At age seven I became a Braves fan when I opened my first pack of baseball cards, that was in the spring of 1957. Because of my age and where I came from I didn’t understand race differences, I just remember how much I liked Hank Aaron in that Milwaukee Brave uniform. The Braves went on to win the World Series that year beating the Yankees in seven games and that solidified me as a Braves fan forever. Anyone who knows me knows that the Braves are an important part of my life, I often joke that If I didn’t do anything else right, I did raise all my children up to be Braves fans. The first time I was ever at a Braves game was in San Diego in 1968 just before I went to Vietnam, however when I retired in 2002 we bought a house in Marietta to so that I could buy season tickets, I’ve since taken a job here in Europe going to bed early every evening so that I can get up at one or two in the morning to watch my Braves on MLB.Com. When I finally do retire again in a couple of years, I’ll be back at Turner Field. Lets just hope that the Braves will always be the Braves.

Interesting article, DOB. Good read overall and a tough topic.
I’ve long thought the Washington Redskins needed to change their name. Never thought Braves fell into the same category, but that could just be me being ignorant.
It never made any sense for the D-Backs to keep Upton over Kubel. They would seriously lack LH power if they traded Kubel. Montero and Chavez would be their only LH bats in the mid-low order and Montero doesn’t play ALL the time and Chavez is a platoon player and not a huge threat at this point in his career. I think Justin Upton is getting traded within the next few weeks.
Well, from my experience in ATL, if you got commissioned to do artwork at The Varsity for food, you might not live to see the work finished. Great stuff, love that piemento cheese grilled and smashed flat. Not good for the waistline or the arteries however.
How much influence does Justin Upton have over where he accepts a trade to? It is common knowledge both the Upton brothers want to play together. Maybe Kevin Towers would pull the trigger with the Braves if the offers were close.

Thats the hard part for me to pin down… they needed a SP, SS, and a LHRP coming in to the offseason. They moved an OF because they had a surplus, then go and sign another one… They have their infield set, already have a C, surplus in the OF, rotation is fine; all they really need is a LHRP, but that won’t be a fair trade for Upton. Already got pitching prospects, so….
But given that they’ve been trying to trade him so long, and they basically have to move him now, makes no sense to move Kubel, and moving Parra won’t give them a good return, I could see other teams not paying market price for him… KT wants him gone.

efrim It never made any sense for the D-Backs to keep Upton over Kubel.
except that upton is the better player. if they want to win, wouldnt they keep the better player?
besides, i dont think they should trade either one of them, if they plan on contending. they need to trade geraldo parra if they want to make room on the roster.
The restaurant was was west of Athens on the Atlanta Hwy. They sold the property about 30 years ago and there is a Walmart there now. I think it was the Timothy Rd that intersected the Atlanta Hwy where it was.
The downtown Varsity across from the Arches is also long gone. There is another one at the intersection of Broad St and Milledge Ave. that is much larger than the old one downtown.
It’s an HONOR to have your name, your face, your culture, your religion, or your country put on a pedestal. For some reason, some people just don’t get it. I would love to have my name put on the Braves logo!
It would Rule if the Braves Cheap #### Ass F.O. Would Invest some money and Bring him Back for 1 year since I dont think he will get his Hustle Deal that Bor@as-shole demands. BEEEEEJ (B.J. Upton) Alone will not put Cheeks in the Seats nor get us past the 1st round….
About thrity years ago? Sounds about right. The Varisty downtown moved when I was there – they put in a Schlotsky’s where the Varisty and Wuxtry (back when Pete Buck still worked there) used to be. There was a Yudi’s sandwhich shop across from the Old Varsity, owned by the brother of the Guy who owned the Sub and Steak where I painted the mural.
It’s cold in Austin… even saw a few snow flakes this morning. Of course it’ll be back up to 70 in a few days, but still… I actually had to wear socks today! Brrrrrrrrr.
I hear what you are saying about Arizona’s “needs”, but in my opinion that can still stand to make some upgrades in their infield (or at least add depth), and while they have pitching prospects, the acronym TNSTAAPP came about for a reason (There’s No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect).
I’m not sure exactly what Arizona would be seeking, but I’d think that two of Atlanta’s top 3 pitching prospects (Teheran, Graham, Delgado) and Pastornicky (as depth) might be a good place to start the conversation. It would certainly take more than that, but I am not sure exactly what other pieces would be targeted. Possibly O’Flaherty or Venters?
Another thing that hasn’t been mentioned is that once Bourn finally signs with a team and the Braves are awarded a draft pick, that pick is actually tradable. While most draft picks are not tradable, the new CBA allows teams to trade compensatory draft picks.
As Much As I wanna Taste Justin Upton Coming Here, Its Not Gonna Happen People. I’m still Lusting for Nellie (Nelson) Cruz…I’m kinda Suprised the Braves haven’t gone after him even though I have been Lusting for him in a Braves Uni for Years!
I can Feel the “CRUUUUZZZZZZ” Chants on here!
And On the Real Tip, I dont think the Braves F.O. will do anything til S. Training, because Braves Fans are gonna Barf if Schafer is in Left Field on Opening day. Injuries can happen in S. Training Ya Know???
While most draft picks are not tradable, the new CBA allows teams to trade compensatory draft picks.
I’d rather see them trade the pick than draft Gilmartin 2.0.
I think any trade for Upton starts with Teheran, Ahmed, and either EOF or Venters… but I don’t see that being close to getting it done. As much as I’d like to get Upton, I don’t think the Braves have the chips to make a deal happen.
Well, sh!t. I was hoping, against all odds I suppose, that the new year would mean TOBF would stop trying to trade Teheran at the drop of a hat. At 9:48 this morning he filled out his Varsity order with Teheran. Seriously man, you need to move past it.
the Braves are awarded a draft pick, that pick is actually tradable
I think there is something missing here. I’m not sure that is exactly right. There are the lottery picks, and I think those are traceable… not sure about the others.

He would be a nice righty power bat, but I don’t think the Braves are willing to give up the prospects or the $10.5 M salary for a guy who will be turning 33 during the season and will be a free agent after the season. If Texas was shopping him it’d be one thing, but considering that they just lose Hamilton I have a feeling they’d like to keep Cruz for this year, unless they were blown away by an offer (which the Braves wouldn’t/shouldn’t do, based on the age and pending free agency).

Dang it, I think you are right. Forgot all about the new lottery system….my bad.
Good points, I forgot that Ol Nellie Cruz is Indeed old, He was in the Rangers Farm for years but I got to see him A lot watching the Rangers Games, Dude can Flat out rake
And you do make a strong case for him and Beltre being their “Hit Sticks!” since Hamiliton Sold out…
I’m curious to see if Sean Gilmartin will compete for the 5th starter slot….? Thats Gonna be a reality show competition
Gilmartin has only pitched 37 2/3 innings at AAA, and had a 4.78 ERA in that time. Added to the logjam of pitchers that are ahead of him, I think that for Gilmartin to have a shot at the MLB rotation to start the year a LOT of things would have to go very wrong.
“the picks that come out of [the competitive balance lottery] are commodities. For the first time in Major League history, Draft picks can be dealt. But there are a series of conditions and limitations regarding such transactions.

Interesting about those links, Jonathan Mayo did a lot of copy/paste in his two articles, several months apart… and no reference to his previous article. He was ripping himself off. Plagiarizing his own work.
DOB, do you have any insight on the status of Bourn and if he might still be considered for a 1-2 year contract? If he could be signed at the right price, an outfield of Bourn, Upton and Heyward would be a base-runner’s nightmare and a pitchers dream. — Ernest
I learned long ago not to count our Boras getting a huge contract for his client, regardless of what the market looks like or the timing (late in the free-agent process).
Can’t see him taking a one-year deal to go anywhere, but particularly not to go back to Atlanta, where they turned down a $13.3M offer that won’t be there now, and especially not to play left field (that’s not the way to re-establish free-agent value, which would be a primary reason to take a one-year deal if he did take one, which I don’t think he will).
Tyler Kepner @TylerKepner
I’m getting a very strong feeling that no candidate will be elected to the HoF this year. Even though I’d vote for about 13 if I could
Word on The Streets is that Gilmartin has a lot of poise for being so young, and he cant do no worse than Jo-Jo Reyes….
I don’t disagree with that. However, Jo-Jo Reyes joined the rotation at a time that injuries (and lack of talent) made him the best available option. Even if Gilmartin today is better than Reyes was then (too close to call based on stats), he’s still the 7th option at best, and that’s not including Beachy, who should return around midseason. Teheran and Delgado are both at the point that they really have nothing left to prove at AAA, and I think the team realizes that they are in a “sink or swim” situation with each of them. Gilmartin has little enough experience at AAA (and poor enough results) that he can likely continue to learn and grow as a pitcher in that environment, at least for another year.
For the record, if the Jo-Jo Reyes of 2007 were magically transported to the 2013 Braves spring training, I think his lack of experience would also place him no higher than the 7th best option (although he had performed better than Gilmartin in AAA at the time of his callup).
So, what is the mathematical rock bottom from a pitching stand point: (1) you walk everybody you pitch to without throwing even one strike; or (2) you give up a solo homerun on every pitch you offer in the major leagues?
In either scenario, said pitcher would do quite worse than Reyes.
Nothing offensive about the logo, even if I were Native American. If that Braves logo is offensive, then the redskin, cartoon logo used all over the place for the Cleveland Indians is downright illegal. No one is kicking up a fuss over that either nor the Washington Redskins logo – which the name alone is offensive.
“I’ll go out on a short limb and predict that Sean Gilmartin will pitch for our Braves this season. In fact, I’ll guarantee it’
Bank on It!
That seems to be a pretty likely situation at some point during the season. I think I will go out on a much shorter limb and say that he will not be a part of the major league starting rotation on Opening Day.
Well, if TOBF gets his way and Teheran, Delgado, Maholm, O’Flaherty and Venters are all traded, we can pretty well assume Gilmartin gets his shot this year. Of course, if only we had Grienke, we could trade Hudson, Medlen and Minor, too.
I don’t know about that. I knew Jo Jo was missing a chromosome or two when he rejected Tom Glavine and John Smoltz’s offers to help him become a MLB caliber pitcher. Prime example of a million dollar arm and a ten cent head.
No one is kicking up a fuss over that either nor the Washington Redskins logo – which the name alone is offensive.
I don’t think this is true at all. There are plenty of people who have made plenty of fuss over the Washington Redskins name….they simply haven’t come onto an Atlanta Braves blog to do it.
Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN
Texas a good fit for Upton — but not perfect, because the lineup is so RHed. Atlanta could be a better fit, from the team’s perspective.
JiminGA: “If the Braves hat said “I hate Indians”, that would be racist and offensive. How anyone can consider a picture of an Indian racist is just plain dumb.”
OK, now get out to that driveway and clean up that pickup truck.

All one need do is too look at our rotational depth, do the math with the realization that our Bravos used ten starters last season, along with the reality that most ML teams use 8-9 starters every year.

Last night I was watching Karate Kid with Mrs Murph and we got to talking about my theory that the protagonist of the movie is actually Johnny and not Daniel Larusso. On a whim I googled it and found the funniest argument in favor of my hypothesis that I’ve ever read. Just so happened to be on a Washington Redskins fan forum.
I never ever said to trade all those players… even in my Greinke “tirades”, I only advocated moving Maholm, the most expensive and expendable pitcher… an older Minor. Shows the trust I have in Mike to be consistent this year. And the only LHRP I ever said that the team should look into trading was EOF, but that they didnt have to do it.
Is it racist? Really? That just feels a bit over-the-top reactionary to me, and usually it seems that charge is coming from people who are on the outside of this looking in, like me and most of you. Rather than from actual Native Americans.
– DOB
I’m a little late to the dance on this topic, but I heartily agree. The “Screaming Brave” is really iconic and a great retro look. I hope the Braves don’t go wobbly and ax the Indian!
Lew – The best thing that ever happened in downtown Athens for me was the Downtown Twilight Criterium. They closed off the entire down town and about 50,000 people would show up to watch the bike races. I can remember the first year, standing in front of the Georgian Theatre watching the professional racers come by. Several of the bikers made the USA Olympic team that went to Los Angeles in 1984.
I was already doing triathlons and those races lit a fire in me for biking that is still going.
I don’t know about that. I knew Jo Jo was missing a chromosome or two when he rejected Tom Glavine and John Smoltz’s offers to help him become a MLB caliber pitcher. Prime example of a million dollar arm and a ten cent head.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Yep. Million dollar talent, ten cent heads:
JoJo Reyes, Jeff Francoeur, Yunel Escobar, Tommy Hanson, etc.
YOBF – You’ve argued for a trade involving every one of them at one time or another this winter. You post so much you can’t keep straight what you do say – which is surprising, because most of them are either to acquire Bourjos, Choo, Greinke, or someone else that has already been picked up by someone else and likely were never seriously considered by the Braves to begin with.
Oh – one more of your favorite toipics – BJ Upton is no good.
And you’ve also advocated trading Gilmartin, Ahmed, Cunningham and most of the rest of the minor league system if you could get one of your pet players.
No one is kicking up a fuss over that either nor the Washington Redskins logo – which the name alone is offensive.
There are groups these days that kick up a fuss over anything and everything for many different reasons – not all good or innocent.
For what it’s worth, I think its a tribute to the American Indian to have images depicting warriors and using monikers that communicate bravery or fierceness employed by sports teams and the military.
Honestly, there are a lot of weenies in the nation today.
Jeff R – Exactly the word that needed to be used – tribute. I have been looking for a way to say what you did but couldn’t come up with the word that said I wouldn’t be using their name as a mascot unless I admired them.
You don’t see any teams named the Nazis, Klansmen, Serial Killers, etc.
DOB-
Good article, and I agree with you. I don’t think an Indian head on a hat is in any way racist. I can be argued that it is ‘offensive’ perhaps, but that is for an American Indian to decide, rather than American media that wish to speak for other groups. The media is so quick to jump on the Outrage Bandwagon instead of thinking for themselves or posing a different and sometimes valid point of view.
Personally, I didn’t like when Joe Simpson scolded the Atlanta Braves crowd during the wildcard game broadcast, telling everyone “you ought to be ashamed of yourselves.” Very easy to sit in a booth and say that, but the fans were caught in the moment and emotionally invested in the game. If he were a fan sitting with everyone else, he may have gotten caught up in the moment too.
Anyway, I like the hat. It is a cool logo and much more interesting design than the ‘A’ or crossed tomahawks – which by the way is just as racist as the Indian face if you use the popular logic. I am surprised this design came forward though, knowing this kind of backlash should be expected.

efrim It never made any sense for the D-Backs to keep Upton over Kubel.
except that upton is the better player. if they want to win, wouldnt they keep the better player?
besides, i dont think they should trade either one of them, if they plan on contending. they need to trade geraldo parra if they want to make room on the roster.

That was quite some time ago.

TheOnlyBravesFan,
I hear what you are saying about Arizona’s “needs”, but in my opinion that can still stand to make some upgrades in their infield (or at least add depth), and while they have pitching prospects, the acronym TNSTAAPP came about for a reason (There’s No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect).

I think any trade for Upton starts with Teheran, Ahmed, and either EOF or Venters… but I don’t see that being close to getting it done. As much as I’d like to get Upton, I don’t think the Braves have the chips to make a deal happen.

DOB-
Good article, and I agree with you.
