Got a case of the offseason football blues?

DOWN ON THE DELTA – Got a bad case of the offseason down home blues.

There are no OTAs to cover. No mini-camps. The draft has been over for months.

Have to push away from the football table, try to re-charge and then be ready to strike when things heat back up.

This is officially the “offseason” for the NFL. About the only thing going on before training camp is the rookie “don’t act a fool when you get your money” symposium.

Someone named “ATLJBO” has this six minute highlight tape of the Falcons 2009 offseason additions out on youtube. It’s pretty cool.

To pass time, I’ve tried to watch a couple of Braves games. Been following the Hawks in the draft and free agency.

Rode the roller coasters at Six Flags yesterday.

Got to set up the second annual golf match with Falcons VP of Communications Reggie Roberts. He got me

last year. I must  win this re-match and the right to talk wrestling smack all season long.

I’ve been walking two-miles in the mornings the last two weeks to get ready for the Peachtree Road Walk. Others will be racing. I’ll be walking.

In my role as Second Vice President of the Professional Football Writers or America, I’ve been reviewing the league’s 2009 medial access policy. A couple nice rules changes that will help the fans follow their teams. Can share those later.

Also, my buddy and former editor Garry D. Howard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel was recently inaugurated as President of the Associated Press Sports Editors.

Leon Carter (New York Daily News), APSE President Garry D. Howard, Stephen A. Smith, the lovely Donna Howard and Jennifer Howard in front.

Leon Carter (New York Daily News), APSE President Garry D. Howard, Stephen A. Smith, the lovely Donna Howard and Jennifer Howard in front.

Football-wise, saw that Mike Brown signed with the Chiefs. So that makes Lawyer Milloy the top unsigned veteran safety.

But there is one area on the team that I’ve been studying a lot this offseason.

I understand why they have  Curtis Lofton at middle linebacker, Michael Peterson at weakside and Stephen Nicholas at strongside. But trying to make sense of the reserves is pretty intriguing. There are going to be some good roster battles and if the first teamers fall on their faces, there appears to be help.

Here’s a look at the reserve linebackers:

Special teams maven Coy Wire.

Special teams maven Coy Wire.

COY WIRE, 6-0, 228: Can play all three positions. Took over for Michael Boley in running situations late last season. Played some safety earlier in his career. Is one of the top special team players.

Edmond Miles

Edmond Miles

EDMOND MILES, 6-0, 243: From Tallahassee. Played at Godby High. Always want to know why guys from Florida leave the state. Miles played at Iowa. Did Miami, Florida State or Florida not recruit him? Was he a late bloomer? Did he just want to play right away at Iowa? Made the Dolphins as an undrafted rookie in 2007. Played mostly weakside linebacker in college.

ROBERT JAMES, 5-10, 218: Fifth round pick in 2008. Didn’t play last season after suffering a head injury

Robert "The Beast" James led Arizona State with 106 tackles in 2007.

Robert "The Beast" James led Arizona State with 106 tackles in 2007.

and was placed on injured reserve. A super-fast, run-and-hit guy. Fits the teams “need for speed” profile. Have to worry about him being a little to small. Nicknamed “The Beast” in college.

TONY GILBERT, 6-0, 248: The former Georgia Bulldog was signed late last exhibition season. He was not active for any games last season. But he knows the system and quietly goes about his business. With Peterson coming over there might not be a place for Gilbert. If something happens to Lofton, Peterson, a former MLB with Jacksonville, could shift to the middle.

SPENCER ADKINS, 5-11, 246: Played a lot of weakside for the Hurricanes. Is extremely fast with good striking ability. He will have to make the team on special teams. “An intriguing natural talent who was used primarily as a situational pass rusher. . . but his lack of instincts always could restrict him from developing,” according to Pro Football Weekly’s 2009 Draft Preview.

RASHAD BOBINO, 5-11, 230: Played on some good defenses at Texas, starting 45 of 52 games over his productive career. Went undrafted, despite being all-Big 12 three times. He’s definitely a player to watch when training camp opens.

Mainstays, Keith Brooking and Michael Boley are gone off to Dallas and New York.

Reggie Roberts, Falcons VP. "You're going down!!"

Reggie Roberts, Falcons VP of Communications. "You're Going Down!!!"

But what about the depth at this position. Do you like it? Worried about them being too small?
Any sleepers in the bunch? And yeah, Roberts, you’re going down!!!

Wow, Sarah, I guess I’m not good enough, you just bypassed me and started looking for my friends, whats one to think, anyway, yeah I have single friends, chances are they will remain single I guess you could say I taught them wrong. Wasn”t my intention though, we all go out and the more I try not to be bothered the more I am. I have always been asked what did you say and I reply I don’t know, they always figure I’m lying and just not spreading the game but to me its not no game I honestly just try to be me, I’m a lot like my mom, probably to much, because she says whats on her mind with out giving it a second thought and I do to. Sometimes it sounds awful but its the truth as far as we are concerned, so there is no second guessing as far as what we feel, for some strange reason women find that to be a good quality even while I’m being brutally honest and saying things they probably don’t want to hear.

Back in the ‘Cage Again! Great to be back with my brethren after a nice, relaxing mini-vaca up in East Tennessee seeing the House CEO’s family. Recharged and ready to go as we’re under 26 days until training camp. Picked a bad time to take a sabbatical from the Bird’s blog. Looks like I missed some humor, confrontation, and some hate-fishing out there. Proud of my fellow ‘Cage members for not taking the bait. Don’t even acknowledge that corrosive bile spewing out of their mouths. When we even respond to that garbage, we validate that it is actually a comment worth something. To ‘Birds and ‘Ball………….

Ken Strick – great 10 point analysis on our potential this year. Just playing devil’s advocate, but I think we might want to temper our expectations just a tad on our defense. Our defense is loaded with potential, but its still potential until they show they can gel together and play as a unit. We probably can’t do a lot worse than last year’s DEF, but even though we gave up a ton of yards, we did good limiting points last year ranking 11th in points given up per game. Does having one of the lightest DT tandems in the NFL concern you?

Falconless in Seattle – I’m not completely drinking the Saints Kool-Aid, but I think they be pretty tough if they can get their DEF to improve ANY. Malcom Jenkins was a good pick and Sedrick Ellis should be healthy, but other than that they had a pretty crappy draft. How’s the reports of Lil’ Jimmy Mora out there in Sea-town?

WR – great point to bring up. This is first and foremost a football forum, but we talk about all kinds of things on here. Even though none of us have probably met, we share a feeling of concern for one another. Of all my buddies, I’m the only one who doesn’t have a Facebook account. When asked why not, I say “because I got the Bird-Cage!” That’s all the social network I need. Its a fun hobby.

JJ – thanks for asking the “keeping it real.” It was a question that many of us benefited from having it answered. Didn’t watch the PGA tour that Tiger won. I was too busy watching that epic Wimbledon match, pulling for my boy Andy Roddick. Normally not a tennis fan, but love to root for Americans in any sport. Hated to see him lose such a great match. Now watching my boy Lance resurrect and give himself an excellent chance to win it for an EIGHTH TIME! Madden won’t come out until like mid-August. Sucks, huh? Also, might have a little surprise coming soon to liven up July, August, and beyond.

falmouth – thanks for your effort to re-direct our convo’s back off that hate spewing out of the mouths of idiots. Notice, without acknowledgement, they simply fade away. Its a beautiful thing.

falcon21 – here’s a little info I got our NW GA (Calhoun) WR commitment Da’rick Rogers. 6′2, 197; 4.34 40-Time. WOW!…..
“Rogers is a special talent. He has all the tools to be an elite receiver on the next level. He is built like a linebacker, but he is a smooth athlete that runs well, that has great body control, and he has as much potential as anyone in Georgia. He is a great straightline runner, but needs to improve flexibility. If he puts everything together, then he can be a 2010 signee that plays as a true freshman. – Chad Simmmons – South Recruiting Analyst.”
Can you imagine him, AJ Green, and Marlon Brown?

jason – sounds like a great thing getting all the boys(and girls) back on board as we creep ever so slowly to Training Camp. What’s the word over there at the Bravo’s? Win 5, lose two. Time to clean house with some of those guys, namely (G.Anderson, K.Johnson, Francouer, Kotchman, etc, etc). Did you ever find out about a possible transfer to GA?

Offical APB’s (All Points Bulletin) – going along with jason’s note I’m officially sending out search and rescues for some of our fellow ‘Cagers who have gone missing for some time now. Time to get the ENTIRE crew back together:
-Seminole Warrior
-Nookah
-Lil’ Dave
-Marko
-Reno911
-Falcon Devil
-dacha

Great to be back ladies and gents! More to come later. And on that note………..25 DAYS, 14 DAYS, & 6 MINS to MOST COMPETITIVE, EXCITING FALCONS TRAINING CAMP IN HISTORY!

Tony G. believes in us and why not for the first time ever we have it all and he completes it. The Falcons with SUPER aspirations you gotta believe WWWWWOOOOOOOOOO HHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOO go Falcons can’t wait for training camp too bad we have to wait so long for the first games Aug.15th Sept.15th bummer.why so late.I also wonder if it’s a record of playing teams coming off a bye never heard of anyone having to do what we must.see ya

D3, funny you should say that about facebook, I feel the same way. The people I want to keep up with, I keep up with, I kind of consider facebook a place where people try to figure out if they were known. If you didn’t know me when I was one of your peers why do you want to know me now. Nothing against people on facebook, but I made my life, when times were bad the people that cared were there, when times were good those same people were there to celebrate the good. Its pretty much how I view Falcons fans, and why the cage is such a release, if you are a true Falcons fan you have suffered but you have kept the faith, no matter how excited I am about the upcoming season I still have that little voice of doubt and I am looking forward to the birds putting an end to that feeling this year.

JJ, have you noticed that the ratings for the NFC on Madden have been posted on espn.com. If you go by the Madden ratings William Moore will be a starting safety this year. Moore is rated much higher than Decoud which is strange considering Decoud has a year in the pros and Moore is a rookie.

Reno911,

I got this recipe from the President of South Carolina B-B-Q Asso. I have not tried it yet but it is from a very good source. We havn’t heard from you in a while so if you recieve this, let me know, please.

Basic Vinegar and Pepper BBQ Sauce

Vinegar and pepper sauce is so easy to make that you seldom find it on the market because most people won’t pay for a little bottle of something they can easily make up themselves. When I do see one (which is seldom) I generally get it just to try it and see what their variation on it is. Most aren’t worth it.

If you do find one for sale they almost always have some “secret ingredient” that just is their favorite spice. Northerners and Westerners like chili and cumin but Southerners seldom add it and I certainly don’t.

Vinegar and pepper is the best basting sauce for any real barbeque. The thicker sauces with lots of spices are more like a finishing sauce and a dipping sauce. The recipe below is the one I use when I want my own.

1 gallon of white vinegar (use a good brand not store brand). I use White House. Heinz is too sharp for me. Some people like apple cider vinegar but that is generally too sharp and has too much cider flavor for me.

½ cup of salt; either sea salt or kosher salt not the kind in the round blue box.

1 ounce (by weight) of red pepper flakes

1 ounce (by weight) of black pepper

2 tablespoons of sugar; or a half cup of molasses. This gives it good “mouth feel” and take the edge off the vinegar.

If you like it hotter, add more red pepper… Less hot? Use less pepper next time.

Most people want it sweeter than I do but the old timers seldom used any sugar or molasses at all.

After you get the above in a big bowl you can adjust it to your taste by dipping out a half cup or so and adding some of your own spices and such. With a little experimenting you will have a real vinegar and pepper sauce that is your very own and you can be sure it suits you

Sarah, come on now, no offense taken, its all in the name of fun. To answer your question though, yes, and the sad thing about it is that it appears we had the same partner, maybe they were brother and sister twins.

Unca’ Bob, how could you exclude me from a BBQ recipe, I thought we were brothers in the cage, trust me when I say I am always up for some good BBQ or wings. Now if you find the wing recipe for taco mac wings you will officially be the man in my book. I had some really good BBQ over the weekend, we had a family reunion on my mother’s side of the family and I came to the conclusion that I can no longer date anyone from Fayette county or Peachtree city, it appears that they are all relatives.

D3, glad your back, I was wondering what you would think about about all the regulars of the bird cage getting into our own fantasy league for this up coming season.

D3-Eveb though our DEF has a lot of potential, I do think our starting DEF will be based more on actual talent and ability than potential. The veterab players that are in position to assume starting positions, like DT TLewis, SS TDeCoud, AHarris and JFudge, CB’s VHutchins, BGrimes, DIrons and CJackson, LB’s SNicholas and MPeterson and DE’s CDavis and KBiermann are all proven veterans at this point. For the most part, very little potential will be included in our starting lineup, and any player that’s included in our rotations will have proven their worth
after intense competition during training camp.

The other reason I feel so strongly about our DEF is our coaching staff. We gave up am awful lot or passing and rushing yardage last yr, but very few points, comparatively speaking. That was directly due to an outstanding job of coaching, especially when you consider the number of season ending injuries they had to deal with. I can only imagine how much more effective they’ll be with the infusion of speed, quickness, mobility, youth, versatility, athleticism and depth they’ll have to work with. I JUST CAN’T SEE HOW THE ADDITIONS TO OUR ACTIVE ROSTER OF DT’S PJERRY, TLEWIS AND VWALKER, LB’S MPETERSON, SADKINS AND RJAMES, SS/FS WMOORE AND AHARRIS, CB’S DIRONS, COWENS, BGRIMES AND VHUTCHINS AND DE LSIDBURY WON’T ALLOW US TO REDUCE THE EXCESSIVE RUSHING AND PASSING YARDAGE ALLOWED LAST YR, AND FURTHER REDUCE THE POINTS ALLOWED.

Any rookie that earns a starting slot this yr will have to beat out a veteran player to do so. This isn’t like last yr when certain rookies were automatically given starting positions, like QB MRyan, LDT SBaker and MLB CLofton. They didn’t have to earn starting positions, their starting positions were theirs to lose from day one. Not a single one of this yrs draftees will have an automatic starting slot given to them. Last yr, it would have been correct to talk about potential, but not this yr. THIS YR IT’S GOING TO BE ABOUT TALENT, ABILITY ABD PERFORMANCE, NOT POTENTIAL.

KS: I’m not sure I would count on anything from Hutchins this season. That Lisfranc fracture he had is really serious, and arthritis is a common complication. What’s Goin’ on My Fellow ‘Cagers? Good times rolling along here during the dog days of summer, scorching heat, good grillin’, and getting ever so closer to the big day: 2009 Training Camp! It’ll be here before you know it. To ‘Birds and ‘Ball……..

falcon21 – I’m not completely sold on the Saints, but if everything fell into place, which would be a lot, they might could make some noise. Reggie Bush is turning out to be just like his buddy Matt Leinart: pretty boy USC guys who like the idea of being a football player, rather than actually working hard to achieve. We’ll see.

Tim – thanks for the props my friend. We certainly welcome your opinion and its a great way to pass the time as we try to entertain ourselves as we move ever so closer to August. I’ve usually never given a crap about pre-season…until now. I can’t wait for this one. All credit goes to TD & Smitty for that one.

JJ – what’s up my friend? Thanks, but until it goes live I’m not counting my eggs yet. It all seems a go, but I’m just playing the waiting game at this point. That’s the main reason I haven’t really said anything. If it does go forwards, I’ve got a bunch of stuff ready for us. Can’t wait for this year’s Madden, for obvious reasons. They should release it exactly one month from the first game in order to give us something to do for chrissake.

Sarah B. – you’re definitely not the only one who doesn’t have a Facebook account. But people who I never in a million years would have one, does. I got my social networking here in the ‘Cage. What fireworks did you shoot off? I set off a few good ones in Tenn on July 4th. $20 gone in like 2 minutes.

WR – you know I’m all in for a fantasy league for sure. The thing is that we’ve got to get at least 8 in. I’m in, you, & Sarah, but do we have 5 more?

Coach Ken – Oh, I definitely agree about the potential we have ready to go. I guess I’m just a bit superstitous on pumping up our team before the season starts. Jerry and Lewis having serious injury histories makes me a little nervous. By every account, we should see vast improvement.

SPS – nice point on Hutchins. He may be in great with the coaching staff, but he will have a serious climb to get over injury and win a spot, especially if we only carry 5 CB’s.

Good stuff peeps. DOL’s gotta a new blog up, I guess we’ll see you over there!

Sarah B

I’m definately up for a fantasy league. Can we do it on Yahoo? That’s the one we use for our work league so I know it well. We have at least 5 so far so 3 more should not be hard. No more than 12 though, last year we had 12 and when you had an injury the waiver wire was empty and it was pot luck.
