BLOGCATIONVILLE — Headed for that last blog-cation before the season starts. Needed to get a few things for you all to nimble on.
Not everyone is predicting greatness for the Falcons in 2009.
The folks over at Football Outsiders Almanac 2009, are predicting more doom and gloom. In their eyes, the streak will reach 44 seasons. There will be no playoffs and someone’s pet is probably going to die.
In the publications’ eight page analysis of the Falcons, Rob Weintraub, a local free lancer and TV production worker, points out that over the last 30 years, 17 teams have improved by seven games — including the Falcons and Miami last season — but only the 1998 Jets under Duane Charles Parcells (some folks call him Bill) have improved the next season.
Those other 14 teams, wins decrease by an average for four. That would put the Falcons at 7-9 in 2009.
“Every other team has come back to the pack for various reasons,” Weintraub said. “It’s the NFL, parity rules.”
Part of the Falcons summary reads, “2009: That bar is set much higher, and the team is weighted down by almost certain regression.”
Here’s how they see the Falcons coming back to the pack:
THE DECLINE IN HEALTH: “The more statistical things that we’ve gone through point to injuries. The Falcons were a very healthy team last year. They were fifth-best in terms of our stats: man-games-missed by their starters.
“We found that there is no correlation from year-to-year. Teams that stay healthy for one year don’t necessarily stay healthy the next year. In fact, teams will go backwards in that category.
“If you just have a couple of injuries to a couple of linemen, that could be overcome. Now, if Matt Ryan goes down in the second weak of the season, then the whole thing falls apart. There is a great deal of fortune involved.”
Falcons fans have been there. Check 1999, injuries to Jamal “Jam” Anderson not Jamaal “Sackmaster” Anderson and to Chris Chandler the year after going 14-2 and reaching the Super Bowl. That team went 5-11.
THE SCHEDULE: The Falcons don’t have the AFC West and the NFC Central to kick around. They have the AFC East and NFC East.
“The schedule is significantly more difficult,” Weintraub said.
THE CURSE OF 370: The Outsiders have come up with this “Curse of 370” notion.
Here’s how that works, only one running back – Eric Dickerson – has managed to stare down the Curse.
“Any running back who carries 370 times or more in a single season, there is a significant dropoff or injury the next season,” Weintraub said. “Eric Dickerson is the only guy who’s beat that.”
Micheal Turner had 394 carries for 1,742 yards in 17 games last season.
“You are talking about a very high probability that he’s going to experience a significant (dropoff) this year,” Weintraub said. “Now, it would behoove the Falcons greatly to ease off on his carries. They have Jerious Norwood, whom we love as a back.
“If they can establish a real combination back there, that could definitely offset some of the projected decline in Turner’s numbers.”
The great Dickerson went for 1,808 yards on 390 carries in 1983. He followed that up with 2,105 yards on 379 carries in 1984.
In 1988, Dickerson had 388 carries for 1,659 yards and in 1989 he had 1,311 yards on 314 carries.
Sadly, he was worn out at age 29. By the time he got to the Falcons in 1993, Dickerson could only muster 91 yards on 26 carries.
THE X- FACTOR: The Outsiders don’t know what to do with the addition of tight end Tony Gonzalez.
“We’ve never really had a projection to account for adding a hall of fame tight end, when your biggest need is tight end,” Weintraub said. “It’s obviously a plus, assuming he stays healthy and stays at the level he’s been at.
“He’s also defied all kinds of logic and projections that we’ve done. Our numbers have said they he was going to fall off for the last three years and he hasn’t. That’s a testimony to what a great all-time great player that he is.”
CAN RYAN WIN SHOOT OUTS?: The Outsiders ranks Ryan’s rookie season as the finest of any quarterback since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
“They may have to beat teams 35-31 every week,” Weintraub said. “That’s not a sustainable way to go to the playoffs. Now, it can be done, but I think they’ll need a better plan of attack.”
THE DEFENSE: In their regression analysis, more than 100 variables were looked at for each team. They had to consider the ensuing upheaval with replacing five starters on the defense.
“These guys could step up and play lights out,” Weintraub said. “Stephen Nicholas could turn out to be a Pro Bowl linebacker, we’ll see. But the trend over the last 15 years with teams putting (five or more) starters who have played so little into their starting defense, doesn’t bode well.”
CAVEAT: They still have to play the games.
“We projected the Falcons not to be good last year,” Weintraub said. “But (Matt Ryan) significantly out performed the trends. Surely, that can happen again. We certainly acknowledge that there are times when players step up and become superstars.”
IN SUMMATION: A lot has to happen for the Falcons to end that 43-year streak of never posting back-to-back winning seasons.
“Overall, they have a lot of trends, anchoring them and weighing them back to the pack this year,” Weintraub said. “Right now the numbers say they are going to take a step back.”

Thomas Johnson, Defensive tackle, 6-2, 305: His name keeps popping up. Has been with three teams since coming out of Middle Tennessee in 2005. He hasn’t been able to stick with Dallas, Houston or the New York Jets. He made three starts with Houston in 2006.

row3,
No sir, it was Dave Hampton. Chrmin’ Harmon had Jimmy Johnson Hair before J.J. and worked as a Sports Caster for a local TV station. He played under N. Van Brocklyn.
We could also add G Kunz, R Thielman, G Brezina, J Merrow, and F Reed.

Unca’ Bob,
Thanks for digging up the bye opponents (chi., dal., was., nyg).
All playing here except dal., count wash as a W.
I think chi and giants both have excellent coaches who will use the extra week to attack our D. Both games will be tough, but if we can split those 2, it comes down to dal at dal. Not sure about that game, they should be better just not having the TO circus around.

Now lets say for some reason the birds split games with everyone in the division, that puts them at 3-3. The remaining schedule at home is Mia, Was, Chi, Phi and Buf. On the road its NE, SF, Dal, NYG, and NYJ. Teams that even a professional analyst can see beating Atlanta at home, Phi, Chi, maybe even Mia. Teams that even an analyst can see beating Atlanta on the road, NE, Dal, NYG, and maybe the jets. So basically if they handle the teams they are suppose to beat it puts them at 6-3. Now applying the laws of spades to the remaining schedule the chances of the Falcons losing are 4 and 3 possibles. With the possibles, unless something goes dramatically wrong you should win more than your fair share, so thats 2-1. Which brings the record to 8-4. The last 4 are suppose to be guaranteed usually you have the two jokers and two aces. You can’t beat the two jokers so that brings the record to 8-6. The two spaces on the other hand can be cut, because you never know who is cutting what suit. Which brings the record to 10-6.
Now as I proposed earlier the Falcons split the series with everyone in the division, but with Tampa in a rebuilding year both offensively and defensively can we not see the birds beating them in both games. Which would change the record to 11-5. Yes applying the laws of spades to a football season is somewhat trivial, but wait, each season there are teams that you should beat if your good, and the Falcons are good, the good teams beat the teams that they are supposed to. With the rest of the schedule, you have to account for injuries, experience, how the ball drops (breaks), and momentum. Just like spades, if you have a really good hand you can play it to perfection, at the same time, playing a card to early or to late can be rather costly. Even with a bad hand you can steal a book or two, it just depends on how you play and how the cards fall, which is the same as the unknowns of playing an NFL game.
I believe it was Jason yesterday that said there is a youth movement in the NFL as far as coaches are concerned, thats good, youth brings energy, but all the energy in the world can’t help you against experience and someone who knows what their doing. What makes evil Bill Belichick so great, its his need and thirst to study the game, new and old. Once you have done that, know one rarely throws anything at you that you haven’t seen before. What caught Bill by surprise, the wildcat, why, because it was an offense rarely seen in the pros, but you can turn on your T.V. any saturday and see it ran in college. The birds have the talent first and foremost, but most importantly the birds have a coaching staff that has seen it all, if you ask me, I kind of like their chances.

SEMINOLE WARRIOR-Jessie Tuggle hands down. BCurry was a 3-4 inside LB, and I’m not certain he was even the best LB on his team.
ROW3-It was definitely DHampton.
WR-I’m not certain, but I believe we also lost DSanders to Dallas around that same time. Dallas won a Superbowl after acquiring both players. When the Clampett’s(Smith’s) owned the Falcons, their stupidity and greed allowed some very talented players to get away. We lost TCasillas, DSanders, Brian Jordan, GRiggs, BFarve, BFralic and CHumphrey. But when DReeves was both GM and HC, he went crazy. He disbanded our Superbowl roster by trading or refusing to resign WR’s, TMathis, TMartin, DE’s CSmith, LArchambeau, FS Robinson, SS White, DB’s JBolden, RBradford, MBooker, DBush, LB’s HCrockett, JTuggle, DT’s THall, SDronett, C RTobeck, OG ESalaam, TE OJ Santiago and WR/KR TDwight.
Our current owner, GM and HC are doing just the opposite by accumulating talent. One other thing. Someone mentioned how they were concerned about our youth and inexperience. Well, considering the lack of speed, quickness, mobility, stamina, and the overall liabilities of the veteran players they’ll be replacing, we should be excited about the young additions instead of worrying about them.

Check this out guys. This is encouraging coming from Lofton:
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — No position group on defense was affected more by offseason departures than linebacker.
The Falcons starting outside linebackers from 2008 — Keith Brooking and Michael Boley — are gone, leaving key spots to fill with a mix of young talent and free agent additions. In mini camp and organized team activities the team plugged veteran Mike Peterson into one position; third-year player Stephen Nicholas inherited the other spot.
That makes second-year linebacker Curtis Lofton the lone mark of consistency entering training camp.
But, according to the middle linebacker, fans need not worry how the team is bonding and getting better at one of the game’s key positions.
“The offense gets a lot of publicity and notoriety and they deserve that but don’t overlook this defense,” Lofton said during the offseason. “We have a lot of young guys that started for us last year and really didn’t know what they were doing. This year we’re into the system and we know what we’re doing. I think we’re going to shock some people on defense with how good we are.”
Go Falcons!!!
Nuff respect everytime!!!

Any FF guru’s out there?
So you play 9 each week, but we draft 14, so we have 14 rounds?
(2 qb, 4rb, 4 wr, 2 te, 1 k, 1 Defense)
Wouldn’t we need to draft at least 2k and 2d for the bye week?
so would it be: (2 qb, 3 rb, 3 wr, 2 te, 2k, 2d)?

JJ – what’s up my brother? I was waiting for everyone to sign up and I was going to send around an email about the starters, points, rules, etc.
But here’s a quick hit on it : each week you will start 1 qb, 2 rb, 2 wr, 1 flex(rb or wr), 1 te, 1 dl, 1 lb, 1 db, & 1 k.
So you will start 11 total, with 5 reserves.
As far as drafting goes there is no limit to the number of positions you can draft.
More info coming soon. Was waiting for stirg to play but haven’t heard from him.

Yep, I saw that where William Moore signed today.
It`s a nice feeling, just knowing, TD will have all the rookies signed before camp.
That certainly was not a feeling, I often enjoyed in the past.
WR, nice breakdown.
Roughly, 10/6 seems to be a general consensus around here and I concur.
”Our current owner, GM and HC are doing just the opposite by accumulating talent. One other thing. Someone mentioned how they were concerned about our youth and inexperience. JJ, I’ll let that one slide for the time being, can’t use up all my material before the season starts. I gotta admit between when you say your working on draft central, I start to figure this may be a little more challenging then I thought. D3, is on my radar but I have him in week two, and Seminole is my last game of the year, they seemed to be my biggest threats, then you jumped in, and apparently Unca’Bob is paying alot of attention so this should be a good fantasy season.
BT, thanks for thumbs up, didn’t know if most people would get the spades comparison, but I figured it worked really well with the different varibles of a football season. I agree with you also on the idea of the Falcons youth movement. I pointed it out last week but I looked at the Arizona playoff game last year and the flea flicker for a touchdown could have been overcome with a little more speed. Yes Lawyer bit on the play, alot of vets would, but in his younger days he could have overcome that brief moment of indecision. Now with our youth and speed they will be able to overcome a brief lapse in judgement, thats why speed kills, speed allows you to make a mistake but overcome that mistake.

WR, Did I hear someone mention Spades? Deal ‘em up. That was a perfect anyalsis. There are variables that you can’t count for. Injuries, missed calls etc. You have to control what you can. You have to win the ones you should so you can battle and split the ones that you are even with. Do that and then surprise a N.E. or a Giant, and you just won the best record in the conference and have Home Field and a Bye. All that said, I am sitting 10-6 with a possible 2 games that could go either way. So, 9-7 or 11-5. That’s worse/best case scenario.
Ken, Thanks for Hunphrey. I remember him vaguely. I remember Curry a little more. He was my fave on D and Andrews on O. U was born in 1973, so those early years kind of disapear on me every once in a while. I am embarrassed that I forgot Fralic and Butler when I first dropped the team.

Jason thunk is kind of like poker except you each player is dealt five cards, if you have the lowest hand you can drop your cards and a player has to catch you, if your caught you pay double the amount of your bet. Now if you nor anyone else drops their hand you play it out by trying to get three of a kind, after you get the three of a kind your still left with two cards which once again you can drop and once again if someone catches you, you pay double. When I say catch you I mean their hand is lower than yours. Lets say you have an ace 1pt, king 10pts,2 of whatever 2pts, 3 of whatever 3pts and a 4 of what ever 4 pts than your total points for your hand is 20 if you believe that hand is lower than anyone elses you drop it. Same goes if you have two cards left and you feel you are lower than anyone else. Now there is also a double thunk out, thats when you get the three of a kind, you lay them down, now you have two cards left, lets say you have two kings worth ten pts apiece, thats fairly high so you hold on to the cards because you fear you might get caught, while holding onto the cards you get another king which means you have two pairs of three of a kind, so you double thunk out, which means everyone in the game has to pay you double.
