Who says we can afford Laroche + Stanton in salary? We don’t have that much in the figures I see posted around here. Plus, how do we afford the raises for both Stanton & Heyward over the next few years?
Thanks for saying this. I was disgusted at Disgusted, because I was commenting on the fact that I believe Chicago and The Doobie Brothers should be considered for the R&R Hall of Fame based on their longevity and they are still making good music today…
——————————–
if the OJAYS are in the 2 groups mention above should be without a doubt…what did they have besides Love Train and I Love Music…not a lot
Laroche was #6 in the MVP vote last year. He’s going to get decent money. We couldn’t afford his salary for any # of years unless we have secret reserves we’re not aware of.
If we were to trade Freeman for anyone, we’d be looking at Mejia at 1b and Francisco at 3b once Prado leaves at the end of the year. Because he’d be leaving so that we could afford the raises Stanton and Heyward will command.
Why give LaRoche three years at money we can’t afford. If you had Stanton in the outfield, you could just plug Mejia in at first and hardly skip a beat. I like Freeman a good bit, but if he’d bring Stanton? Hell yeah.
Disaster for the Falcons if they lose these two. Hopefully with the bye they have time to heal.

Sorry, but not writing a new blog while I’m on vacation to say that nothing has happened in the past week while the GM’s been out of the country on vacation.
For those wanting to trade for Stanton. Are You CRAZY! . we would have him 4+ years and he would be GONE! Can’t compete with Dodgers, Angels, Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers Etc.
We will be lucky to resign Heyward( Hometown discount?)
The Braves need to focus on the Draft, Development and smart trades.
We are closer to KC, Rays, A’s, Marlins, Indians( Whoops, They just got a nice new TV deal that will move them past the Braves).
Well, you get the picture. Ted Turner is gone, the Braves are no longer the Cable darlings with the TV revenue to compete with the BIG BOYS. Sad but true!
Teams don’t want to make their players (and most players don’t want to either) sit out 2 full weeks without game conditions- speed, contact, etc…
————————————–
well I am sure u know more than Howie Long…he even said it was “stupid” but carry on
Big difference between the Marlins trading Josh Johnson, Jose Reyes, and Mark Buerle, all high-priced FA signings in a salary dump, and a guy like Stanton. The only way we’d be able to get Giancarlo would be for Simmons plus Teheran or Delgado. Freeman, though an excellent player who’s young and etc., wouldn’t get it done, because it’s a lot easier to get production from 1B.
ccrider, if we could have Stanton for 4 years via a reasonable trade, I’d do it. 3-4 years with all our young guns? (Freeman, Simmons, Heyward, and now Upton and Stanton?) That would be a fun team to watch.
So you decide to post a sarcastic reply to me why? I think it’s bad to sit your players without playing AT ALL for 2 weeks. Just because Howie Long thinks differently does not make him automatically right.
well I am sure u know more than Howie Long…he even said it was “stupid” but carry on — Lee in S GA
There are 2 schools of thought on that subject.
1) Rest the starters and eliminate any possibility of injury.
2) Play the starters, some, in order to keep the starting team’s timing sharp.
The Packers tried what Howie Long said would be “smart”, last year. Ask any of them if they’d do it, again.
It’s easy in hindsight to call something “stupid”. Just as it’s easy to get on another blogger’s comment because someone on TV disagreed with the opinion… in hindsight!
Maybe you should attempt an opinion all on your own, sometime.
Zing, It would be a fun team to watch, on the field, but not when they start to leave and we have raped our minor league teams of every player worth anything to make the trade.
So, we would put everything into a small window of opportunity and be bad for years to come. Think Chicago Cubs BAD!
In my own case, I found it hard to sit down key players for two reasons. One, you only have a 53-man roster to draw from. When you sit one player down, you are asking another to assume his role, and in the case of some backups, also continue on with their special-teams duties, heightening their odds for injury. I also found it hard to stand in front of a team and say to one player “you are so important to us we don’t want to risk you playing,” then turn to his teammate and say, essentially, “but we need for you to double your snaps because we don’t need you as much.”
Secondly, I’ve always been leery — not so much of the missed game snaps, but of the lack of focus that comes with a player knowing he is not going to play. Don’t get me wrong: To get a No. 1 or No. 2 seed and enjoy a bye week before you begin the playoffs is a great feeling. But there’s a down side to too much rest. You don’t want to be flat for the start of the most important game of the year. At the very least, start your players then pull them during the game.
I guess he’s wrong too…but what does he know?
———————————-
like u said doesn’t make him right either …Long and him both won super bowls…but common sense says….don’t play them…seems like baseball managers have that knowledge once the team has made the post season and besides baseball is not like football when injury comes into play often
With the way Stanton slugs, he could be looking at 20M in arbitration salary in a few years. He’s not going to be cheap and neither will Heyward. Time to lock up Heyward now.
I think he’s proven that he has a bionic knee…today is the one year anniversary of his (major) surgery. Not sure bashing it with a pipe would do much damage
Gattis had an amazing winter league batting .303 with record breaking 16 hrs 2nd in RBIs, .365 OBP, .595 slugging, and .960 OPS. Very good, but just the Venezuelan league, No Big deal. But consider this, In the minors in 2012. he surpassed every one of those stats, BA, Hrs, RBIs, OBP, SLG., and OPS. Still not impressed? In 2011 he had a higher BA, more RBIs and more HRs, and a higher OBP, than his 2012 minor totals. SLG for 2011 was still .601. and OBP.986

Nov 14, 2011: Delmon Young makes plenty of sense for #Braves — last-year arb eligible, RH bat, LF, not OBP guy but hit .298 w/ 21 HRs and 112 RBIs in ‘10
