Falcons have some training camp issues

Finally, Falcons football season is here!

Pro Bowler Roddy White.

Pro Bowler Roddy White.

Some long days ahead, but hey, I could be hanging roof shingles or operating the old chop saw cutting steel (an old summer job while in college) for a living.

That’s pretty hard work. Speaking of hard work. I must thank my colleague Chris Vivlamore for catching the first two days of camp for me while I get to hit the Family Reunion. (Should be a blast. All of the rowdy Uncles are coming!!! They are getting old, but they are still rowdy.)

Peria Jerry's five-year deal got done late Thursday evening.

Peria Jerry

With the signing of defensive tackle Peria Jerry to a five-year contract, there is only one pressing matter before the Falcons put on the pads and start doing some live hitting.

What affect will the lack of a contract extension for wide receiver Roddy White have on the team? It’s clear the Falcons want to work something out. It appears they are working on their timetable and not White’s, who wanted a deal done before the season started.

One long-time league observer pointed out that the season starts when you put on the pads, not with the first regular-season kickoff.

White could take the high road. Come in, keep grinding away and let the negotiations take their course.

Or White, who held out during his rookie season, could go Rod Tidwell on the

Rod Tidwell was the Arizona Cardinals to "Show him the Money!"

Cuba Godding Jr. as Rod Tidwell.

Falcons and start yelling “Show me the money!” We’ll have to keep track of White’s situation.

Quick review: White is set to make $2.28 million and could be bound to Falcons for two years. His leverage is weak. Top receivers – Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald ($10 million), Tampa Bay’s Antonio Bryant ($9.98 million) and Buffalo’s Lee Evans ($9.3 million) – are making four times as much as White.

Here’s my list of 5 questions that the Falcons will have to answer during training camp.

1. How will offensive coordinator incorporate Tony Gonzalez into the offense?

2. Can quarterback Matt Ryan continue to blossom as an NFL quarterback?

3. Will the offensive line be even nastier this year?

4. What are the Falcons going to do at defensive end opposite of John Abraham?

5. Which undrafted free agent is going to step forward and earn a spot on the roster?

Up early, eh?
Any reason why the Falcons timing and Roddy’s timing aren’t in synch?

But if Roddys contract is the biggest issue coming in camp, compared to past years, I will gladly take it.

I was 5 minutes away from being “First”, oh well will have to serttle for second and in 2009 the Falcons will be third in the NFC south, they should be able to beat Tampa twice so maybe they will be 5-11, but 4-12 just sounds right.

D Led, I think if our offensive coordinator can get the right scheme going with Gonzo and Turner we could be San Diego South (06-07 SD) with Ryan playing the part of Rivers, Turner playing the part of former teammate LT, and Gonzo playing the part of Gates. The big difference however is that we have a stud receiver in White and San Diego lacked that when their offense was at its peak. A lot of options, a lot!! We need to get the White deal done. Tell me the last time we had a receiver with his ability. Rison?

Falcons will be 4&12? Any reasoning behind that prediction?Thats what I thought.Even without Roddy this easily a playoff team.Much better all around team then the aints. The Big lazy will not win 5 games this year and the falcons will easily sweep them. That being said I hope that they can work out something with Roddy he is a great addition to this team.GO FALCONS 09!!!!!

J Dub, I am not a Saints fan, BUT, Greg Williams in the new D Coordinator in the NO and he should make that D-Fense much better than it was last year. But, you wanna talk about leaky defense, who will play corner for the Falcons and are you dependeing on that Rookie to improve that 5 yrds per carry average allowed rush defense. I do like Van Gorder and Smith running your defense but just don’t think your team has the talent to compete on that side of the ball.

Vaughn T the falcons will rise at the end of 2009, that is only because that is when their schedule is the easiest, but it will be to late by then, you all willl beat the Jets even if it is in New York iin Dec and should beat the Bills in Atlanta unless TO just goes off and abuse those sorry CBs of yours but he will probably go off on his own teammates by then and not be on the team and you shoukd again beat tampa at home. But, you team will already have 10-11 loses by then. I wouldn’t really call that rising up. It is more like getting up off the ground after you have been knocked down then stomped by the rest of the teams on your schedule. You better get game one or you are looking at a 0-3 start for sure.

I also expect Chevis Jackson to produce this year and we picked up a few DBs in the draft that will surely produce the competition we need to step up the secondary. 1) How long will it take for DeCoud and Moore to be starting in tandem at both safety spots? Young, gifted, athletic Hard hitters.

2) How much will #19 be missed?

3) Trey Lewis is no punk. Peria Jerry and Lewis (if healthy) make for a nasty interior. Will we see that?

4) How will we finally get a chance to use Norwood (#32)? If used correctly, he, Snelling (#44) and of course The Burner make for the best running back group in the NFC South.

5) Who will get the first BLAST in training camp?? Without Milloy around, I’m putting my money on Nichols (#54) to blow somebody up.

J Dub, Abraham is not even a every down player anymore. He is a situational pass rusher that wants a raise and when Abraham is unhappy with is contract, remember his past history with the Jets, he will lay down on you. Plus, do you think he will stay healthy this year and what about6 Micheal Turner, he carried a heavy load last year. I think this year so will see some wear from last season. Before you pull Norwood out of your hind parts, He never stay healthy for and entire season. When the team travel to away games, they should put a sticker on Norwood that says fragile.

The Falcons are a good team, do doubt about it.

The problem they face is in the first three games of the schedule. All three teams we play (Panthers, Dolphins, Patriots) are all also very good teams. If we can win 2 of 3 there, we are play off bound. Lose all 3, season is over. Lose 2 of 3, its a crap shoot.

Anyway, the Falcons need to extend White’s contract. Not a whole lot more money, but more years. That way, he will feel confident about his financial future when he has to go up and get one over the middle with Julius Peppers baring down on him.

J Dub, so you believe the Falcons will lose to CHI at home but beat DAL on the road, I don’t think so, if anything it will be a win against the Bears and a loss to the Cowboys. I also don’t think your team will sweep the Saints. SF on the the road is tough even when SF is having a down year, an east coast team playing on that west coast after the beat down Tom Brady is going to give you will be tough.

Mars,

The Falcons and the Saints are big rivals because both franchises historically suck. The Falcons know alot about losing as well. Come on now don’t pretend like the Falcons ruled a decade like the SF ruled the 80’s, or the way NE is ruling 2000. Lets keep it real. The Falcons have never, ever, had back to back winning seasons. And, usually when their fans are so excited about the upcoming seasoon like 1999, they suck. Remember that season, Dan Reaves released all those Vets that helped him get to the Super Bowl the prior year. Yes, I see a replay of 1999.
no Brookings, no Lawyer Maloy, no Foxworth, no Grady Jackson and a couple of others mean no winning season for the Falcons in 2009.

Yes we need to sign Roddy, yes we need to incorporate our new HOF tight end, but as always, the KEY will end indeed be (again) Michael Turner, the O-line and running the ball. If they run like the 1st 3/4’s of 2008, then we’re good, if they run like the last few games and playoffs? We’re in trouble.

Falcondore

July 31st, 2009

Nativebird, that’s exactly why Gonzalez will play a huge role. Teams can’t load 8 in the box on obvious running situations now because we have a reliable target to burn them with. I think you’ll see holes opening a plenty for Turner and Norwood to take advantage of.

The schedule is definitely tougher than last year, but this is a better team than last year. I think we are looking at a potential juggernaut on offense with our Big 4. We will not be nearly as prolific on defense, but if you score 27-30 points per game you are going to win more often than not.

Just like any year you are going to win some games that you shouldn’t and lose some games that you shouldn’t. We may destroy the Pats and get crushed by the Jets. All I know is that the Falcons will be a scary team to play and will be in the playoffs.

Roddy White needs to be re-signed but he is no Larry Fitzgerald – sorry, he just is not. He also is not on the level of Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson nor Randy Moss. Roddy White is the next level down and the Greg Jennings contract should be the guide. Jennings got a 3 year deal at $27 million – but Jennings is about 2 years younger than Roddy which makes him a little more valuable there as well. I think a 4 year deal at $34 million with $16 million guranteed is fair. Falcons have the leverage since they control Roddy’s rights for the next two years. If Roddy wants a “full market” deal, he needs to have 32 teams vying for his services as an unrestricted free agent – and that is not the case. Even then, Roddy would not get $10 million/year – stand firm Falcons, Roddy will sign for your deal and you hold the cards – not him.

Paul

I am a HUGE Falcons fan and I love the information on your blogs. I am also very excited about the future.

I do not mean to be negative, but am I really the only person who is VERY concerned about our cornerbacks? We really need to upgrade this position (both sides) and I do not read or hear anything regarding our weakness at the cornerback positions. We have a few potential starters, but we really do not have any solid, definite starting caliber corners on the roster. Chris Houston is a liability; watch games from last season if you do not believe me.

I am interested in the informed thoughts of D-Led and anyone else on the forum who has insightful opinions regarding our cornerback situation. Also, why does it seem like nobody else is concerned about our cornerbacks?

D-Led: Do you think the Falcons plan to sign a starting caliber cornerback if another team cuts someone due to salary cap issues?

Top 10 possibly top 5 receiver in the league and in comparison he is way underpaid. In a league where contracts are not guaranteed I think you have to pay him. If he were to hold out (which I don’t see him doing) then that would change the entire offense. I don’t blame him for wanting more money. If he were to get hurt during camp or during preseason then he is screwed. Contracts are not contracts in the NFL as they are in the NBA or MLB. The is a top WR that keeps his mouth shut for the most part and STAYS OUT OF TROUBLE. That is a big deal. I wish he was a little more sure handed but he is entering his prime so that may improve.

RDM

It really annoys the crap out of me when a player holds out because they want a contract extension or a new deal. If you are still under contract, your tail should show up and work hard like any other year. The team doesn’t need distractions with a player who’s already under contract. Your agent can work on a deal before or during the season but as a MAN, you should honor the contract that you signed and let the rest work itself out. Too many pro athletes put themselves first and it’s pathetic. I hope White doesn’t take the low road. The Falcons stuck by him his first 2 years when he absolutely sucked and dropped every other ball that hit his hands. Anyone remember that? Go Birds!

Not as much angst on this blog as we all heard yesterday on the talk shows about Roddy’s contract. First order of business for TD was to get ALL of the draft picks signed prior to camp…well done!

They recently extended MJenkins at around $5M per year, and you have to assume that both the Falcons and the White camp know he will get more – the question is how much? Top receivers are getting ~ $10M per, and I’m sure Roddy’s agent is placing him at that level, although guys like Hines Ward, TO, etc are in the $6M or so range.

The Falcons have likely offered around $6.5+ and Roddy’s agent has demanded $10M+. They WILL compromise and get this done at around $7.8M or so, but it might take a little time for Roddy’s agent to put away the hard-ball. I think it would be a mistake for White to sit out camp and miss out on this critical time. Sitting out won’t improve his number any…he won’t get $10M. Time for some candid talk with TD.

RDM, I hate to see players hold out as well but sometimes I understand it in the NFL only for two main reasons.
1) The only money guaranteed is the signing bonus unlike the other professional sports and I would say that the NFL has one of the greatest risks of injury among the majors.
2) A contract is a agreement between two parties however a NFL team is able to break their side of the contract at any time and the player would in turn get nothing. This is hardly a real contract in my opinion. I like it this way but as a result I understand why certain players hold out even though I want to seem them in camp bustin their tails with the rest of the team.

Some say well the player shouldn’t have signed the contract to begin with and I understand this opinion. I would say the same thing for the team that signs a first round bust and cuts him after two years on a four year deal. Plus, players have to at some point sign a deal if they want to prove themselves in the league. After they do they should be paid reasonable for their services.

I hope White signs and is in camp and I am hopeful he will be. Since Mr. Blank check took over I can’t remember one hold out. Go Falcons.

I agree that Roddy White solidified his position as a go to reciever last year but in the NFL it’s what “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY”! No one can predict what his contribution will be this year, with the addition of a quality T.E. But give him his due. If the Falcons believe the guy is worth what he’s asking, pay him. A happy wideout goes over the middle. A happy wideout make the additional leap or sacrafice for the ball. I believe that Roddy can be an all world reciever. He’s proven that (except for the drop TD pass against Denver). Get it done, management. Give him his pillow. At least he will be able to make that soft landing.

White definently deserves a raise and a contract extension. But just how much are he and his agent asking for? No way he should get close to larry fitzgerald money and if that is his demand then get ready for a long holdout because the falcons won’t give in to those demands. I’m thinking maybe something in the 5yr 35 million range with 15 million guaranteed. Even though he’s coming off a pro bowl season the falcons can’t give him a crazy contract based off one season. See chad johnson. The bengals gave him a huge deal and he hasn’t done squat in two years. I just don’t trust WR’s because they seem to lead the NFL in becoming malcontents and prima donnas. Not at all saying that will be the case with white but WR in the NFL show a recent trend of causing discontent. I think TD should cut off all negotiations and tell Roddy’s agent to inform his client to come to camp when he gets tired of spending 17 grand a day.

Roddy do like Jay Cutler and demand a trade :)

Matty Ice would be even a bigger loser if it wasn’t for Roddy and Turner!

Yall fools think I forgot about that Monday night game in 2007 when I showed you how brothas stick together? I never wanted to be on this loser team – I was just looking for a reason to ask for a trade!

See ya suckers!

TOUGH SCHEDULE FOR THE FALCONS??? Doesn’t the Aints, kitty cats, *ucaneers play the pats, dolphins, jets and bills too? Look at the other 3 teams in Falcons division…9-7 might win it.

I cannot understand the logic of pro sports, agents, & contracts. I own my own business and if an employee wants a raise I am more than happy to discuss it with him. However I will also expect him to do his job while the discussion takes place. If not…he can find the door.

BigEasy go to the Times Picayune website and go talk about your crappy team there. Talk about Regina Bust or how you guys have put so much into your defense and they still suck.

Hey GT GRAD, I agree about the cornerback position being one of concern. However, if you remember Grimes did hold down the position for the first 6 games last year with a little help over the top. I’m hoping that C.Jackson may step up or that C. Owens comes on later in the year. I do think that with the additional pressure I’m sure we’re going to put on the passer we can form a decent player at that position. That’s my hopes anyway. I think the coaching staff will spend plenty of time addressing that situation and that makes me sleep better.

As for Roddy White, I’m disappointed he has chosen to not show up for the beginning of camp. I understand the business side of it but also, as mentioned in previous post, the team stuck with him with his drops and even as lately as the drop against Ariz. in the playoffs that could have easily been a touchdown and game changing play. I just hope his hold out doesn’t make those drops come more often.

Go Falcons!!!!!

If I’m TD, I’m thinking, “You know, Harry Douglas catches the ball pretty good. So does Michael Jenkins. Brian Finneran? He’s old school, there’s no quit in him. So, Roddy, just how badly do you think we need you? Please don’t think badly enough that you’re gonna hold out and I’m gonna rush and say ‘I’m sorry.’ Dude, I came from the Patriots organization. We’re about ‘team.’ Oh, you’re holding out? Tsk tsk, dude.”

I hope Roddy doesn’t poop in his mess kit.

The great Matty Ice doesn’t need Roddy because he is the man. Lets see what you can do Matty Ice without your security blanket.

Remember in 2007 (before Matty Ice) Roddy had similar production, so it looks like Roddy covered up that weak armed over hyped choking qb.

A Fitzgerald-sized investment in Roddy White takes away from investing in the OL and D – which is where the yearly contenders spend their money, once they have their franchise QB, which is exactly where the falcons are now. We need to let White hold out and stick to our price.

The rest of the team knows what it takes to win. This won’t disrupt chemistry. Trust the new regime to know where to put their cash and be patient……….it will work.

Roddy White, Mike Turner and John Abraham and 2 of them are unhappy about their contracts. Take some of that guaranteed money from the playoff choke and everybody can get paid.

What happend to the time when you honored a signed contract, I hope that the Falcons stand strong and remind him of this and I hope that he is proud to be the first bad apple on this team. I hope that maybe, just maybe this might spark some of the team leaders to remind him of loyalty, the Falcons did not ask him to take a pay cut while he was learning and dropping passes. GO FALCONS!!!!!!!

Big Easy…think your saints will fair better? Maybe Reggie can finally live up to the hype. I seriously doubt it. Not hearing too much now about how the Texans screwed that draft up by not takin Bush. I’ve said from day one he wouldn’t do crap in the NFL.
