So winning 94 games and having a better pitching staff next year to look forward to isn’t positive? There is no guarantee that Francisco and Gattis won’t combine to outperform what Chipper gave us last year. In fact I’d say the chances are better than 50% that they will. That means if Uggla just returns even close to his career numbers this offense should score plenty to win a lot of games with our pitching including shut down pen. This team is going to be fun to watch for years. Too bad you won’t see it through your “Angel Eyes” though.

Where did you come up with better staff. No chipper, Replacfed with Upton-K’o king. No Ross. Replace with Laird-another loser. No Hinske. Replace with Pena. Wow exciting. No Durbin No Hanson. Catcher-on his way out. 2nd base another ko king. No 3rd baseman unless prado then no lf. SS one yr wonder. CF – not the answer. So where is your 94 wins. Also 94 wins last year. still losers.

I said better pitching staff. We have Hudson from day 1. Last year he started the season on the DL because of surgery. We have Medlen all year, Minor seemed like he turned a corner 2nd half. He should be good for 13 -15 wins. Maholm will be better than JJ and either Terehan or Delgado should have no trouble replacing Hanson’s performance . The only negative is we are without Beachy til July but that could feel like a mid season trade when we get him back. Our #1 rated bullpen will be even better with Walden. That’s how I see our pitching staff being better.

Loved Hinske but he’s done. Losing him is addition by subtraction. We’ll have Johnson all year now so we have the best pinch hitter in the game for a full season. Big upgrade over Hinske , Overbay or Pastorncky. We have a centerfielder that won’t mail it in after the All-Star break like Bourn did 2 yrs in a row. We have one of if not THE best defensive SS in the game. I know this line up isn’t perfect but I’m glad Wren didn’t cave in and trade away our farm system for talent that might not be better than Francisco and or Gattis. I’m excited to see what this team does in spring training even if we start with who we have now.

You are just like Wren. Pitching pitching pitching. You need pitching, but if you don’t score runs you don’t win.. Upton willNOT come close to Bourn. The SS was a 1 yr wonder. Catcher can hang it up. 3 hitters Prado, Heyward, Freeman. That is all. 3 players don’t win. Braves won 94 last year and LOST. They won’t even come close to 94. Pitching helps win but you have to score enough runs. This team did not improve. It got worse. Yes Walden will help. Who replaces Durbin. Wow Guerrin and Avilan. Goodness give them a cookie. By the time the bullpen is in the game is over.

First off I hate the one game play in. Baseball unlike other sports play 162 games and than to have to play one game to decide who gets into the playoffs is ridiculous.
Second I would like to see the Braves stay put until spring training and see how Francisco and Gattis work out and if one or both can’t hack it than make a move. If one or both make it we could save a lot of money which could be used signing Prado, Heyward and Freeman long term.
I’m sick of signing has beens for a couple of million a year and then not adding anything to the club.

Bobbymahlon. It’s nice to hear someone want to give Francisco and Gattis a chance because not only do we save money if even one of them pans out, we save trade prospects too. The cost to get some of the names mentioned , Upton, Stanton or Myers (now with Tampa) would have been really high in trade chips. What if if both of them play close to or above expectations? We could be a dangerous team. The Nat’s have now lost 3 LH relief arms from their pen as well as Jackson from the rotation. They haven’t signed LaRoche yet and if he goes to the Red Sox or someplace else they will miss him both offensively and defensively because Morse can’t play 1B like LaRoche. I’m not willing to just hand the division to Washington in winter because the Braves are going to start the season with a better pitching staff than last year and I’d be willing to be we hang in with the Nat’s step for step this year instead of falling behind them like we did last year.

by the way it’s not just money and prospects to be considered IMHO it’s the fact that several of the trade options out there didn’t really make me think they’d be a guaranteed upgrade to Gattis/Francisco and Prado rotation. Why not audition the in house talent when we don’t have a solution that guarantees us to be in a better position ?

Where is the improvement that will pose a challenge to a better balanced and better managed Washington Nationals ?

Wren is one of the reasons why we have a chance.

Fredi G. Too.

Its amazing the good our baseball people do accomplish in spite this ownership.

Braves fans can be fortunate that we have baseball people that hide the horriffic ownership we have.

For those who care, looks like the NHL will be back. That is good for me.

I still give a dam about the NHL, will make one out of town trip somewhere this yr.

The Glads are a nice reasonably priced evening out the CHL hockey just does not really do it for me. If there were more coverage I would be more interested. Would rather see Glads coverage than HS stuff.

The Dan Uggla trade will saddle payroll for another 3 seasons.

He got Jesse Chavez for Rafael Soriano.

If Atlanta had a critical sports media and not so casual fans, Frank Wren would have been shown the door years ago.

Stop the whining about Liberty Media. Somehow teams like the Rays, Rockies, Marlins and Giants have reached the World Series in recent years with comparable or much smaller payrolls.

There has only been ONE World Series played @ Turner Field, back in 1999.

And the Braves were swept in four games.

I don’t see another in the near or distant future.

This is so comical I almost fell out of my chair !

Is it possible nobody likes talking trade with Frank Wren is because he has little to offer in return? The much-ballyhooed pitching prospects Frank has been hoarding aren’t rated too high outside the organization. Who’d want Dan Uggla? The minor leagues are devoid of any highly rated position players. Outside of Simmons, Freeman, Heyward, Miner, Medlin, Prado or the bullpen studs, who is Wren going to offer in trade, Schafer? Francisco?

Depending on where Prado starts, looks like the Braves are going cheap on either 3B or LF.

Reality Check.. It’s so interesting that you say we have nothing to offer and that our farm system is devoid of any highly rated position players and then go on to mention the following players. Simmons, Freeman, Heyward, and Prado….. ALL of them are Braves homegrown talent and all of them will be All-Star caliber players for years to come. Not to mention Medlen, Beachy, Minor, Kimbrel, Ventors, EOF, Teheran, Delgado and Bethancourt are homegrown and either have already or will soon be contributing to the Braves success.

Only 3 teams can say they won more than 94 games last year. The Yankees, Cincinnati and Washington. By the way NONE of them won the WS either. It’s not Wren’s or Fredi’s fault that Chipper threw our season into right field in the Wild Card game. Medlen had that game under control and even though Fredi took lot of criticism they day before the game when he announced he was starting Ross and sitting McCann, Ross had them in position to win the game.

Some of you guys need to look at the league as a whole and see how well our team is doing and the kind of position we are in for long term success on a strict budget. None of you could come close to doing the job the Braves front office has done.

Either be a Braves fan and get behind this team or go home and make your family’s miserable with all of your negativity… I for one am sick of you…

I am pretty excited seeing BJ Upton and Heyward on the same team with their 30/30 potential.

Rest assured that Uggla and Mc Cann will be better in 2013. Uggla will be better I am certain.

And Wren did not get ripped off with Derek Lowe who did give some innings and 31 wins in 09 and 10. So, he overpaid — who is not overpaid.

Kawakami , that was a different matter. So the Rafael Soriano move did not work out — all GM’s make a bad move from time to time.

The Mc Louth deal did not work for either team.

Liberty Media really does suck — mediocre ownership, otherwise its a fine baseball org.

There are worse owners than LM but there are plenty better.

Since 2009 the Braves have mattered — all under FW’s watch. And I do lose my patience with the Fredi Gonzalez bashers.

Angel Eyes…… I think you’re going to be proven very wrong calling Simmons a 1yr wonder. Every great player at one time was a rookie and he has all the markings of a great one. Let’s see how he’s doing late in the season next year and beyond. Remember the Rangers wouldn’t trade Andrus or Profar to the D’Backs for Upton either and neither would the Indians with Cabrera. That signals to me that GM’s including the D’Backs Towers value a great SS more than a LF’er. So why would Wren trade a player that has the chance to be really special at SS for a corner outfielder? I’m really glad he didn’t. If we can still get Upton without giving up Simmons it might be the thing to do but I’d rather have Simmons than Upton any day. There are some projections that Simmons may be THE most valuable defensive player on the field next year in all of baseball. Runs saved are runs you don’t have to score to win.

To say we have pitching that no one wants is almost laughable. The Braves have several pitchers that other teams have tried to pry from Wren. He simply hasn’t been made an offer to match up with our needs or for enough talent to justify letting them go. (One exception was almost trading Delgado for Dempster) thank God Dempster vetoed the trade. Other than that the Phillies and Nat’s overpaid for Span and Revere. We have Upton and our pitching still in hand. I’d rather have Upton than either Span or Revere and wait and see there will either be a need for that pitching due to injury or a better time to trade them when another team is desperate for a starter and we can get a better return for them.

Lighten up man… It’s only baseball. Why don’t you enjoy it a little?

Can’t get too excited about BJ Upton and his whopping .298 OBP. With 169 strikeouts you’d think he’d have more than 28 homeruns last season. I guess Frank Wren felt compelled to invest 75 million in someone to make Uggla feel better about himself.

I agree, Braves won’t be there. We have Uggla Mr Strike out king who has not lived up to hype, We have BJ Upton who will forget how to hit and be best friends with Uggla and we have a team who will take a 3rd baseman from 3rd to left and back and forth. Heck, I did not even know who the lineup was last year. Hitting 1st, now hitting 4th, now in the 3rd spot. I got tired of watching and just stopped. I love the Braves but the Owners, this GM and our New Manager have not got the skills to run this club. Three things have to change. Liberty, Wren and Gonzalez. All three are a bust.

Why do we want Kubel? He’s going to make $7.5 Million or better next year he hit .253 and struck out 151 times.. yes he hit 30 homers but his average over the last 5 years is 22HR. He strikes out 3 times as much as he walks (even Uggla does better than that) and he’s not great defensively. I think we have a good chance to get 30 Hrs out of a Francisco/Gattis rotation for league minimum and no prospects traded. Even if the Diamondbacks GAVE him to us which they won’t I’m not seeing an upgrade over Francisco/Gattis. I’ll bet they hit north of .265 with 32HRs and 90RBI if they play. Francisco will play more because there is more RH pitching so I’d bet he hits 18 HRs and drives in 55 at least.. That leaves Gattis to only have to hit 14 HRs and drive in 35 to make it work.

This outcome which isn’t hard to believe IMO saves the Braves $6.5 Million and a couple of prospects. I say unless we can get a superstar in the making in return like Stanton or Headley we stay put until at least spring training and see how these guys shake out. No reason to spend money and trade chips unless we are guaranteed an upgrade and I don’t see one in Kubel.

One of them became a free agent this winter and the other didn’t. If Kubel were a free agent, he’d not be making $7.5 million in ‘13.

By the way, over past 3 seasons, Kubel made $16.85 million and had 74 doubles, 8 triples, 63 homers, 180 runs, 240 RBIs, 2 steals.

In that 3-year period, Upton made $14.825 million and had 94 doubles, 11 triples, 69 homers, 250 runs, 221 RBIs, 109 steals.

@Reality Check — Cannot compare the record of JS with that of Wren given the cheap budget that Wren has to work with.

Even under Time Warner for a time the Braves were still operating with a payroll in the top third in the game.

I know TW got cheap after the 2003 season.

Things are different under the current parent corporation — Wren has been fine with what he has to work with.

Things have changed since 2007. They changed after 03, but its all business now with the corporate sharks.

Constanza should at least be considered for a platoon in left field with Reed Johnson. He won the batting title at AAA last year. In 205 MLB ABs, Constanza has a .281 average with a .332 OBP, – not too bad for a rookie playing part time. Schafer didn’t hit that well in the minors, yet he was handed a starting job. Schafer’s defense is better than Constanza’s, but we’re talking about left field here. We need a lead off hitter more than anything else.

I hear Chipper has a little hottie as well; she’s even made some “movies”.

I just love Dixie, BBQ, great football & beautiful babes.

Next time I’m in Tuscaloosa for a big game look for me over at Dreamland BBQ eating some ribs.

Ok, Nats signed LaRoache so lets see if we can work out a deal and get Mike Morse who you can count on to hit around .300 with 30 home runs with 110RBIs if he plays full time.

@jbailZ23 Of course I am a dude. Never said I wasn’t @ Negative Crep. I am aware that Braves won 94 games. But all that pitching didn’t win. Got to hit and score runs. If that pitching isw so good, why hasn,t he traded to get a hitter ANSWER: No body wants them.
