HOCKEYTOWN, U.S.A. — Just getting back in the groove after my trip to Detroit to check out Matthew Stafford at the Lions rookie mini-camp.
It appears the plan is to let him learn and watch.
Lions coach Jim Schwartz came over from Tennessee and saw how rushing Vince Young out on the field may have stunted his development.
He’s also studied how the then Houston Oilers handled Steve McNair with kit gloves after the 1995 draft. The Lions want to guarantee Stafford’s success and don’t want to throw him to the wolves.
Before we move onto the Falcons mini-camp, wanted to share a few impressions from the Lions mini-camp:
1. Safety Louis Delmas is a beast! He was all over the field, playing at 100 miles an hour. The Western Michigan product and the first safety taken in the draft is going to make an instant impact.
2. Defensive tackle Sammie Lee Hill from Stillman College is going to get some individual instruction. He is very raw.
3. Tight end Brandon Pettigrew didn’t look as smooth catching the ball as did at the NFL scouting combine. He’s going to be Stafford’s security blanket when Calvin Johnson is not open.
4. Also, Gerald Riggs Jr., son of the Falcons great, received a tryout. They were working him at fullback and halfback.
5. Went to my first hockey game ever! Thought it would be a good place to find some Lions fans for story on
Stafford. The atmosphere at Joe Louis was electric and I got to meet Red Wings Super Fan Mo Cheese. The Red Wings scored with 49.1 seconds to post a 3-2 victory.
6. NEW HERO — If I get into any trouble and need some muscle, I’m calling Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson. Dude dropped the gloves and dished out a swift and decisive beat down of Anaheim’s Corey Perry, after the coach told him not to start any fights.
Well, onto the Falcons mini-camp also known a CAMP SMITTY.
The Falcons will have two practices on Friday and Saturday and one on Mother’s day. Both sessions on Saturday are open to the public. The first practice on Saturday starts at 10:30 a.m. with the gates opening at 9:30 a.m. The second practice starts at 4:15 p.m. with the gates opening at 3:15 p.m.
On Mother’s Day, there is 10:30 a.m. practice so the dinner reservation will have to be around 6 or 7 p.m.
Here are a couple of things we’ll be looking out for at the mini-camp. Remember, that mini-camp depth charts don’t mean a thing. Last season, Pat McCoy was lining at first string left tackle. Smith and his staff will use this time to cross-train folks.
However, how the secondary stacks up is going to be interesting to watch. Don’t be surprised if rookie Chris Owens is lining up with the No. 1s along with defensive tackle Peria Jerry and safety William Moore.
Smitty and the staff showed last year that they are not scare to play rookies. Matt Ryan, Chevis Jackson, Sam Baker, Curtis Lofton and Harry Douglas all received major playing time. Can’t see them going much deeper beyond Owens this year.
Defensive end Lawrence Sidbury is going to be interesting to watch.
Oh yeah, tight end Tony Gonzalez will make his Falcon debut at the mini-camp.
Do you plan to attend the mini-camp? Which rookie are you more interested in watching? Are you excited to see linebacker Michael Peterson and Gonzalez in the red and black?

3 69 Jason Williams LB Western Illinois

4 101 Stephen McGee QB Texas A&M
4 110 Victor Butler DE Oregon State
4 120 Brandon Williams DE Texas Tech

6 208 John Phillips TE Virginia
7 227 Mike Mickens CB Cincinnati
7 229 Manuel Johnson WR Oklahoma
More doesn’t always mean better. The Cowboys draft 12 players? If this were a team in true rebuilding mode, I could understand, but they’re supposedly a player or two away from actually winning a game in the post-season and making it to the Big Show(at least in their minds). I would be hard pressed to think they couldn’t package some of those picks to move up a little higher. I like the picks of Hamlin and Mickens, but beyond that I’m really hard-pressed to find a strategy in this. They draft three safeties and a tight end when they have Witten and Martellus Bennett. Overall, quantity doesn’t mean better quality. Final: C-
New York Giants

1 29 Hakeem Nicks WR North Carolina
2 45 Clint Sintim LB Virginia
2 60 William Beatty OT Connecticut
3 85 Ramses Barden WR Cal Poly

4 129 Andre Brown RB N.C. State
5 151 Rhett Bomar QB Sam Houston State
6 200 DeAndre Wright DB New Mexico
7 238 Stoney Woodson DB South Carolina
Jerry Reese is the man as the Giants GM up in Manhattan. Across the board, the draft was one of the best of draft weekend. Thought they may take Kenny Britt over Hakeem Nicks due to his height and size, but the rest of the draft was a grand slam, IMO. We all know how much the Bird-Cage wanted Clint Sintim. Great pick. William Beatty was slotted as a first round grade by many “experts”. Really like the Beckum pick, although I think Shawn Nelson or Cornelius Ingram would have had more upside. Huge steal on Ramses Barden. The dude is 6′6′ and like 230. Talk about replacing Plaxico. Speedster Andre Brown is a good project to replace Derrick Ward. Rhett Bomar has huge upside. Top to bottom a great draft. Overall: A

D3,
Cowboys- D-
The first two picks were solid. McGee did not play QB his last year. Used mainly at RB. It only gets worse from here. the 2 DE’s could be used at OLB. The K entered USC as a DE and probably their best shot at that position. Who’s in charge down there?
Giants- A
They are solid from top top to #6. There’s a reason THE USC ranked so low in pass defence. Nicks is going to be huge. I don’t know who replaces who, Plax/Toomer, but Nicks will be The Man.

I remember the early 80’s, Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, hearing the loud banging on the tall upper deck sheet metal wall after the Falcons scored against those hated 49ers. I remember Bob Whitfield staring down opponents with his one working eye. I remember Scott Case (Thanks Shawwty Man Man) the gladiator. I remember Billy “Whiteshoes” Johnson and his funky touchdown chicken dance. I remember Morton Anderson’s deafening kick in the Metrodome. So many good memories despite so many losing seasons. Blank and crew: You appear to be leading our beloved team in the right direction now. Damn, I love the Falcons. Lots of new memories to come. “We’ve got Falcon Fever…”

Seems I am the only one to like the scouting report on the Lions. It’s good to get a take on other rookies that might make an impact. It’s something to look for as the season starts.
Actually, IMO, this might have been some of D-Led’s best work.

To the earlier post from Frustrated in Atlanta: I completely agree with your assessment! I myself find it appalling that it seems as though the AJC has this MV love affair. You are accurate as well when you feel that all the coverage leaves a horrible impression on our youth. I noticed that you asked for comments and received zero support. I would like to re-ask the question of how other people in the ATL feels? The only way for crap like that to stop is to have a majority of people sounding off about it. Hooray for Smitty and TD in not only giving us a team that can play, but giving us quality players as well.

Verron Haynes, 30, is a 5-9, 222-pound running back from Georgia. In six NFL seasons, all with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he’s totaled 738 yards on 174 carries (4.2 avg), with 3 rushing touchdowns, all coming during the 2005 NFL season.
He also has 58 career receptions for 429 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Haynes attended North Prep High School in Sandy Springs, Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia in 2001.

I love the talk! I can only hope that the “Cage” is up and firing every day to get me through, ehem, work, until the first preseason kick off against…The Detroit Lions! Seriously, I think it is excellent that the Falcons/Dawgs fans get to see Stafford throw his first NFL pass (and get his first sack and pick, for you Tech fans) against our beloved team on our hometown TV station. And then we get to see, in the opening regular season game, Pat White run the “White Cat” against our new, superfast defense. I can only hope that time flies, but in the meantime I can enjoy all of y’alls great posts. Props of course to DOL for being the navigator!
Now onto business…I see no one has yet to discuss the possibility of Smitty doing some kind of flex defensive set involving the 3-4! Oh the things we could do now that we have El Sid and so many fast young future stars to rush the edge. Oh the humanity! One thing I am especially excited to see is the “rolling bucket of butcher blades” Peria Jerry himself slap chopping the C/G into the backfield while Wammo (William Moore) fires through the hole and flattens the quarterback.
I cannot wait! Keep it coming guys!

I agree with michaelgee and the others about the blog covering the Lions and the hockey as well. I don’t have the time to wade through all this non Falcon ‘journalism’ to get to the meat of the Falcons news. That is just like the rap lyrics that DO post in some of his articles. There’s too much other news about the Falcons, their new draftees and other signees’ that could be discussed here, including injury updates on people that will really matter this season like Trey Lewis, to be spending space talking about the Lions and hockey!!

For the record, I think New Orleans is the most improved team in the division. I think it will be a battle between us and New Orleans for the division. The Panthers should be good, if they get anything close to the real production that Peppers is capable of. They still have a nasty offensive line, two great RBs, Steve Smith/Muhsin Muhammad, and Delhomme. Delhomme will be in year 2 removed from TJ surgery and should get the full strength and range of motion back in his elbow. The Panthers cannot be overlooked either.

D3, got your post from yesterday, just made some finishing touches on the weeds outside that use to be considered a lawn, I have no idea how the previous residents of this house messed up a lawn so bad. Now on to some football.
Rookie of the year
William Moore-Not being bias because he’s a Falcon but I consider the state of franchises and where a defensive player would make the biggest impact. Atlanta’s secondary has room for enormous improvement, I see Jerry adding the middle rush that the defense was lacking and I can see Jamaal Andersen improving his pass rushing ability and when you add Sid,Davis,Biermann and the possibility of playing within some 3-4 alignments, the added pass rushing pressure will funnel more opportunities to an outstanding safety who is looking to show the teams who passed over him, that last year was a fluke year because of injuries and the need to be forced down into the box for run support. So for Def rookie of the year I have:
1.William Moore
2.Robert Ayers
3.Brian Orakpo
Off rookie of the year:
1.Knowshow Moreno
2.Chris Wells
3.Micheal Crabtree

NFC South draft grades,
Atlanta-B+, birds improved the defensive line with a starter in Jerry, and a nice role player for depth Vance Walker. William Moore will probably turn out to be a second round steal, and Lawrence Sidbury will be a great situational rusher until he ready to step in as Abe’s future replacement. Nice pickups in the secondary round out a pretty good draft group with only missing pieces centering around offensive line depth.
Carolina–C, Brown was a nice pickup for a team without a first round pick and Sherrod Martin could turn out to be a second round gem. I also like Captain Munnerlyn in the 7th round. Panthers should have looked at the QB position, I’m just not sold on Delhomme and they have no QB to develop now or for the future, maybe there going to tank this year and make a run at Sam Bradford and the next draft.
Saints-C, Malcolm Jenkins and Chip Vaughn will help to improve a poor pass defense, but the Saints have to many defensive holes and needed to add a quality everydown running back, which Reggie Bush is not.
Tampa-C+, Bucs got a quality QB to develop for the future, Roy Miller will be a pleasant surprise on the DL, and Kyle Moore is a nice pickup at DE. Sammie Stroughter may end up being a late round steal.
Predicted order of Finish
1.Atlanta
2.New Orleans
3.Carolina
4.Tampa Bay
If Matt Ryan can avoid the dreaded sophmore jinx the sky is the limit for the birds in the NFC South. I expect to see a very efficient if not great offense, along with a defense that will improve as the season goes along and play alot faster than Falcons teams of old. The Saints once against will post a top ranked offense that will not be as great because teams begin to catch up with their passing game and without an adequate rusher to take the pressure off of Brees the team buckles once again. Carolina will be somewhat of the same Panthers of late, good to great defense that will keep the team in most games, but once again Jake Delhomme will falter and the Panthers finally address the problem next offseason.Tampa-is in somewhat of a rebuilding year, they have retooled their offense, but an aging defense will be more suspect than Tampa defenses of old.

Carmine, got to give it up to you. As a Bucs fan, it must have taken a lot for you to suggest that the Falcons will take the NFC South (I agree with you, though).
Why are there complaints about the contents of this blog? Just don’t read it. Furthermore, why do you even reply? None of us came down to your job and asked you “why are you serving cold fries? You can’t cook some fresh ones?” Leave the man alone. He’s doing his job.
D3, thanks for the corrections.
Cameron. Personally, I’m drinking a Red Scripe but that has nothing to do with suggesting William Moore will make a run at rookie of the year. Your choices (B.J. Raji, Brian Cushing, etc.) aint that much better. Another thing, I hate to interrupt any ignorance but DeMeco Ryans won the ROY award in 2006 and he was drafted in the second round (33). Kendrell Bell (a UGA man) won ROY in 2001 and he was also drafted in the second round (39). I can go on with my research and I’m sure I’ll find someone else. Just don’t count out William Moore because of his draft position.
Interesting, though: I discovered that since 2000, the defensive rookie of the year award has gone to a linebacker (with the exception of 2002, Julius Peppers; but even he, now, wants to play linebacker). Is this a trend? Should we expect 2009 defensive rookie of the year go to a linebacker?
D.O., you coming back to Detroit anytime soon? I plan to tailgate for the preseason opener (Aug 15) Detroit vs. Atlanta. Stop by for some fish, grits and a Red Scripe (in a brown bag).
Now that we got you home for some questioning, what’s the status on Trey Lewis? I’m trying to mock my defensive starters. Is it going to be Abe, Anderson, Babs, Jerry or Lewis? Personally, I hope Hip-Hip Peria starts.

JohnWaynesworld, I would love to see Hip-Hip Peria win the award but I don’t think he’ll reach double digits in sacks from the DT position. If that happens, we’re a shoe-in for the Super Bowl; and yes, he will certainly deserve the award. Ironically, though, the last defensive tackle to win the defensive ROY was an Ole Miss alumni, Tim Bowens, in 1994. The previous year, 1993, the award was given to another defensive tackle, Dana Stubblefield.

DLed, you should put Stafford updates on the UGA page.
I never visit the UGA page, I was originally from Athens but the dawg love fest should be done in UGA’s section, not the on Falcon page under a Falcon header.
To be honest, had you put a Stafford update under a Stafford Title, the page would have received far fewer hits than you got by misleading people into thinking they would get Falcon news just to plop Lion Fan images and stories about Stafford at the end of the link.

Good A.M. Bird-Cage bro’s! Love the enthusiasm as the post-draft buzz is wearing off. I know all of us want All Falcons, All the Time, but this time of year is the “Dead Zone” for Falcons and Football in general. There are 14 weeks between now and the first pre-season game in D-Town. In DOL’s defense, he’s just trying to fill the huge void between now and training camp. We’ve started some friendly competitions and analysis of other teams and divisions to keep the Falcons/NFL mojo going through this upcoming drought.
Currently, we have a Rookie of the Year Prediction competition and we’re analyzing each division in the NFL, giving an analysis of their draft class, and a final grade. Join the debate/conversation. The more the better.
Unca’ Bob – nice draft analysis. The Cowboys really could even be considered for an F with that pathetic excuse for a draft strategy and draft class.
Caleb – the Falcon’s Fever is building for sure and should be at an all-time pitch come August.
Birdy – agree with you. During this time of serious downtime, we got to expand to looking at other teams around the league to keep the football talk going for us junkies.
taj4au – understand your point for sure. The fans here in the Bird-Cage try to focus on the positive, intelligent football talk and ignore the negative stuff that consumes so many blogs. This blog is filled with good, respectful, and intelligent football talk.
JohnWayne – we welcome you brother. This is the place for thought-provoking, sharp commentary about All Things Falcons and the NFL. Pat White is definitely one of the more intriguing rookies to watch this year. When he’s on, he’s the man(majority of his games @ WVU), but on the flip side, when he’s off, he’s really off(Beat Pitt in ‘07 and they go to the Nat’l Championship). Definitely see us running some 3-4 stuff with Peterson and Lofton on the inside, and the possibilities of Nicholas, Wire, Sidbury, and even Biermann taking the role of that OLB in a 3-4. Can’t wait to see that. I like your style brother. Join the loyal Bird-Cagers and offer your good insight on a regular basis.
cutter – thank you for your service, committment, and honor to our country. We got a ton of True Heroes in the Bird-Cage and we thank you. Welcome back.
Carmine – welcome as a respectful, intuitive fan of football, even if your a fan of the enemy. Even though this may not be a great year for you guys, I like your new coach and the fact that he finally made a commitment to a long-term answer at QB. Love the Roy Miller pick. Hate that we’ll have to be facing him twice a year.
Cameron – got your Rookie of the Year competition. Nice picks.

Theres so much we want to know about the Falcons and I believe once minicamp starts friday you will give us some added feedback on what you observed and any questions you can answer, until then you are keeping things interesting by keeping us up to date on the latest NFL news. If you pay too much attention to the naysayers on this blog you will be giving feedback into what falcons players ate for lunch, who has stains in their drawers, whats so so handicap in golf, who is going to be on pimp my ride or cribs, frankly I can careless if its not about football,so considering the fact you are talking football, do your thing. New Orleans is the oddball team in our division. They are the only team that relies primarily on a passing OFF and they don’t know the meaning of the word DEF. They had that one outstanding season after QB DBrees arrived and have been a disappointment since. They have a tendency to go for the quick fix by spending a lot on FA’s and trades, like using a 2nd & 5th rd pick to get TE JShockey, which is one of the reasons they had only 4 mostly mid to low rd draft picks this yr. They’ve done nothing to improve their almost nonexistent pass rush, which would have provided the biggest help to their still weak secondary.
I don’t see how they can overcome their numerous OFF and DEF problems with a 1st, 2 4th and a 6th rd pick (using one on a punter) and signing a bunch of undrafted FA’s and FA QB JHarrington. How is their DEF going to stop the HFL’s 2nd best rushing OFF and 14th ranked passing OFF (before the addition of TE TGonzalez) with their weak secondary and no pass rush? They simply don’t have the resources or enough capable decision makers to improve enough to compete with us. We defeated every team within our conference after our bye week last yr because they were unable to handle the improvements we made during the season.
I have another idea for keeping things going for us Falcon heads. Let’s try to figure out who will make the starting OFF and DEF lineups for the upcoming season. I’m trying to make my list, but I can’t make a decision on SS, DT and DE.

By the way, did anyone else hear Michael Wilbon call Atlanta “The worst sports town in America” the other day on PTI?

D3..Sorry, still suffering from PDS (post draft syndrome)
I have enjoyed the reads and projections, I’m a little surprised that Moreno and Crabtree were’nt on a few more ROY projections, I think they will be starters from game one, however, I don’t know who can throw to Crabtree. I do think you can see the Defensive ROY come from the #55 pick.
DOL..Not upset to hear about the Lions camp (We do have a COUPLE of Homers there) Looking foward to your coverage of our camp this weekend.

Just wanted to say thanks to the Bird Cage and the excellent posts by our knowledgeable Falcons football fans! I really appreciate the positive vibe our blog as acquired! Seems like some of the old guard has left the blog and the new crew has invigorated the blog with some grade A Falcon Fever!
I love our picks of Sid, Moore and Jerry. I think we’ll be a formidable defense for any team to face and you gotta love the Peterson pickup. I don’t see how anyone is going to be able to stop our offense with TG as MR’s safety valve.
It’s nice to get a little scouting from DOL on Stafford with the Lion’s. DOL, you rock! Since taking over this blog it has improved dramatically and I for one enjoy your articles. Thanks for all your efforts.
Seminole Warrior, many thanks to your trooper for the sacrifices he is making for our country…our thoughts and prayers are with you guys.

I am so looking forward to the weekend. I am excited about all the rookies and want to see how they mesh and preform. I honestly don’t expect a lot out of them but just hope to see some potential which I know they all have. The thing I most want to see is who is going to step up and become the leaders on defense. I think that might be a key that we can begin to see over the weekend. By the way SeminoleWarrior I am greatful for the young warrior and for him paying the price for us all. Give him my best and he will sure be in my prayers.

DOL: Something I’ve been wondering about…how Tony G will handle playing in domes on artificial turf for an entire season at his age. By my calculations, TG has played only 11 times on turf in his entire career. This year alone he will play (if healthy) 9 times in a dome on turf. Is this a cause for concern?

Thanks D3 for the kind text. Now to the picks…
OFF ROTY: 1)Knowshon Moreno, 2)Pat White, 3)Chris Wells.
DEF ROTY: 2)Peria Jerry, 2)B.J. Raji, 3)Brian Orakpo
D3, I think this is the year of the Beast (NT). I put Orakpo in the 3 spot because he next to the Big Beast, Albert “Mo’ Please” Haynesworth and should get plenty of open space.
