Falcons predicted to finish 7-9 by “Outsiders”

Falcons QB Matt Ryan on winning and ESPY for Best Breakthrough Athlete. Show airs at 9 p.m. Sunday.

Falcons QB Matt Ryan won an ESPY for Best Breakthrough Athlete. Show airs at 9 p.m. Sunday.

Not everyone is predicting greatness for the Falcons in 2009.

The folks over at Football Outsiders Almanac 2009, are predicting more doom and gloom. In their eyes, the streak will reach 44 seasons. There will be no playoffs and someone’s pet is probably going to die.

In the publications’ eight page analysis of the Falcons, Rob Weintraub, a local free lancer and TV production worker, points out that over the last 30 years, 17 teams have improved by seven games — including the Falcons and Miami last season — but only the 1998 Jets under Duane Charles Parcells (some folks call him Bill) have improved the next season.

Those other 14 teams, wins decrease by an average for four. That would put the Falcons at 7-9 in 2009.

“Every other team has come back to the pack for various reasons,” Weintraub said. “It’s the NFL, parity rules.”

Part of the Falcons summary reads, “2009: That bar is set much higher, and the team is weighted down by almost certain regression.”

Here’s how they see the Falcons coming back to the pack:

THE DECLINE IN HEALTH: “The more statistical things that we’ve gone through point to injuries. The Falcons were a very healthy team last year. They were fifth-best in terms of our stats: man-games-missed by their starters.

Here's what an ESPY looks like.

Here's what an ESPY looks like.

“We found that there is no correlation from year-to-year. Teams that stay healthy for one year don’t necessarily stay healthy the next year. In fact, teams will go backwards in that category.

“If you just have a couple of injuries to a couple of linemen, that could be overcome. Now, if Matt Ryan goes down in the second weak of the season, then the whole thing falls apart. There is a great deal of fortune involved.”

Falcons fans have been there. Check 1999, injuries to Jamal “Jam” Anderson not Jamaal “Sackmaster” Anderson and to Chris Chandler the year after going 14-2 and reaching the Super Bowl. That team went 5-11.

THE SCHEDULE: The Falcons don’t have the AFC West and the NFC Central to kick around. They have the AFC East and NFC East.

“The schedule is significantly more difficult,” Weintraub said.

THE CURSE OF 370: The Outsiders have come up with this “Curse of 370” notion.

Here’s how that works, only one running back – Eric Dickerson – has managed to stare down the Curse.

“Any running back who carries 370 times or more in a single season, there is a significant dropoff or injury the next season,” Weintraub said. “Eric Dickerson is the only guy who’s beat that.”

Eric Dickerson

Eric Dickerson

Micheal Turner had 394 carries for 1,742 yards in 17 games last season.

“You are talking about a very high probability that he’s going to experience a significant (dropoff) this year,” Weintraub said. “Now, it would behoove the Falcons greatly to ease off on his carries. They have Jerious Norwood, whom we love as a back.

“If they can establish a real combination back there, that could definitely offset some of the projected decline in Turner’s numbers.”

The great Dickerson went for 1,808 yards on 390 carries in 1983. He followed that up with 2,105 yards on 379 carries in 1984.

In 1988, Dickerson had 388 carries for 1,659 yards and in 1989 he had 1,311 yards on 314 carries.

Sadly, he was worn out at age 29. By the time he got to the Falcons in 1993, Dickerson could only muster 91 yards on 26 carries.

THE X- FACTOR: The Outsiders don’t know what to do with the addition of tight end Tony Gonzalez.

Tony and October Gonzalez

Tony and October Gonzalez

“We’ve never really had a projection to account for adding a hall of fame tight end, when your biggest need is tight end,” Weintraub said. “It’s obviously a plus, assuming he stays healthy and stays at the level he’s been at.

“He’s also defied all kinds of logic and projections that we’ve done. Our numbers have said they he was going to fall off for the last three years and he hasn’t. That’s a testimony to what a great all-time great player that he is.”

CAN RYAN WIN SHOOT OUTS?: The Outsiders ranks Ryan’s rookie season as the finest of any quarterback since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

“They may have to beat teams 35-31 every week,” Weintraub said. “That’s not a sustainable way to go to the playoffs. Now, it can be done, but I think they’ll need a better plan of attack.”

THE DEFENSE: In their regression analysis, more than 100 variables were looked at for each team. They had to consider the ensuing upheaval with replacing five starters on the defense.

“These guys could step up and play lights out,” Weintraub said. “Stephen Nicholas could turn out to be a Pro Bowl linebacker, we’ll see. But the trend over the last 15 years with teams putting (five or more) starters who have played so little into their starting defense, doesn’t bode well.”

CAVEAT: They still have to play the games.

“We projected the Falcons not to be good last year,” Weintraub said. “But (Matt Ryan) significantly out performed the trends. Surely, that can happen again. We certainly acknowledge that there are times when players step up and become superstars.”

IN SUMMATION: A lot has to happen for the Falcons to end that 43-year streak of never posting back-to-back winning seasons.

“Overall, they have a lot of trends, anchoring them and weighing them back to the pack this year,” Weintraub said. “Right now the numbers say they are going to take a step back.”

Sarah, a pool with no rules, bad girl bad girl. I wasn’t saying old as being a bad thing, more of like where did the time go. It just seems weird to me that the Dome is already considered outdated.

The best stadium I have been to outside of Atlanta was the old Cowboys Stadium, you could literally feel the history in the air. It was a great experience until I went to Waco because I was the best man in a friends wedding, Waco looks like a city wide project. The things a man will do for a woman, moving from Atlanta to Waco, I’m still trying to figure out what she did to him.

I miss ‘ol AFCS. I also miss the red helmets. They kind of went away the same time AFCS did. Billy “Whiteshoes” Johnson and that miracle “Hail Mary” catch against the 49ers…. Brings back some meomeries.

Pre-season predictions are GARBAGE!
- I can assure you that in 98′, 02′. 04′ and last year ATL wasn’t suppose to do anything. But all of these seasons were play-off years for us.

- I can also assure you that in 99′, 03′, 05′ that we were predicted to compete for th Division and make the play-offs but we had losing seasons those years so go figure..

Let’s play the games and see what happens.

GO FALCONS!!

LOL WR nice save!!! I thought you had dug yourself a deep hole with Sarah B…there.

On the subject of the Dome…I love it. Not having to worry about the weather outside is a major plus. It’s only been around since what…90′ or 91 so how is that considered old?

WR, I’m with you. That is why I love my seats in 209. There, we are nothing but “real” fans, having a blast and loving the game.

Sarah, I’ve stayed at the motel and you are right…great location. Could I have marveled: let me stop. This is a FAMILY site…LOL. I hated the move of the game from December to September but this year, it is back where in belongs. We close out the season there on Jan. 3. See ya by the pool!!

CBrass, it is considered “old” due to the fact that the league loves to use the newer stadiums as draws for the Big Event. The Georgia Dome is a great venue for its nearly 20 years of age. AB, working with the state, has done a great job keeping it up. If you recall, the City of Atlanta was a horrid manager of the old AFCS. I can recall bathrooms being off limits due to horrible maintenance conditions. The grass was more dirt at times than grass; but hey, I still loved the old girl!!

Great stuff guys. Just checking in. I love the debate on JN and the other positions of need. I’ll put in my 2c on JN. I don’t think he will ever be a featured back for any team but he can be a very potent weapon on any team. I can just imagine that a number of OC’s are looking at him and salivating. There are so many things that you can incorporate in your offense for him because he can do a number of things not the least of which is break it to the house. He is a very explosive player and that is his asset. Therein lies the reason why a number of teams could overpay because every time he touches the ball he has the potential to score 6.

WR, excellent points on the DL. The concern is really LB. However, in TD we trust and I think he will ensure we will get ourselves better stocked at that position.

You know what concerns me some? The average tenure of an NFL GM is 4 years. This is year 2 of TD’s reign. Does this mean that after this season, if we are playing the averages, he will be here for only 2 more seasons? Well as long as he delivers us a “Lombardi” or 2, I’m fine. AB better start forward-planning and extend him before it’s too late. After all he has to continue the process.

SW, I’ll give the naysayers a “Nesta” for you. Earlier I gave “Stiff Necked Fools” but I’ll dedicate this one to them: Crazy Baldheads

Them crazy, them crazy We gonna chase those crazy
Baldheads out of town Chase those crazy baldheads Out of town

I and I build a cabin, I and I plant the corn
Didn’t my people before me, slave for this country, now you look me with a scorn
Then you eat up all my corn, we gonna chase those crazy baldheads
Chase them crazy, chase those crazy baldheads out of town

Just a taste!!!

Go Falcons!!!

Nuff respect everytime!!!

Nookah, agree on Norwood and his multiple uses, he kind of reminds me of Eric Metcalf, people forget that Metcalf was a tailback originally in the league with the Browns, he came to Atlanta and the Falcons put him in the slot for the run and shoot offense. Norwood has those same game changing abilities give or take Metcalf was quicker, but Norwood is faster. Norwood can be used in the back field or split out wide and in the slot. Now imagine this, lining Norwood out in the slot on one side and Douglas in the slot on the other side, where do you position your safeties, what are the Falcons about to run at you, Turner can be in the back field as a single back, and you still have White and Jenkins out wide with Gonzo in as a TE, talk about spacing out a defense, and picking your poison.

Ahhhhh the run and shoot. What a scheme. WR, you are really bringing back the memories today. I’ve won a few FFL titles with the R & S. It is a very good fantasy offense to run.

Nookah, don’t sacre a brother like that! Hell, I’m already spoiled with TD as our leader in the front office. I will contribute to a fund NOW to help AB keep him in ATL. Ohhhhh, I don’t even want to go down that road. Talk about a setback! Brother, I need another “Nesta” after that.

CBrass, you are determined to get me in trouble with Sarah, ain’t nobody scared of Sarah, besides I found out a long time ago we agree on most things, I was never one to treat her like a female in the cage, I treated her like a fan and that to me is equality. She liked being the first lady of the cage, but she wanted to be a student of the game and fan more, I guess you could say she’s one of the fellas but thats discriminating, she’s one of the members of the cage, she brings a different view point and we all respect her for it.

Seminole, I believe Houston ran it best. There were alot of naysayers toward the offense, but the offense put up points and never was easily shut down, not even with our birds. I think the problem was that it kept the defense on the field because of the turnover potential and the quick scoring capabilities. But I agree, you could pile up the numbers if you had a good player from the run and shoot. Thats kind of why I don’t understand the craziness with the wildcat, it basically has the characteristics of the old option/wishbone ran by Barry Switzer back in his Oklahoma days, with Holiday as the QB. It presents a number of reads and options for a defense to consider, the same as the run and shoot, people call the Rams of the late 90’s early 2000, the greatest show on turf, but all they really ran was the run and shoot, but they had the perfect RB for it, Marshall Faulk. Given all the weapons the Falcons possess, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see some principles of the run and shoot utilized this year, you never know with mad mike, its an evolving league, but as my Pops use to say, theres nothing new under the sun.

Ryan has leadership. This pure bull who has he lead. Turner was the leader but the media want this guy to be golden when he is not . just watch this year. Ryan has better players around him but let’s make it clear he is not the leader ! They let him have a pass last year yes a free pass. But when they put pressure on him he drop like a rock. He is a pure want TO be QB! He was very lucky last year and so was the falcon!! Buc’s rule- Atlanta is a pure flop no more no less!! But the media loves your QB when he is not all that!!

CBrass, I see potential trouble maker brewing in you(j/k). I didn’t say just about everything, I did say we agree on most things. Seminole likes to stir the pot and you took the bait. But you fail to realize that I feel the same way about Seminole. Its not about agreeing on everything its about having a mutual respect and understanding regarding your fellow mate. I speak my mind regardless of who agrees or disagrees but I have found that more often then not Sarah, Seminole, D3, JJ, Nookah and Big Ray can respect that, even if they disagree. A couple of weeks ago someone in the cage got offended by a topic or conversation piece, and then as it is now, I see the cage as being a place of family and friends. Sometimes in the midst of chatting you see a member that needs a pick me up, thats what we do, in prayer, laughter, or overall advice. Thats what makes it so fun. I talk crap about the fantasy league knowing that I could come in last place, but its funny, it makes people relax, and realize that the hell of today is over, yeah it might be there tomorrow but I can end the day in laughter, I can end the day knowing that people who have never put an eye on me pray for me and my family, or offer the best advice that they can. Its all about the Falcons in the cage, but I have come to realize that alot of the people in the cage believe in the Falcons, and their going to do their best to make sure your around to celebrate when we all are on Peachtree.

As far as Thomas Davis goes, I don’t care if he came from Tennessee, if he improves the birds Im all for it. Pros is the Pros, and college is college, we joke around back in forth about our favorite college team but we all share one common Team, The Atlanta Falcons. Davis was preforming at a pro bowl level, haven’t heard much about him lately, but if he’s still preforming at that level and the Falcons can get him at a reasonable price, then bring him in, if not, we always have the draft and once again if it hasn’t been said enough, in TD I trust, until proven otherwise. H@ll if we didn’t have the safeties in place that we do, you better believe that I wouldn’t mind the birds taken a close look at bringing in Eric Berry.

We want to throw him to the wolves to soon, Patrick Kerney took three years, why, because he was use to playing Lacrosse, football was a second sport, what happened. Nothing against Kerney but Jamaal has more talent, even when Kerney was taking the three years, he wasn’t as good against the run as Jamaal is now, have faith my brother, Jamaal will break through, besides, you are the one who said have faith in BVG, so why not give Jamaal a chance. Remember the Freak, Javon Kearse, he burned out rather quickly, now look at Jamaal, when is the last time you saw a man of his size, strength, and speed combination, and he’s new to the game, a beast is about to break through, and I don’t believe you want to make that call to trade him.

Jason, Petersen is a band-aid solution for a year or two. Davis is in his prime and his signing could secure the WLB position with Pro Bowl talent for the next five years.

As far as Anderson versus Johnson, I think I will stay with Anderson. Say what may about the dude and his learning curve, he still trys hard and I’m hopeful that the Sugar Bear will bring him along.

Nookah – What’s up my friend? Love the Baldheads lyrics and comparison. Hate will always envelope our country and world, but we’ve done a masterful job of eliminating from the ‘Cage. As far as TD goes, don’t think for a second that Blank won’t throw the moon and stars at TD to stay as long as he wants. What’s he’s done in two off-season is nothing but amazing.

WR(2) – Nice spacing analysis there. I sure will try to enjoy every second I can of Norwood this year, because he’s as good as gone. Hate that’s the way its gonna be, but I can’t imagine him staying unless he decides to take less money to stay in the South. Doubt it.

jason – PROCESS and VERSATILITY. Love it. Only one more to add this year or in a couple, CHAMPIONSHIP! To sign up for the Fantasy Football League, go to the email I sent you, and follow the link. From there it should be just follow directions. I’ll resend the email to you.

Seminole – Man, you just had to ask that question didn’t you? Well, in theory that the Panthers would let him get away, then I would say yes, but he will command top dollar and that doesn’t appear to be TD’s M.O. to this point. Peterson should give us at least one more year after this and I think TD would much rather draft an OLB, than pay top dollar for one. We already have money that will take up to lock Dahl and Clabo to long term deals. It’s not unthinkable, though, considering MV’s salary comes off the books and in all likelihood Norwoods as well. Personally, I don’t see the Panthers letting him get away.

Even though I teach math, it looks like a seventh grade language arts class might be in order.

WR(3) – Eric Berry will be long, long, long gone by the time we pick (here’s hoping we well to the back of the draft), but I see him going top 5 easily. Guys a stud and just had to go to the House CEO’s alma mater to play.

jason(2) – Agree with you on Thomas Davis. The guy will command top dollar, as he should, but going after high price free agents is not TD’s M.O. Turner was the exception, because it was a high need to transform the bruised and battered team. Tashard Choice is the man you’re thinking of I believe.

WR, the secret to tasty burgers is simple. Before they are patted out Leah & Perrins (brand specific) some pepper and Adobo. They are great.

Seminole Warrior, The thing with Davis is the cost. I like you would love for him to take a homestate discount, but that ain’t likely. I feel JAnderson will break out this year. I was just looking for a way to add another DAWG. Who are we looking at as far as prospects next year at LB (weakside)?

D3, forgive my spelling and/or verb usage. That is what happens when you are writing a regional forecast discussion and blogging Falcons issues at the same time. I promise to get an “A” next time. LOL.

Davis will cost a nice penny for sure but perhaps AB can use that smooth charm to get him to take the hometown discount. Jsut a thought.

Seminole – you know I wasn’t talking about you brother! I was discussing one of the Hate-Fisher’s attempt at scorched earth policy. Bro, I would never pull that on you or any of my ‘Cage brethren.

D3, you have been away too long, The “Monster” has to get caught up.

Thanks for Tashard Choice, you know how it is at work. He gave my DAWGS hell for a couple of years. I’ll take a Jacket or 2 on ATL’s roster. That’s about all they provide at most anyway (WR). Had to, couldn’t resist. We need to find a replacement for Brooking (GT), maybe Walker will be that Jacket.

D3, just pulling your leg my brother. Teaching is like meteorology. We pour our hearts into what we do and most of it goes unappreciated. We salute you and your fellow educators in these difficult times.
