No Pam Grier, Beyonce or Batman for this week’s mock draft.

With a shade over a week to go, the dust is starting to settle around the National Football League. We must get down to some football business.

The last few visits are being taken and teams are finalizing their draft boards. They are reviewing several scenarios that could unfold on Saturday, April 25.

One of very popular scenarios has USC linebacker Brian Cushing, once considered a top 10 pick, dropping to the Falcons at No. 24. It’s likely because the glut of defensive end/outside linebacker types and because of his red flags. If he’s there at 24, he’ll be holding up a red and black jersey around 8 p.m. next Saturday night. Check out some Cushing highlights.

Who are the Falcons going to select in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft?

The draft is packed with a lot of hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker types. With so many teams going to some version of the 3-4 defense, those guys are at a premium. The group includes LSU’s Tyson Jackson, Penn State’s Aaron Maybin, Florida State’s Everette Brown, Northern Illinois’ Larry English and Virginia’s Clint Sintim.

Another key position to keep an eye on is wide receiver. A lot of teams are in the market for wide receivers and there could be a first round run at the position. After Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree and Missouri’s Jeremy Macklin teams may start to panic.

Look for a couple of teams to make trades before the draft for Arizona’s Anquan Bolidin and Cleveland’s Braylon “Mr. Dropsies” Edwards.

If you see Jackson, Maybin and Brown go ahead of the Falcons, then Cushing is falling. He may free fall right into their laps.

Cushing is a fit for the Falcons 4-3 defense at either of the outside linebacker spots. He played strongside linebacker as a freshmen, junior and senior for the Trojans. He played defensive end as a sophomore.

Cushing would not come without any baggage. Rumors of steroid use started back when he was in Bergen (N.J.) Catholic High and followed him over his four years at USC. He was also involved in an incident in April of 2006 where he was handcuffed and put in the back sit of a cop car. He was never arrested, but the images where shown nationwide.

Coach Mike Smith shows off nice form in the cloeset to the pin contest.

Coach Mike Smith shows off nice form in the closest to the pin contest.

“Some scouts worry about Cushing being more of a body builder than a football player with his strict eating regimen and shredded physique, and durability long has been an issue,” wrote Nolan Wawrocki of Pro Football Weekly in their 2009 draft preview.

A couple other things to note, USC quarterback Mark Sanchez, Cushing’s old roommate, has jumped into the top five. Also, Tennessee defensive end Robert Ayers (12) and Ohio State wide receiver Brian Robiskie (29) make their debut in the mock draft this week. Oklahoma’s Duke Robinson (28) was in earlier, but had dropped out. He’s back this week.

Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis, Southern California’s Clay Matthews Jr. and North Carolina wide receiver Hakeem Nicks have dropped out of the first round.

LEDBETTER’S 2009 MOCK DRAFT 5.0

Welcome to the ATL Brian Cushing.
Welcome to the ATL Brian Cushing.

1. Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia. Stafford has impressed the Lions. Now they can show him the money!

2. St. Louis Rams: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech. First stunner of the day. The Rams need receivers after letting Torry Holt go. (The link is to a nice article from our good buddy Allen Wilson of the Buffalo News.)

3. Kansas City Chiefs: Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest. The Chiefs get around to addressing their suspect defense.

4. Seattle Seahawks: Mark Sanchez, QB, USC. Didn’t play much in college, but can backup Matt Hasselbeck until he’s ready.

5. Cleveland Browns: Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB, Texas. Should fit nicely in Eric Mangini’s version of the 3-4.

6. Cincinnati Bengals: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor. Bengals look for some more protection for QB Carson Palmer.

7. Oakland Raiders: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia. He slides a little bit, but the Raiders will snap him up.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College. The Jags get an anchor for their defense

9. Green Bay Packers: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU. Packers have to improve their defensive line.

10. San Francisco 49ers: Andre Smith, T, Alabama. With Sanchez off the board, Singletary decides his motivational skills can help Smith.

11. Buffalo Bills: Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State. After picking up Terrell Owens, the Bills turn their attention to defense.

12: Denver Broncos (from Chicago): Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee. Welcome to the DOL’s big board.

13. Washington Redskins: Michael Oher, T, Ole Miss. The Redskins take a major step towards rebuilding the the offensive line.

14. New Orleans Saints: Chris “Beanie” Wells, RB. Sean Payton is looking for someone to run the ball between the tackles.

15. Houston Texans: Jeremy Macklin, WR, Missouri. QB Matt Schaub get someone else to throw to other than super stud Andre Johnson.

16. San Diego Chargers: Eben Britton, OT, Arizona. Chargers elect to address their offensive line.

17. New York Jets: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State. Jets get their Brett Favre replacement.

18. Denver Broncos: Everette Brown, DE, Florida State. The Broncos stick with defense as they try to resurrect the Orange Crush

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State. Is a good fit for Tampa’s Cover-2. He’s a solid corner, but doesn’t have elite speed to play a lot of man-to-man coverage.

20. Detroit Lions (from Dallas): Rey Maualuga, LB, Southern California. He slips, but doesn’t get past the Lions.

21. Philadelphia Eagles: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia: It would be a reach to take a tackle here, so they make a value pick and get Brian Westbrook’s heir apparent. They’ll try to replace Tra Thomas later.

22. Minnesota Vikings: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida: Vikes add a play maker to go with Adrian Peterson.

23. New England Patriots: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois. Pats decide that their locker room is strong enough to keep Davis focused.

24. Atlanta Falcons: Brian Cushing, LB, USC. Everything breaks right and the Falcons get their man. He’s could have shot at winning one of the outside linebacker spots.

25. Miami Dolphins: Darius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland. Has a big upside.

26. Baltimore Ravens: Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi. A good fit up front for the Ravens.

27. Indianapolis Colts: Larry English, DE, Northern Illinois: Bill Polian finds another potential Pro Bowler late in the first round.

28. Philadelphia (from Carolina): Duke Robinson, OT, Oklahoma. Eagles elect to get their tackle here, even though he may be better suited to play guard.

29. New York Giants: Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio State. The precise route runner will be expected to eventually replace Plaxico Burress. Check out the son of the Falcons receivers coach show out against Texas last season.

30. Tennessee Titans: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State. His 40 times are scaring a lot of folks.

31. Arizona Cardinals: Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut. Edgerrin James will get his wish to be released after this pick.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Clint Sintim, LB, Virginia. A perfect fit after playing for Al Groh at Virginia.

Western Michigan's Louis Delmas is a ball hawk.

FIRST ROUND FRINGE
James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State
Clay Matthews Jr., LB, USC
Evander Hood, DT, Missouri
Louis Delmas, FS, Western Michigan
Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers
Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest
Alex Mack, C, California
Max Unger, C, Oregon
Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina

Would you like to see the Falcons select Cushing with the 24th pick? Should they pass on Cushing and take Sintim? Should the Falcons trade the pick and move back into the early part of the second round and select Western Michigan defensive back Louis Delmas?

MARKO,

I understand the confusion. But if they don’t feel confident that they can get the players that fit those descriptions, with the picks that we have, then they have two options: 1) trade up or down accordingly, or 2) do they best they can to fill in at other needs/positions.

They may decide to go “smaller” with a guy like Hood or Jerry. My only problem with Jerry is do we really want to go with a 25 year old rookie who might have trouble learning our system? I don’t know…and I could be wrong about my fears of him not being the impact player we want.

There’s just no telling…and we still have the whole tight end thing to deal with.

SeminoleWarrior,

As good a question as any. One thing has been maintained/reported, and that’s the fact that Dimitroff and Smith have remained on the same page with everything. If there has been a change in plans for the defense, both guys are on board with it, and they are playing this very close to the vest. Who really knows?

Mystery, mystery, mystery. Just more suspense added onto what we already have, lol!

What’s goin’ on my Bird-Cage Brothers? Wow, are we in the final stages or what? Actually kind of hard to believe that its going to be THIS weekend instead of like a month, 2 weeks, or 3 weeks away. We have punched out some serious theories, scenarios, and thought patterns regarding our Birds. Thanks to you all, we’ve taken it to another level (I notice the hate baiters don’t frequent as much as they used to).

Check out this little nugget I heard on Sirius NFL Radio’s Movin’ the Chains with Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan: There was a discussion about the Falcons potentially wanting to go after Glenn Dorsey. At first I was quick to slough it off as an irrational caller, but They legitimately talked about it for almost 10 minutes or so. Supposedly, KC is looking to acquire draft picks because they only have 2 picks in the top 100 picks. There was also word that Dorsey doesn’t not fit at all in the 3-4 and they might be willing to shop him. They went on to discuss how enamored TD was with Dorsey last year and how he and Pioli are obviously close. The following scenarios were offered up:
1)Falcons give up their 1st and 2nd pick
2)Falcons give up their 1st and 3rd pick
3)Falcons trade 1st round pick and Jamaal Anderson

I’m sure it won’t even be an issue, but it was somewhat enjoyable to at least entertain the idea. The only scenario I would consider would be 1st round pick and JA, but its doubtful Pioli would take that. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to get Dorsey, but giving up two draft picks in TD’s second draft after he delivered such a grand slam in his first draft. So your thoughts boys? What would you be willing to part with for Dorsey?

On target as usual Big Ray. Could be a prelude to a 3-4 transition. Which really has me going off into space. But, indulge me here for a minute, my brothers.

Recall that TD was previously the Patriots director of college scouting. And recall, the Patriot way is to be very careful in free agency, trades, and the draft. It is all about filling needs.

With that, I’ll add this little nugget. One of TD’s prize finds during his time with the Patriots is coming available next year as a UFA. This young man has five years experience in the league as of this year and is emerging as one of the league premier NTs. TD knows him, scouted him, drafted him, and will definately go after him. TD will easily convince both Smitty and AB that THIS is the guy to complete the transition to the 3-4 scheme. Additionally, the Birds should have some final resolution to the Vick contract situation by then, freeing up needed cash for this signing.

My brothers, I present to you, a preview of next season’s top free agent signing.

D3, I certainly hope that is not the case. TD would be better served to go my suggestion and wait on Wilfork next year. We can draft Dorsey this weekend in the form of Peria Jerry. This deal, if TD was to pull it, would be a total waste of picks and time. Check out the production of both Jerry and Dorsey while in the rugged SEC west. PLEASE D-Led, use your contacts with TD and shoot this one down if it has any merit.

Seminole – what’s the word money-T? I think you may finally have gotten me over to your side on one of your OSU boys, that being Freeman. Do you think there’s anyway he lasts to the 3rd round if we take Pettigrew first, then safety next? BVG will be great. He was the absolute MAN when he was at UGA. Trust me, we still regret the day he left, but at least he’s with our Falconi’s.

Ken Strick – good point on safety depth. Did DeCoud get hurt or something last year? I went back and realized that we drafted him in the 3rd round, so he should be on the same level as Chevis Jackson and HD since they were drafted in the same round. Any possibility of moving Robert James to S due to his size(5′10, 219)? I could see us drafting one anywhere between round 2 to round 4.

Big Ray – you got it on the first pick. It really will change the whole draft, IMO. If we lock up Pettigrew first, then we obviously will focus on the DEF the rest of the way. If we go DEF first, there’s a number of ways we could go. Is used to think that we could wait until the 3rd to pick up a good TE, which is quite possible. But I’ve come to the conclusion that Nelson and Cook have more of an upside than Coffman or Casey, for example. So if we go DEF first, I’d say we should go TE next to ensure we get Nelson or Cook. BTW, I’ve tried to lobby DOL and lead people at the AJC to get us a quality Falcons Fan Blog and I didn’t receive one email. I emailed like 7 people. Any advice?

DT seems very deep in middle round talent(Roy Miller, Sammie Hill, Terrance Taylor, Sen’derick Marks, Chris Baker, etc.), as well as safety (William Moore, Chip Vaughn, Rashad Johnson,Michael Hamlin), and even CB(Jerius Byrd, Keenan Lewis, Sean Smith, Brandon Underwood, Sherod Martin). OLB seems to not have near the middle round depth that these other positions have. Cushing, Matthews, English, Maybin, Barwin, Sintim will all be long gone. Marcus Freeman & Cody Brown( compared to Shaun Phillips) is about the last big time talent and it seems to take a pretty big drop down to, say Kaluka Maiva & Jonathan Casillas. In other words, if we want a big time potential contribution @ OLB, we gotta spend a 3rd round pick on one, IMVHO.

Marko – good point on our D-Line. I’ll say that since this draft is pretty deep with big run-stuffers. Between Ron Brace, Roy Miller, Terrance Taylor, Sen’Derrick Marks, Fili Moala, Sammie Hill or Dorell Scott, I think we’ll find our perfect complement to Babs/competition for Trey Lewis.

darrelstark – nice mock. I used to be the biggest geeked out freak for Cushing, but after doing a little research, he’s really on the same level as Matthews and I’d much rather take someone like Sintim who may be a hair slower, but bigger, tougher and more experienced. That being said, I won’t be that upset if we get Cushing. Even though he’s my boy from UGA, Allen in Round 3 is too high, IMO.

No need to even consider a trade for Dorsey when we can get the same thing in Ziggy Hood or Peria Jerry. A review of their college stats reveals very little difference between Jerry and Dorsey. What would concerne is the amazing similiarities across the board. Both were very productive in college but were also injury-prone. Stay away from this trade TD…if you must have a smaller, quick DT, go with Ziggy.

I agree with seminole, if Falcons expect Jerry to be there at pick 24, take him instead. Now if the trade was made I would be more willing to trade the first and a third because the falcons could still pick up a Jared Cook in the second and possibly move back into the third round with the multiple picks they have in rounds 5 and 6. I would give Jamaal Andersen another year before making him expendable, like I said, I believe the bird cagers are in for a pleasant surprise from Andersen this year.

Good morning my brothers. This “trade scenario” is silly in my opinion. Why would we give up picks in the draft for a still unknown quality. I no further value in acquiring Dorsey than drafting one of this year’s prospect. Taking on the remaining portion of his $50 million dollar deal($23 million guaranteed) would also tie up our hands. Hood, Jerry, Hill, or any of the tackle in the draft would come MUCH cheaper. No reason at all to make this deal.

It, if completed, would represent the first strike in the ballgame for TD and Smitty. Stay with your gut fellows…stay away from Dorsey.

I’m watching Kiper, McShay, NFL Live, and a host of other draft shows and reading the websites. I have a feeling a lot of us will be revising our mock late Friday or early Saturday. Denver, Jacksonville, Philly, Buffalo, NY Giants, and Washington are all possibly looking to move. We will have to see how it plays.

The idea of Micheal Johnson slipping into the third round would change my falcons mock draft. I couldn’t see the birds taking johnson in round one or two but in the third I see something special and heres my thinking process. Johnson is 6′7 266lbs and runs the forty in the high 4.5 to mid 4.6 range. As a project you turn Johnson into a pure linebacker he has the speed and height to man up on tight-ends without any need for over the top safety help, no other team or player offers the same combination set, teams usually put a LB or safety on the TE and 99% of the time the TE always has a height advantage even in perfect coverage which is why teams use over the top safety help, Johnson eliminates that option which would only make a defense that much better. Imagine a LB who drops in coverage on a TE without the need of safety help, you would have two safeties roaming the secondary with two corners on receivers in a normal package, in a nickel you have 3 corners with the two safeties. A defensive coordinator could use some wild imagination in his blitz package because a player or players have been freed up to come from any angle. In the variety of sound blitzes defenses use Johnson would help offer a monster of choices. If Johnson is truly slipping into the third round, the birds take 1.Jerry, 2.Cook, 3.Johnson, 4.Moala if he’s there if not Sammie Lee Hill. Johnson at 3 looks pretty good. Your thoughts anyone?

WR, I really don’t know about this one. Your scenario would actually play into what I described last night. Are we quietly transitioning to a 3-4 scheme? And is Van Gorder up to the task as a DC?

A change is oming in my personal Falcons mock as doctors have advised my second pick in the fifth round, TE Brian Mandeville, to not pursue a NFL career due to a heart condition.

Best wishes to the young man. He has skills, was compared to Kevin Boss of the G-men, and would have been a nice late round steal I think.

Seminole, I don’t think we have to transition to a 3-4 for this to work. Its just a hypothetical view of using a freakish player like Johnson as a pure backer not a LB/DE hybrid. Johnson is so freakish in his physical attributes that I figured why not play around with some different uses for the guy. Problem is no matter where he is used he has to be more consistent and I’m saying that as a Tech fan. If this guy could stay focused he would be the still of the draft in the third round.

Keep in mind, we still have option of trading a very flawed, and yet very talented Michael Vick. Also, in QB hungry league, Shockley is a waste as a bench-rider, and J Anderson might actually fit into someones defensive scheme somewhere (I type with straight face, no less). Look for one or all of these options to be exercised. Drafting Pettigrew would signal a return to the brain dead decisions that represent the history of the Falcons. If not interested in bringing Justin Peele along (quite talented and servicable, affordable without dropping ones pants), then wait for Jared Cook (as good as Pettigrew in all aspects). Considering our needs, squandering the first pick on a tight end would be moronic.

i honestly dont see the falcons getting a LB with their first pick…no matter who falls to us. i hate to say it, but i think LB is one of our least needs on D, although we arent very doos there. DL and our entire secondary is in much worse shape than our LB. i say e trade back a little and get delmas or moore. cook in the second round.

with all of our holes on D, i say the we finish 8-8 at best. the O wont be good enough to make up for how young/inexperienced/just not good our D will be this year. we got by with smoke and mirrors last year, and you can only ride your luck for so long. plus the schedule is so much harder than last year. 8-8 at best, probably a game or two worse. but i think were headed in the right direction. IN TD WE TRUST! give it a few years and the falcons will be a force to be reckoned with in the NFC.

Falcons should definitely land Cushing (if he’s still on the board). The guy is a workhorse with lots of talent. Also, there’s no way that sumo slug Andre Smith should be a top 15 pick, he’s grossly overrated. Finally, James “Lil’ Animal” Laurinaitis, & SC’s Clay Matthews Jr should go in the 1st round. There both ball hawks & are getting the shaft on this mock draft.

COACH KEN STRICK:

Thought you might get a kick from my take on the REDSKINS o-line current position. Sounds like being a FALCONS fan from a few season’s back doesn’t it? I’m hoping SIX FLAGS goes under and DANDY DAN et. al. are FORCED to sell their assets to cover the loss. Damm, I hate being cynical, but right.

O-o-o-o-h, SCOTT BURLEY, EDWIN WILLIAMS and MIKE WILLIAMS along with DERRICK DOCKERY and a resurrected JON JANSEN will be the saviors of the offensive line. Oh, and D’BAPTISTE also, lest we forget.

Lets see from LT to right by position:

Currently unable to participate in offensive practices – SAMUELS, STILL recovering from last season’s injury. DOCKERY brought in because RINEHART (third round 2008) can hardly stay on the active roster. D’BAPTISTE playing out of position and unproven at any. RABACH capable as long as the guards on either side take up the slack. EDWIN WILLIAMS to back-up the center position and to replace “the GEYSER ” who is recovering from injury last season. THOMAS limited participation, recovering from SERIOUS surgery. JANSEN trying to prove he still belongs. HEYOR questionable abilities to carry the load at right tackle, but probably will do O.K. in 2009. SCOTT BURLEY and MIKE WILLIAMS just in case.

Makes a fan feel mighty secure and full of hope for the season doesn’t it? CAMPBELL-ZORN just lovin’ life. Zero pressure-zero heat.

Since we drafted replacements for KHARY CAMPBELL and JUSIN TRYON on special teams lets see about the captain himself, ROCK CARTWRIGHT. After all we’ve got our own “Refrigerator” in MIKE WILLIAMS 6′5″ 410. No need for a third running back OR fullback now. MIKE SELLERS where are you? Your contract requires you to show up and be counted among the present. There will be demerits for tardiness.
