DOWN ON THE DELTA – Got a bad case of the offseason down home blues.

There are no OTAs to cover. No mini-camps. The draft has been over for months.

Have to push away from the football table, try to re-charge and then be ready to strike when things heat back up.

This is officially the “offseason” for the NFL. About the only thing going on before training camp is the rookie “don’t act a fool when you get your money” symposium.

Someone named “ATLJBO” has this six minute highlight tape of the Falcons 2009 offseason additions out on youtube. It’s pretty cool.

To pass time, I’ve tried to watch a couple of Braves games. Been following the Hawks in the draft and free agency.

Rode the roller coasters at Six Flags yesterday.

Got to set up the second annual golf match with Falcons VP of Communications Reggie Roberts. He got me

last year. I must  win this re-match and the right to talk wrestling smack all season long.

I’ve been walking two-miles in the mornings the last two weeks to get ready for the Peachtree Road Walk. Others will be racing. I’ll be walking.

In my role as Second Vice President of the Professional Football Writers or America, I’ve been reviewing the league’s 2009 medial access policy. A couple nice rules changes that will help the fans follow their teams. Can share those later.

Also, my buddy and former editor Garry D. Howard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel was recently inaugurated as President of the Associated Press Sports Editors.

Leon Carter (New York Daily News), APSE President Garry D. Howard, Stephen A. Smith, the lovely Donna Howard and Jennifer Howard in front.

Leon Carter (New York Daily News), APSE President Garry D. Howard, Stephen A. Smith, the lovely Donna Howard and Jennifer Howard in front.

Football-wise, saw that Mike Brown signed with the Chiefs. So that makes Lawyer Milloy the top unsigned veteran safety.

But there is one area on the team that I’ve been studying a lot this offseason.

I understand why they have  Curtis Lofton at middle linebacker, Michael Peterson at weakside and Stephen Nicholas at strongside. But trying to make sense of the reserves is pretty intriguing. There are going to be some good roster battles and if the first teamers fall on their faces, there appears to be help.

Here’s a look at the reserve linebackers:

Special teams maven Coy Wire.

Special teams maven Coy Wire.

COY WIRE, 6-0, 228: Can play all three positions. Took over for Michael Boley in running situations late last season. Played some safety earlier in his career. Is one of the top special team players.

Edmond Miles

Edmond Miles

EDMOND MILES, 6-0, 243: From Tallahassee. Played at Godby High. Always want to know why guys from Florida leave the state. Miles played at Iowa. Did Miami, Florida State or Florida not recruit him? Was he a late bloomer? Did he just want to play right away at Iowa? Made the Dolphins as an undrafted rookie in 2007. Played mostly weakside linebacker in college.

ROBERT JAMES, 5-10, 218: Fifth round pick in 2008. Didn’t play last season after suffering a head injury

Robert "The Beast" James led Arizona State with 106 tackles in 2007.

Robert "The Beast" James led Arizona State with 106 tackles in 2007.

and was placed on injured reserve. A super-fast, run-and-hit guy. Fits the teams “need for speed” profile. Have to worry about him being a little to small. Nicknamed “The Beast” in college.

TONY GILBERT, 6-0, 248: The former Georgia Bulldog was signed late last exhibition season. He was not active for any games last season. But he knows the system and quietly goes about his business. With Peterson coming over there might not be a place for Gilbert. If something happens to Lofton, Peterson, a former MLB with Jacksonville, could shift to the middle.

SPENCER ADKINS, 5-11, 246: Played a lot of weakside for the Hurricanes. Is extremely fast with good striking ability. He will have to make the team on special teams. “An intriguing natural talent who was used primarily as a situational pass rusher. . . but his lack of instincts always could restrict him from developing,” according to Pro Football Weekly’s 2009 Draft Preview.

RASHAD BOBINO, 5-11, 230: Played on some good defenses at Texas, starting 45 of 52 games over his productive career. Went undrafted, despite being all-Big 12 three times. He’s definitely a player to watch when training camp opens.

Mainstays, Keith Brooking and Michael Boley are gone off to Dallas and New York.

Reggie Roberts, Falcons VP. "You're going down!!"

Reggie Roberts, Falcons VP of Communications. "You're Going Down!!!"

But what about the depth at this position. Do you like it? Worried about them being too small?
Any sleepers in the bunch? And yeah, Roberts, you’re going down!!!

thanx Unca Bob,
yep, had already read it. was pretty vague so i wasn’t sure. “patrolling ‘like’ an NFL free safety,” reference to being a “hybrid,” talk about other players at the safety position (never saying which safety position)
{The Falcons drafted Missouri safety William Moore in the second round. The team also returns 2008 starter Erik Coleman, Antoine Harris, Jamaal Fudge and Eric Brock at the position.}
nice article but it was a little confusing and vague. in j. mike’s defense tho, not much is concrete this early.

atljbo, i agree about adkins. can’t wait to see when he starts understanding the game better!

There are many ways for a team to improve. What’s most often ignored or not fully recognized is the impact of certain intangibles, and that’s going to be the motivating factor behind the vast improvement of the Falcons OFF. Quite often, not having to add a lot of talent to an OFF contributes to their improvement.

As we saw from the success of last yrs OFF, adding TE TGonzalez wasn’t a necessity, but a tremendous upgrade. Aside from his addition, the major upgrades to this yrs OFF will come as a result of INTANGIBLES THAT WERE ABSENT AT THE START OF LAST SEASON. THEY ARE:

(1) We knowing our OL can protect the QB and consistently provide running lanes for our RB’s.

(2) We know we have the best young QB in the NFL who had one of the most successful rookie campaigns in NFL history.

(3) WE know we have one of the, if not the, best TE in the NFL, and a 2nd yr WR in HDouglas that’s good enough to provide a serious challenge to our #2 starting WR, MJenkins.

(4)We know our rushing OFF is good enough to have finished 2nd in the NFL last yr.

We knowing our entire OFF will return intact, except for the addition of synamic TE TGonzalez.

(5) We know we’ll start the season with our entire OFF system in place and what we have to work on to get even better.

(7) We now know what to expect from newcomers to last yrs OFF like LT SBaker, RB MTurner, RG HDahl and QB MRyan.

On DEF, we’ll have no more one dimensional past their prime players, especially as starters. We know we’ll have:

(1) An improved pass rush, both from the interior and off the edges.

(2) Improvement and more versatility and depth at OLB, SS, DT and DE.

(3) More speed, quickness, mobility, athleticism, youth and stamina, as well as depth, at every DEF position.

The DEF’s of the Bucs and Panthers are in decline while the Falcon DEF is on the rise. The Saints DEF has no way to go but up, since it’s been so bad. The Saints OFF is very dynamic, but fragile. because if they lose any one of 3 players, QB DBrees, RB’s DMcCalister and RBush, they’ll collapse. THE ATLANTA FALCONS ARE THE CLASS OF THE NFC SOUTH.

The NFC teams to beat, aside from the Falcons, will be the Cardinals, Eagles, Giants and Vikings. We defeated the Vikings and barely lost to the Eagles and Cardinals last yr and the Giants have yet to recover from the loss of WR PBurress. The thing about pass happy teams like Philly and New Orleans is if you get to the QB, they are dead in the water.

[...] like to sit down and discuss the team we all love so dearly. I’ll direct you toward this selection of musings from the AJC’s D. Orlando Ledbetter, who takes a brief look at some backup linebacking [...]

Aren’t the Saints picked to win the division every year??????? How’d they do last year????? How are they better??? According to the odds the Falcons weren’t even a 8-8 team last year and all they did was almost win the NFC South, missing out by a single win. Now all they did was get better during the off season. So F#$K Vegas. I hate that place anyway.

Thanks Unca’ Bob- Fox Sports

3. Falcons’ offense will be better than Panthers’ offense

Sure, the Atlanta offense doesn’t boast a Steve Smith or have a running back combination with the versatility of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

But Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, the impact of Tony Gonzalez and one of the most underrated offensive lines in the NFL give the Falcons the edge.

What will “Matty Ice” do for an encore after one of the single greatest rookie seasons at quarterback in NFL history? How about become even more dominant after general manager Thomas Dimitroff didn’t rest on his laurels, dealing for one of the most prolific tight ends in NFL history? Ryan tossed 16 touchdowns last year. Having Gonzalez will equal at least 22 touchdowns this season. It will give Ryan the ability to work the middle of the field more. And with safety help rolling in Gonzo’s direction, WR Roddy White will score over 10 touchdowns this year after last season’s breakout stunning campaign of 88 catches and 1,382 receiving yards. And Gonzo still has at least three years left of playing at a Hall of Fame clip.

Michael Turner literally ran with his first opportunity to be a bell-cow back, with just under 1,700 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Who needs Michael Vick?

What!!!

Sarah, all you did was fire off some illegal fireworks, I have been trying to keep it real because you are not only a falcons fan but a student of the game, but I’m starting to believe you need to fire off some fire works of your own, I thought Vegas would get it done for you, but obviously not, I got to keep it real, I will continue to keep it real for the cage and sorry in advance to anyone offended, but Sarah you need to have someone come in and just plain break your back like they were getting paid for it.

Okay back to football, hopefully no one was too offended by the post above but if you were thats your problem and life goes on. The birds are about a month away from getting started in training camp and I am truly excited. We go back in the past constantly to remember the times of old, but this team and administration truly has the makings of something special. We go back and forth on overall analysis, we go back and forth on what should or shouldn’t be, but we all agree and are thirsty for a winner, yeah as a Tech fan I have always had the Jackets to root for, as a native of Georgia I have always rooted for Georgai teams, but to have the birds use their talent and progress to their max would be a dream. Are the falcons a superbowl contender yes, keeping it real, do I see them winning a superbowl this year, no, but it makes me feel good to know that they should be in the hunt, and if their in the hunt this year, expecting or anticipating a superbowl next year would not be unreasonable. Now when is the last time you could say that about the Falcons.

It always amazes me when someone like WHAT!!!criticizes someone else for stating the Falcons ALMOST won the division, yet the team he obviously supports couldn’t do that. What does it say about a team that’s been picked on multiple occasions to win their division, as well as make it to the Superbowl, and each time ends up finishing last in their division or not even making the playoffs.

Last yr, the Falcons were picked to finish dead last and came within a gm of winning the division. Which team do you think anyone in possession of an actual IQ should be criticizing?

Everyone knows Mcnairs murder was done by a black man. Perhaps a robbery crew, or perhaps a drug dealer that he was an aquaintence with. Its only the politically correct pansies and the blacks in denial that their culture sucks and has no morals, that would even think that it was a murder suicide, or that the victims family had anything to do with it.
No racism here, just keeping it real.

Sarah, I know, glad you got the point and weren’t offended. We all talk football but for most of us who have been in the cage and pay attention we understand that this place is more than a Falcons blog, its a place of good release. It would be hard for you to say anything like I said and be taken seriously on a sports blog, so I said it for you and you got the point, besides you have shown in the past that you have thick skin, and your always up for some fun.

Falcon21, its all in good fun, I would never say anything intentionally to offend anyone. Every now and then you have to pay attention to the post and understand that a good pick me up goes a long way in a persons day. I talk Falcons all the time and I pay attention to the variety of comments and sometimes I see post where a person can use a pick me up, so I try to add a little humor. If I ever become some kind of dirt bag then by all means call me out, but consider what I’m saying and the response of the recipient before you consider me a dirt bag.

JJ, keeping it real is the truth that some people think but never say. Kind of like standing in line at McDonalds behind a 500 lb man wondering and thinking he should not be ordering two big macs with an extra large fry and a diet coke. Probably could be considered a hip hop term but I don’t think so, its more of a warning before the brutal truth falls out of your mouth.

I found this article by Ross Tucker on si.com. They rated only 3 teams having the best offseason and our beloved falcons are one of them (eagles, pats are the other two)

“ATLANTA FALCONS”

“The Good … The Falcons stayed the course under the direction of head coach Mike Smith and general manager Thomas Dimitroff. That duo made fewer moves this offseason because less was needed coming off an 11-5 season in which every key acquisition appeared to pay dividends. The moves they did make were solid if not spectacular and the intensity of the offseason practices indicated this is not a franchise interested in resting on last season’s achievements.

Tony Gonzalez is still an elite talent at tight end who will make second-year quarterback Matt Ryan even better. Getting Gonzalez’s services for this season without having to give up anything until next season makes the move even better. Mike Peterson is a favorite of Smith’s and should join Curtis Lofton to give the Falcons an improved linebacking corps. Atlanta supplemented its veteran pick-ups by drafting a rolling bucket of butcher knives in defensive tackle Peria Jerry. Safety William Moore is a physical phenom who may play right away and defensive end Lawrence Sidbury was a dominant pass-rusher for the FCS Richmond Spiders and might help out on the other side of John Abraham immediately.

But … The Falcons still lack both quality and depth in the secondary and losing cornerback Domonique Foxworth didn’t help. The interior defensive line is still young and undersized and there is nobody other than Abraham who has proven they can get to the quarterback. The loss of Keith Brooking and Lawyer Milloy leaves a hole in the locker room Smith hopes Peterson can help fill.”

I disagree with the “lack of quality and depth in our secondary”. Ross also did not mention the increased speed we have now and returning players from IR. I think this defense is going to surprise allot of people. From practicing against our top 5 O, to having good coaches, we should have a top 10 D.

I'm back...

JJ-Excellent analysis. We have only 2 positions that are lacking in depth, and they are (1) a backup pass catcthing TE and (2) a backup FB. MBL CLofton has worked extremely hard this off season at increasing his strength, speed and quickness by reducing both his weight and his body fat. OLB MPeterson adds speed and striking power to our LB group. OLB SNicholas will be an upgrade over MBoley just by the fact he’s proven to be a good fit in our DEF system, which Boley obviously wasn’t.

In CB DFoxworth, we lose experience, polish and outstanding technique, which served hIM and the DEF well, since we didn’t have much of a pass rush. With either CJackson, BGrimes, COwens or RMiddleton replacing him, we lose the experience, and some of the polish and technique, but we gain more speed and quickness, which will be an asset and possible neutralize his loss now that we’ll have a solid pass rush. Also, we cannot underestimate the impact of having a SS that can cover at least half the field backing up our CB’s in pass DEF.

In just one off season, we’ve gone from starting a past his prime one dimensional SS, that struggled with pass DEF, to 5 young safeties versatile enough to effectifely play both safety positions, with one, Al Harris, being athletic enough to play CB as well. Last yr we basically had a one man pass rush(DE JAbraham). This yr, we’ll have at least 2 DE’s that will serve as pass rushing specialist(KBiermann & LSidbury). We also had only one DT that was capable of generating an inside pass rush(JBabineaux). This off season, we’ve added at least 3 more in TLewis, PJerry and VWalker.

I DON’T THINK THERE’S EVER BEEN A FALCONS DEF THAT HAD A COMBINATION OF SPEED, QUICKNESS, ATHLETICISM AND DEPTH TO EQUAL THIS YRS DEF. WE HAVE SO MUCH YOUNG TALENT AND DEPTH, ESPECIALLY ON DEF, WE COULD END UP CUTTING PLAYERS DURING TRAINING CAMP, THAT COULD END UP AS STARTERS FOR OTHER TEAMS.

Falcon21, no need to apologize, its not that serious. You have been in the cage for a while, trust me Sarah is glad you came to her defense, I am too, even though there was no need. Thats pretty much how the cage works, we talk mostly Falcons but we will defend our brethren or sister when the need arises. Look at Ken Strickland, probably the most unconfrontational person in the cage, but if you hit a button he will fire back, not with hate or vile, but with the truth. I argued back and forth with Unca’Bob about a week ago, got kind of heated at times, but in the end we were arguing about the same team, a team we all want to see succeed and thats what makes the bird cage special. I can’t go on forever because I’m not talking football, but I do want to leave you with a good example: Jason is a faithful member of the cage, Jason is also someone who is going through some issues that none of us want to ever face, so what do I do, I jump on his beloved Bulldogs, why, because for one moment in time he gets to fire off on my Jackets and even though he might not need it, he gets to go into a different world, a world where there are no limits and in the end you can still be friends because you share a common bond. To top it off I hear some of the things his family is facing and I realize that life is not all that bad for me, I refocus and think about what is going well in my life without focusing on whats not. Thats why I messed with Sarah, when you understand people you understand that this is a place of release and ultimately a place where someone can find comfort and sometimes in that place of comfort someone makes you face something that is on your mind, you have a laugh and it doesn’t bother you quite as much. Thats what makes sports so great, you can have the toughest week and when your favorite team wins, it gets you going and you start a new week fresh and ready to take on the world. Bad part about it is when you have a bad week and your team loses, but you gotta figure thats why beer is so famous around game time.

falcon21, I caught Tony G. on Rome as well. He said 2 things that really caught my attention. First, he said that he doesn’t think he’ll get double team’d because of Roddy, Jenkins and H. Douglas. The other thing he said was during OTA’s, that he’s noticed this team doesn’t have any “me” players (ie. Hall, ochoknucklehead). We’ve all known this for some time, but it’s nice when an outsider comes in and reaffirm what we’ve been saying for months! We finally have a TEAM in the big ATL!

I bet other teams defensive coordinators (especially in the nfc south) are wondering the same thing: who do we double? Pick your poison!
