Falcons predicted to finish 7-9 by “Outsiders”

Falcons QB Matt Ryan on winning and ESPY for Best Breakthrough Athlete. Show airs at 9 p.m. Sunday.

Falcons QB Matt Ryan won an ESPY for Best Breakthrough Athlete. Show airs at 9 p.m. Sunday.

Not everyone is predicting greatness for the Falcons in 2009.

The folks over at Football Outsiders Almanac 2009, are predicting more doom and gloom. In their eyes, the streak will reach 44 seasons. There will be no playoffs and someone’s pet is probably going to die.

In the publications’ eight page analysis of the Falcons, Rob Weintraub, a local free lancer and TV production worker, points out that over the last 30 years, 17 teams have improved by seven games — including the Falcons and Miami last season — but only the 1998 Jets under Duane Charles Parcells (some folks call him Bill) have improved the next season.

Those other 14 teams, wins decrease by an average for four. That would put the Falcons at 7-9 in 2009.

“Every other team has come back to the pack for various reasons,” Weintraub said. “It’s the NFL, parity rules.”

Part of the Falcons summary reads, “2009: That bar is set much higher, and the team is weighted down by almost certain regression.”

Here’s how they see the Falcons coming back to the pack:

THE DECLINE IN HEALTH: “The more statistical things that we’ve gone through point to injuries. The Falcons were a very healthy team last year. They were fifth-best in terms of our stats: man-games-missed by their starters.

Here's what an ESPY looks like.

Here's what an ESPY looks like.

“We found that there is no correlation from year-to-year. Teams that stay healthy for one year don’t necessarily stay healthy the next year. In fact, teams will go backwards in that category.

“If you just have a couple of injuries to a couple of linemen, that could be overcome. Now, if Matt Ryan goes down in the second weak of the season, then the whole thing falls apart. There is a great deal of fortune involved.”

Falcons fans have been there. Check 1999, injuries to Jamal “Jam” Anderson not Jamaal “Sackmaster” Anderson and to Chris Chandler the year after going 14-2 and reaching the Super Bowl. That team went 5-11.

THE SCHEDULE: The Falcons don’t have the AFC West and the NFC Central to kick around. They have the AFC East and NFC East.

“The schedule is significantly more difficult,” Weintraub said.

THE CURSE OF 370: The Outsiders have come up with this “Curse of 370” notion.

Here’s how that works, only one running back – Eric Dickerson – has managed to stare down the Curse.

“Any running back who carries 370 times or more in a single season, there is a significant dropoff or injury the next season,” Weintraub said. “Eric Dickerson is the only guy who’s beat that.”

Eric Dickerson

Eric Dickerson

Micheal Turner had 394 carries for 1,742 yards in 17 games last season.

“You are talking about a very high probability that he’s going to experience a significant (dropoff) this year,” Weintraub said. “Now, it would behoove the Falcons greatly to ease off on his carries. They have Jerious Norwood, whom we love as a back.

“If they can establish a real combination back there, that could definitely offset some of the projected decline in Turner’s numbers.”

The great Dickerson went for 1,808 yards on 390 carries in 1983. He followed that up with 2,105 yards on 379 carries in 1984.

In 1988, Dickerson had 388 carries for 1,659 yards and in 1989 he had 1,311 yards on 314 carries.

Sadly, he was worn out at age 29. By the time he got to the Falcons in 1993, Dickerson could only muster 91 yards on 26 carries.

THE X- FACTOR: The Outsiders don’t know what to do with the addition of tight end Tony Gonzalez.

Tony and October Gonzalez

Tony and October Gonzalez

“We’ve never really had a projection to account for adding a hall of fame tight end, when your biggest need is tight end,” Weintraub said. “It’s obviously a plus, assuming he stays healthy and stays at the level he’s been at.

“He’s also defied all kinds of logic and projections that we’ve done. Our numbers have said they he was going to fall off for the last three years and he hasn’t. That’s a testimony to what a great all-time great player that he is.”

CAN RYAN WIN SHOOT OUTS?: The Outsiders ranks Ryan’s rookie season as the finest of any quarterback since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

“They may have to beat teams 35-31 every week,” Weintraub said. “That’s not a sustainable way to go to the playoffs. Now, it can be done, but I think they’ll need a better plan of attack.”

THE DEFENSE: In their regression analysis, more than 100 variables were looked at for each team. They had to consider the ensuing upheaval with replacing five starters on the defense.

“These guys could step up and play lights out,” Weintraub said. “Stephen Nicholas could turn out to be a Pro Bowl linebacker, we’ll see. But the trend over the last 15 years with teams putting (five or more) starters who have played so little into their starting defense, doesn’t bode well.”

CAVEAT: They still have to play the games.

“We projected the Falcons not to be good last year,” Weintraub said. “But (Matt Ryan) significantly out performed the trends. Surely, that can happen again. We certainly acknowledge that there are times when players step up and become superstars.”

IN SUMMATION: A lot has to happen for the Falcons to end that 43-year streak of never posting back-to-back winning seasons.

“Overall, they have a lot of trends, anchoring them and weighing them back to the pack this year,” Weintraub said. “Right now the numbers say they are going to take a step back.”

And CB, don’t undersestimate yourself on the FFL. There are some great guides on there on the game as well as ranking your players, team strategy, etc. Personally, I think you could do it. Your passion for the game will allow you to do well. There are THREE keys rules in FF.

1. Do not load your team with homers (home team players).
2. Beware of your BYE weeks.
3. Have a method to your madness and STICK with it.

CB, I’m thinking three TEs. Gonzo, Hartsock, and Peele will be retained. Gonzo and Peele will be the receivers; all three are blockers with Hartsock and Gonzo among the best in the league.

Seminole, I like your take on Snelling, but even though he’s a dog, Thomas Brown could play a big role if Turner got hurt. Brown is more of the old school scatback. He’s quick between the tackles and very strong. I see Snelling as more of the LenDale White type of back. He’s a bruiser with adequate speed and nice soft hands. As far as Aaron Kelly I have to agree with you, I as you keep up with the ACC and Kelly could be a stud after a few years of on the job training. Speaking of the ACC, C.J Spiller is not projected as a first rounder or even a second rounder because he doesn’t possess natural running back size, now if we wore to lose Norwood, Spiller would be a very nice replacement in the third round. That was yesterdays discussion but Kelly made me think of the hated Tigers, GT’s real nemesis. Is FSU even fielding a team this year, if so, why, as long as Jimbo is in Tallahassee the noles wll stink.

Now on to Finn, he is a feel good story, and he has made us feel good, I think the Falcons keep him maybe one more year beyond this year, because of his overall leadership and dedication to the team. I hope after next year he retires, I would rather see him leave the game gracefully then to sit on the free agency list hoping for a chance.

Question: Does Shockley beat out Redman this year, if so does Redman have any trade value or would he just be cut, no way does a number three sit on the bench making 4.5 mil a year.

Seminole Warrior,

I agree those are the three I would go with. Gonzo…well there obvious reasons to keep him. As for Peele he made some impressive catches last season…the td’s in San Deigo and Green Bay. Speaking of the Green Bay td…what type of pay was that? If you can remember.

Hey guys, just finished reading 6 pages of comments… took me two days. I want to start off by saying that you guys know your stuff and I learned a lot. It’s good to see some constructive conversations going on here.

There’s no way I can comment on all of the points weighed during the past 6 pages as I don’t feel like writing an essay so I’ll just touch on some of the more recent ones.

First, BT, I gotta agree with you on JA98. If I’m calling the shots and paying the bills, I need to see something out of JA98 this year — something like 5-7 sacks as mentioned before, and more tackles. We can’t have a definite weak side of the line. I’d love to see us give a shot at some 3-4 defense with heavy rotation.

Also, Norwood. JN. This guy is a freak. I loved him since we got him, and I was stoked when I thought he was going to be the starter last year. I was disappointed when we got Turner at first, but man… Have I ever been this wrong? That guy is a HORSE… A BEAST. Still — I would hate to see JN go, I want his dynamic play on our team. Fast, deadly in the open. For those who said he isn’t quick I’d have to disagree; for those who said he isnt durable I’d have to disagree. He makes movements, cuts, spins, and appears to be off-balance but it always seems to be just enough to get him out of reach and still maintain speed — not mention he has a pretty mean stiffarm for a guy his size. If you watch his highlights, this guy doesn’t shy away from contact. I think he has an underrated skill for taking tackles the right way to minimize the possibility of being injured — I don’t really recall him being injured more than one game of any season… could be mistaken. Anyway, I couldn’t blame him taking more money elsewhere, but I would love to see him on our team during the SUPERBOWL we’ll see within the next 2 or 3 years max. He does deserve more money. I think we can find some for him. I think our management sees the asset that he is.

CBrass — On a related note: the possibility of Turner getting hurt this season… Would suck, would hurt our team, but would be relatively manageable. Matt Ryan gets hurt — God forbid — we’re screwed. We will still have Norwood and Snelling and Brown, they’ve ALL shown that they have promise. We know what Norwood can do, and with the compliment of Snelling and Brown we still have a power back and a more agile one.

WR — Concerning the weight changes on the Falcons… I was recently reading an article that was saying AP was trying to gain weight. This poor guy… I don’t blame him. He is their offensive crutch, he takes such a beating, he needs some extra padding. However, in the article it was explaining (with examples of previous players) that the added weight does not really protect against injuries. They highlighted the fact that it’s all extra weight to your ankles and knees, and may result in more wear and tear on your lower body as you run and make cuts. SO: Turner — do I blame him? NO! Do I like it? NO! Let’s remember he’s been in the league for what? 6 years or so? But he’s only been starting one of those years. HD.. WHY! You were perfect! I loved HD last year (also, I think he would be a nice backup if Roddy were to go down, good on the long ball, good speed, pretty good route running.) I hope this doesn’t slow him down too much. I’ve also heard from more than one source that Matt Ryan has been KILLING the weight room, and has bulked up considerably. I LIKE THIS. He’s going to be tougher, and have a little more of an arm. Now that I think about it, one of the people who mentioned Matt’s offseason habit was Ovie Mughelli and I belive he used the word “SCARY” to describe how much he’s done in the offseason (strength training only being one of them), and I gotta say, Ovie is SO underrated as blocker/fullback and moral booster he can catch too!)

Whew. Am I rambling on? Too bad — I’m not done. Let me tell you, lastly, that I have so much faith in our GM and HC. Look at what they put together in such a short time. Amazing eye for talent, TD has (accidentally typed like Yoda, decided to leave it due to awesomeness.) Let me start with our D because that’s harder. WE HAVE DEPTH. Belive it or not, we do. We’re really young but we have gads of talent all over. I’m a bit concerned about our LB corps in the future but no doubt TD has a plan. Look, we have battles for starting positions all over our defense, and that’s a good thing. Here’s my take on our team as a whole, now that I’ve touched on defense. We have a top 5 offense, no doubt in my mind. Here’s what I see of our plan. We have ball control on our offense. We have tons of options of ways to get it up the field, and we’ll have a great conversion ratio. Also, lets not forget last year our 1st quarter scoring rank in the NFL… This team is designed to play from ahead. We will control the clock. Once we’re ahead, our defense, when on the field, will have an easier job. We’ll stop the run. Look at our DLine, we have both star pash rushers and run cloggers, and plenty of room to rotate and keep people rested. Our LB’s are designed to a be consistant compliment to our DLine. Secondary? YOUNG. But lets look at them, with all of the competition, we generally have hard hitting (fumbles + intimidation for the WR/RB) BALL HAWKS (interceptions/intimidation for the QB.) Get it? We’re ahead. They’re trying to catch up, we are looking for them to make a mistake, then get picked. I mean, look who we got in the second and third round this year (both of them have a chance to start.) William Moore (S), who many experts compare to Brian Dawkins (Moore is okay in coverage, but a beast in interceptions and great in the box against the run.) We also got Chris Ownens (CB), who some experts compare to Asante Samuel! I see us rotating our safeties, and having Owens play slot until we know for sure he can start.

All things considered, as is the nature of the NFL, you never know what will happen. That said, I think we can beat any team in the NFL, and if we stay completely healthy OR if everyone plays to their potential, we could taste an Superbowl as early as this year. If we’re healthy AND we have everyone play to their potential… Well, you get the point. With our schedule, I see us winning our division and going 10-6 in the regular season.

I didn’t realize I had that much to say. Thanks for reading, if you made it all the way through I would love to hear some comments.

Falcons backup C Jeremy Newberry is reportedly retiring from football.

The 11-year veteran has been dealing with bad knees for years, and the knee on which microfracture surgery was performed five years ago was getting “worse and worse.” The Falcons cut Alex Stepanovich shortly after signing Newberry, so he could be an option to return.

My ACC brother, I will send you a bottle of your favorite for the top notch analysis you just presented. I’m on record as a Jimbo hater. He is by far the most-overrated coach in college football. LSU was loaded and we all know that the SEC West, outside of Auburn, was garbage.

As far as Brown goes, I will have to defer to what the DAWGS in the house have stated. I’ve seen enough of Snelling to know that he can be a stud. Snelling is a slightly larger version of a player that burst onto the scene last year but will fool no one this year…Pierre Thomas of the Saints.

Spiller is THE perfect replacement for Norwood should he depart. There would not be missed beat. Actually, I think Spiller is larger right? And he can hit the hole as well as burn down the house.

I really do not know about Shock. He has had two years to work with QB guru Bill Musgrave. This is his preseason to shine. I agree with you on the cap hit for Redman but I think he would easily restructure to stay in ATL. No one else would really show any interest I think.

The league is set for an uncapped year in 2010 because the owners elected to “opt out” of the collective bargaining agreement. A new deal needs to be in place by February 2010 or teams will have that “uncapped” year in 2010. If White and the Falcons don’t reach a deal, under the old rules, he was set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season. If the “uncapped” year scenario plays out, White would become a restricted free agent for one year and could hit the open market after the 2010 season.

Still waiting to hear it on either NFL.com or ESPN NFL, those usually have the most correct information when it comes to stuff like this, but if that’s true, that looks to be a pretty big blow to our awesome depth we had developed and Quinn Ojinnaka would now all but be assured a spot unless they wait to snag someone either off waiver once cuts happen or develop someone in house (Michael Butterworth, Ryan Stanchek, or Jose Valdez).

WR, Juice, CBrass, If Turner was to go down, we would no doubt struggle at first running the ball. MR would probably go to a short passing game to replace while TB and Snelling get acclimated to more touches. You would see a 3 headed RB by committie with Snelling, JN, and TB.

If MR goes down Redman could hold the fort for a week or two. If (God Forbid) it’s season ending we would be screwed. But what happens if DJ beats Redman out for the backup? I think Redman still jumps to starter if MR is out for a long period of time.

Don’t underestimate Redman’s leadership. He could be to the Birds in this scenario (God forbid) what Trent Dilfer was in 2000 for the Ravens. Dilfer was a smart keeper of the flame. He managed a strong running game and made key plays where he had to. Granted, our D is not the Ravens D, but we have one element that understands what that D was all about; their D line coach that year, Mike Smith. We will be better, still maybe bending but not breaking, but if thir horrible scenario was to play, Mad Mike would still fine ways to make the offense lethal.

I’ve got to see Shock do it in a complete game…maybe he will get a half+ in the preseason to show us. But for know, I got to go with Redman based on the work I have seen, though that work is limited.

It was funny to hear a Noles fan feel the way that I do, at some point everybody I grew up with pulled for the Noles or Miami, gotta admit I went with the U. Jimbo is horribly overrated, most say he will take over for Bowden once he retires and I believe that will be a serious mistake. I know I joke about the free shoes U, which it was, but honestly the team hasn’t been the same since Richt left, actually, Georgia hasn’t been the same since Richt left FSU. I’m sorry my ACC brother but if Jimbo is FSU’s coach of the future you might want to look at adopting another team.

honestly the team hasn’t been the same since Richt left, actually, Georgia hasn’t been the same since Richt left FSU.

WR, you are so right, and I am glad CMR is at UGA. I was Happy that Tech hired CPJ, well not as much now after the beatdown your Jackets gave us last NOV.

Jason, no point in lying, Richt brought UGA back to its rightful place in the SEC, Goff killed UGA, and Donnan threw the dirt on the grave, but Richt revived the program. As I said I’m with the state of Georgia, if UGA is not playing Tech, you best believe I’m cheering on the dogs.

We all want the team to go 16-0 and win the Super Bowl, but a trend is a trend, and the Falcons ALWAYS suck after a winning season.

WR,

The recipe I have is a vinager and pepper sauce. It generally is used at pig pickin’s as a base as well as an additive once you have pulled the pork. It is not like anything you can buy. If you want it, it’s yours.

Seminole, my ACC brother, this is a sad day, because I have to align myself with a dog, because I know ya’ll are going to suck for years to come, pray the old man stays many more years, or at least he changes his will.

WR, I am the same way. I just have a great respect for the caliber atheletes in the state of GA. What always killed UGA was teams USC East, Clemson, TENN, and AUB raiding GA for our recruits. CMR turned that around for us, and that’s the biggest reason for our recent success. Jasper Sanks or Jamaal Lewis… Need I say more. UGA did not even try to recruit Lewis.

WR, I don’t think any one Coach could come Post BB and win games. It will take a few years for FSU to rise again. A few more years and possibly a few more HCs.

jason,

That would be The USC. West is the “other” USC.

WR, I respect a true fan for his love of his team and his loyalty to the truth. You are such a fan and man. Even if Jimbo wrecks my beloved ‘Noles, I will never surrender the deep love I have for FSU. It would be like giving up on my Braves, Hawks, and Falcons.

Jimbo will come and go. But the Seminole nation, the ONLY unconquered, unbeaten tribe in HISTORY, will never surrender. We may be down for a while but, baby brother, we will NEVER be out!!

WR, the truth does not lie. Richt clearly was the man behind the magic at FSU. And now, he has UGA on the cusp. Have you ever had the chance to meet the dude? Is there a more open and real coach in the game? I think not.

UnCa B,

My point exactly..thus my proposal. Anyone have TD’s email address? I will send it to him.

CBrass, can you handle that for me?

As long as the Trojans live, we will all be out, if the Trojans stopped underestimating there lesser opponents they would rule the college football world. I hate to admit it but the Trojans are the 33rd NFL team. Carroll has worked miracles for that team, and to think if they are not playing in the national championship game, they are playing at home in the Rose Bowl, the old FSU could give them a run for their money, but that is the old FSU. Most will disagree but if the Trojans had not lost to Arizona state, Florida would not be your National Champions.
