Gonzalez shines as minicamp closes

FLOWERY BRANCH – The one lasting impression of the Falcons minicamp, was seeing Tony Gonzalez whizzing around the field like a youngster.

He appeared to catch everything thrown his way. On Sunday, he drove out to tip a pass that was too far in front of him. While falling to the ground, he caught the ball.

Offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey had him run a couple of vertical routes and it doesn’t look like the 33-year-old has lost a step. (Wonder if the Hawks have called the Falcons to see if he can suit up for Game 4 on Monday. Gonzalez also played hoops at California and went to the Sweet 16 with Jason Kidd and the crew back in the day.)

“He’s everything that I’ve seen for the last nine or 10 years,” Falcons head coach Mike Smith

Michael "Stats" Wallin, 38, of Dawsonville, was excited to see new tight end Tony Gonzalez. (CURTIS COMPTON/AJC.)

said. “He’s the prototypical tight end. He can block. He can catch. He can run after the catch. He’s just a guy who’s going to make everybody on this team, offense and defense, better.

KICKING IT WITH THE BVG: Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder is still the loudest coach on the field.

He’s got perhaps the toughest job, but has tons of help from his assistants and Smith. Molding at least five new starters into the unit is going something we’ll keep tabs on.

BVG thinks he has enough veterans to blend in some of the young talent.

John Abraham did not practice during mini-camp. The Falcons would not say if he a surgery or medical procedure. (CURTIS COMPTON/AJC)

He cited Erik Coleman, Michael Peterson, John Abraham and Chauncey Davis.

“We’ve got enough veteran leadership that can work out to be a great blend with the young players,” VanGorder said. “With young players . . . right now it’s kind of crucial to allow them to get comfortable.”

COMPETITION: Smith said don’t put too much stock into how the unit lined up in mini-camp. There will be plenty of competition for those starting spots. First round pick Peria Jerry could push Lewis. Chris Owens could push Grimes and William Moore could push DeCoud.

“They are competing for playing time,” VanGorder said. “That playing time could come in a lot of different forms. That doesn’t mean, just as a starter. Certainly a lot of guys are battling for starting positions. Some guys are trying to earn spots on the roster. Some guys are trying to get into the two-deep so that they can gain reps. There are a lot of dynamics involved in that.”

NO MATTER HOW IT GOES DOWN, THE DEFENSE WILL BE YOUNG: “We’re going to be young,

Trey Lews (97) had a minor scare on his first day back after two knee surgeries. He spent last season on injuried reserve. (CURTIS COMPTON/AJC)

but I still think we’ve got a good mixture,” VanGorder said. “We have a number of guys going into their third year. We played with some rookies last year, who gained some valuable experience and should improve this year.
We’ve got a good formula set up.”

MULARKEY ON THE OFFENSE: Mularkey knows that with Gonazlez on board, teams will have trouble keying on one player.

There were games last season, when teams could sellout on stopping Michael Turner or Roddy White and shut the offense down.

“It will be hard to beat down on one guy with Tony in there,” Mularkey said. “It should help the run game with him in there.”

The theme for the offense is “Get Better.”

“We want to get better, everywhere,” Mularkey said.

THE ROOKIES: Made it a point to meet all of the rookie draft choices. Real nice and intelligent group. The Garrett Reynolds kid is huge. He’s the second biggest lineman next to Tyson Clabo. Was worried about the cornerbacks — Chris Owens and William Middleton — being to small. But one Falcon scout told me “as long as they can play.” And warned not to get caught up on their height. William Moore looks like a stud, now it will just be a matter of how fast will he pick up the defense.

Well, now that mini-camp is over, did you get your football fix? Learn anything new about the rookies? Worried about the defense still? Excited about the offense?

row3, That’s probably why I forgot him. lol I wanted to put Jamaal Lewis instead. Hey, I asked a question the other day about ATL’s OL. Give me 3 opinions. One on what you thought going into last season. 2) what you thought by then of last season. #3 What do you think going into this season. Are the good, servicable, or a liability?

row3, I have alot of thoughts or opinions concerning ATL. Not just this year, but throughout their history. Like for instance. Why has Atlanta consistently avoided drafting UGA players; or even GT players. I know it seems like they have made an effort here recently with DJ, Thomas, and even Brooking from GT. They also brought in Tony Taylor, and Brandon Miller. The reason I ask is back when Tony Dungy rebuilt the Bucs; he did so by using alot in in state(FL) talent. I’m not saying the whole team should be nothing but UGA/GT players… Just ATL has been bad enough to where we could have gotten a Seymour to soildify the DL, Thomas Brown to play Safety, A stroud, Fergurson. UGA was so strong on the defensive side in the Donnan years as far as pro talent. I can’t really speak for GT; I don’t follow them at all.

Jason,
Regarding the OL, going into the season, I didn’t really know what to expect. If you listened to the media then we were in a world of hurt. I remember lots of folks saying that even if Mattie Ice was ready that we should hold him out for at least the first 4-5 games until the OL could be evaluated. But you’ve got to give them thier props. The coaching staff, I think, knew what they had and had faith in the offensive unit. That’s huge. That stuff translates to the players having faith in themselves and they proved it on the field.
The the end of last season, I thought the OL had a bunch of BAs that liked to impose their wills on the opposing team, had a mean streak. Did you happen to notice how many times the Burner scored it was the OL celebrating in the end zone with him. They knew they were a big part of that and success breeds success.
This year in think we are only going to be better. The entire unit is in tact, Reynolds looks like he is a beast, the guys huge, and we are building good, quality depth. I am syched. This year is going to provide a lot of reasons to revel in being a Falcon Fan. Two consecutive winning seasons and another playoff appearance are IMO a done deal. Go Falcons . . .

Jimbo, Agreed. The report coming out in all those preseason mags was that the ATL ol, was perhaps the worst in the entire NFL. Worse than, CLE, DET, BAD. I was impressed with the way the gelled from the get go. ATL had one starter, the Center McClure. remember Blalock was benched by Petrino. And the T weiner was hurt. ATL’s OL was built on FAs who were at best back ups for other teams. I know alot of love and respect gfoes out to the OL coach. But you have to give the players their due. To be able to come together and gell so quickly. The main way the salary cap hurts a NFL team is at the OL. You have to have continuity at those 5 spots. For our OL to learn a new offense, new technique in blocking. to do all that and gell so quickly… Just tremendous.

Jason brought up some thought provoking questions regarding the OL. I see parallels with our DL this year. We don’t really know what we have, so what are you opinions about the DL line going into the season? Good, serviceable or a liability? How often do you see use using a 3-4 scheme? What are your predictions about the starters or does it really matter because we will have a good rotation? Inquiring minds want to know…

Jimbo, sorry I had a long post for you to read on my opinion of the DL, and OLB in different formations. The 4-3, 3-4, and Nickel. Damn blog monster, lost all of it. Bear with me and I will repost.

Jimbo, in regards to your question on the DL. The DL was in a little better shape to begin last year. Yes while ATL cut half their D, there was some foundation pieces leftover. First let’s take alook at the 4-3. The base Defense. RE) Abraham DT) Babineaux NT) Lewis LE) Anderson.
OLB) Nicolas MLB) Lofton OLB)Peterson. With the base 4-3 you have the ability to play great run defense. Rotation with good players offsets fatigue. It also allows younger p;ayers to gaet expirence. Lets look at the second team. RE) Biermann DT) Andersaon NT) Jerry LE) Davis. OLB) Wire MLB) Peterson OLB) Gilbert/ Biermann/ Sidbury.

Jimbo, posting each formation seperately. The 3-4 allows for many, mant possibilities regarding scheme and player personell. Take a look at the base 3-4. RE)Abraham NT)Lewis LE)Anderson olb) Nicolas ILB) Lofton ILB) Peterson OLB) Wire. If you look at personel, you could place Biermann at OLB for Nicolas. Anderson could play the NT for Lewis and Davis slides in the end.

The fun is in the nickel package. You can line OLBs at end. You could put ends at OLB. Depends on coverage like Zone Blitz, man cover, tampa two,or all out blitz. In the end, Players will be rotated. The ends, I see at least 5 in a sound rotation. The DTs 4, and I’ll say 5 with Anderson playing all along the line. LB, I see 5 right now. If they rotate the young ends to OLB in the 3-4 I see 7 with Biermann and Sidbury. This Defense is really young. The rotation to keep players fresh will be vital. You learn more when you are fresh. Mental lapses are the first sign of fatigue. The young players will also gain alot of expirence.

Jason,Excellent posts. I guess what I am trying to get a feel for is where do the folks in the Bird Cage feel we are with the DL. I think that we have improved the DL greatly with the addition of Lewis and I see him being a starter this year, maybe not week 1 but definitely this year.
I think with the pressure and inside push he will give us, we’ll be seeing the turnover ration increasing and once we get the lead just pound away with Turner and control the clock. Man, I’m excited, September can’t get here fast enough.

Great Saturday Afternoon Bird-Cage Bro’s and Sis’s! Wow, stayed up LATE last night with my little bugger. It’s amazing how they’ll sleep when they’re being held, but the mili-second they’re put in the crib……AWAKE!!! Anyway, back to the blog. Weekend’s seem to be hit or miss. The draft weekend obviously torched it out, but random down weekends such as this are probably a little slower. To Falcons & Football………

Dean21 – great posts my brother. I know, a serious accomplishment of making it to a Page 6, maybe page 7 before the weekend’s out. I’m all for meeting up at the ‘Branch sometimes during Training Camp. I wanted desperately to make it up there for the mini-camp, but couldn’t make it. I’m curious to see exactly who all lives in the Metro ATL. I know me, I’m assuming you, Sarah B, Lil’ Dave, and maybe JJ? Not really sure because I know many of our brethren are scattered throughout the country AND the globe. Thanks for the props brother. I just enjoy the ‘Cage so much that I just try to get creative on keeping the Mojo going here in the ‘Cage.

Cutter & Jimbo – I definitely concur with row3 in thanking you for the Football news updates. DOL’s usually in the ball, but I think he’s drinking a Daquiri on the beach of St.Thomas.

jason – what’s up my brother from the Southewest(is that correct)? Yeah, I’m really looking forward to our DEF this year. Last year it was our OFF, but this year our DEF will be heavily underrated through the Football Media, opponents, etc. We’ve lost “experience” through FA, but experience sure as the H— didn’t help us in the playoffs when Big Grady got doubled out of the building, Milloy got torched TWICE, and Brooking’s infamous play. Younger, faster, stronger, hungrier. Overall a more fierce DEF can be expected. You’ve been lucky as all get out: red & black all the way from high school, college, and pro’s…nice.

Unca’ Bob – love the food-bag expression. Classic.

Mike – glad to have you in the ‘Cage brother. Lofton was a fairly overlooked stud, because MLB’s usually don’t get the stats that OLB do. He was rock-solid from Day 1. We are set at CB with Houston, C.Jackson, C.Owens, V.Hutchins, B.Grimes, & W.Middleton. I bet that we carry 6 CB’s this year and only 4 safeties. Last year we carried 5 safeties and 5 CB’s. The Moore/DeCoud battle for SS looks to be the most fierce of August. At CB, Von Hutchins is the X-Factor. Houston is all but a lock at a starting spot. Based on his performance in the nickel as a rookie, I would put my money on Chevis Jackson taking the other spot. Chris Owens having that much upside and hearing TD rave about him, methinks he takes the nickel, leaving Hutchins as the 4th option. We’ll see.

row3 – whew, hate the hangover for you brother. I was there at about 5 AM, think I had a one few too many brewski’s last night. Hey, its saturday, and the best thing about working on sat., is coming home and chilling the F— out when you get to the house.

Jimbo – great point on our OL. I forgot about us signing Will Svitek who started for the Chiefs and Brett Romberg who started for the Rams. If we carry 9 OL again, look for the following: Sam Baker, Justin Blaylock, Todd McClure, Harvey Dahl, Tyson Clabo, Brett Romberg, Will Sviteck, Garret Reynolds, & there will be a serious fight for the final spot spot between Quinn Ojinnaka, Renardo Foster, Alex Stepanovich, and Ben Wilkerson. Offensive Line finally looks to have some quality and depth. Sure, just post the rest of the AFC West whenever you get a chance.

Great convo’s here on the weekend, even if its just a few of us kicking it around. Hey, its not about quantity, but about quality. Mucho, mucho more to come later.

D3, Man, I’ve been there on getting the lil bambino to sleep! lol
It’s a task that becomes a skill and once you master it, you will be able to blog all night, not that you would want to…
I figured you will have plenty of time to practice. I’m actually from Atl, but grew up in Cali also..now I live in the burbs, but work in Buckhead, so i’ve experienced it during my times of living in the city.
D3, how does the schedule look for next week? I know we have a lot to discuss, just need to get my mind ready! By the way, like Sarah B. stated, we can choose a day with the majority in mind and hit the “Branch” with Bird Cage Fever! We will have our on little section at the “Branch”. I’m about 45 minutes outside of the Atl and I have not seem a drop of rain at the moment, although I’m sure it will come soon enough. What topics can we address this weekend? I would like an update on our injured players returning this year, obviously this will play an important roll on who makes our 53 man roster!

Jimbo, Like someone said earlier(Iforget who)in the week. You are going to see alot more turnovers this year. Mainly ints. With the pressure by the DTs, and Abraham alot of passes will be coming out quick. Lots of oppurtunities tgere for the picking. Trey Lewis is like FA pick up in that he didn’t play at all last year in Coch Smitty’s Defense. We drafted Jerry, and Walker, And basiclly added Lewis to go along with Babineaux.

D3, hey what you said about carrying 6 CBs/ $ safties makes sense if you an others are right about DcCoud being able to play both well. Moore the starter with Coleman. DcCoud backing up both positions. CB is going to be interesting. I think at this point Competition is wide open. I don’t either starting position is penciled in. I think you work it like this.Houston and Hutcins as starters. Grimes and Middleton backing them up. Then you Jackson and Owens in the nickel. I wouldn’t be susprised to see Owens land a starter’s spot based on TDs evaluationg of him. I think Jackson is firmly locked into the nickel. Physical CB wh can play the slot and fight through the traffic. I am worried about his lack of speed on the outside. If he starts , he will have to have Safety help over the top. Just a thought. Bird Cage keep the hits coming. I want to go page 7 before the evening is over.

Where was I ? Yeah, Dean 21, The 3-4. Yeah I think they will show it. The 4-3 will be the base defense. I think Coach Smitty will show the 3-4 to cause confusion and create mismatches for our boys. You asked about LBs. Lets just say Peterson and Lofton in the middle. Outside, it would depend on what you want to do. ATL has those 2 young kids that are like tweeners, Sidbury and Biermann. Then I wouldn’t be susprised to Abraham line up at OLB from time to time. Not a regular thing; just a New wrinkle. Nicolas and Wire depending on coverage, run stopping, or blitzing. I think the nickel package will be similar. These two formations offer unlimited options as far player personel groupings, schemes and such. The good thing is ATL has the players to do this.

When I had to step away and try to get some work done, ya’ll were talking about the OL. I noticed the biggest improvement was at the guard position, J Blaylock really turned the corner in his sophmore season, he’s solid. H Dahl (Mr Nasty) might be one of this new staffs most overlooked pick-ups, seems like San Diego was trying to move him to their practice squad and we grabbed him off waivers, another example of TD finding talent where ever it becomes available. I also think Hamilton is one of best OL coaches in the NFL.

jason

May 16th, 2009
5:17 pm

row3, My thought is that the difference in making a NFL roster and the practice team is minute. I don’t think the question is about talent. I think it comes down to consistently performing, whether in practice or game time. I truly look at Dahl, and all the other FA OL ATL got off the Scrap heap. TD anmd Company took these guys and instilled a belief in not only what that group of OL could, but also the belief in what Coach Smitty and the OL coach could teach. That’s why ATL has one of the best OL in the NFL. I bet they are still the most underrated also.
By the way, Blalock didn’t turn a corner last year. He was already good enough to start. He just fell out of favor with the A$$ Hole Petrino.

jason

May 16th, 2009
6:22 pm

row3, I reread my post and thought I was being a little hard. I wasn’t saying anyhthing but the fact that I can’t stand Petrino. He set us back further than what Nora did. See, I liked Mora. He just wasn’t ready to be a Head Coach. Maybe he is now, who Knows. I felt like Blalock got a raw deal from what I read. Blalock is and will be a first rate powewr blocker at gaurd. Whether run or Pass.
This might be the first time in Falcon histoey that we have a Player personel as GM. TD knows what to look for; whether offense or defense. I don’t think Atlanta has ever had that before. Atlanta always drafted or signed the wrong personel. We now have a GM that understands the concept of working with the HC as well as all coaches to get the best personel on the team, and on the field.

What’s up fellow Bird Cagers? As we already know, our DEF will determine how far we go next yr. So, I took a good look at what our coaches have to work with and I came up with some interesting results.
This will basically be our backup DEF unit.
DE’s KBiermann, CDavis
DT’s TLewis, VWalker or JJefferson
LB’s RJames, TGilbert, CWire
CB’s COwens, VHutchins or BGrimes
SS WMoore
FS AHarris
To be honest, in a lot of ways, this backup DEF unit looks better than last yrs starting DEF unit, especially at DT, SS and LDE. Four of these players, BGrimes, TLewis, VHutchins & CWire were, or have been starters, while 3, COwens, MMoore & TLewis could end up earning starting positions this yr. It looks like we’re replacing a lot of last yrs stop gap FA’s we signed last yr with draft picks and younger UDFA signees. It appears Smitty is going to have the type of players he wants to make his DEF go. He only needs is to get them some experience and develop some chemistry, and we saw last yr how quickly our coaching staff can make that happen.

Ken, good to see you on tonight. I agree 100% of what you wrote. knowing that TD drafted not only talented players, but also intelligent players. The second team to the starters will be interchangable by the end of this season.

row3, the topic of interest for me is the OL. Beacuse, of what was reported at the beginning of last season. The whole , ATL has the worst Ol in the NFL. That just goes to show you just how good the overall coaching is now, and also the willingness of players working their collective a$$e$ off to get better for the benefit of the team. That’s what so special. We have a TEAM to root for now. Not a bunch of individual players.

2 Tuesday 19-May QB 2
3 Wednesday 20-May QB 3
4 Thursday 21-May RB 1
5 Friday 22-May RB 2

We can analyze the following:
-a review from last year’s performance
-areas of strength/areas to improve
-likely role/outlook for 2009
-what needs to happen for this player to be successful
-anything else

Do we want to analyze Falcons opponents week-by-week, because we’re not seeing a whole lot of Atlanta-Miami analysis. Thoughts?

More to come later……….

Ken Strickland,

Inciteful as always. I’ve read over your backup DEF and I’m going on an assumption with E Coleman and T DeCoud being the starters. With W Moore and A Harris as backup, where does that leave D Irons and J Fudge?

I looked at ATL’s depth chart. On defense, ATL looks good. Just a little inexpirenced. Definitely faster.
DE)Abraham DT) Babineaux NT) Lewis DE)Anderson
Biermann Jefferson Jerry Davis
Sidbury Anderson Walker Sidbury
OLB)Nicolas MLB)Lofton OLB)Peterson
Wire Peterson James
Biermann Gilbert Bobino
CB)Owens FS) Moore SS) Coleman CB)Houston
Hutchins DcCoud DcCoud Grimes
Middleton Harris Fudge Jackson
I have Jackson as my Nickel back. I like Jackson, but am concerned about his speed. Jackson is a ball mgnet though. Also, I like him in the nickel because he is a physical CB. He has enough strength to fight through traffic in the middle of the field, and stay with his man.

Co-sign that. I see Jackson as the Nickel back, too.

UNCA BOB-it’s hard to say where it leaves them considering the influx of talent we got at their positions this yr. The fact that last yrs backup CB RPrude and FS MPaschal were cut recently tells me CB’s CHouston, VHutchins, BGrimes, COwens and CJackson and FS/SS’s EColeman, WMoore, AHarris and JFudge are locks, barring a trade. With the talent and competition we’re going to have in camp this season, even our practice squad will be talented.

ROW3-Whether CB Middleton makes the team is up to him. If he does he’ll certainly earn it because there will be some serious competition at CB.

JASON-having a poor OL isn’t always indicative of the talent of the individual players on that OL and that was true of the Atlanta Falcons OL. When the comment about our OL being one of the worst was made, it was true. Under RPetrino, our OLinemen had to go from JMora’s cut blocking system, which relied on finesse, speed, quickness, agility and lighter weight, to a power drive blocking system that required size and brute strength, which requires completely opposite attributes and abilities. A transition of that magnitude would have made any teams OL perform poorly. The OFF system used by Smitty was QB and OL friendly. In fact, the last Falcons HC that even tried to use play action, especially as effectively and consistently as Smitty, was Dan Reeves. Play action forces the entire DEF to read run before it reacts to the pass, and that gives the OL the chance to get set, or get into the defenders before they can react. Also, it’s a whole lot harder blocking to get a fast 185lb RB past the line of scrimmage than a bigger, stronger 235lb RB that’s just as fast. Having a competent passing OFF, and a QB that’s a legitimate passing threat, makes it much easier on the OL as well.

Last yr, there was virtually no competition for the startig DT, CB, SS, OLB, or DE positions. This yr, their are openings at SS, DT, CB, SS and OLB and each position will have to be earned through fearce competition. Since Smitty and TD took over, they’ve parted ways with former Probowl OLB(KBrooking), SS(LMalloy), DT(RColeman) and CB(DHall), along with OLB MBoley, FS CCrocker and DT GJackson. This might be the yr we benefit from the DEF roster turnover.

Ken Strickland, Great anaylis as always. You are the man. Not saying that ATL’s not good. They function well as a group; a unit. I was wondering if it was scheme. Living here in Texas I only got to see them play like twice last year. I relied on the web, high lights, and articles. Hand selected group of guys placed in a system to best take advantage of their talents to have success. That doesn’t sound like TD and Smitty, does it.lol.. Take care and enjoy. I will check back in in the mornning. Good night.

Great Early Sunday A.M. Bird-Cage Boys & Gals! Love the conversations we’re rockin’ here on the weekend. The ‘Cage is alive, healthy, and on FIRE! Love it. What a great hobby: talkin’ intelligent Football with cool fans while practicing our typing skills. That was a great excuse I gave the House CEO when in the ‘Cage. The CEO has her Facebook, and I have mine: THE BIRD-CAGE! On to our Falconi’s………..

Dean21 – you are the absolute MAN! You have finally figured out the mystery of slaying the blog monster. The F5 key works like a charm. Nice. I used to refresh and it would become all jacked up.

jason – what’s up G-money? Great analysis on the 3-4. We showed a few looks similar to that last year, and Stephen Nicholas would put his hand down as an End, move J.Anderson inside to NT, Abe on the other End. The drafting of El Sid(actual former Spanish military leader, saw it on a documentary the other day) gives us a huge amount of flexibility. We now have a ton of options at OLB/DE. I went back and read a scouting report on Biermann after we drafted him. He was projected as an OLB coming out, but had a d@— fine rookie year as backup DE. I could definitely see using both Biermann and El Sid as OLB’s in a 3-4. I think I’m the only one, but I still believe that El Sid could make a transition to SAM OLB. He’s 6-2, 266, and runs under a 4.6 (Terrell Suggs – 6′3, 260). Obviously, he would have to learn pass drops and have to come out on passing downs, but don’t discount it totally. My bet for 3-4: OLB-Stephen Nicholas & El Sid, ILB’s-Curtis Lofton & Mike Peterson.

row3 – exactly right on our line coaches: Hamilton(DEF) & Boudreau(OFF), particularly Boudreau. We were expected to have the worst OL in all of football, and had the leagues second leading rusher with fairly unheard of’s, especially Dahl.

Ken Strick – where you been brother? Great to have you and you’re awesome analysis back in the ‘Cage. Good look at our backup defense and how it might shape up. What do we do with Lawrence Sidbury? You know he’ll probably make the team. I’m really intrigued by Von Hutchins this year. His contract was 4 years for $9 million, which is fairly cheap due to CB standards, but hasn’t stepped on the field since he’s been signed. You give A.Harris the nod over J.Fudge?

Unca’ Bob – I had your Raiders picks, just forgot to put them on there. Sorry about that. I believe lack of sleep finally whipped my last night.

Big Ray – what’s happenin’ brother? Took a peek over at your Hawks Hack and you rocked it out strong. Isn’t it interesting that the Falcons is the only team without a fan blog? I thought I had a lead on getting us one, and haven’t heard back since. Oh well.

jason & Big Ray – gotta depart with you on Chevis Jackson my friends. The knock of speed has always been labeled on him, but he’s proved everybody he belongs throughout his career starting every game for LSU in the SEC. What he lacks in speed, he makes up for in strength and awareness. I’m thinking that Jackson gets a strong look to win the CB job opposite Houston, allowing C.Owens the chance to work his way in gradually into NFL speed, similar to how Jackson did last year.

Cornerbacks/Safeties – looking at the 53-man active roster from last year we carried 10 Defensive Backs: 5 CB’s & 5 Safties. I’m thinking that we carry 4 safeties and 6 CB’s this year. We could say with almost certainty that Houston, Jackson, & Owens are pretty sure things to make it. That leaves Grimes, Irons, Hutchins, & Middleton to battle for 3, but maybe even two spots. Grimes is a pretty sure thing since he started half the season last year. Hutchins has potential, but is injury prone. I’m really intrigued about Middleton. TD’s 5th round pick last year, Kroy Biermann, not only made the team but contributed heavily last year. Granted we’re in a much better spot this year talent-wise, but we know TD can mine gems late.

Great stuff gentlemen. Keep it going strong and I’ll check in later. H—, I woke up excited this morning thinking it was Monday so I could delve into the AFC North, Falcon Talk, and Roster Spot Analysis.

D3, good morning sir. You may be right about Jackson. Hope so, As a UGA homer, I am also a SEC homer. They play the best collage ball against the best competition. And doesn’t hurt that he had a good year last year. I have a question on our DBs; CBs more importantly. Who all were on ATL’s roster prior to TD and Smityy coming to ATL? The reason I ask is that we all know that when a new GM/ coach comes in ; they want personel that fits their plan; their system. When you talk about Middleton; that’s why I believe he has a shot at making the team. I think alot of players will be fazed out that were not part of TDs/ Smitty’s Draft or FA signings. Unless of course you really show out and make them have to keep you.

jason – great morning to you j-man! Very interesting to watch and witness the Defensive Backfield battle this year. Looks like Coleman and Houston are pretty good bets for locks, but besides that the other 8 positions are totally up in the air. Checked out our DB’s from the Dic-trino era. The only DB holdovers are Chris Houston, David Irons, Brent Grimes, and Antoine Harris. The following have gotten their walking papers:
-Lawyer Milloy
-Meangelo Hall
-Jimmy Williams
-Lewis Sanders
-Daren Stone
-Chris Crocker
TD & Co. got rid of these characters with common themes: attitude problems(Hall, Williams), injury-prone(Lewis Sanders), and generally ineffective(Daren Stone, Chris Crocker). I really happy to have Rich McKay still on board, but some of his moves still baffle the H— out of me. We traded for Chris Crocker for godsake. David Irons is on the bubble this year. His special teams play has probably gotten him by, but I don’t think it will this year.

BTW, we should never, never, never, ever draft another player from Virginia Tech (Meangelo Hall, Jimmy Williams, & the Obvious).

D3, I think Harris is safe at safety. He has size, something Fudge is lacking. I don’t think Irons will make the cut. Middleton will beat him out. Irons is a good player, but he also has injury history. Houston will be a lock a CB. I think he will vastly improves this year. With a better all round D, getting pressure on th opposing QB. I just think the third year is a critical year for young players. By year three you either get it or you don’t. Grimes, I think is on the fence. I know that he is a popular player here in the cage. His size is definitely working against him. On the plus side is you can never underestimate heart and determination. With Grimes its going to come down to making plays consistently. That’s why I sorta agree with you about Jackson starting. Jackson and Owens are going to battle for starting CB oppisite Houston.Loser mans the Nickel. May the best player win. There is a reason TD drafted 3 DBs (2CBs). Neither he nor Coach Smitty were pleased with what they had. I look for the 3 Moore, Owens ,and Middleton to make the team. With those 3, you have Jackson, Houston, DcCoud, and Coleman. That’s 7 + Harris= * you have 2 spots left for Hutchins, Grimes, Irons,Sharpe, and Tiller. Let the competition begin.
