Everyone in Braves’ nation has a Dale Murphy story or fond memory to tell. The Braves were absolutely atrocious during most of Dale’s tenure in Atlanta, and he provided the majority of the highlights.
Having said that, 23 years after he was traded to the Phillies has many of us remembering Dale with rose-colored filters. I suspect if Dale was not the outstanding individual he was, all this Hall of Fame talk would not be brought up. His career numbers were not that spectacular. He was dominant from 1982-1987; other than that period his offensive production was good but certainly not dominant like a Mike Schmidt, or Reggie Jackson or Eddie Murray.
Reality: you almost had it. You missed the point that I was making. During the years 1982-1987 when murph was dominant, many of the guys were have since been enshrined in cooperstown were playing and MURPH OUTPERFORMED ALL OF THEM. When murph won his two mvp awards, they were two stong mvps that knocked out many great hall of famers who couldnt keep up Murph. Even Muphs teammate Bob Horner, who should soon be elected to baseballs hall of fame, couldnt put up the numbers that Murph put up during his 6 years of pure dominance. MURPH SHOULD HAVE BEEN ENSHRINED YESTERDAY IN BASEBALLS HALL OF FAME. IT WAS A GROSS MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE AND AN OVERSIGHT that now cannot be corrected since Murphs time has elapsed and expired. But murph was such a great man, and a gentle giant, that murph said today that HE WAS HAPPY JUST BEING ON THE HALL OF FAME BALLOT FOR 15 YEARS. What a humble guy that is and an example to all the cheaters of the world who did steroids and PEDs.
“Just because they turned a blind eye to PED use in baseball does not obligate them to vote for PED users and I have to question the rationale of anyone who thinks this way.”
Again, I’m not saying that. I’m simply saying that if you said the follow (direct quote from you):
“The players who are in the HOF are a reflection of their times and the judgement and morals of the writers who voted them in during those times.”
…then by your standards they should be voted in. I’m not saying this is what I think, just pointing out what you said. You’re running circles around yourself here.
…then by your standards they should be voted in. I’m not saying this is what I think, just pointing out what you said. You’re running circles around yourself here.
I really can’t see how you’re getting from A to B here. There is nothing in my statement that infers PED users should be voted in. I have, in fact, stated quite the contrary several times. It is you who is trying to twist my words to suit your agenda. Shame on you.
Bravothusiast _ I’m thinking maybe the disconnect is that you equate turning a blind eye to PED use with condoning it. I do not. I’m sure, very certain, that many of those writers wanted to speak out but didn’t do so for various reasons that may have included the possible loss of their jobs or access to the teams they covered.
As I said, turning a blind eye to PED use does not obligate them to vote PED users into the HOF. This seems to be the part you are (it seems intentionally) ignoring.
Brava, that was not a personal attack, I can assure you. I apologize if I have offended you or if you felt I was trying to deceive you or twist your words around, that was not my intention. I suppose I can’t properly convey the point I was trying to make based on your statement, so I will drop it.
As I posted earlier, MLB did not turn a blind eye to PED use. They tried on several occasions to put that in the collective bargaining agreement but were strongly opposed by Marvin Miller. Although he comes across with as much subtlety as a bull in a china closet Jerry Reinsdorf was correct when he stated after Miller’s death that he does not belong in the Hall of Fame because he is the individual who is most responsible for the lack of drug testing in MLB.

Brava, agree. I just wasn’t sure after the shame on you comment, I didn’t want to come off as some sort of internet troll or something. The last thing I want to do is insult a fellow Braves fan. Cheers!

Agreed! Murph’s knees were shot to pieces. He could barely get around. The knee surgeries back in the early 1990s were nothing like they are now.
Interesting proposals for redevelopment project in the less-than-thriving area around Turner Field. Hopefully it gets done. The Braves really need something to happen like this.
DOB, I find those proposals for redevelopment of the area around Turner Field exciting. I’d be willing to move down there if the housing were affordable. That would be a dream fulfilled to live so close to The Ted!
Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens deserve any explanation from the Hall of Fame voters, and here are two expalnations worthy of these two: “None of the writers ever knowingly omitted either of you two from their ballots.” Or “No baseball HOF voter has ever tested positive for having a bias against Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens.”
What was sad about the contemporary baseball greats being SHUT OUT of the hall of fame, the writers were ridiculous because there were at least four guys who legitimately should have been inducted into the HOF and were smeared and shut out because the vast majority of them were using PEDs. The four guys who should have gotten in were Curt Schilling, Mike Piazza, and the two killer Bs Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggeo. Its stupid that those four guys have to be PUNISHED for the others who cheated. They have to correct this soon because you ask yourself, what if they were doing steriods when Henry Aaron, Mike Schmidt, Willie Mays and Babe Ruth played. You mean you would have denied Schmidt, Mays Ruth and Aaron entrance into the HOF because 20 or 30 others were juicing? Think of what an uproar that would have been. This is sickening and I am sick to my stomach thinking of the GROSS MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE than was done by the baseball writers. The baseball writers are INSANE and OUT OF CONTROL..
Actually there were five guys who should have gotten into the HOF. Fred McGriff (Crime Dog) should have also gotten in with Schilling, Biggio, Bagwell, and Piazza. Noone else was deserving of being put in, certainly not McGuire, Sosa, Clemens, Bonds and Palmiero, none of whom should NEVER get in because its their blatent, obnoxious steriod use and use of PEDs that has gotten the entire generation of baseball superstars into a bind.

LaFayetteLever,
Murphy: 398 HRS, 1266 RBIS, .265 BA, 5 seasons of 90+ RBIS
Dawson: 438 HRS, 1591 RBIS, .279 BA, 7 seasons of 90+ RBIS
By the way. Mike Schmidt hit 548 homers, had 3 MVPS and was the premier slugger of his generation. Comparing Murphy to Schmidt is delusional.

LafayetteLever,
Bob Horner: 218 HRS, 685 RBIS, drove in 90+ runs TWICE; never drove in over 100
He won’t make the Braves’ Hall of Fame !
Maybe Gene Garber should be enshrined for stopping Pete Rose’s 44 game hitting streak; or Rick Camp for hitting the July 4th homerun.
Duh.

Bravothusiast, no need to apologize. We’ve had a spirited discussion, which I have, for the most part, enjoyed. Perhaps I’m being a bit thin-skinned.
It’s pretty clear that we are both very opinionated and aren’t going to change each others minds.
