporting a teammate. It is clear that they like the guy. Talking to them through the season, it is clear that they thought the punishment for the crime was so severe, prison-wise and especially financially, only because Vick was a celebrity. Their inclination as fellow celebrities was to root for him, and as fellow teammates to root for his ability to help them on the field. But the feelings still ended up going deeper, and this award demonstrates it.
“It means a great deal,” Vick said. “I’ve only been in this locker room for 3 1/2 months. For those guys to feel that way about me, it means a lot to me. The bond that I have with the players on this team and the way we’ve jelled has been outstanding.”
Someone asked Vick what kind of courage he demonstrated, per the award.
“I’ve had to overcome a lot, more than probably one single individual can bear,” he said. “Take a look at what I’ve been through. You ask certain people to walk in my shoes, they probably couldn’t do it – probably 95 percent of the people in this world. Because nobody had to endure what I’ve been through, situations I’ve been put in, situations I’ve placed myself in, decisions that I’ve made, whether they were good or bad. There are always consequences behind certain things and there are repercussions behind them, too. Then you have to wake up every day and face the world, whether they perceive you in the right perspective or it’s a totally different outlook on you.
“You just have to be strong and believe in yourself and be optimistic. That’s what I’ve been able to do and that’s what I display.”
When you talk to Vick, it sometimes takes him a minute to get to the key point: situations I’ve placed myself in. That is what rankles for some, still, that minute it sometimes takes. But it is all part of a longer process.
Anyway, Vick said, “The thing I told Roger [Goodell] was that, 4 or 5 years from now, when I come to him, I’ll be able to say everything I told you I was going to do, I’m still doing it. That’s what I pride myself on. That’s my focus and that’s my goal.”
That might have seemed a more appropriate time for an award such as this one, not now. Then again, this is all about a bond within a locker room, a place that none of us can hope to understand from the outside
