Falcons predicted to finish 7-9 by “Outsiders”

BLOGCATIONVILLE — Headed for that last blog-cation before the season starts. Needed to get a few things for you all to nimble on.

Falcons QB Matt Ryan on winning and ESPY for Best Breakthrough Athlete. Show airs at 9 p.m. Sunday.

Falcons QB Matt Ryan won an ESPY for Best Breakthrough Athlete. Show airs at 9 p.m. Sunday.

Not everyone is predicting greatness for the Falcons in 2009.

The folks over at Football Outsiders Almanac 2009, are predicting more doom and gloom. In their eyes, the streak will reach 44 seasons. There will be no playoffs and someone’s pet is probably going to die.

In the publications’ eight page analysis of the Falcons, Rob Weintraub, a local free lancer and TV production worker, points out that over the last 30 years, 17 teams have improved by seven games — including the Falcons and Miami last season — but only the 1998 Jets under Duane Charles Parcells (some folks call him Bill) have improved the next season.

Those other 14 teams, wins decrease by an average for four. That would put the Falcons at 7-9 in 2009.

“Every other team has come back to the pack for various reasons,” Weintraub said. “It’s the NFL, parity rules.”

Part of the Falcons summary reads, “2009: That bar is set much higher, and the team is weighted down by almost certain regression.”

Here’s how they see the Falcons coming back to the pack:

THE DECLINE IN HEALTH: “The more statistical things that we’ve gone through point to injuries. The Falcons were a very healthy team last year. They were fifth-best in terms of our stats: man-games-missed by their starters.

Here's what an ESPY looks like.

Here's what an ESPY looks like.

“We found that there is no correlation from year-to-year. Teams that stay healthy for one year don’t necessarily stay healthy the next year. In fact, teams will go backwards in that category.

“If you just have a couple of injuries to a couple of linemen, that could be overcome. Now, if Matt Ryan goes down in the second weak of the season, then the whole thing falls apart. There is a great deal of fortune involved.”

Falcons fans have been there. Check 1999, injuries to Jamal “Jam” Anderson not Jamaal “Sackmaster” Anderson and to Chris Chandler the year after going 14-2 and reaching the Super Bowl. That team went 5-11.

THE SCHEDULE: The Falcons don’t have the AFC West and the NFC Central to kick around. They have the AFC East and NFC East.

“The schedule is significantly more difficult,” Weintraub said.

THE CURSE OF 370: The Outsiders have come up with this “Curse of 370” notion.

Here’s how that works, only one running back – Eric Dickerson – has managed to stare down the Curse.

“Any running back who carries 370 times or more in a single season, there is a significant dropoff or injury the next season,” Weintraub said. “Eric Dickerson is the only guy who’s beat that.”

Eric Dickerson

Eric Dickerson

Micheal Turner had 394 carries for 1,742 yards in 17 games last season.

“You are talking about a very high probability that he’s going to experience a significant (dropoff) this year,” Weintraub said. “Now, it would behoove the Falcons greatly to ease off on his carries. They have Jerious Norwood, whom we love as a back.

“If they can establish a real combination back there, that could definitely offset some of the projected decline in Turner’s numbers.”

The great Dickerson went for 1,808 yards on 390 carries in 1983. He followed that up with 2,105 yards on 379 carries in 1984.

In 1988, Dickerson had 388 carries for 1,659 yards and in 1989 he had 1,311 yards on 314 carries.

Sadly, he was worn out at age 29. By the time he got to the Falcons in 1993, Dickerson could only muster 91 yards on 26 carries.

THE X- FACTOR: The Outsiders don’t know what to do with the addition of tight end Tony Gonzalez.

Tony and October Gonzalez

Tony and October Gonzalez

“We’ve never really had a projection to account for adding a hall of fame tight end, when your biggest need is tight end,” Weintraub said. “It’s obviously a plus, assuming he stays healthy and stays at the level he’s been at.

“He’s also defied all kinds of logic and projections that we’ve done. Our numbers have said they he was going to fall off for the last three years and he hasn’t. That’s a testimony to what a great all-time great player that he is.”

CAN RYAN WIN SHOOT OUTS?: The Outsiders ranks Ryan’s rookie season as the finest of any quarterback since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

“They may have to beat teams 35-31 every week,” Weintraub said. “That’s not a sustainable way to go to the playoffs. Now, it can be done, but I think they’ll need a better plan of attack.”

THE DEFENSE: In their regression analysis, more than 100 variables were looked at for each team. They had to consider the ensuing upheaval with replacing five starters on the defense.

“These guys could step up and play lights out,” Weintraub said. “Stephen Nicholas could turn out to be a Pro Bowl linebacker, we’ll see. But the trend over the last 15 years with teams putting (five or more) starters who have played so little into their starting defense, doesn’t bode well.”

CAVEAT: They still have to play the games.

“We projected the Falcons not to be good last year,” Weintraub said. “But (Matt Ryan) significantly out performed the trends. Surely, that can happen again. We certainly acknowledge that there are times when players step up and become superstars.”

IN SUMMATION: A lot has to happen for the Falcons to end that 43-year streak of never posting back-to-back winning seasons.

“Overall, they have a lot of trends, anchoring them and weighing them back to the pack this year,” Weintraub said. “Right now the numbers say they are going to take a step back.”

Tell us how ya feel Atlanta, show us some team spirit, some pride, do you love your birds, well let us know how you really feel, hit us up at 1-888-LUV-ATLF, hit us now, hit us often, just hit us. (all calls are 5 dollars for the first minute, and 99 cent for each additional minute, all proceeds will go to the Eugene Robinson sexual addiction fund, because a superbowl is a terrible thing to waste)

NFL Retro…holding it down here in the Cage while we await the family’s safe arrival at their respective destinations. SW, WR, and JJ who is still walking the dog. LOL.

Hope that the Cage family all had a good day. If you were not here early today, CBrass brought the house down with the lead on a very good discussion on the Bird’s offense. She was on it today; She is my choice in early voting for Cage Rookie of the Year.

The boss stopped by a little while ago, spreading love and opening up on the DAWG pair of Moreno and Stafford. I tell ya. Keep them away from D3 okay. They may need Secret Service protection…LOL.

WR, I see you, like JJ and I, favor Rankin Smith’s ROH induction. What about the stadium? New Dome or outdoors?

NFL Retro with you till the top of the hour…

NFL Retro…

SW and WR holding it down. Breaking news. C Jeremy Newberry is retiring. The reports surfaced earlier today and the boss stopped into the studios a few moments back to confirm. Not a major issue at the center position. We, the Falcon Nation, wish Jeremy the best in his retirement.

About ten minutes or so left for NFL Retro. The Cage family should be in shortly; SW, WR, JJ, and the puppy holding it down from the Cage studios.

Tell Cage…what was that special Falcons moment? For me, it was seeing my hometown man William Andrews make to the big time in his home state.

The commute is winding down and I am sure the fire will heat up here late when the boss, Sarah, Jason, JJ, the haters, and others settle in after the long day.

Yeah, haven’t quite figured that one out yet, why was he paying for it in the first place, this is a pro football player, you just walk in the room and take somebody’s woman, he should have been getting advice for Pacman Jones. Had to be the Jinx, Falcons win a superbowl never, let me throw on a thong and see if I can put an end to all of this madness, well apparently it worked, who would have thunk it.

Feel free to weigh in callers, did it make you mad or sad, is he a real player, does a real player get caught, where the players at out there. What was going on with his wife who was awaiting his arrival in the hotel room, was she holding out, did they have an argument and little eugene didn’t get taken care of, or is he an undercover bad boy, tell us what you think Atlanta, we only have a litte time left, ladies we want your opinions to, what was up with supposed football player or otherwise.

Well, time to close out this first edition of NFL Retro.

Thanks to my partners JJ and WR. Special stuido guest: JJ’s puppy. Props to the boss, D3, for allowing us air time.

We had fun reflecting on old school like Newhouse, Curry, Andrews, Stabler, and Bartkowski. We paid respect to the founding father, Rankin Smith.

Looking ahead with dreams of our Super Bowl Parade and the new Bird house, 72,000+ seats of pure electricity in the ATL.

Keep it real, keep it cool, and remember, we are the FALCON NATION. For JJ, WR, the Boss, and the puppy, this is your Warrior. See ya soon!!

Very memorable day in the cage, CBrass lit the fire, and so many added a log or two. NFL retro was introduced and I’m sure it will return, the boss got a little ticked off today for the first time, but all was well once again in the cage. Who’s going to open up a topic to take us through the night, the bird cage is alive and well, and its starting to fire on all cylinders.

Unca’Bob, fire away when ready with that recipe, I think you started to and Sarah added a few things, so between the two of you I figure I should have a really nice recipe for this up coming season.

Kick ass burgers everytime:

1- worstershire (in qt. baggie, 30 min.)

2- mckormicks steak seasoning – both sides

the key my friend, remove from heat (grill/pan) 3-4 min before done, put on clean plate, wrap, and they will finish cooking on their own and by letting them sit for 5-10 min,,,you keep it moist! IMHO

An very interesting question. First, give props to the owner, AB, for finally getting a football man in place. Nothing against Rich McKay, but TD is something special. Next, a blue collar man who wants to do nothing but bring it each time we line up, Mike Smith.

The offense is special. First, we have an offensive wizard calling the shots in Mad Mike. Second, we are back to what the Falcons do best when they have been successful, RUNNING THE ROCK!! Third, we have a leader in the huddle. Though young, this man has impressed veterans, both on the field around the league, and in the coaching ranks with his focus, drive, and will over such a short time. Add in a veteran staff that is focused on mentoring these young men personnally AND professionally. I think that we may not be the most explosive..but we are going to be pretty darn good in our own right.

SW: on that line, who has more offensive weapons? Thats what CC was talking about. Now that we have T.G., he mentioned ryan, white, jenkins and i think harry. Caught the tail end of it because rocky was so enamored with sarah b, but he said something about we have 5 “stars” on Offense. I’ll check the web, see if i cant find the show.

But who has the offensive powerhouse that can match-up? NE – name 5 then, I cant?

JJ, I can only come up with one team that has that type of firepower potential. Unfortunately, they share the same division as we do.

The New Orleans Saints.

Drew Brees…an assassin. Biggest mistake that Dan Reeves made in his famous ‘01 trade was underestimating DB.

Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush: potentially lethal running attack.

Marques Colston, Lance Moore, Robert Meachem, and Devery Henderson. Colston is a star in the making; Moore can play too.

Jeremy Shockey: If he would shut the hell up and listen to Coach Payton, he could cruise to greatness in this offense. Big Dummy!!

Their offensive line: Brees has been sacked 29 times in TWO years. NUFF said.

That is profilic in my humble opinion. But we are closing the gap!!

Unca B, I’m assuming that you are referring to the Rankin Smith ROH question that was brought up on the inagural edition of NFL Retro.

Hopefully I cleared things up.

JJ, they are lethal. And I would be a bigger fool than Gene Robinson to compare TG to Shockey. That is like the choice between Filet Mignon and a vienna sausage.

JJ, I must agree with Seminole on the player, an old woman once told me that “everything that looks good is not good for you, tell the player to be careful what he uses it on when he pulls it out the holster, it could fire back.

Well thats a topic for NFL Retro, got to get back to the cage.

I believe that Fred Taylor will add alot to NE’s attack. With Joe cool, I mean Tom back that offense will be dangerous also. They also picked up Galloway who’s getting old but has quite a bit left in the tank, add to that Wes Walker, and Randy Moss and NE is still up there as far as being dangerous. N.O. is a given and SW covered them already, so next on the list probably would be Arizona with the addition of the Beanie Man. Fitz and Boldin get most of the credit, but Steve Breston was extremely good last year, combine that with Warner having arena league flashbacks and you have yet another potent attack. The thing about the Falcons that put them above the teams in mentioned is the fact that Atlanta can switch into grind it out ball, none of the aforementioned teams have that capability. So basically Atlanta is right up there with the most explosive offenses, but can grind it out with the best running teams in the league, now thats potency.

The running attack is the difference. But be careful of Pierre Thomas and the newly acquired Chris Wells out west. Now those teams have an enhanced capacity to run…both not with the lethal nature of the Birds.

The passing attacks are a little more mature that ours right now. But we are not behind. I think, under the guidance of Mad Mike and the SERIOUSLY underrated QB guru, Bill Musgrave, MR can become an assasin just like Brees, Brady, and Warner.

Result…I call it a push.., NE, ATL, NO, and AZ.
