Jerry I honestly believe the falcons had to go through some growing pains. The regular season turnaround after that whole Vick thing happened so fast that people thought that, that would automatically translate to the postseason. We were young and inexperienced in 08, making the playoffs was a surprise, we were like the Colts of this year. In 2010 when the packers ran over us our defense wasn’t good and by the time we played that game it was not only bad but injured. Last year our offense just played horrible, no excuses. This year Julio is better, we’ve gotten a little more creative offensively and biggest of all our defense has improved and is actually looking like it might be healthy come game time. This is a better team, if we lose this year we underachieved big time. The team has showed up for every big game this year. I’m hoping that trend continues.
At least Dan Reeves could win playoff games.
As much as I want the Falcons to win , I am not optimistic.
I think the red-hot Seahawks will win Sunday. The MIke Smith/Matt Ryan Falcons have to prove to me they can win a playoff game!
Well, if McCann really makes it back in time for the season that would be great. If he would go back to being the hitter he once was, then a lot of pressure would be taken off the rest of the lineup. Maybe the shoulder was the reason why he wasn’t productive at all. Then we still have to worry about Uggla. I don’t think he’ll strike out 174 times… I’ll even give him more credit than that. I could see him bouncing back to .250ish. Then I think BJ Upton will produce better in a different league. Irregardless of whether the Braves make another move before the start of the season, I think they’ll be in good shape with their offense. I’m glad to see Chipper Jones go. I’ll remember him as the legend he was a young baseball player. The last year was good, but the two seasons before it were rather forgettable. I read stuff online that talks about what a loss it will be. But, I feel like the team will play better without him and will have a more consistent lineup. Better chemistry maybe? No harm in seeing if Juan is capable of playing in the majors because of the expense of him doing so is the minimum. Then the Braves won’t have to spend the big bucks to get a new 3B after next season. That’s what the Braves have to be thinking at this point. I don’t really want Bourn back! He looked horrible the last couple of months of the season. I think we’ll have a season of bounce backs and across the board improvements. Plus, getting rid of Hanson is addition by subtraction. I don’t think Fred/Wren could deal with all the steals off him. Might as well just save the money. Otherwise the Braves will never be able to compete in big-money modern day baseball, if they waste opportunities to develop young talent. If McCann comes back and hits with average again that will be a big lift. I think that Heyward/Freeman can, plus Upton will improve. And in my ideal Braves season we’re going to wind up with 96 or more wins. Hah, maybe not. But I think they would improve on last year.
I don’t think Murray will ever be more than late 1st round, at best; probably 2nd round, just because of his size. Not many (any?) bigtime qb’s in this draft, so he might be passing up an opportunity, but I guess that’s not his first priority.
Great that he’s coming back. He’s got a chance to finish as one of the top 10 college qb’s of all time, in both yardage and rating.
Yeah, I know Dungy said that… but you read the AJC piece, right? That he was projected 2nd or 3rd round… Stafford’s a couple inches taller, I think. I just don’t think he fits the Luck/Manning Mold, or the RGIII/Russell Wilson mold. I love the guy, but if he was #1 pick material, he wouldn’t be hearing 2nd/3rd round coming off his (redshirt) Junior year.
All, back for a few…. I heard about Django, and will buy it, and see it. Looks good from reviews, and I think it would be a great movie. As, for Falcon fans it’s possible they can beat the Seattle? Wasn’ too impressed with Seattles’ victory…..Falcons have a way of pulling the Giants, just don’t get your hope up? Hope the Irish, can pull off a victory tomorrow? It would be nice….It’s hard know where Wren, stands on LF? Would like Wren, to keep his talks up with Arizona, and throw in tlaks Rockies, but he could still be thinking of the Platoon in LF? All, be patient, and be cool…… Peace my friends, and “Go!!!!!Braves!!!!!” Will, talk tomorrow…….
Given the recent playoff history of Atlanta teams, I go into next weeks’ game against the Seahawks with extreme trepidation. Not sure how anybody can be confident of a victory in this town.
gotta stay confident Cliff… team doesn’t lose at home, and we’ve only hosted 1 playoff game… were missing guys on defense and it showed (vs. Packers)… don’t lose back to back games either, and we lost our last one. Plus Seattle wasn’t all that good yesterday, got lucky late, all the traveling and such
We’re the better team, and should win. I’m 85% sure that we will
Kevin Towers likes to see his name in the press without actually doing much. He’s wishy-washy, always has been and seemingly always will be. If he has a player you like, just window shop. Can’t deal with him.
The other thing you can bank on is that McCann will not be an Atlanta Brave in 2014.
FYI – Following are the opening and current odds from Vegas. Gives you an idea what the bookmakers think about the teams transactions to date.

murph, yeah the yankees might be in trouble this season. that division as a whole is looking alot better, and i actually like the bluejays chances this year. i think they make the playoffs, perhaps as a wild card. but not much has to go wrong for the yankees to make them miss out.

Good morning all
The bookmakers say we got worse after getting BJ, they are VERY VERY SMART. The BJ signing I believe will turn out to be worse for the BRAVES than the UGGLA trade and signing.
And yet only two NL Teams and seven teams in all of baseball have better odds at making it to the series than the Braves do – even without a LFer and WITH BJ Upton, but to hear the commentary here, we’rew down there with the Cubs, Rockies or Astros.
TOBF Yep… and Dunta is a better tackler than Hall. We’ll be fine.e
not to mention we have a thriving passing game. i mean…think about it. a redskins team lead by a one legged RG3 led the seahawks for 3 quarters. so much of what the redskins do was just foiled by RG3’s injury.
For the record, here are the 10 names I checked: Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mike Piazza, Craig Biggio, Curt Schilling, Sammy Sosa, Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines, Jack Morris, Dale Murphy. Now let’s talk about how I got there.
The last-timer: Dale Murphy
I’ll be honest. If I were ranking the 15 players I wanted to include on this ballot, Dale Murphy wouldn’t have made the top 10. But I’ve been voting for the guy for a decade and a half. Couldn’t stop now, when he’s in his 15th and final lap around the track.
Murphy
I can’t ever remember a player who has had a stranger voting history than Dale Murphy. In his first three elections, when nearly everyone voting on him had seen him play, he averaged 101 votes. In his next six, he averaged 55.
In 2000, he got more votes (116) than Bert Blyleven or Jack Morris. By 2004, he was down to 43 and almost dropped off the ballot. Bizarre.
By last year, Murphy was back up to 83 votes — his most in 11 years, for some reason. And this winter, as Jerry Crasnick wrote last week, his entire family has mounted a heart-warming campaign for him that raises one truly meaningful question:
Why is the character-and-integrity clause being applied only as a negative, to justify votes against the Mark McGwires of the earth? Why can’t it be a reason to vote for a man such as Murphy, one of the great baseball citizens who ever occupied any clubhouse?
Like many Murphy supporters, I would like to have seen a longer period of dominance. But I still see an eight-year stretch (1980-87) when this man ranked first, second or third in the entire sport in runs scored, home runs, extra-base hits, intentional walks and total bases. He got MVP votes in seven of those eight seasons and won twice. In that eight-year span, he and Andre Dawson were the only two players in the 200-Homer, 100-Steal Club and the only NL outfielders who won five straight Gold Gloves.
That’s an awfully long time for any player to hang around the who’s-the-best-player-in-his-league conversation. Long enough, at least, to justify casting one final vote for a player whose stature still exceeds the total accumulation of his numbers
Good movie but I wouldn’t go that far. I think both Inglorius Basterds and Kill Bill are better films. — Rick C
Inglorious Basterds on similar level, only slighty below Django Unchained. Kill Bill Vols. 1 and II? Real good movies, but not even close to level of Django, in my opinion (and I really liked the Kill Bill movies, have them on Blue-ray).
I’m surprised that people are so in love with the Seahawks after that performance. Lynch is so important to them and Chris Clemons injury is huge for them.
Falcons desperately need to run to the left side of the offensive line and right at Bruce Irvin – he is one dimensional as a pass rusher and is not nearly as good at setting the edge in the run game.
Seahawks are incredibly talented and probably have the best roster in the sport right next to San Francisco. I feel bad for the Falcons fans that they have gotten the hottest team in the playoffs three years in a row. Crazy bad luck. Be interesting to see what happens if they lose the game. I think Mike Smith and Matt Ryan need this victory more than any other team.
Falcons desperately need to run to the left side of the offensive line and right at Bruce Irvin – he is one dimensional as a pass rusher and is not nearly as good at setting the edge in the run game.
With Turner or the undersized Rodgers…. I don’t have much faith in our running game.
I feel bad for the Falcons fans that they have gotten the hottest team in the playoffs three years in a row.
Tell me about it. Lost to 3 Super Bowl teams, last 2 won the game. If the Seahawks win….
Luis Avilan told a Venezuelan newspaper that he’ll decline invitation to pitch in WBC, left-hander said he had to use his head to make decision, not his heart.
Smart kid, because he’s pitched a lot in the last year and is going to be counted on by the Braves.
The Falcons defensive line is so small, I am sorry to say that but they really are. Peria Jerry and Jonathan Babineaux are going to need to step up big. They have good young linebackers and a good secondary, but Seattle isn’t a pass-first team. That’s why the Falcons did so well at home vs. the Manning brothers – neither of those teams has a power run game like the Seahawks do.
Mike Nolan is a good defensive coordinator though, and I’d expect him to adapt to the Seattle style of play and blitz more often. You have to get to Russell Wilson and contain him. Tough task. He runs the read option just as good as RG3 and Lynch is the best runner in the sport other than Adrian Peterson.
“Inglorious Basterds on similar level, only slighty below Django Unchained. Kill Bill Vols. 1 and II? Not even close.”
I just thought that those films were much more fleshed out than Django. For example, in Kill Bill it goes deep into the bride’s back story, her training, and all the things she goes through to get revenge. In Django, there’s much less development on the back story and he just happens to be a natural shooter from the start. I’ll need to watch Django another time or two but that was my initial impression.
Is it wrong of me to lose respect for the writers that vote for Bonds and other obvious PED users? I won’t look at Stark articles the same knowing that he’s voting for Bonds. Don’t really care about his justification… I feel so strongly about it that there’s no way he could make me believe he’s in the right on this one.
efrim, seahawks the hottest team? they won the and thats great. i dont want to down play a playoff win. but, they trailed for 3 1/2 quarters.
They really dominated from the start of the 2nd quarter on and should of put more points on the board than they did. RG3 was terrible and hurt, so that played a part of it. If he was healthy yesterday, Washington probably closes it out.
I guess it was just very impressive for me because Seattle was on the road and played extremely well given the field conditions and what I saw from them on the road earlier in the season. Just a completely different team because of Wilson’s improvement and the read option.
All that said, I am picking the Falcons and rooting hard for them because I’m a Niners fan and hate those Seahawks. And honestly, I would feel terrible for Matt Ryan if they lost that game. Just terribly bad for him. A lot of it is going to depend on Mike Nolan’s defensive scheme. I think there were opportunities for Griffin to expose the Seattle secondary(Brandon Browner specifically) and he was not able to do that, where I think Ryan will be able to.
Atlanta runs a nickel defense a lot and if they do that this week, they will get torched by Lynch. Those DT’s are way too undersized to handle him. Just not enough space eaters.
David O’Brien @ajcbraves
Jordan Walden, RH reliever #Braves got in Hanson trade, faced 87 LHH in ‘12 and allowed 13 H, 10 BB w/ 31 K (.169 avg, .606 OPS)
I’ve been using that stat ever since we got him… could make EOF expendable in the right deal w/ Avilan and Walden being here
I know I mentioned this at the time of the trade, but Hanson aspect of the deal overshadowed most else. Anyway, consider this: Jordan Walden, the righty reliever and former Angels closer who came to ATL in the trade, faced 87 left-handed batters in ‘12 and allowed 13 hits and 10 walks with 31 strikeouts, for a .169 avg and .606 OPS. Throws 96 mph and complements it with a change-up and slider.
If it wasn’t already tough enough for lefty hitters against Braves bullpen with O’Flaherty, Venters and Avilan, now they have this guy to face, too.

Kevin Towers likes to see his name in the press without actually doing much. He’s wishy-washy, always has been and seemingly always will be. If he has a player you like, just window shop. Can’t deal with him.
