He was hurt the 2nd time and sat for the superman Trout… Juan couldn’t beat out another rookie. Got holes in his swing bigger than Stone Mountain. Not fast, not a good defender like Peter. But who knows, maybe it wouldn’t hurt to give him a shot. He can play 3B since we’d be losing Prado, and we can give Juan the 3B job for the future. We’ll see how it turns out.
As for his Latin flair, not a fan, but that’s no reason to hate/dislike him. It’s all about performance. And so far, he’s never really been good.
FYI, check my earlier posts–I agree with you that Bourjos is a stud, would have been an A+ acquisition for us. I love Juan, but would gladly have shipped him off as part of a deal for Bourjos. I like ‘em both.
My quotes about Bourjos were in jest, obviously, and so was my comment about liking “latin flair.” Generally, I don’t. Juan seems to have only a small dose of it anyway. I just think Juan has a chance to dial it up a couple of levels. Mainly needs adjustments between the ears. We’ll see.
We’re back on Bourjos? No think you to a guy that’s been unable to post an OBP above .300 but once in the last 3 years. That’s not what we need in the line up.
When will they stay away from the screaming Indian faces. Regardless of what side of the argument you might be on…..is it really worth it? A mentor of mine– when I was a young adult trying to navigate in the management ranks– once said to me: “If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it.” It would be too easy for these 20-something marketing nitwits to do a bit of research and conclude that playing with the Indian faces just isn’t worth it.

Too much politically correct BS these days. I would think it would be an honor to have the logo, after all it’s just a laughing/screaming Indian and they are called the Braves. Personally I love the logo and hope it makes a comeback on more than just the BP hat and will be purchasing it.
When your big bucks, long term contract POWER HITTER acquisition is a guy who hit .168 with ZERO HOME RUNS against the 1/3 best pitchers, do you think that you might be in deep, deep trouble?????
Our Bravos haven’t kicked the tires on Delmon Young nor are they likely too. Simply because we have plenty of power bats and not nearly enough legs. To many Chiefs and not enough Indians makes for a weak war party.
IMO, if you are going to start one of Gattis or Francisco, it would be Fransisco and start Gattis in Gwinett so he can get some instruction on LF defense. Then if Fransisco falters, you can bring up Gattis and move Prado to third. Key Largo
You are correct, sir. And furthermore, I would be reluctant to trade Juan unless a to good to pass up deal were offered. You can plug him in at 3B in the event of an injury to Prado, Gattis, or Uggla. Good insurance to have.
You don’t like anything the Braves do and you don’t really like any of the Braves players, management or front office, why do still waste your time following the Braves of commenting here?
You have never had anything positive to say no matter what happens.
Must admit is has been a strange off season so far for the Braves.
As we have seen the last couple of years, we get comments from management with high expectations for additional personal for the upcoming year, but the results don’t match the expectations.
The Upton signing was interesting, the guy is a talented player and is still young, but he is not the player that most were expecting.
We lost a lead off hitter and a 4 hole hitter and get a guy that really should be hitting 5-7 in our order.
I think the young man has tons of talent will be a net benefit to the team, but he will strike out and he will slump and we just have to learn to deal with it.
The Braves have 3 younger guys that have some power that could help the club next year in Gattis Mejia and Francisco. The Braves need for 1 of these guys to have a great spring and win a starting job. And like others have said, not sure that it makes sense to have Gattis on the team as a bench guy, and not sure how valuable Francisco will be as a bench bat or PH.
Braves pitching is in good shape at starter, the bullpen and in the high minors. In fact we actually have an excess of starting pitching in the high minors. There is potential to trade from this strength if that is necessary later in the season if the Johnson/Gattis/Francisco/Mejia/Prado “platoon” is not working.
I think the Braves should at least consider talking to the Twins about trading say a Spruil and an Hale for one or more higher level hitting prospect. This would actually help both organizations, one is strong in minor league pitching, the other is strong in hitting…….
So far not a WOW type off season like the Jays, but we were a better team coming in and needed small tweaks as opposed to major changes.
And even with all the talk of the Nats and the Phillies getting better, I still like the core of the Braves team and think with a little luck and 1 of the 3 young hitters making a small splash in the Majors the Braves have a nice chance to win the NL East.

How and where did you get the talk of the Phillies getting better? The race for the East will be between the Braves and Nats.
I have read a few things that suggest that if all the stars align, the Phillies could be a team to reckon with this year. Maybe that is true, I don’t see it, but I did not see the Orioles or the A’s last year either.
But all in all I agree with you, Braves and Nats in the NL East.
Nats 1, Braves 2 about 5gms back. Maybe they’ll slump a bit and we get hot to take over the division, but yes, it’s between just the 2 of us.
How anyone thinks the Phils will be a factor is beyond me. Roy is old, won’t be 100%, Lee is getting up there in age. They have crap in Young at 3B, Utley and Howard aren’t good, and their best OF is Revere, of the .330 SLG. Nothing there, they’ll fight the Mets for 3rd place and win 75.
I had a dream last night that DOB nearly killed McFann and me while driving a van on an overpass in New York City while trying to convince us that Harry Connick Jr. was cool. Also, Joe Jonas was in the front seat (seriously…)
Of course, I also had a dream where I was chased, cornered, and bitten repeatedly by a rabid goose and than attacked by a miniature peacock, so there’s that…
Howard last year- .219/.295/.423/.718 Hahaha. In decline since 2009, and they owe him 105mil (if they buy out for 10mil in 2017) the next 5 seasons. Funny funny,
Halladay, not 100%… old. Lee is getting up there in age, Utley is 34, so is Rollins. JRoll wasn’t all that good last year, 98 OPS+.
Phils have a bad player at 3B and 1B, a mediocre SS, an aging 2B, an aging catcher who doped last year, and a mess in the OF. Their pitching isn’t as feared as it used to be. And they’ve got tons of money tied up in these aging players. No farm to speak of.
I laugh. Shoulda traded Hamels, they ain’t going anywhere soon.
Be careful. You are way too over enthusiastic about players you like (you will go to the nth degree to explain to us why you think that Bourjos will be a good player, despite 2 of 3 bad years) and then on the other hand you will take another players record (Juan Fran) and base ALL your points on the fact that he will NEVER get better (at, say pinch hitting) when you really don’t know that for sure.
And indeed Schafer might be cooked. But he also might not be cooked. You really don’t know.
I applaud your enthusiasm for the team and certain players, but I would also encourage you to be a tad bit more open minded. There are SOOOO many factors that come to play in determining how a player does in any given year.
Why, you don’t have a clue what Jordan Schafer might be doing to improve himself. Maybe nothing. But he also could be working with people that could help him to realize some of his potential.
And Bourjos might have had a lousy first year due to being young. And maybe last year’s lack of success was due to an injury, but maybe it was because he is a lousy hitter. Only time will tell.
I have said DOB is an excellent beat writer and should rest in the winter months so he can give it full effort during the season. — George_George
I bust my tail for 9 months from the start of spring training until after the team is through playing, averaging 80-hour work weeks in that span and frequently more than 100 hours during a two-city road trip or at spring training. I have said, or will say now, that you should give it a rest and take your clueless (at best) or simply rude and ungrateful attitude elsewhere.
Dinner with DOB, would that be red or white Koolaid? — Nowhere man
I don’t know, you’d have to pick that since I haven’t drank any since I was about 7 or 8. But you probably sip it with dinner nightly, just judging from the nature of most of your comments.
Not the blog police, not a kool aid drinker, just a guy that gets tired of the same passive aggressive garbage from the same character over and over again.
I do not believe George is a real person, just a character that someone plays when they are looking for laughs. — flange1
Well said. And the amazing thing (to me, at least) is that we have so many here who actually can’t see right through his tired act.
I gotta say that I am addicted to the Alabama Shakes. I normally am not a big female vocalist fan, but the Boys and Girls album is absolutely addicting!
I’ll try DS1… but it usually isn’t fanaticism… Schafer for example has never put together a full season and looked good. He got benched in Houston for Maxwell! Bourjos did put together a full season where he looked good and he got benched for Superman. As for Juan, well, the dude has huge holes in his swing and has looked good in AA winterball before; even last year he was considered the heir to Rolen. He then went on to stink it up in ST and got moved here.
Maybe he’s finally gotten it together, but it’s not promising.
There you go doing exactly what I said that you do. Not being open minded. A lot more goes into how a player is going to do than history.
I agree that a players record in the minors and in early seasons can be a big indicator, but sometimes it is not.
Mike Schmidt hit 196 with a 697 OPS in his first full season. Then proceed to hall of fame numbers from that time forward.
Schafer got hurt in his first week of play back in 2009. Had a similar year to Bourjos’ year in 2011. Last year, on a go nowhere team, he sucked. Did he suck because he has no talent? Or did he suck because he was on a go nowhere team and was pressing? I personally don’t know. So I choose not to write him off on December 28th. I’ll wait and let HIM write himself off, or not during the spring.
Same with Francisco.
Let’s let these young men play the game and let the chips fall where they may.
cab: “Of course, I also had a dream where I was chased, cornered, and bitten repeatedly by a rabid goose and than attacked by a miniature peacock, so there’s that…”.
Ah, there I went again DS… I just don’t like Schafer I guess…, his previous record makes it easy to pile on. But even so, I still don’t see much there. Even Schmidt actually played well in year 2, and looking at his BABIP in year 1, it was abnormally low. He had times where he did play well. Schafer sukks and his BABIP is normal!
Schafer looked good for 1month last year, Schmidt looked good for 3 in his rookie season.
DOB,
I’m sad to hear that Johnny Neff has quit the DBTs as of yesterday. It was pretty obvious that that arrangement was never going to work (him dating Shonna Tucker and playing in her band and the DBTs at the same time, while Shonna is taking pot-shots at Patterson Hood in her new songs). His pedal steel contributions on the DBT albums were second to none. They will press on like always, but it will be a different sound without Neff.
What about a go-nowhere team would make a player press, that is usually associated with situations where there is the pressure of strong competition.
I doubt it had anything to do with it anyway though
Francisco is younger than Bourjos. You’d think they should both be judged by the same standards. Plus none of Francisco’s critics will ever admit he plays 3rd base better than CJ did his last couple of years. I’m not saying he’s going to be a star, just that it appears he could hit 20 – 25 HR’s as a starter. Something Bourjos never will do.
The Niners winning will have no impact on the Packers- only the Packers can secure a bye for the Packers. Or do you have no faith in your team? (If the Niners lose, they become the 5th seed and won’t have a home game…)
So Bourjos injury last year hurt him, but Schafer’s 3 stints on the DL didn’t affect him in any way?
Again, I’m not saying Schafer will ever amount to anything, but you are saying definitely that he will never amount to anything. Huge difference. Hurt his wrist in 2009. Those are hard to come back from (let’s see how Bourjos does in 2013 from his wrist injury).
You can’t have it both ways. The best possible scenario for the guy you like, yet no breaks for the guy you think is toast. Operative word is “think”.
Half Empty
I stand corrected (though semi-automatic was what I meant to say). And yes, a lot of players on go nowhere teams press trying to help their teams too much. It happens. Not to all players, but for some it is harder being on a bad team.
Guys, I’m not trying to say that Schafer or Francisco (or a host of others on our roster) are ever going to make significant contributions to this team. But a few years back, there were few who thought Prado would be as important as he has become.
Let the kids play the game, and we will see where the chips fall. I’m not going to write off any of these guys, Bourjos included. (and I tend to think Bourjos is going to have a good career)
That’s why until proven otherwise, I’ll be a big BJ Upton supporter. And I will continue to assume that Uggla and Mac will have rebound years.
Maybe I should change my moniker to “Half Full”???
So Bourjos injury last year hurt him, but Schafer’s 3 stints on the DL didn’t affect him in any way?
It may have, but what hurt him more was being sat in favor of Trout… Trumbo, Trout, Hunter. Bourjos didn’t get the playing time. Schafer still did, and stunk.
he plays 3rd base better than CJ did his last couple of years.
Better? Debatable… maybe he’s better now that he’s skinny
Perhaps some folks here seem to confuse the blog wanting a player and the Braves wanting a player. Young is not someone whom the Braves would probably be all that interested in given his personality and attitude, and I do not recall the Braves indicating that last year.
The blog though was awash in Delmon luv

And even with all the talk of the Nats and the Phillies getting better, I still like the core of the Braves team and think with a little luck and 1 of the 3 young hitters making a small splash in the Majors the Braves have a nice chance to win the NL East.
How and where did you get the talk of the Phillies getting better? The race for the East will be between the Braves and Nats.

BP,
I have read a few things that suggest that if all the stars align, the Phillies could be a team to reckon with this year.

With that having been said, I too think they are a bit over the hill.
