Falcons: 5 things we learned from the scrimmage

THE DOME –  In the aftermath of last night’s scrimmage, here are five things that we learned about the Falcons.

1. Backup safety Jamaal Fudge, the former Clemson standout, can deliver the big hit (see above). With William Moore down for two to four weeks perhaps he’ll jump in and battle Thomas DeCoud for the starting strong safety spot.

2. Precision passing attacks never look get early. Too many dropped balls and high passes.

3. Christopher Owens showed that he can play. He made some nice plays on the ball and in run support. The battle for the left cornerback is heating up.

4. Running back Jerious Norwood ran more determined. And, oh yeah, he’s still pretty darn fast.

5. Quarterback Matt Ryan ran very well on the scrimmage’s first play. He ran up the middle for 12 yard gain.

About to head down to the field for the Mock Game at the “Roam the Dome” event.  Will try to learn some more things here.

D-Led – thanks, short but informative. Will the scrimmage last night be on video anywhere? I havent read anything about how TG did last night?

Ditto — will there be any video of either the scrimmage at Brookwood or the simulated game at the dome today?

It was terrible the way Gwinnett County Police Department towed so many cars unnecessarily……

D-Led – anyway we can have a direct link to our Bird ‘Cage? Allot of us go back and forth between the 2 best blogs on the fish wrapper! It would save 2 clicks from your “all ajc blogs”. Thanks!

No wonder the AJC is going under….”Rome the Dome” as the website headline? Shame you fired all the people that would catch that mistake before putting it out.

I went and got there a little early so I was able to park in the back parking lot at Brookwood Elementary. I left early as well so I would avoid the chaos leaving that area. Walking back up Holly Brook Road there must have been 5 or 6 tow trucks and quite a few police cars as well up beyond the elementary school driveway. I kind of felt bad for the people who were going to find out their cars had been towed.

D-Led, All reports I have heard coming out of training camp practices from reporters say that DJ Shockley is out performing Redman. Does this mean DJ is slotted as the #2 QB until Redman out performs him?

Jason,

Were you one of those that got fired? Sure sounds like it….Did it ever occur to you that “Rome the Dome” was purposely written that way?

D-Led ,

Thanks for the update.

It’s funny because on AtlantaFalcons.com they refer to it as Roam the Dome. So Big Ray why do you think it was “purposely written that way”.

In one of the releases the Falcons called It “Rome The Dome” likely confusing our folks. I confirmed with the PR staff yesterday that it was Roam the Dome.

JJ: Here’s the link. D3 is doing great. http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-falcons-fans/2009/08/07/lofton/?cxntfid=blogs_atlanta_falcons_fans Are asking for a permalink it both of the blogs. Will check with our folks to see how to do that.

BILL: I would not agree with that assessment. Both have looked good. We’ll get a sense of how they are ranked based when the coaches announce the QB rotation for Detroit. I think we’ll see a lot of Redman and Shockley. Ryan for series or two. JPW may get some mopup dut.

“Are asking for a permalink it both of the blogs. Will check with our folks to see how to do that.” – yes sir.

For ex. (from the ‘cage )D3 has a direct link to your blog, vice-versa would make it easier and add hits for both sites. If possible, not a big deal, thanks. I really want to find some video of the scrimmages (FRI/SAT) to no avail. J.Mike has some video but I’m looking for the actual scrimmage, not EVERYTHING but the scrimmage. I know you do not run the cameras, you write. But you may have some insider info?

Grip, Chris Owens has some nice footage on Youtube where they break down some of his skills and instincts at his position, pretty good watch. He really looked good in college, although at a smaller school. I think the main question is whether or not he can carry it over into the pros.

man, it was great news to hear Roddy is back, and here for the long haul – but it was sad to have read it first of AJC.com……football season has begun, i think its time for some beat writing, no?

Come on DLed – I hear you ask questions a lot on falcons site, and speak on espn – you should be beatin it up for us fans. Cant let D3 take your readers/commenter; cause you are the jam.

….just sayin…

can’t wait to get to a training session and see TG and WR doing what they do.

….I hope the team doesn’t pull a full metal jacket on him in his sleep…good-good to know that he was at least working out during his hold out, he should fit right back in…

I liked the timing for both Roddy and TD. They both come out looking good.

Roddy got paid, but didn’t miss much time.

TD showed some mettle by not caving after Harry went down, and by not-so-subtly implying with Ferguson and Booker that blocking comes first in this offense, anyway.

That said, I went to Roam the Dome today and saw Matty Ice lock in on HOF Tony Gonzalez. Whew! A man amongst boys.

Roddy will be lucky if Matt even looks his way this year.

@Matty Ice:

You have an identity crisis. Your name is actually D.J. Shockley.

It still cracks me up when people try to find fault with Matt Ryan.

It’s like the People’s Front of Judea in Monty Python’s Life of Brian asking, “Okay, apart from the roads, the sewers, the aqueduct (etc.), what have the Romans ever done for us?”

The Falcons WAY OVERPAID yet again for one pf their players, Roddy White.
There is no way in the h&ll Roddy White deserves to be paid $50 million dollars.
Looks like Arthur Blanks fingerprints are all over this deal!

@Some things never change:

Yeah, I’ve been shocked at how the price of a no. 1 receiver has gone up, but I’m glad this deal got done. We were asking for trouble when we locked in Jenkins at over twice the price of Roddy at the time, while Roddy was out-performing him big-time.

Anyway, I’d rather have Arthur Blank paying a little more to keep serious talent here, rather than go back to the bad old days when the Smith family let guys like Deion go because we were too cheap. And remember, people thought we overpaid for Turner and Ryan, too.

Finally, I don’t think this wrecks us with the cap or anything. If this were the Braves, we’d be applauding the ownership for putting out the cash!

Roddy deal is 6 years for $50 mill but only $18 mill guaranteed, according to sources.

Year 3 is when good WR’s typically break out, and he did that in 2007 with 1200 yds and 6 TDs. Last year he went even bigger with nearly 1400 yards and 7 TDs. He is certainly one of the top young WR’s in the league. I’m fine with the deal since I heard only $18 mill was guaranteed.

Nite Owl

Thanks for the info, Willie. That doesn’t sound bad at all. If he keeps producing, he’s definitely worth it. We’ve got the nucleus of the offense wrapped up for a few years: Ryan, Turner, Roddy, Jenkins.

I’m also liking the young talent we’re accumulating on defense. If the young guys pan out, we’ve got secondary and D-Line talent coming out our ears for years to come. Someone will need to step up and replace Abraham (who’s not nearly done yet) and Peterson, but we’ll have a couple more drafts before then.

Especially curious about cornerback. Will we end up with a really deep group of young guys? Are the draft picks for real? Can Grimes hold down a spot? Or are we taking a bunch of OK/mediocre guys and hoping something sticks? It sure sounds like Chris Owens may be for real, and William Moore too.

It’s good to know that we can get so much out of one draft, and now TD shows he knows how to handle keeping our big talent here, even with a holdout. Let’s get this thing started!

I have followed the Falcons since 1968 and I have never seen this organization as stable and mature as it is now. I am amazed at the transition from Losersville to excellence. With the signings of White and Gonzalez it just validates last years achievements. I believe this is not a one year fluke team. From the owner , the management on down to the coaches. I am started to feel pride in the Falcons. Pinch me. I grew up cheering and hoping but always knowing in my heart all we had was a every year loser. Yeh I remember the 12 and 4 season and all it led to was Danny White and those killer Cowboys.

Since Roddy has signed a 6 years for $50 million deal…. Roddy had 1 year left on his rookie deal so does that make his deal technically a 7 year $50 million deal ?

ATLJBO, Nope, it`s 6 years starting this year and the final year is probablly voidable for somewhat protection to the Org. in the event a new CBA aggrement.

This contract (RW-6yrs-$50 million)isn’t worth the paper it was written
on.It only forces the Falcons to pay more than they had to under the current contract. The MINUTE Roddy White decides he is unhappy with it, he will hold out again. Hey Dimitroff, quit being Arthur “overpay” Blank’s freaking lap dog. As long as we continue to do things Arthur’s way instead of the “Patriot” way AKA the RIGHT way we will NEVER win a freaking Super Bowl!!

I finally trained my lapdog Dimitroff how to cave in and overpay our players. Soon I will pass Daniel Snyder as the best owner in the NFL.
Why should I not overpay Roddy just because he has a current contract?
