HOCKEYTOWN, U.S.A. — Just getting back in the groove after my trip to Detroit to check out Matthew Stafford at the Lions rookie mini-camp.
It appears the plan is to let him learn and watch.
Lions coach Jim Schwartz came over from Tennessee and saw how rushing Vince Young out on the field may have stunted his development.
He’s also studied how the then Houston Oilers handled Steve McNair with kit gloves after the 1995 draft. The Lions want to guarantee Stafford’s success and don’t want to throw him to the wolves.
Before we move onto the Falcons mini-camp, wanted to share a few impressions from the Lions mini-camp:
1. Safety Louis Delmas is a beast! He was all over the field, playing at 100 miles an hour. The Western Michigan product and the first safety taken in the draft is going to make an instant impact.
2. Defensive tackle Sammie Lee Hill from Stillman College is going to get some individual instruction. He is very raw.
3. Tight end Brandon Pettigrew didn’t look as smooth catching the ball as did at the NFL scouting combine. He’s going to be Stafford’s security blanket when Calvin Johnson is not open.
4. Also, Gerald Riggs Jr., son of the Falcons great, received a tryout. They were working him at fullback and halfback.
5. Went to my first hockey game ever! Thought it would be a good place to find some Lions fans for story on
Stafford. The atmosphere at Joe Louis was electric and I got to meet Red Wings Super Fan Mo Cheese. The Red Wings scored with 49.1 seconds to post a 3-2 victory.
6. NEW HERO — If I get into any trouble and need some muscle, I’m calling Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson. Dude dropped the gloves and dished out a swift and decisive beat down of Anaheim’s Corey Perry, after the coach told him not to start any fights.
Well, onto the Falcons mini-camp also known a CAMP SMITTY.
The Falcons will have two practices on Friday and Saturday and one on Mother’s day. Both sessions on Saturday are open to the public. The first practice on Saturday starts at 10:30 a.m. with the gates opening at 9:30 a.m. The second practice starts at 4:15 p.m. with the gates opening at 3:15 p.m.
On Mother’s Day, there is 10:30 a.m. practice so the dinner reservation will have to be around 6 or 7 p.m.
Here are a couple of things we’ll be looking out for at the mini-camp. Remember, that mini-camp depth charts don’t mean a thing. Last season, Pat McCoy was lining at first string left tackle. Smith and his staff will use this time to cross-train folks.
However, how the secondary stacks up is going to be interesting to watch. Don’t be surprised if rookie Chris Owens is lining up with the No. 1s along with defensive tackle Peria Jerry and safety William Moore.
Smitty and the staff showed last year that they are not scare to play rookies. Matt Ryan, Chevis Jackson, Sam Baker, Curtis Lofton and Harry Douglas all received major playing time. Can’t see them going much deeper beyond Owens this year.
Defensive end Lawrence Sidbury is going to be interesting to watch.
Oh yeah, tight end Tony Gonzalez will make his Falcon debut at the mini-camp.
Do you plan to attend the mini-camp? Which rookie are you more interested in watching? Are you excited to see linebacker Michael Peterson and Gonzalez in the red and black?

Through the years the uniform changes have been hit or miss. Some I definitely liked better than others. What they all had in common was, none of the previous incarnations were anywhere near as ugly as the eyesores that my beloved Falcons have to clad themselves in now.

D3, I too live in Seattle. Been here just under a year, it’s the best and most beautiful city in the nation IMO when it is sunny and I’ve lived all over. Unfortunatly it is only sunny at best 1/4th of the year so take that as you will. Mountains and ocean with sexy skyscapers in between. I gotta get down to San Diego, thats my favorite city year round.

Tight end Ben Hartsock has been cleared for mini-camp. Alex Stepanovich is out after having a back “procedure” last week. Cornerback Von Hutchins (broken foot) will be limited for mini-camp, but is expected to cleared for OTAs on May 20. (Jamaal Fudge and Glenn Sharpe have been excused for personal reasons.

long time falcon, nice info on Trey Lewis, I saw just enough of him in 07 to get real excited about his style of play, with a rotation of Babs,Mungo and a healthy Trey Lewis, I think we will be a force up the middle. I still don’t know if JA going to be under-tackle or a true DE.

If JA is going to be the player we have all dreamed of then this should be the year. With the potential improvement of the D-Line and the other teams focus on Abe, JA has no excuse if he does not perform.

LONG TIME FALCON FAN-I told someone a while back that TLewis will likely return from 16mos of rehad stronger than he was before the injury. I’m old school, so I remember the serious knee injury Chicago Bears legendary RB Gale Sayers suffered. He was determined to make it back from that injury and worked his butt off. When he returned, he was stronger and faster than he was before the injury, although a bit less elusive. DT JBabineaux could be in jeopardy of losing his starting DT position to TLewis, especially if DT PJerry lives up to expectations. PJerry is simular in style to JBabineaux only bigger, stronger and likely stronger against the run. He and TLewis could form a tandem that would be very difficult to move off the line and they can certainly collapse the pocket in passing situations.
D3-no matter who starts at LDE, there will be an improvement because of our DT upgrades. Last yr, our LDE and RDT had to cover more area to compensate for the lack of mobility, pass rushing ability, stamina, quickness and athleticism of former DT GJackson. With GJackson in the gm it was incumbent upon the LDE to provide the pass rush from the L side. With either PJerry or TLewis, there will definitely be additional pressure privided from the LDT position.
DT has been our biggest DEF weakness for the last few yrs and with the addition of PJerry and the return of TLewis, it could turnout to be our biggest strength. It appears OLB RJames is a harder hitting version of former OLB Demario Williams, who once led the team in tackles. I wonder if we’ll continue moving DE JAbraham around now that we have much better pass rushing DT’s and possibly better pass rushing from LDE.
WE’RE GOING TO BE ONE OF THE NFL’S QUICKEST AND FASTEST OFF’S AND DEF’S.

D3, my man, I’m up and running on the division analysis, I’m trying to give others a chance to post, my NFC south post and rookie of the year post is up, working on the nicknames for players but I feel its my duty to take my time on that because we might end up with names like “eye candy” or “baby daddy”. Even during the down time the blog is growing and its starting to get exciting again, funny how it takes just a little controversy and spunk to get the cage up and roaring once again. If the cage continues on its current path a ESPN ZONE meeting is definitely in the works once the season starts, or better yet a FoxSports grill hookup may be on the way.

Hey Guys,
Glad to see that the embers of Falcon passion are still being stoked during this no-football season.
I’m shooting my entry at you, D3. You are a man among men for coordinating these competitions.
Rookie of the Year:
Offense: 1) Knowshon Moreno, 2) Andre Smith, 3) Kenny Britt
Defense: 1) Aaron Curry, 2) B.J. Raji, 3) William Moore
Draft Grades:
Atlanta: A+; We all know who they got…can you ever doubt T.D.?
Tampa Bay: D; Maybe it’s just because I don’t like them at all, but the Bucs really sucked on draft day. I would have gave them an F, if not for Roy Miller.
New Orleans: C; Malcom Jenkins has the potential to be a solid CB, but they did not address their need at the RB position. Guess Drew Brees will have to throw for another 5,000 yards this year as well.
Carolina: B+; John Fox knows his stuff. He worked with a minimal amount of picks and yet still got quality players at spots of need. Watch for Brown and the Duke to be major contributors.

You know what Ken? I did not consider the tandem of Jerry/Lewis when I suggested my version of the starting defensive lineup. I mistakenly get so caught up in titles and positions, that I completely neglect scheme. long time falcon’s entry revealed that “Lewis has versatility to play nose or under tackle.” If that is the case, we may be looking at the next John Henderson and Marcus Stroud tandem.
I was doing some reading and I discovered this article about Coach Smith: “Atlanta’s head coach Mike Smith made a name for himself as the defensive coordinator in Jacksonville with a defense whose centerpieces were two large and dominant defensive tackles. Smith’s defensive tackle tandem weighed a combined 645 pounds and made it difficult for teams to run on the Jaguars. They also consumed blockers on the offensive line for the team’s athletic linebackers to make plays. Conventional wisdom says that Smith would like to recreate something like that in Atlanta, but that’s easier said than done. With the 2008 re-signing of defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux, he’s going with a more “use-what-you’ve-got” approach. Babineaux is 6′2″ and weighs 288 pounds–not small by any means, but in the world of defensive tackles he’s considered more quick than he is large. Trey Lewis will be back in the mix in 2009 and he’s more of the beefy tackle type (6′3″, 323 pounds), but Smith wouldn’t hesitate to add Hood to the rotation–there’s no such thing as too many defensive tackles in the NFL.”
Now, when you consider the versatility of Lewis and the commotion of Jerry, I think you end up with an unstoppable defensive line, with Abraham and Anderson (Anderson will certainly be better with those three). Couple that with a backup corps of Davis, Babs, Jefferson and “Sid-bury the QB”, Lord have mercy.
SPS, whoever you are, your words are so appropriate when anticipating our defensive line. I quote “…The way Smitty rotates the linemen, everyone on the roster will get plenty of snaps. Being a “starter” is just a label for those 4 positions.”
I could not have typed it better, myself.

Great Friday A.M. Bird-Cager’s! Hope everybody is doing well as we head into the weekend and our first glimpse at our 2009 ATLANTA FALCONS! The Bird-Cage is Alive and Rockin’. We got all our vets on here and its great to see all the new bloggers jumping into the ‘Cage. We welcome you and glad you’re in. And to Football……..
Lil’ Dave – sorry bro’, looks like I’m not going to be able to make it up to the ‘Branch. I’ve never been up there and I’m really p!—- I can’t make it, but I got a 1 month old future wide receiver at home. Take some good notes for us.
cutter – concerning me saying BFinn as a lock at #4, I understand where you’re coming from, but you gotta remember that wide receiver, just like cornerback, #4 on the depth chart is really a #2 on the depth chart because he will back up Roddy or Jenks at Split End or Flanker. Add to that the fact that they re-signed him to an extension and I’d say he’s pretty safe, at least for this year. You are right about Drew Bennett; couldn’t find anything about us officially signing him.
mars – gotta totally depart with you on the uni’s brother. I love the uniforms. They are that updated style of jersey, but that’s my style I guess. My favorite combo is Red Jerseys and Black Pants, and I actually love playing in All Black. Looks tough and I think we play better, at least last year at the Terror-Dome (New Orleans and Carolina, if I recall correctly).
FalconDevil – thanks for the Seattle info. I was actually planning on attending grad school at U-Dub after undergrad @ UGA, but decided to go ahead and start working. Love traveling and Seattle’s top on my list of visiting. Obviously I love the ATL, but gotta say that San Fran is the coolest city I’ve been to.
falcon21 – doing good brother. Sorry to hear about your house. If you make it up to the ‘Branch, take some good notes. Yeah, the blog has become my favorite hobby for sure. I feel you on the significant other, my HOUSE CEO is pretty cool with the blog, but she’s a football fan and I usually rock on the blog while she’s watching her shows.
DOL – thanks for the updates. Look forward to some live blogging. Don’t really get Twitter. The blog is good enough for me. Does Twitter have more live updates or something? Just put the RSS Feed on my computer, that rocks!
Ken Strick – great analysis as always my friend. Great point on Big Grady; he may have been a hole blocker, but he was a huge liability if teams were able to get the corner or double him effectively. I’m so pumped about the direction TD & Co. have taken us. Everybody was up in arms when we let all the FA’s walk, but we’ve gotten younger, more athletic, and hungrier on defense. Does Milloy have a team yet? And NY may have signed Boley to a pretty big deal, but they drafted Sintim as a backup, so that should show something about their confidence in him. And everyone clamored about us not resigning Foxworth, and there were critics about us drafting two CB’s that were undersized (5′10); well, guess how big Foxworth is…….5′11, 180.
dacha – great to have you back brother. Good analysis and ROY’s.
Stirg – you think there’s a chance that Babs may have to defend his starting job against Big Trey? Regardless, love the rotation of Babs, Jerry, Lewis, and hopefull Walker. Also, never discount the fact that JA might be playing some DT as well, since a lot of us on here think that C.Davis might just win the starting job at DE.
jp3stacks – absolutely great to have you in the ‘Cage my friend. We have brothers and sisters stretched all over the country, but now we got’em all over the world. This can be a great forum for Falcons Football in the land of the Rising Sun. Do you have a TIVO for the games? Welcome.

Ken Strickland,
Your words of wisdom on the DT and D-line in general ring true. Does anyone see a morphing of a 4-3 to a 3-4 “on the fly” with Sidbury? Sometimes up, sometimes down in hopes to confuse an Offence?
Versatility….
I also like your starting Def. In deference to SPS, I see William Moore becoming the starter at either safety. I feel Coleman is solid and Moore will be a rockem’ sockem’ lay the leather to em’ kind of player that will harken to the Glanville era. Old school hustle and hit.
Speed…
Just a thought.

O ya D3 – Something else I learned last night while I was watching NFL network that is going to become an issue in the NFL here shortly. There allow teams to dictate there own 401k and health benifit plans. So free agents will really have to look at those options when picking a new team. With that being said I could see Mr. Blank offering some of the best packages in the leauge which in Sarah’s words turn the Falcons into some “EYE CANDY” for free agents in the future. Just another topic we could talk about during the down time. Everybody have a safe Friday…Training Camp is here! But its raining in the Branch today

D3, I don’t think Babs have to fight for a position (starting or backup) at all because, like SPS indicated, Smitty’s scheme will rotate linemen so much that everybody is going to get start-like numbers. We’re getting caught up in titles, like “starter” and “under tackle”. I think offensive opponents will see some 3-4, 4-3, man-to-man, 46, 3-3-5, etc.. Our defense will be all over the place and we need the players to pull it off.
So lets stop trying to figure out the starting defensive lineup because the scheme is going to change in situations. Just know, that when the Jerry/Lewis Sackathon is on t.v., it is going to be an all out pandemonia. Rotate that with Babs, Walker, Jefferson and Anderson, in situations, and you end up with the best defense in the NFC (fresh legs, youth, athleticism, size, versatility and coachability). I’m excited and look forward to our defensive efforts. Would someone please document the mini-camp this weekend and post it, say YouTube or something?
Stay tuned! Coming up next, is the Jerry/Lewis Show, The Sackathon.

D3- Now you gotta remember a restructured contract is not the same as an extended contract. An extended contract typically means more money and more years however a restructured contract typically just means less money but hey time will tell. TD has shown us fan favorite does not mean its his favorite. If he makes the squad this year great this is the final year of a 4 year contract and as I stated earlier at best it will more than likely be his last.
