Mock draft updated: Falcons pick Clay to mold

Dana Point, Calif. — Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris was quite the engaging fellow at the NFL Owners meeting.

Tried to get around to all of the NFC head coaches during their availability session. Checked in with Morris and New Orleans coach Sean Payton before the clock ran out on the session. Didn’t get to Carolina’s John Fox.

Wanted to a better line on their offseason pickups and their draft needs for the Mock draft.

Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris.

Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris.

“We probably need to get another corner for depth,” Morris said. “Got to get somebody in to compete with (cornerback) Elbert Mack.”

Morris likes their free agency pickup of RB Derrick Ward and the trade for TE Kellen Winslow.

“At receiver, we’ve got angry workers . . . (wide receiver) Dexter Jackson (of Dunwoody) has an opportunity to explode on the scene this year,” Morris said.

Also, former UGA standout Jermaine Phillips of Roswell is moving from safety to weakside linebacker, Morris said.

Payton said the Saints, like the Falcons, felt their biggest moves were re-signing their own players.

Jon Vilma, Devery Henderson, Jon Stinchcomb, keeping those three
guys was really important, prior to any other move,” Payton said.

Fox told the reporters at his table that he hasn’t talked to Julius Peppers since the team slapped the franchise tag on him. He blamed all of the fuss over Peppers saying he wants out of Carolina on the business on the league.

We’ll, we haven’t forgotten about our second installment of the Mock Draft. We’ll update each Friday leading up to the April 25 draft.

New Orleans picks 14th. Tampa Bay picks 19th. Atlanta picks 24th. Carolina doesn’t have a first round. They traded it to Philadelphia last year in order to get tackle Jeff Otah.

We have the Falcons going for USC linebacker Clay Matthews Jr. this week after further research and DE Larry English dropping to Pittsburgh.

LEDBETTER’S MOCK DRAFT

Clay Matthews Jr. worked hard to turn himself into a pro prospect. His father played in the NFL from 1978 to 1996, including his final three seasons with the Falcons.

1. Detroit Lions: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor. Lions will try to negotiate a deal before the draft. They pass on Stafford as they try to anchor their O-line.

2. St. Louis Rams: Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest. The defensive mind Steve Spagnuolo gets some one to anchor the unit.

3. Kansas City Chiefs: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia.

4. Seattle Seahawks: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia. Can learn the rope behind Matt Hasselbeck for a year or two.

5. Cleveland Browns: Everette Brown, DE/OLB, Florida State.

6. Cincinnati Bengals: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech. Bengals ignore his injury woes.

7. Oakland Raiders: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Mark Sanchez, QB,
Southern California.

9. Green Bay Packers: Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas.

10. San Francisco 49ers: Andre Smith, T, Alabama. With Sanchez off the board, Singletary decides his motivational skills can help Smith.

11. Buffalo Bills: Rey Maualuga, LB, Southern Carolina.

12. Denver Broncos: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU.

13. Washington Redskins: Brian Cushing, LB, USC.

14. New Orleans Saints: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri. Sean Payton adds another weapon for quarterback Drew Brews.

15. Houston Texans: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State.

16. San Diego Chargers: Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss. The second run on tackles starts here.

17. New York Jets: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida. Jets elect to add offensive weapon.

18. Chicago Bears: Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois. A physical corner who’d fit nicely in their Cover-2.

20. Detroit Lions (from Dallas): Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State. After passing on Stafford, the Lions add their quarterback.

21. Philadelphia Eagles: Eben Britton, OT, Arizona. They have to find a replacement for Tra Thomas.

22. Minnesota Vikings: Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi.

23. New England Patriots: James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State.

24. Atlanta Falcons: Clay Matthews Jr., OLB, Southern California. Could help rebuild the linebacker unit.

25. Miami Dolphins: Clint Sintim, LB, Virginia.

26. Baltimore Ravens: Darius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland.

27. Indianapolis Colts: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia.

28. Philadelphia Eagles (from Carolina): Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State. The Eagles get someone to share the load with Brian Westbrook.

29. New York Giants: Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina.

30. Tennessee Titans: Duke Robinson, OG, Oklahoma.

31. Arizona Cardinals: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Larry English, DE/OLB, Northern Illinois.

FIRST ROUND FRINGE
Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech
Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut
Evander Hood, DT, Missouri
Louis Delmas, FS, Western Michigan
Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers
Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest

So can you see Matthews lining up in the Falcons defense? Trading down and amassing picks is a possibility. Do you pass on Matthews and pick up more picks? Pettigrew is sitting there, but Falcons aren’t tempted. Is that a mistake or there are too many defensive needs?

I wonder if people misunderstand the best player available premise or they question who the best player available is and the amount of difference between him and the other players that play that position. I think we can all be true Falcon fans and debate these issues. Game changing players come from all areas of the draft they just cost more in the 1st round.

Just PULEEEZE not another TE or DE in round 1! I’ll take a USC OLB over a NORTHERN ILL DE anyday. Big, fast, strong, great attitude.

The Falcons are in definite need at LB, but champions are built from the inside out. I would rather pick a DE who can rush and put immediate upfront pressure than LB. If our interior lineman are doing their job(s) the LB’s will be less exposed. They will pick English (possibly Johnson of GT) in the 1st and LB in 2nd round.

Take the best of either LB/CB/DT remaining. So I’m OK with Matthews. And I’d take either Jared Cook/TE/S. Carolina or Shawn Nelson/TE/S. Miss in a New York minute in either the 2nd or 3rd rounds. Both of those kids are ballers.

I want to address all the “draft-a-DE-lobbyists”. Is anyone paying attention? Never, in the history of the NFL, has a rookie defensive end made a pro-bowl type impact on a team. The only way drafting a defensive end at 24 is that he plays linebacker, e.g., Larry English.

garcia, I admire your logic. Sintim is a good pick and TEs can be coached. Good choices; good logic.

STIRG: Some pointed out early on that you’re down on CMJ from USC.

STEVIE RAY: I don’t believe that Garrard’s deal was that big.

I love the birds more than anybody. Our weakest spot right now is the corner position. Chris Houston and Brent Grimes are not going to cut it. We need a shut down corner. How could the birds let Foxworth get away. They need to get my boy from Wake Forest, Alphonso Smith. I have seen him play in person and he is the real deal.

It’s so nice to read all the posts. Great to see the interest and the passion back in the Falcon Faithful. Kudos to TD and Smitty for last year’s draft. They had arguably the best draft of the year and with that result the proverbial bar has been raised and so we are all pumped and hyped as the draft is 30 days away…….can’t wait!!!!

Anyway my take is that our needs are CB, DT, DE, SS, and TE (extra offensive weapon but must be able to block), not necessarily in that order.

24 – DE – Aaron Maybin (very explosive);

#55 DT – Ziggy Hood (exceptional first step – will be a pro’s pro);

90 – CB – D.J Moore/Darius Butler/Sean Smith (in that order if they are available);

125 – TE – Jared Cook (would like to get Cornelius Ingram but he won’t be there at this pick and we have needs);

143 – SS – Darcel McBath (great speed – 4.45 40, 6ft – 199 converted from CB to S – hybrid just what TD and Smitty want);

160 – OT – T.J. Lang (intense and football savvy and you can’t have enough of these)

196 – DT – Roy Miller (non stop energy)

That’s my stab at the Falcons draft. Whatever happens I will trust the judgement of the brainthrust. One swallow does not a summer make but TD has been doing this for a while just not for the Falcons. Thank God we have him now.

Have you ever noticed that TD never goes through an interview without mentioning Smitty? That’s a good sign that they are obviously on the same page. That’s a great team and I hope it continues that way!!!

Go Falcons!!!

Nuff respect!!!! Bigup de Falcons!!!

Stirg – even though I still, respectfully of course, disagree with you on Clay Matthews and that drafting him would be a great idea, but you do make a good point on Nicholas being out of position. Hey, I’m all about Nicholas too, and if he’s the man at OLB, I’m completely pumped. I just think he might be the best pure OLB available, after Cushing. English and Maybin strike me too much as ‘tweeners. Sintim is a ILB.

We do, however, totally agree on DE. I just can’t, for the life of me, understand why we would draft a pure DE when we have J.Anderson, C.Davis, Abraham, & Biermann. No sense.

Garcia – I would have no problem taking Pettigrew in the first, even though I think we should wait, but I wouldn’t be upset. Have to disagree with you on Sintim & Hood, though. I was big on Hood, but after getting a feel on him, I think we can get much, much better value with guys in the later rounds. IMHO, I think Clay Matthews is a little better fit than Sintim. Love his work ethic, and one of his weaknesses is listed as “can be too aggressive at times,” I’ll take it. Wouldn’t be upset with Sintim either, but #24 is too high.

Jonathan – perfectly said! Nothing against Michael Johnson, b/c I think he will be a stud, but why would we draft a DE project like Johnson?

WR – good of you to point out that we are building a foundation instead of one hit wonders.

D.Starks – sorry buddy, gotta disagree with you on Sean Smith. Love, love to have him and he may be gone by #55, but he’s not a #24 talent. Maybe if we moved back, but Delmas/Chung/S.Smith/ or Chip Vaughn will be there. No need to reach when we have DeCoud.

Orlando, I know that you intend to upgrade this thing every week, but there’s no way Detroit passes on Stafford. They have to pay somebody thirty million and he’s the only one that’s worth it. If anybody is? I suspect that the first time he throws to Calvin it will leave a kind of a bad taste in his mouth, but over time he’ll come to enjoy it.
It’s sad that the best Georgia has to offer should wind up playing in Detroit of all places, but that’s the way it works sometimes. When they’re not playing us I’ll pull for them.
I’d love to have Matthews. He came to USC as a hundred and sixty- six pound walk on. Four years later he’s going to be a first round pick. I think he’s proven that he has the character Dimitroff looks for in a player. The fact that his dear old dad was a Falcon makes it even better.

D-Led:

I will try not to be so harsh this time, but man not too much better.

Singletary has to deal with another talented, but immature athlete like Vernon Davis. I think not, no way he goes after another baby sitting project.

Seahawks draft Stafford. Maybe. Seriously doubt it though. Why does everyone think Hasselbeck only has a year or two left in him. Yes, he was injured last year. He will be back to health this year. He carried their offense on his back the year before. I think he may have 4-5 years left in him. Maybe not in Seattle, with the nutjobs they have running thins now. Except for Tim Ruskell, he made Rich McKay, Rich McKay.

I also think Sintim is a long shot to go in the first round. I could be wrong, but most things I see is mid second to early third.

I really do not think the Falcons are going to draft one-year and workout wonder Clay Matthews. He has good speed and rushes the passer well. He is not very good at stopping the run. Just about every source knocks on his inability to hold up at the point of attack. Our primary focus is to run the ball and stop the run. Especially at SLB, you want a run stopper. WLB could be the freelancer, cover guy, pass rusher. If we draft a LB in the first round it will be SLB. Not Matthews. Hope I am not wrong.

I also do not think that the Cardinals will draft Pettigrew. I could be wrong, they are definitely in a spot in the draft and with their team where they can draft he best available player there. But, they have lost some people off of their defense, that wasn’t very good to begin with. They played well at the end of the year because they got after the QB. I think they go best defensive player available with their pick. We’ll see.

I know you can do better. Keep trying, I BELIEVE in you.

Folks are asking why Falcoons would pick so many DE, S ? Uhhh…. because we need them.

Coleman, DeCoud and Fudge are the only safeties on the depth chart. Fudge is strictly special teams. I dont see a better safety on the board than W. Moore. Perhaps, after 8 INTs in 2007, teams decided not to throw his way??? Rashad Johnson provides more quality depth. Injuries do happen guys.

DL: Michael Johnson just too good to pass over. His athleticism is off the charts, his range, speed, motor and metrics are upper-echelon. In fact, could play some OLB. Chauncey Davis, M. Johnson and Biermann would be the future. We also know D.Abraham is on borrowed time, and M. Johnson will be in place when that time comes.

Brandon Williams might be a project, but when you put up 13 sacks in one season and 22.5 over a 3 yr. career, you’re doing something right. Again, we’ve got to push the pocket and he has natural instinctive ability to do just that. Sammie Lee Hill provides the depth up the middle we lack.

Dominique Johnson will give us more size, speed and depth at CB. I may reconsider Nic Harris at 125, Falcoons could add a decent TE here for Ryan’s sake, but truthfully I like Justin Peele in his second year.

My picks have warts, but major upside. I don’t see anything that 2 yrs. in an NFL weight training/conditioning program wouldn’t address.

All good points on Clay Matthews. I do understand the knock on him concerning experience and that he may have tapped out. His measurables are very comparable to Sintim’s and Barwin’s, but I haven’t seen one single mock draft that has Sintim being taken over Clay Matthews.

The question is though: if not an OLB, then who? (Pure DE’s not allowed)

I have completly lost all respect for Mike Singletary. If M.Stafford’s answer about his parents divorce is a key componet in the 49ers decision to draft him, then what in the H*ll is Singletary’s problem? I was under the impression this guy was a football coach. I also thought this was an NFL team, not an encounter group. I guess I was wrong on both counts. Matthew, I hope you beat the stuffing out of them every time you face them.

Everyone has an opinion, right or wrong, and it is those opinions that have made the wait for the season to start a little more entertaining. Everyone has progressed so well, just a few days ago almost everyone got off the Laurinatis bus, now if we can throw Clay Matthews in front of the nearest bus not headed to Atlanta the falcons will be okay. D-Led, I know its only been a couple of days sense you reported that Trey Lewis and Hutchins were cleared to participate in workouts, but I’m wondering is there any word on how they look.

I mean if the guy had a past consisting of cops and robbers or dogs (j/k, couldn’t help myself) I could understand, but we’re talking about his parents, if anything the fact that his parents got a divorce and he was able to move on and lead a major division one college team at the most important position should say that even in the toughest of times and in the NFL we all know there will be many, this is a guy you want to go to battle with.

Smith (S/CB), P. Chung(SS), W. Moore(SS), D.J. Moore (CB), Sintim (OLB), OR Nelson (TE), which ever we feel is the most pressing need. & then in the 3rd adreess another.
I’d love to see Brace with the 1st 2cnd, with the 2ncd, 2cnd rounder W. Moore (SS), P. Chung(SS), Smith (S/CB), & then in the 3rd M. Freeman, & then the 4th Travis Beckum or C. Coffeman

Smith said Peterson is capable of playing all three linebacker positions. He also said the weakside and strongside linebacker positions are “interchangeable” in his defense, which puts a premium on speed and attacking the ball

All good points on Matthews; unproven yes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he will not translate to a stud in the NFL. The thing that I like the most about him is his work ethic. Self-made man, quick, aggressive, and a knack for making the plays. I could totally see us taking Sintim as well. Since most of us agree that Nicholas is all but slotted to take over WLB and Peterson to take over SLB, the question comes to: what do we prep a replacement for, Clay Matthews at Weak LB and move Nicholas to SLB when Peterson is done, or draft Sintim to take over for Peterson, and hope Nicholas pans out. The crazy thing is that many o’ mock drafts have Matthews going directly before Sintim.

Seminole – I’ll concede to you that Matthews may be a reach, but Freeman in the 3rd? I’m gonna have to say that that would be bad move as well. Some of the Freeman’s weaknesses per scouting report don’t sound good:
“Is not very physical. Won’t deliver the big hit. Has trouble shedding blocks. Isn’t a great blitzer.” Obviously, that is somebody else’s opinion, but that doesn’t sound like a Smitty Defensive Player. I’ll concede you a Matthews, but no way on Freeman in the 3rd. If no on Matthews, I say yes on Sintim. A step slower maybe, but just as strong, mean, & tough as Matthews.
