Second-year man Curtis Lofton calling signals in the defensive huddle at mini-camp. (CURTIS COMPTON/AJC).
OTAVILLE – Took a little post-draft, post-mini-camp break.
Back up and ready to roll through the Organized Team Activities, then there will be another break for us before training camp.
The Falcons start their OTAs tomorrow at 10:15 a.m.
They are allowed to have 14 sessions, which are to be non-contact drills and can last no longer than six hours. Only two of those hours can be spent on the field.
While the drills are to be non-contact, seven-on-seven passing drills are allowable. The drills are not mandatory, so it’s always an issue when a veteran or two doesn’t show up.
The Falcons were near 100 percent last season. Which makes sense with a new coaching staff. This year it will be interesting to see if any of the veterans elect to miss a few of the sessions.
The Falcons will practice again on Thursday.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank welcomes rookie safety William Moore. OTAs will be important for Moore in his quest to land a starting spot. (CURTIS COMPTON/AJC).
After this week, they will practice on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday over the next four weeks to get all of their 14 sessions end. After OTAs are completed on June 18, the team will break for the summer and reunite on July 31 for the opening of training camp.
The media will be allowed to attend five of the sessions, with each Wednesday has been designated by Coach Mike Smith as the media days.
With so many young players on the roster, the Falcons OTA sessions will be key.
On defense, seven of the 11 starters could be players with three years or less. The offense could have three starters.
Also, cornerback Von Hutchins, who broke his foot and spent last season on injured reserve, is expected to be available. First round draft pick Peria Jerry, who suffered a mild right knee sprain at mini-camp, is expected back.
Considering the youth of the Falcons team, how key are the OTA session for the Falcons? How much time should be used in the seven-on-seven drills to sharpen the passing attack? Do you expect all of the veterans to take part some or all of this non-mandatory workouts?

I was kind of torn here. I like both. I don’t know if Brown can rely on return specialist this year. Brown will step up and pass protect. He’s also good reciever out the back field. Brown is injury prone though, and also a bit undersized.
Snelling is well liked it seems by both players and coaching staff. He is more of a bruiser. Decent reciever out of the backfield. On the minus side. He looks stiff. Doesn’t seem to have good vision. kind of hesitant picking a lane to run through. Seems to play more like a FB.
Now, if ATL was to carry 2 FBs, then they both could make the team. To do that, you would have to drop a OL, or TE. Can ATL do that?

Great Evening Bird-Cage Fellas and Gals! Took a little break from the ‘Cage to play a little Madden, drink a few brews, and cook some pork chops for me and the CEO. About to hit the rack to get some shut-eye for a big weekend of new recipes, good weather, great brews, and of course posting in the Bird-Cage. Gonna try the game called Bocce Ball. Don’t know much about it, but I’ve heard its a fun lawn game. To our ‘Birds and ‘Ball……….
Gonna wait for Falcons OFF vs Panthers DEF until tomorrow (you guys know how I like to stretch it out).
Roster Spot Analysis – RB#1
Michael Turner
2008 Stats; Pro-Bowl, Second Leading Rusher in NFL;
1699 Rush Yds, 17 TDs, 4.5 Yds per Attempt; 6 Rec – 41 yards
Pros
Pro-Bowl Running Back; Tough, hard-nosed runner; excellent burst and speed. Great moves and excellent ability for Yards AFter Contact. Refuses to go down. Carries team on shoulders. Sets tone for entire game. Can run between tackles, as well as getting the corner. Durable with excellent vision. Great center of gravity and rarely goes down on first hit. Runs tough behind pads and well-built frame. Delivers the hit to defender. Team leader, captain, and excellent teammate. At the peak of his career. One of the best Running Backs in the league. Fresh legs after playing secondary backup role entire career in San Diego.
Cons
Tip-toes to the lines many times. Easily taken down in the backfield often. Needs head of steam to hit to the hole and be effective. Boom or bust in games; mostly booms, but bad days turn into terrible outings. Can disappear in certain games. Durability concerns if carries per year continue near the 400 range. Absolutely no threat as a receiver coming out of the backfield, caught only 6 receptions for 41 yards entire season.
Final: Hard to argue with Pro-Bowl, 2nd leading rusher in league. Needs to become more two-dimensional in catching the ball. Hopefully will have carries reduced some. Must get better at hitting hole quick and hard Everytime. Addition of Tony Gonzalez should soften defensive approaches even more this year.
Chance of making Falcons roster: 100%, looks to improve on Pro-Bowl first year starter status.
Alright ‘Cagers, have a good night and get ready for a good day of blogging as we get ready for a good weekend. And on that note………

Just a question thrown out there. I don’t see where ATL would keep both. I think it’s. Brown can do multiple things.Snelling seemed more one dimensional. One more thing about Brown. He is strong for his size. benches something like 400 lbs.

Atlanta Falcons vs Carolina Panthers – Game #2
Atlanta OFF vs Carolina DEF
LT-Sam Baker vs RDE-Tyler Brayton/Everette Brown
LG-Justin Blaylock vs RDT-Maake Kemeouta
C-Todd McClure vs MLB-Jon Beason
RG-Harvey Dahl vs LDT-Damione Lewis
RT-Tyson Clabo vs LDE-Julius Peppers
TE-Tony Gonzalez vs SLB-Thomas Davis
RB-Michael Turner vs WLB-Na’ill Diggs
FB-Ovie Mughelli vs SS-Chris Harris
WR-Roddy White vs CB-Chris Gamble
WR-Michael Jenkins vs CB-Sherrod Martin?
QB-Matty Ice vs FS-Charles Godfrey
Running Game
Carolina’s vaunted Defense seems to have taken a little bit of a slide in recent years. Gone is one of the best D-Line’s in all of Football. Peppers is miserable, Jenkins and Mike Rucker are gone. Tyler Brayont showed some toughness getting 4.5 sacks last year, but still not on the lever they were accustomed to. They have a stud MLB in Jon Beason, and athletic OLB Thomas Davis. Nai’ll Diggs has definitely last a step or two. Panthers look to have less of a Run Defense than the Dolphins. Maturation of our line with another year under Boudreau should handle this D-Line pretty well, especially with Peppers situation. Baker should at least contain Peppers, who usually disappears in the Terror-Dome. Everette Brown shouldn’t pose a problem at DE or OLB as a rookie(there’s gotta be a reason the dude dropped from likely top 10 to mid-second rounder). If Mughelli and McClure can get to Beason, and if Turner and Norwood can handle Thomas Davis, this should be a great day running the football, especially with TG at TE softening the middle and LB Corps. TG will easily handle Davis and Diggs in blocking assignments. Turner well over 100 yards, Norwood adds another 60.
Passing Game
Chris Gamble is still their money lockdown CB, but beyond that, the DEF secondary doesn’t strike fear in that many opponents, especially with our arsenal. Ken Lucas is gone. Chris Harris and Charles Godfrey may be servicable, but there certainly not All-Pro studs. Roddy may have trouble with Gamble, but everyone else will have a field day in this one. Look for Michael Jenkins and/or HD to combine for over 100 yards in this, particularly HD in the slot. Jenks will easily handle whoever starts at CB, maybe rookie Sherrod Martin(played S in college). Jerious Norwood will have one heck of a day against the Panthers. Over 60 yds rushing and 50 yards receiving out of the backfield. And we always save the best for last: TG will absolutely dominate this LB/S corps. Davis, Diggs, Harris, and Godfrey don’t stand a chance. Expect a HUGE day from TG, 70 yards, 2 TDs. One of the leagues best Offenses just keeps getting better.
Final: This rivalry is always close and I expect no different from this one. Look for the Panthers to keep it close and maybe even pull ahead at times in this one, but our OFF is just too much for their DEF. Look for Delhomme to be on target early on, but our new look DT rotation and way more athletic secondary settle down and shut down Jake.
Final: 31 – 20; (2 – 0)

D3,
Special Teams for the Falcons will shine, in particular the Punt side. M Koenen has hang time in spades. Hopefully we can keep Carolina pinned to their own goal line and make them sustain long drives. If that is the case Carolina will not score a lot. S Smith is, well, S Smith. He is going to get some catches but I think he will mostly contained, YAC.
All this is based on the lack of turnovers, which Atlanta has got to improve on. No one in the NFL can win coughin’ up the ball.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — When William Moore needs a boost of energy or a shot of inspiration he looks to his wristband, sock, or another piece of equipment that he’s marked with the No. 25.
That’s the number of a friend and teammate, Aaron O’Neal, who died in July 2005.
“Whenever I feel like I can’t go the extra step, I think about Aaron and what he put on the line,” the Falcons safety said.
The rookie has only worn the number to honor his friend once. But well before the Falcons drafted him he planned on using the jersey in the NFL. That opportunity will come sooner rather than later.
Cornerback Von Hutchins will give Moore No. 25 in exchange for a donation to the Lupus Foundation of America. Hutchins’ mother has lupus, and the six-year veteran supports the Georgia chapter of the foundation.
He said he’s happy to help the rookie carry the memory a teammate, adding he has worn four different numbers since high school and isn’t attached to No. 25.
“It will be a great opportunity for both of us to do something that’s special to both of our hearts,” he said.
Moore and O’Neal redshirted as freshmen and spent practices together on the scout team. They relished the opportunity to get the offense ready for the next game and dreamed about their coming time in the spotlight.
“We used to try to disrupt the offense and give them a great look every game,” Moore said. ” He was so competitive; we clicked from day one… He talked so much about how he wanted to be a Tiger. He grew up with Missouri football. He could not wait to play.”
Missouri honored O’Neal through what would have been his four-year career.
The No. 25 was not issued to any player during that span, though seniors took turns wearing it last season. Moore got the jersey on Senior Day. The contents of O’Neal’s locker were also left undisturbed for the past four years.
At the Tigers’ spring game, the university presented items the team used to honor their teammate to O’Neal’s family, including pictures that hung in the locker room. At the same time Moore made his intentions known to the family.
“Aaron is always with me on the field,” he said.
The hard-hitting safety found ways to remember O’Neal through college, saying he often thought of his friend during tough times on the practice field.
He finished with a record-breaking career, leaving Missouri as the school’s all-time leader in interceptions returned for touchdowns (11). His 284 career tackles rank fourth all-time among Tiger defensive backs.
Moore admits he was nervous about asking Hutchins for the number, but is happy he can honor a friend and support a noble cause.
“I would have done that anyway,” he said when asked about his conversation with Hucthins and the subsequent donation. ” We’re doing two good things at once.”
The switch will officially take place at Russell Falcons Training Camp, which opens Aug. 1.

In the weeks since the acquisition of tight end Tony Gonzalez members of the AF.com team have spent time debating what exactly the Pro Bowl tight end will do for the Falcons offense.
In a word… Plenty.
Of course, most people tend to focus on what the addition of Gonzalez will do for Matt Ryan’s passing numbers and Michael Turner’s running lanes. I contend he’ll have an equally great effect on the game of a various wide receivers.
Especially Harry Douglas.
Douglas caught 23 passes for 320 yards and a touchdown in his rookie season. He was drafted to work out of the slot and his speed and route running did not go unnoticed. If Gonzalez can pull a safety or a linebacker out of the middle of the field, Douglas can have more room to manuever.
The Georgia native is just happy the tight end is on the roster.
“Having Tony here is a great deal,” Douglas said. “His play speaks for itself. Multiple Pro Bowls… It’s great to add him here. He can play receiver and tight end. I’m thankful to have him here, too.”
r dawg,
How’s that.

Hello crew, take a litte time away from the cage and you come back to rib eyes, and prime ribs. I’m behind a bit so I will get in my Pittsburgh predictions which shouldn’t be hard. Sarah is there a such thing as a girl beer, maybe Mich Ultra which is the equivalent to drinking a St.Pauli girl and you have already passed on the Ultra so its all good. Besides anytime your throwing back a six pack of any kind of beer your ready for a good time.
Special note to all: never drive to a beach at night unless you know exactly where your going. I arrived in Litchfield last night and I almost departed in Litchfield last night trying to find a secluded area. Some of the roads by this beach run directly into the ocean without any kind of breaker or barrier, it got strangely darker than normal which is when I realized that, that strange darkness was the ocean. Now this is a weird transition but on to my predictions.

Pittsburgh Steelers, cream of the crop, this team was already good and then they add Evander Hood who is an excellent DT and he doesn’t have to come in and make a immediate impact, if he does that’s just an added bonus. Last year everyone considered the OL to be the weakness of the team but I can’t remember the last time a weak OL paved the way for an eventual superbowl champion.

Unca’Bob, for one of the few times I disagree with you, what does the blood letting accomplish. The man committed a crime, he was punished and his punishment is almost over which means he has done his time. Blank has made it perfectly clear that he will not play for the Falcons again. The team is headed in a new and hopefully better direction so why go back and visit a horrible past. One minute we’re talking about how good the Falcons can be, the next we want them to have to relive the mess that transpired after the allegations and eventual conviction of the face of the franchise. Forgiving is forgetting, yes you remain aware of the past but in order to move on you forget it, people who fail to forget the past fail. Show me one QB or Corner that has failed to forget the past and I will show you a player who is not successful. Show me a professional in any kind of business who fails to forget the past and I will show you an unsucccessful professional. As the saying goes you take your wins with your loses whether playing sports or in life in general the ones who preform best in these scenarios are the most successful members of society, the ones who struggle are the same ones who continue to focus on bringing everyone else down to their level. Thats the biggest problem in the south, people fail to understand forgiving and forgetting, encouraging blood letting is good for those who like carnage. People who condone blood letting are the same ones who are okay with giving certain ethnic and racial groups one month out of a 12 month calendar year to be talked about.

Unca’Bob I was more upset with the fact that my post got deleted, and all that post said was for members of the birdcage to stay put where we were until a better topic comes along, basically stay away from whats going to be a hate bashing session.
