Why would a contending team make a trade that helps one area but creates a weakness in another area? It is a team that is desperate. The Braves are not in that category. No matter what some of you continually say on here, this team, at present, is a 90+ win team. What deal can be made to get an extra 5-7 wins without cleaning out the farm system thus mortgaging the next 3-5 years? IMO this is what our front office is thinking. If you go all in and have no plan B you can expect to get fired. Look at the Tex deal. It was a 5 for 1. Feliz, Andrus, Harrison, and Salty are all playing AND contributing in MLB now. Even for 3 years of control on Justin Upton, I would not send them our best talent in the minors PLUS at least one current player on the 25 man roster, possibly 2. When you look at it this way, it is easy to see why we stand pat at this point. Now if the price goes down………………..

If we must get another outfielder [ I would rather spend the 10 mill or so on signing PRADO ] i would prefer signing BOURN again to tradeing for UPTON. The only UPTON I would want is KATE.

What deal can be made to get an extra 5-7 wins without cleaning out the farm system thus mortgaging the next 3-5 years?

Looking at the next 3-5 years, knowing where the Braves are going to be as far as having dollars to spend versus what other teams will have to spend…. is mortgaging the future that bad of an idea?

There’s little to no chance that the team will be able to secure the larger free agents during that span. They won’t have the dollars to outbid other teams for the better players.

There’s little to no chance that the team will promote a high-caliber player during that time as well. After Teheran and Delgado, the farm system is almost completely void of legitimate MLB potential.

On a similar note, there’s little to no chance the team will be able to trade for “premium” players during that time for the same reason… the few chips that they have will be needed at the MLB level.

So…. in my opinion…. the team can either go all-in now in an attempt to win the World Series knowing that it’s going to be more and more difficult to field a competitive team in the years to come or they can sit on the few prospects they have in an effort to hang on for as long as they can.

I’d rather see the team go big and try to win than go small and try not to lose. In my view there’s a big difference between the two.

Murph … loved the Karate Kid link. I was never a big fan of the movie, since I thought Danny was a creep. Hard to root for the guy.

On the FA market … I don’t have as dismal an outlook as you do. Yes, the Braves don’t have money to spend, but consider what they would be spending it on.

Hamilton, Bourn, or Grienke would make an impact on this team in the now. However, they will be getting paid a lot in their waning years to play for someone else. In other words, Angels and Dodgers are going to be paying for fourth OFs or fifth starters like their premium players in the last years of those contracts … even while the players are providing value for some other team.

Consider the mighty Yankees, who went ludicrous a few seasons ago. They’ve even admitted that too much is too much.

I agree on the farm system. But, part of that problem is that it’s graduated a bunch of players who will keep the team going for the next few years. There’s time to draft and develop.

According to the draftinistas, the Braves made a pretty good start at shoring up the system in the last draft. This year will also tell the tale as to where they’re going with their strategy.

and we should be able to draft some new pieces for the farm, already got Sims and Wood to get us started pitchingwise. The team is young, I think for the right player, you can afford to “overpay” for a stud player, esp. one under control for 3 years like Justin is.

I’m not all that concerned about a centerfielder entering his age 28 season in 2013 who had a 102 OPS+ over the last four years.

Michael Bourn had a 98 OPS+ over the last four seasons and is entering his age 30 season in 2013.

In answer to your question, I do my own stats, always have. Don’t know any newspaper writers who have access to a statistician to do the kind of stats we use in our daily work.

I like the new proposed BP caps. That said, I’ve read several articles (mostly rants) against them. But, what strikes me as peculiar is that I’ve yet to read a single adverse opinion from anyone claiming to be Native American. In fact, all the rants I’ve read, as well as Twitter comments decrying these caps as racist appear to be written by white men. I’ve always found it curious how some will mount a soapbox to assuage their internalized feelings of guilt.

To each their own. I will definitely buy one of these caps if the detractors don’t get their way and the caps actually make it to market.

Awhile back, you were looking into cheaper alternatives to cable/sat TV. Did you change?

Yep. That was almost a year ago today. I haven’t been so happy as I have in this past year. Just wonderful. I probably would have issues if I lived in a “non-disputed” zone for baseball, or Braves territory. As it is baseball is fighting over the Raleigh area so no baseball is allowed on TV. Cable blacked it out even though it was the Braves FS-South channel.

I severed the Cable. Scariest moment in recent memory. Just cut the chord. Didn’t know what would happen. If I’d be lost out at sea, drowning…

Slapped up an antenna and bought a Roku. I subscribe to MLB.tv and was given the gift of Hulu Plus and Netflix. Couple that with the bazillion streaming Channels available for free on Roku and I pay only for internet access, and what amounts to $10 a month for baseball, all baseball. I’ve got more TV to watch now than I had with cable (even with the super bundled swindling deals of movie packages etc.) And all of it is high definition. The image is better over the air than it ever was with digital HD cable. And with the Hulu/Netflix it is essentially all automatically DVR’d by the next day.

I cannot state enough how freaking awesome it has been. And the money saved… damn that buys a lot of beer.

In addition the music has been improving. As I’ve learned more about the Roku and my setup, I’ve learned out to network all my music to different rooms in my house etc. I have access to my entire library as well as Pandora, Amazon Cloud, and just about everything else.

Do catchers actually age faster? I’m not so sure. It’s possible that they do and I can see the reasons for believing they do but I’m not sure that it’s a fact. Plus even if catchers typically wear out faster, at what point do they see production drop dramatically? I would guess McCann is not at that age yet, even if it does come sooner than players at other positions.

Another thing that I think we continue to overlook about BJ Upton is that he’s played his home games at the Trop for his whole career. I’m wondering if that may have also affected his defensive metrics, in addition to his offensive numbers.

TennesseePaul,

My son and his fiance did the same when moving up to Kentucky for him to attend law school. With the price of cable not in their very tight budget, they opted for a Roku and are using her parents’ Netflix account while sharing their Hulu account with her parents.

I spent the past week with them and was very surprised at the quality of television viewing choices compared to what I’m paying for with Comcast. I swear there are days when I can’t find anything to watch and that wasn’t the case at their place.

If my cable wasn’t bundled with my internet and home phone service and I hadn’t just renegotiated a very fair price for all of it by threatening to leave Comcast, I would consider it myself.

flange1, I picked up a Roku 2 XS. I wanted the ethernet (RJ45) port and the USB port. I really don’t think Frank will be making any more moves unless something clearly lopsided, like the Uggla deal (at the time), falls into his lap. I see Simmons being groomed for the leadoff spot during ST and, if he struggles, Prado will take the role. I honestly think Frank is going to give Gattis a shot in LF and, you know what? If my cable wasn’t bundled with my internet and home phone service and I hadn’t just renegotiated a very fair price for all of it by threatening to leave Comcast, I would consider it myself.

When I relocated out here I got swindled too by the cable company. Hated it. I don’t have a home phone. They offered one… “With our swindle you can have home phone for cheap!” As soon as I was able to get out of the swindle I went straight for the streaming system. Oh the phone calls from the cable company are awesome. They still hit me up from time to time. “We can get you all the TV you could ever want, plus internet and phone for less than you spend now!” “Really,” I say, “I’m paying $10 a month for all of this. You can beat that?” I know these jackwagons. They’ll swindle you into the deal, then bump up the cost at your next “renewal” period.

The freedom and the selection is just wonderful.

Plus, I never got into the ultraviolet movie copy thing until just recently. I found the Vudu app on Roku, thought I’d see what that was about. So many of my movies had the UV code. I entered them and the HD 1080p quality they have streaming over the internet is insanely good.

Easy… cleanup. Much better suited for that spot than his brother… even at his worst lately, he’s been better than BJ. Bossman’s streaky hitting and low OBP are better in the 6 spot than 4.

Prado, Uggla, Heyward, Justin, Freeman, BJ, McCann, Simmons

or, you could hit him 3rd, where he has a .286/.364/.485/.849 career line and go

Either is fine; cleanup would be my preference.

Is it $10MM better than Gattis at the end of the other 7 guys, though? I’m not so sure.

Considering the value of a marginal win to a team like the Braves who expect to be very close to a playoff berth, absolutely. Even if you expected similar offensive numbers it would mean that Gattis had a damn near perfect 1st season, and it’s completely unreasonable to expect anything close defensively or on the basepaths. Gattis’s upside for 2013 is pretty similar to Upton’s floor for 2013. So the question is whether or not $10 million is worth it to eliminate that risk. Unless there is another, more productive way to use that $10 million (which I am unaware of), then it would certainly be worth it.

braves4life-

Here I was all annoyed and getting mad that you posted VJ’s tweeter name on the blog (I read it in the car…) and when i go back and look at it now that I am home I noticed that you removed his handle, thus totally ruining the post I had planned ;)

Simmons, will be an Ideal #2 hitter once he gets used to the league, Bank on It…

Simmons’ upside offensively is probably somewhere around a career average Edgar Renteria season. Renteria hit .286/.343/.398. But that doesn’t matter, with an 80 glove and an 80 arm. If he’s quite a bit below that, say around .250/.300/.360 for the bulk of his career, he’ll still be a very valuable player. I suspect that’s a good range, somewhere between those two lines. I suppose there is a chance he could even be a little worse than .250/.300/.360, but even still he would be plenty valuable with his glove and arm.

“T, I agree about Bourn. Wish the Braves could bring him back for a year, but I wonder which one would play CF if they did. Bourn is clearly a better defensive option than BJ in CF. But, how would BJ feel about moving to LF if that pipe-dream were to happen?”

@Brava, BEEJ is gonna get Killed on here during the Games, Watch and Bank on it, I have no expectations of him other than he better steal 20+ bases

Word on the Street is that he is another streaky hitter…And we already have enough of those. He might get called Loaf part II

OTOH Im expecting Fab 5 Freddie to Come out Hard, he did well despite the various issues he had last year

Now grant it, lots of K’s predetermined here, If wren really kicks it in gear w/ the 2 headed Guru to have a “Walk N Fletch Hitt’n camp for the hitter’s to work on Hitting Disciplines, having an approach, to battle the count, How to be a tough out, w/o being suckered into flail’n that turns into fail’n. Look for you’re pitch, lay off the pitcher’s pitch, & make him give you you’re pitch. Know you’re (hitting) zone. Be a good 2 strike hitter, don’t be afraid to strike out, but try not to make it a habit. Be aggressive early in the count, but get 2 strikes on you, have the mind set to keep the At Bat alive. Stay alive & wear down that pitcher. Make him be puzzled at what to throw you, not you being a puzzled confused hitter. The pitcher wants to establish as the owner of the plate, but you establish that you take ownership of the At-Bat. You’re GM,Coaches want Good Quality At-Bats from every position player to become established hitters,it’s been stressed at least the last 2 yrs. So how ’bout the idea of Walk’n Fletch camp week. This Years world Champs battled thru w/ good quality At-Bats to slay the Behemoth, Goliath-power like lineup of the Tigers, because the Giants became well disciplined, clutch, good 2 strike Hitters when it really counted. (Wonder who the Hitting Coach is for SanFran,) because, bein’ world champs the past 2 out of 3 yrs. ain’t too shabby. DISCIPLINE IS KEY once again. Good Plate Discipline, Who say’s Hitter’s 1 thru 8 couldn’t be good Disciplined hitters, even still can be good powerful Lineup?

It’s not the $10 mil for this year that concerns me. It’s the $14+ mil the next 2 years. We’d blow pretty much any flexibility going forward (having all our money committed, and all our prospects probably traded), and it would make decisions on McCann and Prado all the more difficult.

I’m not against it, though. Let the suits worry about payroll.

Agreed on the Renteria Comparisions of Lil Andy.

Renteria was a Bad Ass #2 Hitter, who would kill the Phillies. Renteria had power to the opposite Field which was Dope!

I expect lil Andy to develop more power as he Matures??? He did win the batting title in The Carolina League a few years ago? If I’m not mistaking?
