Falcons: Ryan may have some limitations

Carolina's Richard Marshall (31) came down with Matt Ryan's high pass that was intended for Michael Jenkins in the fourth quarter. (David T. Foster III/Charlotte Observer).

Carolina's Richard Marshall (31) came down with Matt Ryan's high pass that was intended for Michael Jenkins in the fourth quarter. (David T. Foster III/Charlotte Observer).

ONE GAME FROM FIVEHUNDREDVILLE – The 28-19 loss to Carolina may be the low point for the Falcons under second-year head coach Mike Smith.

They have played hard in every game over the 26-game Smith era, but it may have been just the second time that they were defeated when they were favored. (You guys can look that one up, but I know they were favored to win on the road in Arizona for the playoff game last year.)

But the schedule doesn’t get any easier. They travel to rickety Giants Stadium for a showdown with Tom Coughlin and the G-men, who are 5-4 and have been stewing about it over their bye week.

When considering the Falcons schedule this season  — four games against teams coming off byes -– and the aftermath of the DeAngelo Hall incident, it doesn’t appear that the Falcons have many friends at the league office. The schedule is atrocious and how Hall got away without being fined is one of the great mysteries of our time. Hall did say he was going to give his “peeps” a call.

After rolling back down I-85 late last night, I had a little extra time to think about the five things we learned from the game.

1. The Falcons still don’t have a left cornerback. The Falcons knew that Tye Hill probably wasn’t the answer when they traded for him, but were likely hoping that by acquiring him and Brian Williams before the outset of the season, that the other corners would step up their games. Brent Grimes played much stronger, but his man was still open. It’s probably time to go ahead and include rookie Christopher Owens in the rotation at left cornerback. At least get him some spot duty.

2. Matt Ryan may have some limitations. One NFL quarterback coach told me and a few other friends at the NFL

Get you a Matt Ryan Fathead image for your fan room.

Get you a Matt Ryan Fathead image for your fan room.

Combine last spring that he wasn’t completely sold on Matt Ryan. Stunned and perplexed, we  asked why? The coach said that Falcons offense was so simple last year that teams would figure it out. He said with a 1,700-yard back, that all Ryan had to do last season was find the single safety and throw away from him. The Falcons knew this. That’s why they spent most of their offseason working on the passing attack and why they went out and got Tony Gonzalez. One other thing, the second knock on Ryan coming out of the draft was that he sailed passes to the left. Both of the interceptions were passes to the left on Sunday. The No. 1 knock was he threw too many interceptions, but that was blamed on the quality of the Boston College receivers. (Matt has a Fathead deal. You can get a life-sized image of Ryan in the Falcons’ throwback jersey at Fathead.com.)

3. Where in the heck is John Abraham? With teams knowing that at least one receiver (usually the one guarded by the left cornerback) is going to be open, they are running their “quick game” stuff against the Falcons. Slants and quick outs to get the ball out fast. Rarely did Jake Delhomme take a seven-step drop and drive the ball up-field. So Abraham and the rest of the defensive line don’t have enough time to get to the quarterback like they did in the first half against Washington when they had five sacks. But still Abraham only has 3.5 sacks. I’m inclined to concur with Jeff Schultz that the 16-plus sack Abraham from 2008 has been abducted by aliens.

4.  Long snapper might not be long for the roster spot. Had too much other stuff going on with Turner being hurt and Ryan’s picks and by the time I tried to find long snapper Bryan Pittman, punter Michael Koenen or kicker Jason Elam, they were on one of the buses. But clearly the timing was off on the 34-yard field goal kick and Elam wasn’t happy about it. But when you got four hours to drive you can come up with some theories. My neighbor George – a season ticket holder and Falcons road warrior – and I were wondering if the Falcons were trying to draw the Panthers offsides (they only needed an inch) and maybe somebody forgot to tell Elam? Maybe they weren’t supposed to kick it. Just line up try to draw them offsides and then if the Panthers didn’t jump, just take the penalty and kick it from 39 yards?

5. The Falcons can block kicks. A big special teams play got lost in the shuffle. Defensive end Chauncey Davis busted through to block a Panthers 51-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter. The blocked field goal was the first for the Falcons since Nov. 30, 2008 at San Diego. Earlier this season, cornerback Brian Williams blocked a Carolina punt in Week Two. “Me, Jamaal (Anderson) and Babs (Jonathan Babineaux) had a great push and once we get those two steps we have to throw our hands up,” Davis said. “The ball was coming. We got a great push, got the guys knocked back and I got my hands up.”

Falcons will find out more about Michael Turner's ankle sprain today. If it's a high ankle sprain, he could miss a lot of action. (Chuck Burton/Associated Press).

It had to be a long ride back to Flowery Branch for the Falcons. They kicked away a winnable game, running back Michael Turner might be out for awhile and their second-year quarterback has to find his magic for them to make a playoff run.

“It’s was real tough,” Davis said. “We had plenty of opportunities to take over the game. We just kept making mistakes.”

I am not too worried as, this team was in the dumps two years ago. I have alot of faith in the coaching staff and Dimitroff.
1. It takes time to build a quality team that wins every year in the NFL

2. Defense has lost a bunch of big games for us, not Matt Ryan (remember this is only his second year, hes not going to be a drew brees or tom brady this early, also if you are going to counter how bout Rothleisberger , wrong Pitts defense was awesome when he was QBing so his mistakes weren’t so magnified.
3. A few more free agent and draft pieces will move us a little better next year, I definately see how they are building this team for longevity which I like. I alway hate to the Falsons good one year and then crappy the next.
4. I hate to say it but Van Gorder is one of the reasons for the Falcons defense being so bad, he has that bend but dont break coaching style which I hate. even when he was at UGA he hasnt changed, he’s a good coach but no rex ryan or greg williams. He probably needs more advice from Mike Smith as when he was the d-coordinator at Jax, he had them as one of the top defenses every year because he likes to attack.
Have Faith we will end up about 10-6 which might get us in. Still a winning season, but this is probably New Orleans year or New England’s. Our’s is probably next year, as Greg Williams will take a head coaching job and Leave New Orleans next year and Matt Ryan will get more experience with NFL Defenses, and we can add more defensive pieces.

Watched the first half of MNF and Flacco didn’t look stellar at all. Our birds played with a lot more enthusiasm than either the Ravens or Browns, and at least we could score. Tonight’s game almost went to halftime without any score. Snelling will have to buckle up for the next game, Turner is out for the game. I don’t expect to see much of Norwood either as he is still under repair. We really need some 360 # linemen both OL and DL. Lofton can really hold the middle. I noticed the past several games than Elan has been shading the left post, and now it’s wide left, has his leg not fully recovered and does he have to “force” the kick to get it up, which messes up his rhythm? At least our game was a lot more watchable than tonite’s dull MNF. Here come the Giants!

Hi, it’s Mike, y’know? Too bad the Falcons don’t play a really bad team like the Browns twice a year. Of course when the Falcons last played them… ATLANTA (AP) — Michael Vick sat on the Georgia Dome turf, looking around in disbelief while the boos came at him from all directions.
He lost the ball, his helmet — and the game. Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham did an excellent job of mixing in his multiple defensive schemes and disguising coverages, which disrupted the flow of the Falcons’ passing attack. Grantham also utilized ROLB Kamerion Wimbley as a spy on Michael Vick (above) in third-down situations, which forced Vick to stay in the pocket in critical third-down situations. Even though the Falcons had over 149 yards rushing the Browns didn’t allow any explosive running plays. The Browns continue to struggle on the offensive side of the ball. The Falcons’ defense did a good job of restricting Cleveland’s running lanes and forcing the Browns into a one-dimensional attack through the air. However, QB Charlie Frye did a good job of managing the game, taking what the defense gave him and didn’t make any critical game-changing mistakes.
Vick threw two interceptions and had a careless fumble with 2:18 remaining, allowing the Cleveland Browns to escape with a 17-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. For the second week in a row, the Falcons (5-4) lost to one of the NFL’s worst teams. Again, Vick took the brunt of the blame, turning a once-promising season into an increasingly desperate situation — especially with a rash of injuries on defense. “I take sole responsibility on the offensive side,” he said, shaking his head. “It hurts.” Atlanta was coming off a 30-14 loss at Detroit, only the second win of the year for the Lions. The Browns (3-6) had dropped three of four before they knocked off the Falcons in front of 70,000 stunned fans at the Georgia Dome.

Hmmmmm, sound familiar?

Like I mentioned before, Matt Ryan has the tools and will get better, its hit or miss right now as its his second year. I dont see much upside right now in the defense right now, gorder is a excellent college defensive coach, but he might be over his head in the pros. We will see next year if they can find some serious help in the secondary. I dont think Mike smith will have patience with a mediocre d-fense next year. He prob will have to find a replacement with his type of baltimore attack thinking..
I am not sure if Mike calls the plays or not, but it really looks like he’s trusting gorder with the play calling and gorder’s getting burned by the O-coordinators in the NFL.

I said it from the start you should have got a defensive player. Matt should be a third rounder at best no more. His arm was weak at BC and that a fact and also for the falcons. They could have got a QB in the late 1Th round and got a good defensive with the third round. They pump this guy up at draft as they will other QB in the first round. who are first round bust . Matt first will not pass good then he will get hurt because he is scared and all the NFL know it know now. His are is weak!!!! Just like the QB from Georgia . Look at the money they pay these guys and the media pump them up to be all world and they are not all county! Redmond could do just As good and save a ton of money . Sam Baker is a bust .
Again the media pump these guy to be all that and a bag of chips and they are not all hype. Matt Ryan turn to all punk just apply heat and he melts like cheese!! Better than Mike vick my AZZ!! Mike had no team . Ryan has all the tool around and just look at him punk out!! Mike INt’s were a lot better passer rateing Mike was in the top ten in TD . Mike last year 20 TD and 1039 yard rushing. Even washington QB has a better passer rateing and he has far less tool to work with! Mike are is stronger than Matt. you Listen to the hype.
look at the play!! Matt has how many 1th rounder on his team both side of the ball . vick had how many? Matt has a far better team. and when heat is apply with all those tool he is a patty melt!!

Give Owens a shot. Can’t get any worse at that position. Get rid of Elam now. Find anyone and give it a shot. Ryan needs to sit for the first quarter. Let him watch. Just might get his attention. Refs are not doing the Falcons any favors. First quarter Carolina receiver pushes off of Hill , catches the ball and steps out of bounds in front of the ref. No call. Gonzalez got mugged later in the qauarter with the defender’s right arm around his waist pulling him away from the ball. No call. Flustered!

Deffense wins championships.
talk about matt ryan all you want but if the falcons defense continues to be ranked top 10 in almost every category. FROM BEHIND…

his development will suffer naturally. that being said 2010 is db happy. if they draft another rookie cb i will not be happy.

im not against them choosing rookies but i am against rookies at cb. id rather have a rookie challenging decoud+more or stephen nicholas than have another rookie cb in the mix. grimes is leaving however i think that he should come back for special teams being that al Harris is also leaving and any veteran we sign at corner will not play special teams.brian williams is also leaving but i dont think he should be resigned due to the fact that he is at the end of his career and coming of a bad knee injury.

if the falcons are pick happy/add deffensive depth, i believe matt ryan will be a whole lot better not so pressured quarterback. think about these pairs
tom brady-asante samuels/elis hobs
pmannin-bob sanders
favre-charles woodson
favre-antoine winfield
brees-darren sharper

what most of you dont realize is that Ryan wasnt that great of a QB in college, so why do you expect him to get in the NFL and now all of a sudden he is the greatest.HE STUNK then and he STINKS now. Stop making excuses about we have a tough schedule, we cant play teams like Detroit forever so that our QB can look like he belongs in the league. He cant play under pressure, and stop acting like punks saying he is still young the guy is 24, we have kids being killed on the battle field at age 18 so man up quit

Most of the Ryan haters are either morons or lonely, bitter people who just want to tear down.
I don’t have a problem with discussion about problems with Ryan’s game.
If someone points out, “Ryan has happy feet for some reason” or “Ryan is not making all his reads” that is cool.
If someone just criticizes his ability or suggest he is a bust because he hasn’t “carried” the team a few times…that is just idiotic.
He is in the league one and a half seasons.
He has made some really big plays.
Maybe he didn’t “win” the game in dramatic fashion.
So what?
Give him time.
The problem with the “noodle arm” and the vick supporters is that they are here ONLY to tear down…not discuss.

The problem is the haters are impatient and unreasonable.
Give Ryan as many seasons as Vick had.
Give him as many seasons to get it together that Eli Manning had.
Then let’s talk.

The problem with the haters is they are impatient and unreasonable.

Granted I’ve only read a few of these comments but here is the problem with the offense. Matt Ryan is NOT the problem. The problem are:
1. Michael Jenkins will not catch a pass over the middle. He’s a liability because this forces Matt Ryan to over throw toward the sidelines when Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez are doubled.
2. Ovie Mughelli(sp)the fullback will not block one-on-one. This is why Matt Ryan has the “happy-feet”. He’ll chip and help but not go head to head.
3. Matt Ryan is forcing the ball to Gonzalez at times because he is the reliable catcher and the opposing defenses drop a linebacker and the bring the safety over to cover him.
4. They need to do more of the short screens to the wide receivers at the beginning of the game to bring the defensive backs up to cover and then do double moves for the deep pass. The first pass Matt Ryan threw deep last year isn’t going to happen anymore.
5. Where is Finnerman? We need a possession type receiver? Or, Marty Booker?
6. Go find a big back to complement Michael Turner. Where is T. J. Duckett?

Defensive Solutions:
1. Abraham must be playing injured with the adominal strain suffered last year.
2. Play Bireman and Jamal Anderson on the same side like was done at the beginning of the season.
3. Where is Coy Wire since the New Orleans game? I didn’t see him Sunday.

Just some thoughts.

FANTASY FOOTBALL UPDATE:

Matt Ryan, QB, Falcons ($7.01 M). A Panthers fan I know compared Ryan to Jake Delhomme. Granted, it was a bit unfair as Ryan has thrown more TDs, but it just shows how far the sophomore has fallen. In draft-and-trade leagues, you’d be stuck hoping for a rebound from Ryan. In salary cap, you have no such obligations. Ryan should not be anywhere near your squad until he puts together a couple of good games. Even then I’d have some reservations about using him unless it’s in a dream matchup. (@NYG, TB, Phi, NO)

What’s missing is the ‘run’. We’re 1-dimensional. Snelling/Stecker fill in good, but are not Norwood or Turner, so without those threats, we’re vulnerable. Missing FG’s and INT’s will kill us. This team doesn’t score 45 every game like the Saints, Colts, Patriots. We should get Norwood back soon, Turner in 2 weeks…hold your breath through Giants, Tampa…Philly has the Falcons number.

Matty Ice is still a 2nd yr QB. Look at what Favre, Manning, Brady did in year-2. Lots of INT’s. He’ll be fine.

Next 3-4 weeks are rough. Prediction: 9-4.

I noticed ITpDude comments about left vs right corners and throws… You said the weak DB would be @ the left.. Would that be in a Cover 2 situation ?? Cover 3 ?? A free safety delayed blitz ? A 2 deep Zone with rotating free safety or strong safety depending on the position of the Tight end ?? A double ended stunt with the left or right tackle being the hook holding up 2 blockers ?? A zone defensive end cover in zone on the left or right side ?? All depends on down, distants, timing as well as game time..
Matt will be fine, He needs some quick 10 yard outs to get his confidence up and a few hitch and go to the side lines so only receivers have a chance or it is out of bounds.. 10 yard crossing routes are included..

We have got to get the running game going against New York to take the pressure off of Matt Ryan. He is still a young QB but has the responsiblitly of a more tenured QB because of all of the accomplishments from last season. Unfortunately, this is a new season. Defensive Coordinators have film and tape of his habits, strengths, weaknesses and so far they have used last years success against him. Matt Ryan simply has to play better. No one is doubling Roddy or Jenkins. All of the coverage on 3rd down shifts to Gonzo. We have to be more creative and decisive or we need to start getting ready for the draft.

No pass rush no corners is a recipe for disaster. Bend but don’t break. Ball controlling offense. Milk the clock with the running game. (That’s what we were supposed to do, not allow others do it to us) Really did we belive that Tye Hill could help us? He was a first rounder and St Louis allowed him to leave for nothing. He looked out matched, overwhelmed and out of postition in the first quarter. In the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters he looked like a good teammate that could no longer give up yards and points from his spot on the bench. We will have to address that position or things will only get worse. Our little secret is out. Still some pretty solid free agent (older) corners at home on the couch. Thomas Dimitroff use some of thoose anytime minutes and get us some help.

Okay, I’ll say it. I’m a Falcons fan. I can say it because I’ve suffered through guys named Dennis Claridge, Terry Nofsinger, Junior Coffee..etc and et. al. I say it even though the Falcons will go down as infamously as the Boston team that sent Babe Ruth to the Yankees… (for what???!? God only knows.) Not only have we been losers for decades but we can truthfully say that for most of that time nobody in authority from 1966 to the present ever knew what talent looked like. Lots of teams can say they passed on players who started for other teams. Not many can say they traded away Hall of Fame players while starting guys like…(sigh) Billy Joe Tolliver. I can understand getting it wrong once or twice but we sent guys away from here who not only started, they earned super bowl rings( Bret Favre, Deion Sanders, R. C. Thielman, Gerald Riggs, (oh lord is the list that long?) and at least two will be in the Hall of Fame. But we still can’t go out and recognize talent. And you know folks, recognizing talent is a talent unto itself. But unless you have someone in a position of authority to recognize what a good scout has brought in we will throw it out and it will walk straight into the hall of fame. The cornerback we need is out there. So is the left tackle and running back. Of course there are receivers available. look at Miles Austin in Dallas or Colston in N’Orleans. And how much would it have taken to keep Calvin Johnson at home. I know the talent is there because too many teams other than the Falcons are finding it. I only hope to live long enough to see us win a SuperBowl. Hell, I hope to live long enough to see them win this weekend.
Traditionally fellas, they don’t win this next game in New York. Thats been the book on these guys. Win the ones you should lose once and a while and lose the ones you should win all the time. Don’t bet the house on em this weekend fellas.
