Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff promised that the team would not be emotionally driven when making some tough decisions this offseason.
The team’s laser-focused evaluations have pushed several players into free agency including longtime local legend Keith Brooking.
Also, out on the free agency market are cornerback Domonique Foxworth, safety Lawyer Milloy, linebacker Michael Boley, defensive end Chauncey Davis.
The team is clearly planning to rebuild the defense.
Milloy and Foxworth must be replaced in the secondary.
Brooking and Boley, both of the outside linebackers are exploring other opportunities.
On the line, nose tackle Grady Jackson is also a free agent.
That’s five of the 11 starters. However, linebacker Coy Wire, who started for Boley late in the season is set to sign a two-year deal on March 1st.
The good news on offense is that they have the “Bruise Brothers” – right guard Harvey Dahl and right tackle Tyson Clabo – back. Both were restricted free agents.
Here my list of five possible free agent targets for the Falcons:
RON BARTELL, CB, Rams: Could be a nice replacement for Foxworth. He went to Howard University, so we know he’s smart.
MIKE BROWN, S, Bears: Savvy veteran who could stabilize the unit.
L.J. SMITH, TE, Eagles: A decent pass-catcher, but would have to get reacquainted with blocking. (My man PhillyDawg told me that the next block he throws will be his first. That won’t flow well with offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey.)
DRE BLY, CB, Broncos: The veteran cornerback market could be a nice option.
SEAN JONES, S, Browns: Former Georgia Bulldog is the type of combo safety the Falcons covet.
Also, we’ll check on defensive end PAUL SPICHER, 33, who spent time with head coach Mike Smith and defensive line coach Ray Hamilton in Jacksonville.
So do you like the Falcons’ moves? Where is Brooking going to land? Would you welcome him back if the free agency thing doesn’t work out? How can they let Foxworth go? Share your list of free agents you’d like to see the Falcons pursue.

I’m pleased to see how all of the negative comments about certain Falcon players has prompted a number of level headed, unbiased Falcon fans to comment.
OLEDBETTER-I have a series of questions to ask you.
(1)Do you think DE has become a bigger priority on the DL than DT?
(2)Do you think our coaching staff is more interested in drafting a pass catching/blocking TE as a fulltime starter, or signing a FA that’s a situational pass catching TE?
(3)Do you think we’re more interested in drafting a top tier SS as a starter, or signing a vet FA SS to start and mentor the 2nd tier SS prospect we can draft in a lower rd?
(4)If DE has become a priority, does that mean our coaching staff is not sold on either DE’s KBiermann and JAnderson as fulltime starters opposite DE JAbraham?
(5) Do you think we’ll pass on DT Jerry if he falls into our laps at #24? I just don’t see DT Raji falling that far.

My God! What a nightmare.
Mel Kiper Wakes In Middle Of Night Thinking He Missed NFL Draft
NEW YORK—Football personnel analyst and perennial NFL Draft fixture Mel Kiper Jr. woke from a sound sleep Wednesday night with a start and a muted shriek that startled his wife, Kim, whom he told he had dreamt about missing the entire 2008 draft. “I woke up, you know, and looked at the calendar, and it was Monday? And the whole draft was over? And I’d slept through it because I figured it started at 3 p.m. this year instead of noon, so I didn’t set an alarm?” Kiper said through chattering teeth while his wife tried to calm him by attempting to stroke his meticulously gelled hair. “But I had worked so hard putting together Mel Kiper’s Draft Preview and I was sleepy, you know? So I slept so hard I slept through it and—and—and they had it without me. Without me!” Mrs. Kiper was eventually able to soothe her distraught husband, and the couple passed the rest of the night without incident on the makeshift bed on the steps of Radio City Music Hall, where they spend the time from the end of college football season until Draft Day.

I was checking for updates when I stumbled across some old predictions for the 2008 season. That was some funny stuff, looking back on it.
I have to believe TD knows what he’s doing. He overhauled the roster last year and came up with a top-10 offense that will be in place for years. Even when we didn’t have the greatest talent level on defense, they coached ‘em up.
We haven’t had management and coaching this good at the same time ever. Never ever. Dan Reeves was a great coach, but often a questionable judge of talent. When we did get big-time players in here, we surrounded them with garbage or had clowns on the coaching staff. (I’m looking at you, Jerry Glanville and Jim Mora.) You didn’t know what you were getting from year to year.
From nailing the first-round draft pick for Ryan to the big free-agent pick-up with Turner, to the mid-level starting safety Coleman that turned out to be pretty good, even down to picking up Foxworth and Peele at the last minute—TD showed that not every move had to be a big splash. He got role players, complementary players, and the coaching staff took care of the rest.
As for the guys who are gone, they won’t be too hard to replace:
Foxworth: gave up nothing to get him last year; got a good cheap year out of him; now let someone else overpay him. We gave Jackson, Houston, and Grimes another year to develop. If Foxworth were worth the money, we would have paid him. Mr. Blank did not misplace his checkbook.
Boley: not enough fire, so they went to Wire. (Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss.) I’d take Wire (and Nicholas for that matter) over Boley, and again, they’re cheaper.
Brooking: no longer a starter; can’t be a backup b/c you’re not going to put him on special teams. Done. Nicholas, draft pick, whatever. Anyone who can run and hit would be an upgrade.
Milloy: worries me the most. We need someone to step up at safety, and I’d already prefer Fudge or DeCoud in pass coverage. It would be nice to have someone who can do that and really hit, too. I think TD will figure it out.
Chauncey Davis: it would be nice to keep him, but Biermann can be the swing guy, and there’s always Spicer or a draft pick. No big deal. Again, let someone else overpay him.
In the end, this team is finally a team, and whoever comes in is going to be the kind of guy who busts his tail, and he’ll be coached by guys who can coach.
Instead of spending big money on the overpriced FA defenders that are out there, let’s use it to extend Roddy White’s contract. Just sayin’.
I’m setting my alarm clock for draft day. Good night and God bless us, every Falcon one.

Its all up to Dmitroff to out smart us all.
A lot of last years success was a very weak schedule due to the Vick debockle. But the organization made all the right moves and took advantage of it. This year we will have a tougher schedule and a lower draft choice, and now the additional challenge of replacing some very servicable veteran players. It will be critical to make some key free agent signings and perhaps one or two key trades.
I would love to see Laurenitis and Orakpo make their way here personally.
Not many free agent LB’s or Dlinemen out there.

NITEOWL-I’m glad to see you contribute, and contribute you did. Can’t argue with a thing you said, nor would I want to. From what I’ve read, CDavis wants to start and is a bit upset that JAnderson was given the starting job even though Davis matched or exceded his production is far less playing time. If Davis resigns, it will probably mean some assurances have been given about his chances of becoming a starter.
If we can get pressure on the QB, it will take a lot of pressure off our secondary. It appears our DEF philosophy is to play a lot of man coverage, and have our CB’s be physical at the line of scrimmage, which is the knock against Houston. I think the cost, along with the return of CB’s VHutchins, DIrons and BGrimes from IR, promped the decision not to resign Foxworth. LB Boley’s production fell considerably because his style of play just didn’t fit the new DEF scheme and he didn’t adjust. I don’t think he would have come back no matter what the coaching staff decided. After all, he went from being considered a Probowl calibur LB in 07, under HC Petrino’s DEF scheme, to being demoted and replaced by CWire under the new DEF scheme. Can you blame him?
I believe SS will be our major focus. We’ll either draft one with our 1st pick, or pickup a vet in FA, and draft his eventual replacement in a lower rd. We might do the same thing at TE. I think we’ll definitely go after a DE, SS, LB or DT(if Raji or Jerry are available) with our 1st three picks, but not necessarily in that order.
At any rate, we’ll have two new starting OLB’s(probably CWire and SNicholas, unless they fall flat on their faces), a new SS, DT and possibly a new DE. The combination of a quicker, faster, more athletic DT with more stamina(TLewis over GJackson), a SS with pass coverage skills(replacing Malloy), 2 OLB’s(possibly Wire and Nicholas) that are better fits in our DEF system(replacing Brooking and Boley), and a DE that can pressure the passer and take advantage of the opportunities created by DE JAbraham(replacing JAnderson), could signal the beginning of a solid DEF to match our OFF.
Tell me NITEOWL-isn’t it amazing how some Falcon fans get all worked up and develop this WOE IS US attitude just because our schedule will be tougher? For that reason alone, we’re starting to here from some of them the same stupid, uninformed predictions of doom and gloom that so called experts predicted for us last season. I agree with what you said about losing CB Foxworth, SS Malloy and LB’s Brooking and Boley. Replacing them, their salaries and cap charge, just might end up making us better in the long run. I don’t think Brooking went elsewhere because of money. I believe it was his refusal to accept the role Smith and his DC projected he would play if he resigned.

And on the subject of Milloy, you mention the names of the WRs that beat Milloy, Fitz and Bolden. Both All-Pro calibre guys. Who was it that “beat” Keith 3:16? That’s right. Crabby, try as you might to blame LawDawg for Keith 3:16’s defining moment, but the truth is, he already owned up to blowing the coverage. The 11-year vet simply blew his coverage, didn’t know his assignment, bit on the release of a back running a 5-yard hitch already covered by lofton, and gave the season away. Smitty couldn’t believe it. Now everyone’s moved on. No need to be bitter and project blame all over the place.

After the changes that TD and Co. have made, I’m not going to second guess them.
I admit that I was a little worried by the fact that there is almost no news with the falcons (other than the guys that are leaving), but I realized something. Would you want to bring in FA’s into ATL this weekend? How many guys are going to be excited to come to snow and cold? Remember, perception is reality.
The other big concern I have is this overwhelming desire to say we need a starting XXXXX out of the draft. We’re picking 24th, and if we focus on a certain position, we will not get the best player. I’m sure some will misunderstand what I say, but my point is we can’t say we have to have a linebacker and pass up a higher graded safety or lineman.
Some players that I’d like to see us try to get. I’m looking for youth and guys that won’t break the bank.
OT Khalif Barnes – Coach Smith will know if he’s worth bringing in
DB Ron Bartell – Young and fast
S Sean Jones or Jermaine Phillips – Jones is a younger, Phillips is bigger and more of a true SS
LB Cato June or Napolean Harris – Both are solid
Before we panic about losing players on defense, remember that Pittsburgh seems to lose players every year and are still winning. They have a good system in place and have qualified backups that can step in. That seems like the direction we are headed.

Thanks Ken, looks like you’ve really thought things through, from scheme to personnel and back again. I think the biggest difference in our management now is that they can find the role players and the mid-level players that make a huge difference when they’re put in the right scheme and coached well.
After being on the job for just one year, all they need to do is fill a few holes on defense, upgrade at TE, and maybe get some more depth on the O-Line. I feel that, going forward, it’s just going to be a matter of fine-tuning, bringing in more unsung gems and making them stars (like Foxworth).
I may be getting light-headed or something, but I feel like we’re going to follow the model of the Steelers and Patriots for years to come.
And we’ve only broken the bank twice, for Turner and Ryan, and they were both home runs. We’re not creating any more dead money.
As for the schedule, I’m not thrilled, but I’m not scared either. To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best. I do know that every year, teams that were good last year stumble the next. So some of the teams we face next year won’t be as good as they were this year.
Also, I don’t bow down to the AFC East and NFC East like a lot of people do. While I expect every game to be tough, I’m not too worried about the Jets, Dolphins, Bills, Eagles, or Redskins. And who’s to say we can’t stand toe-to-toe with the Patriots, Cowboys, and Giants, and maybe steal a couple of those games?
The thing I loved most about us this year was that we made the other team worry about us. We came out of the gate and jumped all over teams, for the most part. We’re acquiring passionate players who don’t know fear and don’t defer to the supposedly big-time franchises. I love it.

Congradulations to Keith for signing with the Cowboys and leaving the Falcons fans behind. The fans have complained for years about a guy who has given his all to the team and community, now it will be interesting to see who else they can blame for the lack of defense. Maybe they’ll get their wish and the entire team will be loaded up with former Bulldogs, wouldn’t that be just great. Let see we now have a 2nd year middle linebacker, a guy who is as old as Keith but was never a Pro Bowler who started only 4 games, and another guy who couldn’t beat out anyone at the other linebacker spot last year. Plus, we’ve lost another linebacker, a strong safety, our best corner and possibly Grady in the middle on a defense that wasn’t that great last year anyway. Most importantly without Keith and Lawyer there is no leadership on the D. John Abraham is a great defensive end, one of the best, but I’m not sure he wants to take a leadership role. Personally I hope Keith has his best ever game as a pro when they play Dallas next year, he desires the respect that he couldn’t get in Atlanta over the last few years. You wanted him gone and now you’ve got it, let’s see what the future holds for this new D we’re building.

An article from si.com pointed out something I had forgotten about, which makes it an even better move to hang back and not sign a bunch of over-valued free agents.
Not sure if anyone else mentioned this already, but we would get compensatory draft picks if it’s deemed that we lost more in free agency this year than we gained last year. (Or something. Not sure how they figure that out exactly.)
Bottom line is we could get a third-round compensatory draft pick in 2010 for each of the dearly departed Foxworth, Brooking, Boley, and Milloy. Four extra third-rounders?
Yes indeed. I’ll take it.
And by the way, BB1, I’m with you. I liked Brooking. I hate that there was so much hate on him. I believe he gave it his all through some difficult times. I’m not going to knock him for not being Brian Urlacher or whoever. But it was definitely time to go, for the good of everyone involved.
I’m still not rooting for the Cowboys, though. Never. At least, even if Brooking has a good game against us, I know he’ll have more class than to take a Jeff George victory lap.
Also, BB1, you got me thinking: as for the Bullodogs lineup, we already have D.J. and Thomas Brown and Martrez Milner, so we’re off to a good start. But if we pick up Butler at safety, maybe we can call it a draw and put all Bulldoggies on offense and all the Yellow Jackets on defense. Draft Michael Johnson, pick up Gerris Willkinson from the Giants since they just got Boley. Hmmm…
Maybe this could bring harmony to the AJC Falcons blog, at long last.

ALL quiet on the free agency front.
STRICKLAND: (1) Do you think DE has become a bigger priority on the DL than DT? NO.
(2)Do you think our coaching staff is more interested in drafting a pass catching/blocking TE as a fulltime starter, or signing a FA that’s a situational pass catching TE? We’ll see. If they sign L.J. Smith, he’s a situational player who doesn’t block.
(3)Do you think we’re more interested in drafting a top tier SS as a starter, or signing a vet FA SS to start and mentor the 2nd tier SS prospect we can draft in a lower rd? Doesn’t look like it. They are being rather passive in free agency.
(4)If DE has become a priority, does that mean our coaching staff is not sold on either DE’s KBiermann and JAnderson as fulltime starters opposite DE JAbraham? No.

The Falcon’s current management seem to be taking an Football operational approach instead of a marketing/sales approach to personnel decisions. I prefer a Falcon team built along the team concepts of Colts/Patriots/Steelers. Building teams of big names (and egos) has not worked for Cowboys/Redskins/Tampa Bay. Build for the long term thru the draft with a few key value added free agents (Turner).

scott pioli has shown that he likes to trade with old friends, i would think that would include our own beloved dimitroff. thinking along these lines, a trade i’d like to see would jamaal anderson for tony gonzalez and a mid round draft pick. i think it would win win for both sides. jamaal seems to be a better fit for three four and tony wants to play for a contender. we get a great older player. the mid round pick would allow us to train tony’s successor, and kc get a good young player to build around. aint it great to be a contender. who’d a thunk it a year ago.

Not sure how Paul Spicer doesn’t make sense for the Falcons. We are losing Chauncy Davis, and Kroy doesn’t appear ready. JA98 is a black hole at LDE.
Spicers a vet (which we are gonna need on that young D) and we cant fill every hole we have via the draft. Spicer gives you 150% on every play and works as hard as anyone. He had a down year bc of the youth movement in Jax but can still get after the QB and actually plays the run better than the pass. He is a MASSIVE upgrade over anything on the roster currently.
Fox leaving hurts. That secondary is gonna be YOUNG.
