Report: Officer shoots non student near high school

Below is a time line of the initial reports that a non student suffered non-life threatening injuries after being shot by a school resource officer at Redan High School in Stone Mountain. The AJC, Channel 2 Action News and WSB Radio will continue to update the story here. 4:22 p.m. Channel 2 Action news reports that DeKalb County Schools said there was a fight at approximately 3:30 p.m. after school. A school resource officer went over to intervene and a nonstudent pointed a gun. At that time the school resource officer fired his weapon. The nonstudent was hit and taken to the hospital. DeKalb police will be investigating this incident.

4:17 p.m. Channel 2 Action News is reporting the person shot was not a student.

4:07 p.m. This just in from Jason Gagnon, spokesman for DeKalb County Police: “Apparently, there was a fight that started on school grounds and ended up on a side street close by.” Gagnon said they are still gathering details on whether it was officer involved or not. He said the criminal investigation unit is en route to assist. Gagnon confirmed the patient was shot to the arm with non life- threatening injuries.

4:02 p.m. More from the police scanner: Report that one person is being transported to Grady Hospital in Atlanta with a gun shot wound to the shoulder. Check back for details.

3:57 p.m. DeKalb Police say they can’t confirm the shooting. “Still trying to confirm if there even was a shooting,” DeKalb County Police spokesman Jason Gagnon told the AJC. “I know there was a fight and some kid may have brandished a gun, but its still unclear at this time.”

3:53 p.m. The AJC and WSB Radio confirmed there was an officer-related shooting near Redan High School. The address reported is 5247 Redan Road, which is Redan High School.

3:35 p.m. According to police scanner traffic, shots have been fired at Redan High School in Stone Mountain. Reports say it’s an officer-involved shooting. Dispatchers said a burgundy vehicle is being sought by police.
